My February 2023 books read. The best of these: an ARC of #BrokenBayou (a thriller that oozes malice on every page) by #JenniferMoorehead, #AMothToFlame by #JoeClifford (a thriller with a unique ticking clock), #Extinction by #DouglasPreston (a #JurassicPark type thriller), and the #HeroesOfOlympus series (terrific YA reading) by #RickReardon.

United States' Continued Support for the Rohingya Crisis
Tumblr media
  A Commitment to Global Solidarity
In a powerful display of international unity, Under Secretary Zeya delivered a compelling address at a high-level United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) side event, reaffirming the United States' unwavering commitment to the Rohingya crisis. Hosted jointly with the Government of Bangladesh, the event underscored the imperative of continued global support for Rohingya refugees.   Gratitude and Generosity Expressing her gratitude, Under Secretary Zeya extended her thanks to Madam Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Government of Bangladesh for their gracious invitation to co-host this vital gathering. It served as a platform for renewed dedication to finding solutions for the displaced Rohingya.
Insights from the Ground
Having recently visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Under Secretary Zeya shared three profound observations that have shaped her perspective on the crisis.   Bangladesh's Remarkable Generosity First and foremost, she highlighted the extraordinary generosity of the government and people of Bangladesh. Six years have passed since Bangladesh opened its doors to more than 740,000 Rohingya, who fled the brutal campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing in Burma. Despite the immense burden, Bangladesh continues to provide shelter and support, a testament to its unwavering commitment to humanity.   The Vital Role of Humanitarian Aid Secondly, Under Secretary Zeya emphasized the life-saving impact of humanitarian assistance and the dedicated efforts of organizations like UNHCR and IOM in the lives of Rohingya refugees and vulnerable host communities. She also underscored the catastrophic consequences when essential aid and support fail to reach those in need.
U.S. Commitment and Support
With pride, Under Secretary Zeya announced the United States' commitment to provide more than $116 million in new humanitarian assistance. This funding, exceeding $74 million for Rohingya refugees and their host communities in Bangladesh and the surrounding region, brings the U.S. contribution to over $2.2 billion since 2017. This support aims to save lives, offer protection, provide shelter, ensure sanitation, deliver healthcare, and empower Rohingya and Bangladeshis to build safer communities.   A Resolute Rohingya Community Thirdly, Under Secretary Zeya bore witness to the determination of Rohingya women, men, and youth to forge a future in Burma when conditions permit. Despite their desire to return to a country that recognizes them as citizens and safeguards their rights, the ongoing brutality of Burma's military regime poses significant obstacles to their safe repatriation.   Encouraging Education and Livelihood Opportunities While awaiting safer conditions, the Rohingya population seeks opportunities to develop skills for sustainable reintegration into Rakhine State. The United States strongly advocates for the expansion of education and livelihood opportunities for Rohingya in Bangladesh, while also supporting local communities that host them.   A Shared Responsibility for a Peaceful Future Unser Secretary Zeya called upon the international community to maintain pressure on Burma's military regime to end the crisis, create conditions for voluntary and safe repatriation, and hold those responsible for genocide and other atrocities accountable. The goal is a peaceful, inclusive, and democratic Burma where all, including Rohingya, can flourish.
Resettlement as a Path Forward
Recognizing the current risks to Rohingya returning home, resettlement emerges as another crucial component of comprehensive solutions. The United States has welcomed nearly 13,000 Rohingya, including those from Bangladesh, since 2009. Priority is given to the most vulnerable among them, and a call is issued for other nations to join in providing sanctuary to Rohingya refugees.   Unwavering U.S. Support In closing, Under Secretary Zeya reiterated the United States' steadfast support for the Rohingya crisis response and expressed gratitude for the solidarity of its partners. The international community stands together in confronting this humanitarian challenge, demonstrating the power of unity in the face of adversity.   Sources: THX News & US Department of State.
Doch…

I am so thrilled to introduce the new paperback version of the second edition of #HuntingTheDevil being released on 4/7/2024, in response to the worldwide epidemic of genocides and to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide. The lovely cover was designed by #JayeRochon of #CleverUnicorn. She chose roses with thorns because they're the Rwandan national flower, an elegant way to depict the bloodshed and the angst of the genocide as well as the beauty of the romance. The colors overlaid on the book title are those of the Rwandan flag. She pulled together something that feels evocative, powerful, and dark but also hopeful. It also says "Kickass African-American female main character.” The electronic edition will be free on most major platforms from April 7 through July 15, 2024, the hundred days the 1994 genocide lasted.

World Refugee Day
Every minute, eight people somewhere in the world leave everything behind to escape war, persecution or terror.
There are now more than 45 million refugees and internally displaced people throughout the world—the highest level in nearly 20 years.
World Refugee Day calls on the international community to intensify efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts, and to help achieve peace and security so that families can be reunited and refugees can return home.
A wide range of activities, including film screenings, panel discussions, fashion shows, cultural performances, concerts and sports contests take place to raise awareness of the Day.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed this observance in its 2001 resolution A/RES/55/76.
To leave homes and live in camps is not an act of pleasure but pain and survival!

The Palestinian Republic of Israel
I said it elsewhere. I think it's worth throwing out there as a topic of reflection while the moratorium on war is on. It's for anyone to run with and help fix the problem - short of annihilation. We're in the middle of a pandemic. The economy will not be the same. We're going to have to change our ways and increase cooperation to achieve optimal results. There are intergenerational refugees who'd like absolutely anyone to get creative and get them out of this conundrum, so long as it's not America. I favour Jordan, myself, as they count qualified peacemakers. Children are getting raped, as we saw last week. Inverted victimhood is setting in. It's hard to bear and been inhuman to have to endure. Those camps have existed longer than any war. On the other hand, some - though not all - have chosen to put this democratic inconsistency out of mind and have plowed along as though nothing there were. That's incredibly bouché. How any country hopes to function in such a contorted way is plain nuts. So, an alternative would be to... go home. And for the world community who was ready to pledge billions?... to put their money where their mouth is. This is after we clear the nonsense and reunify the land and universalize citizenship. Before anyone grabs or shakes their head at me, let's try something: a civil code. I'm not inventing anything. And legal aid for no doubt all the grievances that will have to play out. But at least, let's stop the bleeding, bandage the wounds, give tools and restore dignity. I'm hopeful there are enough among Israelis who don't want the stigma to follow in future generations, of having shifted injustice unto an unsuspecting group of people who had not welcomed them with weapons drawn. Put all of the weapons down now. There is plenty of other challenges that await everyone in the future. Share the resources, the infrastructure and give to all. No hoarding from what was not yours. You'll possess it now in better conscience.
