Very little of my original writing gets to see the light of day - so I thought it might be fun to share something a little different I slapped out on my own time: the backstory for a character I’d created for a DnD one-shot. It’s pretty different from Fluorescence but hopefully it’s a fun read for those who decide to check it out!

Stress over my unreliable attention span was the kick in the pants I needed to finally absorb another chapter of Crime and Punishment - and Chapter 6 is a DOOZY!

In this chapter, we finally get a straightforward explanation as to why Raskolnikov wants to kill the widow (Alyona Ivanovna). We relive a conversation Raskolnikov overheard at a bar after his first time pawning a precious item - a ring his sister Dunya gave him - to Ivanovna. (He was drinking tea because as we know he’s a fukkin LIGHTWEIGHT and also why does he always go out for a drink after visiting this woman? Seeing old people makes bro parched ig idk)

During this conversation, a student describes the old woman to his companion, explaining how she is harsh and stingy to those who pawn their belongings to her, abusive towards her sister, and selfish with her money. He then goes on to say that her wealth would much better serve those in need and that, theoretically, the small evil of killing what he describes as a wicked waste of breath and space must surely be drowned out by the tremendous good that could be done with her funds. Raskolnikov was stunned and took it as a sign because he had come away from his first visit to Ivanovna with the very same impression.

This particular bit was very interesting to me because it was very reminiscent of the sort of rhetoric I see a lot among our generation surrounding billionaires and generally-immoral people with a lot of wealth. It’s a very utilitarian philosophy - that the potential evil of taking a life is negligible when compared to the good that can consequently be done with their resources. It’s so interesting to see it in a book written by someone with doubtless a very different experience and perspective on life than the average online millennial or Gen-Zer. I’m very curious to see what Dostoyevsky’s ultimate verdict is on this point, which I’m sure he’ll reveal through the narrative eventually.

Anyway, once again we see Raskolnikov’s conveniently conditional superstition and hear him describe how the idea of killing the widow took over him until it felt like he wasn’t consciously making choices about it any longer.

And then he wakes up from his nap…and it’s time.

The rest of the chapter is VERY tense, especially with the context of what came before. Raskolnikov encounters several hiccups in his plan, but by the end, he is standing in front of the old woman’s door with a distraction and an axe. The description of how he is shocked by his own guile when he knocks at the door and pretends to be there on innocent business is chilling. It’s even more disturbing to see him carrying through with this act after his back-and-forth over the last few chapters. I’m partially glad it’s taken me so long to read this because it’s really allowed the suspense to build, even though I’ve still got so much book left to go.

Anyway, I expect the next chapter will come with bloodshed. We shall see…

Day 7 of ZX Week, the final day that also marks the 18th anniversary of ZX Advent so the prompt is any Advent character. While I like ZX as a game more, Ashe is hands down my favorite megaman protagonist, and she is a joy to play as. She's such a fun character in so many ways.
