I hope that this letter finds you in good health and good spirits.

The Xaela woman you spoke of arrived in La Noscea today. I wish it had been under better circumstances, but I thank the kami that she and her companion found us when they did. I do not wish to think of what might have happened to Tsubame had she not been there to distract the Redbeak.

I still harbour some small doubts, but seeing the soul stone of our fallen brother glow in her hand and the fearlessness in her eyes as she caught the shuriken thrown her way makes me wonder how long I will remain the teacher, and she the student. You were correct in your assessment that she is no ordinary woman.

I shall keep you appraised of our situation here in Aldenard. I pray that this outsider's help shall tip the scales in our favour.

Pseudoconchs

The debate about whether these unusual bipedal animals are truly Aconchs or their own class of animal between Aconchs and Euconchs still rages on. However, I have chosen to place them within Aconchs due to their mouthparts and four limbs. Pseudoconchs have the remnants of an internal shell fused to their spinal cord, likely providing additional protection around their bones. Most are small predators or scavengers.

Mud-Probers

Pictured: the freckled Mud-prober, a common species found around the Noxa Sea.

Small, round, and bipedal, these almost resemble strange little shorebirds, except with tiny arms instead of wings. Using their long proboscis, they poke around in mud along the shores of seas, lakes and rivers, feeding on whatever small animals they can stab. If startled, they can bolt away at incredible speeds. They live in large flocks and are surprisingly competent swimmers, frequently fleeing into the water to avoid predators.

Bounders

Pictured: the bicolor redbeak, a species found across the highlands of the north Maari Island.

Taking the body plan of Mud-Probers to the extreme, Bounders are egg-shaped with almost no neck, no front limbs, long legs, and a needle-like proboscis. Found on Maari, these little orbs of an animal have long garnered adoration, and they are even considered semi-domesticated and kept by hobbyists. In the wild, they use their slender proboscis to root through the leaf litter to find Hexapods, tubies, and occasional Scuttlers. If threatened by a Terror or a snail-snake, they can run at astonishing speeds to escape.

Frosthoppers

Uniquely adapted for life in the tundras of Amki, Frosthoppers have the thickest bristle-coats of any animal. But don’t be fooled by their fluffy appearance, these are vicious predators of scuttlers, Tubivores and mole-worms. They will also scavenge kills of larger animals, and even come right up next to the bigger predator while it’s still eating. Sometimes, the predator is so intimidated by the aggression of this tiny animal that it will back off. Confidence is half the battle. Although their normal mode of travel is hopping similar to a kangaroo, they can also sprint with alternating strides when necessary.

Prong-Mouths

The only animal on Varin with a double-headed proboscis, these small creatures root around in the undergrowth for groundsnakes, scuttlers, and Tubivores, snaring them with their forked proboscis. The reason for the second head is unknown, but possibly increases their chances of catching small, fast animals. Like their cousins the Dune Vultures, they walk on four legs much of the time but rear up onto two to run. Strictly nocturnal, Prong-Mouths are rarely seen but can be found across Axane, Ejoa, and Faon.

Dune Vultures

Native to the deserts of Hyra, Ejoa, and Axane, these lithe predators usually walk on all fours but shift to two limbs for running. Packs spend the days sleeping in the shade and nights hunting small animals. However, their name is derived from observations of packs of dune vultures stalking dying animals for multiple days on end, waiting for the victim to succumb to thirst or exhaustion. They have long been a symbol of death in many desert-dwelling cultures.

Maari Terrors

On the isolated islands of Maari, where there were no other large predators, one Pseudoconch evolved into an apex carnivore. The ancestors of these voracious animals likely rafted to the islands from Faon or Axane over a hundred million years ago, and now dominate this primeval landscape. Feeding on anything they can catch, they are fast on the ground and can climb with incredible speed. Their only potential predators are large Acualata species.
