Red-winged Blackbird for @meganwhalenturner. Thanks so much for donating to Waymakers and the Young Center to support the rights of immigrant children at the US border!
We're almost done with the monthly challenge! Donate by September 30 to help fund supplies and support for stranded immigrant kids. Donate here and I'll be notified (I get none of the money myself, as a reminder), and please make sure to tell me what bird you want to see!

In both 2022 and 2024, you can see the exact moment Roman throws logic out the window and decides to hit Seth with the chair again

I always like it
when birds look distinguishable, have odd markings or behavior that I recognize. This Red-winged Blackbird seems to be growing new wings on his shoulders, and I think it looks really cool and dramatic how the sheaths are slowly turning into real feathers. He did like to present himself properly, too.

Feathursday Icterids
On this first Feathursday of the New Year, we present four members of the Icterid family of New World blackbirds that are common here in the Upper Midwest. From top to bottom, they are:
Yellow-headed Blackbird  (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus)
Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus)
Bobolink, male and female (Dolichonyx oryzivorus)
Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta)
This image is from a painting by the German naturalist artist and ornithologist Anton Göring ( 1836-1905), reproduced as a chromolithograph in our 2-volume set of Our Native Birds of Song and Beauty, by the late-19th-century director of the Milwaukee Public Museum Henry Nehrling (1853-1929), and published in Milwaukee by George Brumder (1839-1910) from 1893-1896.

Hey all! I don't typically post my photos here but heck, I should. This is just a heads up that you won't see much from me for the next couple weeks as I go on my yearly fieldwork trip to Yosemite to train our summer bird banding crew in how to run their stations. These MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) stations are part of a long-term (30+ years!) monitoring project that has resulted in some amazing science, from teaching us about how climate change affects birds at different altitudes to setting new longevity records (we have a 20-year old woodpecker!).
All of this is done through The Institute for Bird Populations. Go check out the website and learn more about what we do for birds around the world!
