Uroboros (WIP) on itch.io Review
@uroboros-if
Characters: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Choice: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Writing: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Replayability: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall: 3.8/5
Pros: Angst 😁, well-written, smooth interface, lovely supporting characters
Cons: short demo, not the fastest updating WIP, so far not much romance
**SLIGHT SPOILERS**
Notes:
So, for me this was a great one to revisit for a first review on this blog because it was actually one of the first WIPs I played on Itch.io and boy did it set the standard. It’s also one I’ve revisited a few times and is deefinitely on my list of most anticipated WIPs.
As I understand it, you are born into a kind of mount olympus-esque realm and play as the deity of eternity which, in a rather cruel twist of fate, makes you essentially powerless as of course, nothing lasts forever. This is a rather nice spin on the typical gods/mythology IF MC and also gives us the opportunity to play a super angsty MC (which I love). Also a big fan of the in depth character customisation you can do.
There are also a handful of (gender selectable) ROs which so far have great potential and can have some really interesting interactions with MC BUT unfortunately the demo is still pretty short so romance with the RO’s is still quite limited. I have to say though, that the lack of romance (so far) hasn’t really bothered me as I am in love with MC’s parents and they way they act towards them is just so wholesome and such a refreshing departure from the usual tragic home life trope and also provides a really nice respite from the (at times cruel) way MC’s world treats them because of their situation.
Another thing I’d like to add, is that in general, it’s just a really beautiful game, which I know seems odd to write about a text based game but I think that the attention to detail in the UI along with the high quality writing really makes for an immersive experience and that in and of itself makes the game worth checking out.

The VAs behind Avatar's voice
I was playing World Tour and for some reason I never really put too much thought into my Avatar's voice, and who the ENG VA was.
And it got me thinking about the other Avatar's voices that made an appearance, and who they were. Surprisingly, I have heard the Eng VAs in different medias before.
Hopefully, this can help people hear what their OCs sound like, instead of hearing bits and pieces from the game.
1. Voice 1 Age (Juvinelle) Tone (High) - Zach Aguilar
They voice Tanjiro Kamado (Demon Slayer), Arthur Pendragon (Seven Deadly Sins), David (CyberPunk: Edgerunners), Genos (One Punch Man), Colt (Hunter x Hunter), Koichi (JJBA Diamond is Unbreakable), Expresso Cookie (Last Cookie Standing) etc.
2. Voice 2 Age (Young) Tone (High) - Xanthe Huynh
They voice Alluka Zoldyck (Hunter x Hunter), Marianne von Edmund (Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes), Nadja Liones (The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon's Judgement), Ui Hirasawa (K-ON!!), Sachi (Sword Art Online), Meiko "Menma" Honma (Anohana) etc.

They voice Kyoya Otori (Ouran High School Host Club), Scar (Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood), France (Hetalia), Sebastian Michaelis (Black Butler), Nagi Kengamine/Owl (Deadman Wonderland), Tomoe (Kamisama Kiss), Erwin Smith (Attack on Titan) etc.
I definitely recommend checking him out, he voices a lot of characters I didn't even know were the same person.
6. Voice 6 Age (Young) Tone (Normal) - Amber Lee Connors
They voice B. Jenet (Fatal Fury), Rye Cookie (Last Cookie Standing), Sachiko Juraku (Kakeguri Twin), Kurumi Saijo (Wonder Edd Priority), Pieck Finger/Cart Titan (Attack on Titan), Mei Mei and Nagi Yoshino (Jujutsu Kaisen), Furina (Genshin Impact), Miki Kawai (A Silent Voice) etc.

long and ramble-y post about persona 5 tactica and politics below the cut. spoilers and all that jazz, thou hast been warned.
persona 5 tactica has Interesting politics to me. because, well, it talks an awful lot about revolution and that jazz. and in the Kingdoms, you do a fair bit of revolution-esque stuff, complete with mass movements which are necessary for the overthrow of tyrannical rulers.
(the rebels are tbh one of my favorite parts of the game, especially with how they could very easily have been relegated completely to background noise, but instead at multiple points they are key for the success of the Phantom Thieves. it's great!)
in the cognitive realm, the game seems to come down pretty solidly on the side of "revolution is worth the accompanying violence" -- see the scene of Yoshiki presenting the Thieves with footage of the rebels suffering against the Aizen Squad, and, of course, the final boss being a god of peace who has decided to crush the revolutionary impulses within the hearts of humanity to ensure peace and tranquility.
Salmael is actually pretty interesting as a criticism of that general mindset of "peace over positive change." he's kinda (or at least can be read as) a symbol for the same thing Disco Elysium represents with the ideology of moralism. the thing that's most striking to me about him is his second form, wherein his appearance changes to be partially composed of bullets and other symbols of violence. with this, not only does p5t argue that the maintenance of peace over positive change is bad, but that it is, under the cover of gentility and nonviolence, itself fundamentally built upon violence and force.
it's not that hard to construct a leftist reading of this, even without the influences of Soviet constructivist art on the menus and UI, and the presence of Che Goddamn Guevara as a heroic Persona in the form of Ernesto. it's a game where the heroes organize mass movements to overthrow tyrannical rulers based on, respectively, a wealthy corporate heiress and a corrupt politician. (i'm not really counting nakabachi because he's not a real ruler and also Kingdom 3 is just less political than the others, it's very heavily focused on Toshiro as a person without really even a political surface level.) then, the heroes fight against the God of Liberalism, revealing the hidden violence underneath its guise of peace and moderation, and ultimately defeating it.
but you kind of run into an issue of like, what are the Thieves' revolutions for? ultimately, they're basically just all against what the tyrants do. in kingdom 1, they're against a wealthy aristocrat forcing people to set up a wedding for her and her forced-groom. in kingdom 2, they're against a ruler running an all encompassing surveillance system and forced labor camps. in kingdom 3 they're against school staff blackmailing students for personal gain.
and i think it's notable that both Marie and Yoshiki are mainly presented in settings that distance them and their wrongs from modern day capitalism. Marie's Kingdom is based on vaguely-revolutionary France, and she herself is fairly clearly based on the pop culture image of Marie Antoinette, from her name to her behavior and aesthetic in the Kingdom and even how in the real world, she makes reference to "the poors" and "commoners." if there's any class being criticized through the character of Marie Anto, it's not the bourgeoisie -- it's the old feudal aristocracy.
Yoshiki is also distanced from modern electoral politics by being predominantly shown in a world based on Bakumatsu-era Japan. it's also notable that, in the Kingdom, he is described as being a general, not in any way elected. so while in the real world, his power comes from the edifice of liberal democracy as it stands in Japan, the system that you actually lead a revolution against is a feudal-military dictatorship.
this is all without mentioning that, underneath the political veneer, the Kingdoms are all in-universe metaphors for what's going on in Toshiro's head. in the end, everything's very personal! and ultimately, after Toshiro has gone through all his character development and unleashed Che Goddamn Guevara as the manifestation of his true self, what does he do in the real world?
he gets two specific bad actors arrested, apologizes for his personal role in their corruption, and then restarts his career as an electoral politician.
as soon as p5t retreats from the cognitive world, so too does it retreat from the idea of revolution against prevailing power structures. i cannot recall a moment where anyone, really, even considers the thought of revolution against the systems that produced Marie and Yoshiki and Nakabachi; they have defeated Salmael and gotten the bad actors arrested, so it's all good.
so, i guess in summary, p5t presents pro-revolution (even pro-revolutionary violence!) and borrows aesthetically from communism, and though you can certainly read certain parts (i.e. Salmael) as fairly pointed criticisms of liberal capitalism, but. considering the game as a whole, it's structured in a way that distances its arguments in favor of revolution from those modern power structures both by limiting them to the metaphorical realm of cognition and by structuring the most political cognitive realms as historical oppressive structures.

Cornbread's Texture Fixer Beta 5 is now out on Planet Minecraft!!
A change in this version made the old cover image incorrect, so I'm just gonna use this one for now.
Link
Change Log:
Bug Fixes
To comply with the changes Mojang made to the Health, Hunger, Armor, and Air Bars in game version 1.21.40; the Experience, Horse Jump, and Camel Dash Bars now stretch to match the length of the Hotbar while using touch controls again. (Removed, added UI JSON)
At some point between this pack version and the last, Mojang broke the way errors work somehow. And also removed a UI element i was changing. Basically, the icon on the General tab of the Settings Screen should be the correct size again. (Removed (seemingly unrelated) UI JSON)
Blazes should now appear the same brightness as in vanilla. (Edited texture)
General Changes
Updated the Blaze texture to match Java Edition since Mojang still hasn't.
Reverted the appearance of the item slot highlight to that of vanilla. Java-Edition-Styled slot highlights have been moved to Conglomeration, a different resource pack. (Removed UI JSON)
The Bundle Storage Bar is now aligned with the pixel grid. (Added UI JSON)
The white outline around the item slot highlight now disappears when scrolling through a Bundle, which is probably the intended design considering the architecture in the vanilla resources. (Added UI JSON)
The item slot highlight no longer becomes slightly greener when scrolling through a Bundle. (Added UI JSON)
The enchantment glint no longer appears pixelated on a Trident hung in an Item Frame or dropped on the ground. (Added texture)
All things associated with the items on the Hotbar (including the items themselves) are now layered above the selected slot instead of just the stack count. (Edited UI JSON)
Removed the outline on the texture for the background of the read more button on the description of a Marketplace item. I have no idea if this texture is used anywhere else. (Edited texture)
Tweaked the colors on the hovered and pressed dark button textures. They should look more like vanilla and less obnoxious now. (Edited textures)
Almost completely rewrote the Mob Effects Screen. It should now look more consistent with the rest of the JSON UI (and also allow scrolling when using a controller). May revert in future. (Added UI JSON) ৹ Uses custom texture at "textures/cb_custom_ui/dialog/effects_scroll_panel_bg".
Fixed the spacing between the Marketplace Button and the Quit Button on the Pause Screen while not online. (Added UI JSON)
Fixed an issue with the nineslice information for certain disabled buttons.
Fixed the scaling and positioning of the "Sign in to See Realms" Button (and its contents) on the Select World Screen. (Added UI JSON)
Drowned are no longer fat. (Added model JSON)
Fixed a hole on the Drowned's torso that is not present on Java Edition. (Added texture)
Fixed the spacing on the top and bottom of the left side of the Settings Screen. The tabs should be aligned with the scroller now.
The bottom Enchanting Button on the Enchanting Screen is no longer slightly offset. (Added UI JSON) ৹ Unfortunately, this will break Conglomeration until Alpha 3 of that pack comes out.
The tops and bottoms of Hay Bales now use the same color palette as the sides. (Added texture)
The arrows on the buttons on the Trade Screen now turn white when hovered over, similar to other gray things on other buttons. May revert in future. (Added UI JSON) ৹ Uses custom textures at "textures/cb_custom_ui/container/trade/".
The slots on the Crafter Screen now use the correct textures at the correct size and opacity. (Added UI JSON) ৹ This will also break Conglomeration until Alpha 3 comes out.
Slightly recolored the hover texture for disabled crafter slots to be more consistent with the established color palette and to better differentiate them from enabled slots. (Added texture)
Changed the hover texture for Beacon Buttons to also be more consistent with the established color palette. This can be disabled using the "Disable Extra Green" subpack. (Added texture)
Adjusted positioning of the Keyboard Helpers on the Select World Screen. They should now appear better aligned with the tabs like the Gamepad Helpers do. (Added UI JSON)
Adjusted positioning of the Bumper Gamepad Helpers around the Recipe Book. (Added UI JSON)
Swamps, Swamp Hills, and Warm Oceans now have the correct water transparency again (Mojang broke them in game version 1.21.40). (Added biomes_client.json)
The background of mob effects on the HUD should appear slightly less broken now. Unfortunately, the misalignment of the textures is hardcoded. (Added texture, UI JSON)
Mostly fixed the Player Permissions Screen. (Added UI JSON, nineslice JSON)
Reworked dropdowns again. Now, only dropdowns I can test are changed. The rest have been reverted. (Added, removed UI JSON)
Relatedly, a bunch of scrolling dropdowns that did not scroll are no longer considered 'scrolling'. This removes some very unnecessary jank, both visually and in terms of controls.
Gilded Blackstone now has a proper top and bottom texture like regular Blackstone does. (Added blocks JSON, terrain JSON) ৹ Uses custom texture at "textures/cb_custom_blocks/gilded_blackstone_top".
The flash that appears when taking a screenshot should no longer move in from the right side of the screen. (Added UI JSON)
The dark background of the Pack Info / Technical Details Screen should also no longer do that. (Added UI JSON)
The main panel for the Pack Settings Screen now SHOULD do that. (Added UI JSON)
Technical Changes
Instead of replacing 'progress_bar_nub' on the HUD screen, pack now replaces 'exp_progress_bar_and_hotbar/resizing_xp_bar_with_hotbar/empty_progress_bar/full_progress_bar/progress_bar_nub', which is specifically the nub when on the Experience Bar on the HUD.
Lowered the resolution of enchantable item textures from 256x to 128x for performance reasons. This shouldn't be noticeable during normal gameplay. (Edited textures)
The textures for explosion particles have been separated from the main sheet for performance reasons. (Added particles JSON) ৹ Uses custom texture at "textures/cb_custom_particles/explosion".
The fix to the player list on the Pause Screen should be less invasive now. It now uses the 'modifications' array instead of replacing the 'controls' array directly.
The UI element that controls the background for the scrolling panel on the Trade Screen has been changed from 'common.cb_container_scroll_bg_dark' to 'trade2.cb_scroll_bg'. ৹ The texture has been moved from "textures/cb_custom_ui/container/scroll_panel_bg_dark" to "textures/cb_custom_ui/container/trade/scroll_bg" and resized.
Removed "ui/ui_template_tabs.json". The JSON that controls the rightmost tab on the Select World Screen is now stored in its file (ui/play_screen.json).
Began work on a fix for mouse controls on the Crafter Screen. It is currently commented out on account of it not working.
Removed the fix for the Gamepad Helpers on the Trade Screen since vanilla fixed its issue in game version 1.21.40
Removed the fix for the coloration on the Screenshot Button icon on the Pause Screen since vanilla fixed its issue sometime between this and the previous pack version.
Removed global UI variable "$cb_ignore_disabled_slot_highlight" since it is no longer used.
The global UI variable that denotes the pack version is no longer a single Boolean named '$cb_is_texture_fixer_[version name]'. Instead, it is now three integers named 'cb_texture_fixer_release', 'cb_texture_fixer_major', and 'cb_texture_fixer_minor', which should theoretically mean that molang expressions can read them in more ways.

Peculiar things Arknights used to have in the past
No 6-stars. Everyone was a star downgraded compared to now; 5-star was the max (they still had 3 skills).
No distinction between Vanguards and Guards. A remnant of this is in Dobermann's S2, which has a green icon (nowadays reserved for skills that generate DP and certain healing skills). And at a tangent, I don't think that Watcher of Realms has the distinction either. Given how large the Guard class is, even at launch, I'm glad they made the distinction.
A completely different UI. The main things it featured was a lock (I'll come back on this later), a seeming limit as to how many stuff you could stock in your inventory, and a Penguin Logistics logo on the shop button. Interestingly, the player name on the old UI images reads 'Theresa'.
That said, we used to have operator duplicates! And no, there wasn't a limit to how many of the same operator you could bring in battle either. You could have two of the exact same operator on the field.
Silence had 3 drones. That's why the amount of drones is specified in the skill text, it's a remnant of this.
Skyfire's S2 was a togglable infinite skill. It was similar to Mountain's and SilverAsh' in function. Once you triggered it, it was always on (i.e all of her attacks turned into meteors) until it charged back up and you could deactivate it again.
No body bags. Those are actually an addition made after the beta. It was the file that you zipped out of the package.
Much bulkier enemies. Even though certain ops were more powerful (i.e Skyfire as mentioned above), the enemies were also more bulky and had more stats than they do now. This caused the game to be badly reviewed in the beta.
A different sprite style. Several operators remained unchanged but a lot of them looked differently. It seems like it took a bit before they settled on a definitive style for sprites. (Which is logical because all splash art is made by different artists, so you'd want consistency in the sprites at least).
Not shown but heavily inferred: potential upgrade failure. Yes, it's highly hinted that you could fail potential upgrades. I've seen times when the 'success rate' was still displayed, it took them a while to patch it out (with Lingering Echoes)...which was obviously always stuck at 100% because we don't have such things as potential upgrade failures.
Abyssal Hunter Blue Poison. She used to be part of the group in the character sheet; this was patched out before game launch.
#arknights#these are just a few#so please don't say that i forgot things or add stuff#because i know those#i just didn't bother to add them

11/25 (Sat) TS blog #4
Good morning. ☁️
This is Very Tired Salaryman Tim. 🛌
Suffering the consequences of my poor choices. Delicious choices, but poor nonetheless.
Today's rank: 5
A so and so day. I had already mentioned how having (2) peppermint mocha lattes was the highlight of my day last time. The consequence of this was poor sleep. Unexpectedly, my downstairs neighbors decided to play bass guitar until 10PM. I had felt my brain pulsing to the beat and feeling the vibrations through the floor.
Typically, I should be asleep by 5 or 6PM and wake up at 1AM for work. This did not happen and I decided to just skip work for the night with no consequence. If I had gone to work with poor health, things would have been worse all around. I hate the holidays and I hate the weather. I could have one or the other, not both.
Yesterday's gaming endeavor was me trying to work with a buggy UI when trying to play Mabinogi. I saw it on Steam with mostly positive reviews and thought to give it a go. It was not a go. I couldn't click anything after my inventory got flooded by the director's gifts.
Purchased FFXIV Complete Edition for the Endwalker DLC. Going to live my best life now. So I thought. The game started me in A Realm Reborn. 😭
Today's lucky color is purple. I customized my character with this palette. It wasn't an easy conclusion to come to. I'm glad I consulted my friend D while I was playing with the features. Otherwise, I might have had a few regrets.
Data Center: Aether
Home World: Adamantoise
Name: Hani Vee (Sprout)
Race / Clan: Viera / Veena (M)
Nameday / Guardian: 28S 3rd AM / Oschon
Class: Archer (Lv. 9) as of this post
The server keeps ejecting me because of poor wifi, with my bedroom being the farthest from the router. There's nothing I can do about that.
My wish for this game is I want to experience the organic friendship formed from an in-game encounter. The nostalgia of making friends online and not stressing about looking for people IRL to play with. I don't think I'm doing very well.
I regret being an archer a little bit. In theory, I thought it was a good idea to gain some distance from whatever I was attacking. In practice, I don't know if I'm just clumsy but trying to back off while shooting a monster that is coming at me fast is not my idea of a great time.
I'm figuring out this game as I go. I try to think of the dedicated players of this game and how some have been playing for a decade. How?
Please, I just wanted to be a farmer...

Even though you have begun to despise your vampire heritage you are still a bit more of a classic vampire and are only able to leave your home at night to go out into the world and HATE garlic. You are bitter and hard to get along with from your life's hardships. You despise your parents and Count Vladislaus Straud, the leader of the vampire who threw you out for falling in love with a human.
Believing your heart is broken forever you take a random human as your new “Lover” though you don't care for them as much as you did for your past lover. They are simply a means to an end. Once you get pregnant with a vampire child you kill the father, after all they mean nothing to you.
Level 10 Pipe Organ
Be A Master Vampire
Have at least 2 children with different fathers.
Gen 2 - The Heavy Drinker
Aspirations: Vampire Family
Traits: Evil, Gluten, High Maintenance
You are rotten to your core, and take pleasure in your thirst. You just can't get enough human blood. You refuse to drink from plasma fruits or packs and only dine on human blood. Eventually you convince your mother to allow you to keep humans in a dungeon below the graveyard so long as you don't make trouble. In the end you fall in love with another vampire who shares your thirst for blood.
Drink from at least 10 different sims
Never drink from plasma fruit or packs
Keep at least 1 human sim locked up for food
Marry another vampire
Gen 3 - The Historian
Aspirations: Master Vampire
Traits: Bookworm, Overachiever, Genius
Growing up your parents always told you how lucky you were to be a vampire, but they could never quite tell you why it was so great besides being able to drink human blood. This sparked a fascination in you to discover everything about your vampiric history and dedicated your life to learning everything there is to know about Vampire culture.
Level 10 Logic
Become a Master Vampire
Produce a Male Heir.
Gen 4 - The Coven Leader
Aspirations: Public Enemy
Traits: Evil, Kleptomaniac, Materialistic
Your mother was obsessed with vampire culture and raised you on all the knowledge of your ancestors. But you wanted to do something greater with this power. Too long has your family suffered under the reign of the Straud's. You aren't too fond of the other occults either and are constantly starting fights with them. But you learn you need more assistance so you strive to create a large and powerful coven of like-minded vampires.
Fight and Kill Vlad
Fight a pack of werewolves
Fight a spellcaster
Have a single female child
Marry a vampire that you once fought
Gen 5 - The Romantic
Aspirations: Bestselling Author
Traits: Romantic, Bookworm, Creative
Growing up under a Coven boss wasn't always easy. Your parents have made many enemies and because of that they feared one of their enemies would come after you. So they kept you locked away and rarely let you outside the confines of your home(if ever). So instead you spend your days reading romance stories and watching Rom Coms. You even begin writing your own stories of love and adventure. Will anyone ever save you from this life of crime and entrapment?
Level 10 Writing Skill
Level 10 Piano or Organ Skill
Publish at least 5 Romance Novels
Sneak out one night and fall in love with a spellcaster.
Become pregnant so your parents have to accept it.
Gen 6 - The Gifted Half Breed
Aspirations: Spellcraft & Sorcery
Traits: Perfectionist, Cat Lover, Loner
Being Half Vampire and Half Spellcaster you are more talented and skilled than any of your kin that came before you. Your parents were both so obsessed with themselves that you were often left to your own devices. There you decide to explore more of your Spellcaster side and how they could enhance your vampire powers. Because of your intense studies you are often alone, but you don't mind that. Worried you may be spending too much time alone, your parents give you an adorable black kitten to keep you company.
Level 10 Jewelry Making
Be a skilled vampire and spellcaster
Have no other friends besides your family and cat
You never really fall in love but instead procreate simply to keep the family line going.
Gen 7 - The Rebel Vampire x Werewolf love
Aspirations: SoulmateTraits: Self-Assured, Dog Lover, Goofball
You were always different. You didn't care about the feuds instilled upon you by your great grandparent. What did they know anyways? They’d fight their left toe if they thought it looked at them funny. Your love for canines confused your family but your mother (wanting to appease her child so she could be left alone) let you get one even though she didn't understand why you wanted a dog over a cat. But your fascination didn't stop there. What could be so bad about the werewolves? They were kinda cute. Maybe really cute if you could just get close enough to one…
Befriend a werewolf
Marry a werewolf
Have a female heir.
Gen 8 - The Mother
Aspirations: Super Parent
Traits: Erratic, Family Oriented, Art Lover
Your genetic mix up isn't exactly pristine at this point having Vampire, Spellcaster, and Werewolf bloodlines, and it would seem that that has raised havoc on your ability to conceive a child. You become obsessed with the idea of starting a family of your own and decide that you will have a child no matter the cost.
Level 10 Parenting
Level 10 Painting
Adopt or steal a baby and turn them into a vampire with cheats.
Gen 9 - The Gardener
Aspirations: Freelance Botanist
Traits: Loves the Outdoors, Adventurous, Squeamish
Growing up you always knew there was something wrong with you. Something that didn't feel quite right. After much prodding, you mother finally caves and tells you the truth of your existence. That you were originally human but your mother turned you into a vampire when you were just a baby. Because of this you start longing to experience nature and the world you were meant to be a part of. Stepping into the light of day becomes a dream you can't let go of. For now though you become obsessed with life and turn to gardening as a way to feel connected to the world around you. Maybe someday you’ll be able to step into the sun without fear of death.
Level 10 Gardener
Grow a cow plant
Explore as much of the world at night as you can
Visit at least 5 worlds
Meet a human and fall in love as they try to help you see as much of the world as they can.
Gen 10 - The Good
Aspirations: Good Vampire
Traits: Good, Vegetarian, Outgoing
You were raised by two wonderful parents. They were so attentive and you loved seeing how supportive your father was to your mother. Even as he aged faster their love never wavered. And they always made sure you know how much you meant to them. Because of this you grew up truly appreciating life, most of all human life. You did your best to never drink human blood. And much to the disappointment of your elders you set free the humans that were trapped in the dungeon of the estate.
Fall in love with one of the trapped humans in the basement.
Dedicate yourself to finding a cure for vampirism for your mother so she can finally step into the sun.
Decide if the Vampire line ends with you (you also take the cure) or you stay a vampire but continue your vegetarian ways.

Sweet Nightingale
One of the neat side effects about my job writing guides for Rock Paper Shotgun is getting exposed to stuff that I don't typically touch. For example, the survival/crafting genre, which blew up in the 2010s when I was living in Asia and too busy trying to survive in real life. I was aware of games like The Long Dark, of course, and I thought Valheim looked okay when it came out. But as someone who's never been thrilled with the idea of chopping down digital trees for wood (except for maintaining my farm in Harvest Moon 64), survival games have mostly fallen off my radar.
Obviously, that's no longer the case thanks to work. Survival games are perhaps one of the few video game genres out there that remain opaque as hell, therefore making them perfect fodder for guide writing. And this year has already seen several big survival games released, with Palworld taking up far more of my mental space than I ever would've imagined for much of January and February. (My lukewarm take is that Palworld is okay. Not really my thing, but I get why people like it as both a meme game and a "I can't believe Nintendo isn't suing, because that Electrabuzz ripoff is equipped with a GUN, somebody stop him!")
But this post is not about Palworld. It is, rather, about Nightingale, an enchanting survival title made by Inflexion Games that unfortunately launched into Early Access only a few weeks after Palworld probably stole some of its potential player base. I had the chance to consume a fair bit of Nightingale prior to its release, and I also wrote a few guides on it for work. I'm not sure if it's actually going to take off - its current player numbers aren't as high as expected, and the game bristles with a special degree of enrapturing jank that's definitely not going to appeal to everyone. Case in point: half of my colleagues hated the pre-Early Access UI, which made several unusual decisions, including flipping the usual hotbar configuration present in these sorts of games. This has since been rectified, and now the UI is more streamlined and accessible, though also a bit more boring, in my eyes.
I think Nightingale sticks with me precisely because it boasts an aesthetic and setting that are very much not boring. We're talking about a gaslight fantasy atmosphere that feels a tad Neil Gaiman, if he were channeling the same stuff that inspired Alan Moore to write The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Apparently, Nightingale's concept was based on the novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, which I have not read but now want to, and the game starts by placing you as an inhabitant of a late 1800s reality inextricably linked with Fae beings. A big calamity happens, and folks exploring the Faewilds are tossed into disparate realms and separated from their magical hub city, dubbed Nightingale. You have to help your character survive in these bizarre biomes, which are filled with Wonderland-style beasts and floating sculptures in the sky. Hopefully by constructing your own estate in these magical outposts and allying with other Realmswalkers, all of you will one day reach the city of Nightingale once more.
I am an absolute pervert for this sort of alternate history Victorian stuff, and if I'm going to be very frank, my initial reaction when playing Nightingale was wondering if its enchanting setting was "wasted" on a survival/crafting game. It's the sort of thing I'd expect to see in a tabletop RPG (which I would gladly play), not a game where you need to construct a sewing table and then kill 5 hippos so you can skin their hides and put those hides on the aforementioned sewing table and wait a minute so you can craft a little cape for yourself.
I'm not the only one to have this thought, and there's a whole calvacade of commentators who posted similar things on every Rock Paper Shotgun article devoted to the game. In a nutshell, it seems to come down to the fact that many outspoken individuals don't like the survival gameplay loop of running around chopping down trees so you can craft a better axe to chop down more trees, but thus far they've safely been able to ignore most crafting games because they typically take place in forests or post-apocalyptic environments that are usually pretty samey. Nightingale is not samey, which makes people want to play it and then lament that it's not in their ideal genre of choice.
Once again, I really need to expoud upon how much charm this game has. Your guide through the tutorial is a smooth talking fey with a poncy vocabulary named Puck. Umbrellas serve as in-game gliders to make you descend from great heights like Mary Poppins. And even though the basic survival loop is there - yes, you've still got to farm those damn hippos - there is a nifty tarot card system in place that procedurally generates the worlds your intrepid Realmswalker is forced to confront. It's a mishmash of ideas that really feels like it's ripped from the pages of some Game Master's steampunk world (there I go again, going off on how much I'd like to play a Nightingale TTRPG), and even though it's largely busywork, eventually you can get a rifle that shoots ice ammo and a legendary set of "armor" that's really just a Victorian tweed suit. By damnation, it's appealing.
It's this sense of originality that makes me want to play Nightingale more, and injects within me the strength to overlook the jankiness in the combat and UI that make me ocasionally feel like I'm playing a game from the late 2000s. (The first Witcher, are ya there? I'm reminded of you.) And I daresay it's unfair to say that Nightingale's eclectic setting is "wasted" on a survival/crafting experience, which is a harsh statement that probably does a disservice to both Inflexion Games and to the entire genre. While these sorts of games might not be my automatic cuppa, Nightingale actually makes me want to play more of them, and I plan on purchasing V Rising next month, which I missed out on back when it came out.
All this is a roundabout way of saying that there's power in a good setting and a striking coat of paint. Sometimes that's all we need to overlook gameplay loops that do not initially appeal to us, and I'm sure there's a whole audience out there that cared little for crafting in the wilderness but loved monster collecting. Palworld was the honeypot that probably encouraged them to look deeper into what survival games had to offer. For me, Nightingale performs a similar function.
There's also the fact that I appreciate it when games take risks and dare to step outside of the cornerstones of what's considered safe and sellable in their respective genres. Nightingale probably wouldn't have stood out nearly as much as a CRPG, for instance. There are already gaslight fantasy RPGs out there, and you can still buy Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura on Steam. But there's nothing quite like this in the survival space, and thus we have something brave and bold, unique and odd - a potent combination that compels me to stay a while in its mysterious Fae red room. I certainly hope that Nightingale survives its turbulent Early Access period, because while chopping down trees and building houses might not be what I'm immediately looking for when I sit down to play a game, stick a tophat on me and say I'm doing it in the realm of A Midsummer Night's Dream and my mind has the potential to change. It's all about the flavor, in other words, and Nightingale has that in spades.

JJK Season 2 Episode Predictions
Manga SPOILERS for season 2. Just having fun making predictions for what chapters the episodes will cover. It's been rumored that s2 will have 23 episodes on twitter. No official source yet but it's probably from the next issue of Jump.
Season 1 ended with chapter 63. So, starting off with chapter 64!
1. Ch 64 - A super cute episode covering Ozawa's crush on Yuji. It'll be a nice nostalgic episode establishing of a better time before all our hearts are ripped to shreds later.
Hidden Inventory/Gojo's Past arc
2. Ch 65-67 - Official start of Hidden Inventory/Gojo's Past arc. Ends with the revelation of Riko's bounty.
3. Ch 68-70 - Starts with Toji explaining his plans. Satoru and Suguru deal with the bounty hunters attacking Riko's school. Kuroi gets kidnapped... which was a non-issue, so... Okinawa! Ends with Satoru getting stabbed in the back after returning to the school. Man, I can't believe these animators would be so cruel to end the episode on such a cliffhanger, amirite?
4. Ch 71-73 - Starts with that great Toji flashback.
Just an overall high tension, tragic episode where Toji fucks up all the kids. Ends with him remembering who Megumi is. Lol.
5. 74-75 - I'd start with a scene where Toji is walking away from Suguru and cutting to Satoru's finger twitch that was shown at the end of ch 73 first. Then back to Toji, who drops off Riko's corpse. And we get the iconic battle, round II, Satoru v. Toji.
6. 76-77 - Suguru finds Satoru with Riko's body at the Time Vessal Association. The year of Suguru's downward spiral. Ends on the massacre report.
7. 78-79 - Satoru is shook. The big breakup. Satoru meeting Megumi. Satoru wakes up in the present to the first years.
Post-credits scene where the first years go find Mechamaru. Episode properly ends with Geto and Mahito approaching him.
----
Notes: I can't believe I thought Gojo's past arc would initially only take like 3-4 episodes. It's definitely closer to 5-6 now that I've typed this all up. lol. 16 episodes left now.
Shibuya Incident arc
8. Ch 79-82 - Picking up where we left off, with Mahito and Kenjaku discussing their deal with Kokichi/Mechamaru. Whole episode is just dedicated to the Mechamaru fight. Ends on this ominous scene:
9. Ch 83-85 - Welp, here's Shibuya Incident arc. Begins with incident report lessgoooo. I love this narrative framing device in JJK tbh.
Introducing our allies and antagonists. The absolute massacre that starts in Shibuya station once Satoru is confronted with the disaster curses. Ends partway through ch 85; with Satoru exorcising Hanami.
10. Ch 85-89 - An auxiliary manager explains how the curtain around Shibuya station works. Yuji v. Grasshopper Curse, I expect would be relatively short? Ends with the train packed with transfigured humans coming into the station and Satoru casting Domain. Satoru is exhausted, and then the episode ends with:
11. Ch 90-91 - Opens with the flashback of Kenjaku explaining his plan to the curses. Kenjaku reveals himself to Satoru. Portable Mechamaru appearing on Yuji's ear. Satoru... getting sealed in the Prison Realm. Omg, it's here. Ends with Satoru having "faith in everyone." 😭 Goodbye for at least another season, bby.
12. Ch 92-95 - 9:22PM Allies meeting, concerned that it's been a while since Satoru's gone in. Yuji tells all about the sealing. Ino, Megumi, and Yuji team up. Ep ends with the knowledge that Ogami, that weird grandma, is trying to resurrect Toji.
13. Ch 96-99 - Begins with the curse users' backstory; Satoru's birth. Yuji et al. fight against them. Toji resurrected. Begin Nobara v. Shigemo fight. Episode ends in affirmation of Nobara being a badass and telling Akari to hide; so it's only partway through ch 99.
14. Ch 99-102 - Continue Nobara v. Shigemo. Nanami joins in and wrecks Shigemo's shit. Mei Mei & Ui Ui v. Smallpox Curse. Choso v. Yuji begins ahhh. Ends when Mei Mei wins her fight and Kenjaku comes to compliments her.
15. Ch 103-106 Choso v. Yuji continues. Choso has the memory that never was. End with Mimiko and Nanako finding Yuji; partway through ch 106.
16. Ch 106-109 - Starting partway through ch 106; 10:20PM Naobita, Maki, and Nanami v. Dagon. Megumi to the rescue! Ends with the gang trying to escape Dagon's Domain, only for Toji to pop up like a daisy.
17. Ch 110-112 - Toji kicks Dagon's ass. Megumi separates from the others and the Naobita, Maki, and Nanami face Jogo. Mimiko, Nanako, and Jogo all feed Yuji fingers. Sukuna kills the twins. Ends with Jogo terrified; partway through ch 112.
18. Ch 112-116 - Continuing right where 112 left off; Sukuna asking what Jogo wants. Toji v. Megumi fight. Kusakabe and Panda face Suguru's curse users before they're rudely interrupted by Sukuna v. Jogo. Sukuna and Uraume reunite. Ends with Shigemo freaking out about something Megumi did.
19. Ch 117-121 - An absolutely somber as shit episode. Starts at 11:05PM Shigemo v. Megumi where Megumi initiates Mahoraga. Sukuna summons Domain and destroys Shibuya. Yuji finally regains consciousness and is devastated. Nanami is killed by Mahito, and the episode ends on Yuji's facial reaction.
20. Ch 121-124 - Start off right at that last page on ch 121; Yuji is furious. Mahito v. Yuji. Mahito v. Nobara. It's like "Accomplices" part 2. But then Mahito touches Nobara's face; partway through ch 124.
21. Ch 124-128 - Starts partway through ch 124; Nobara's childhood flashback, adult Saori, the first years hanging out, etc., etc. Mahito beats up a shocked Yuji. Todo and Aarata show up and Todo tells Yuji to get up, which where I imagine the first half of the ep to end.
The Kyoto school are on the train, where the last remnants of Mechamaru talks to Miwa. Yuji and Todo v. Mahito. Episode ends partway through ch 128 where they've "brought out 120% of their potential."
22. Ch 128-132 - Cont. right where we left off ch 128. My absolute favorite sequence where Yuji chases Mahito through the metaphorical snow drift. Can't wait to see this animated.
Episode ends on Kenjaku appearing and offering to save Mahito.
23. Ch 133-136 - Starts with catching up on what everyone was up to until this point. Kenjaku bloodies Yuji up a bit and consumes Mahito. Everyone shows up and teams up against Kenjaku. Including Choso! Then Yuki! Episode/season ends with Kenjaku bouncing with the Prison Realm.
Wow, what a foreboding and depressing end to the season. lmao.
It'll be fun to see how accurate or completely off base I was with how I divided the chapters. Just about 2 weeks left!

hmmm
i gotta update my graphic
2.2 with robin and boothill, 2 phys 5*, no 4* (physical is only missing a pres unit)
2.3 with firefly, possibly sunday? not sure abt a 4* yet or if there will even be one
depending on how long we have between penacony and the next location/however long they want to take between 2.x and 3.0, we will probably get a 2.4 that continues the xianzhou story and possibly meet more xianzhou natives
maybe we'll go back to belobog and get a new jarilo native since our last unit to actually come from belobog was luka i believe, which is also interesting since we got 4 units from the luofu who had no part in the main xz:lf story (huohuo, xueyi, hanya, guinaifen), meanwhile the only jarilo vi unit we got who didnt appear in the main story is luka. when we returned to jarilo vi after the main story we instead got topaz
weve got confirmation that there will be more than one raiden in the game similar to how theres more than one bronya, so acheron is our first mei and then the second one will probably be the proper Raiden Mei unit (probably lightning destruction?) and she'll probably be released as a flagship unit for the japanese themed world that sparkles most likely from; the japanese world is also probably what that new planar set is themed after
the planar set izumo gensei and the takama divine realm has one half thats a neon-cyberpunk japan and the other half is a red field with swords. acheron could also have a relation to the takama divine realm then? but the mei in the trailer with the horns also had a similar background so they could simply be unrelated. the japanese name dor the planar set basically juxtaposes the two halves of izumo being a super technologically advanced mortal world to the takama realm being a godly and immortal battlefield mired with weapons
curious about march's deal; will she stay a 4 star no matter what "memory" she is embodying? or will it be a dh:il situation where we still need to pull for her, but it just means after u obtain her u just shift her 4* pres unit to her 5* [path] unit. it would make sense since i believe dh and dh:il cannot be placed on the same team so it streamlines the process and declutters the ui. im also wondering if her "memories" will allow her to access non playable paths like the remembrance
definitely excited for the story excerpts where we can play as other characters. its gonna be crazy to watch welt try to talk with acheron while he is reminded of mei

what do you think all the marauders characters would study in university?
in my head sirius is an artsy girlie & disgustingly smart but uninterested in majors that would lead to a traditional 9-5 kind of job, so he’d study something in the realm of fine arts or music that allows lots of room for freedom of expression and would lead to an interesting & exciting career (also helps that he’s a trust fund baby & has an inheritance from his guncle to fall back on)
remus is a huge fucking nerd & enjoys to inflict torture upon himself for no reason so he would do something like history or literature where u have to go to like a billion years of grad school to do anything but teach. he would also be that person that double majors just bc it’s hard & he thought he could, then nearly dies bc he’s taking 22 hours in one semester & his bf keeps having drag him out of the library to do human things like eat and sleep
james would do some shit like marketing or mass comm bc he’s a great public speaker & charismatic enough to convince ppl he knows what he’s talking ab. like imagine ur watching the news & some corporation is doing a press release and the person standing behind the mic is a very boisterous james potter. imagine u hired an agency to pitch a print ad campaign for ur newest product launch and its james potter running the slides & convincing u that u need a giant fucking billboard off of a rarely-used highway exit. like it just makes sense
peter’s a wild card tbh & i think he’d have trouble narrowing down what he wants to do bc he’s one of those ppl that’s good at a lot of things but doesn’t have one particular area he’s super attached to or passionate ab. i could see him switching majors like four times his freshman year before landing on something like UI/UX design where u can make a lot of money for knowing how people interact with technology (he’d be the one in high school running his pc into the ground w sims 4 mods & showing all the others a bunch of iOS features & they’ve never heard of) (he taught remus how to use text effects & now he won’t stop spamming the gc w bad pictures of sirius with echo)
#u ask tortoise answers#anon#i love a university au more than anything else in this world#and i mean that wholeheartedly#tortoise writes a novel ab an ask for no reason
