A Complete Guide to Engineered Wood Flooring: Benefits, Styles, and Installation
Engineered wood flooring has become one of the most popular choices for homeowners and interior designers due to its combination of durability, aesthetic appeal, and ease of installation. Unlike traditional hardwood, engineered wood consists of multiple layers that improve its stability and resilience, making it ideal for modern homes that need to balance style with practicality. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about engineered wood flooring, from its construction and benefits to the various styles available and the best methods for installation. Whether you're looking to upgrade a single room or outfit your entire home, engineered wood flooring offers a versatile and cost-effective solution.
Engineered wood flooring is designed to offer the aesthetic beauty of real hardwood combined with modern technology to enhance durability and ease of installation. It consists of a top layer of real wood veneer, supported by multiple layers of plywood, fiberboard, or high-density fiberboard (HDF). These layers are pressed together under high pressure to create a plank that mimics solid wood but is more resistant to changes in moisture and temperature. This construction makes engineered wood an excellent choice for various environments, including areas with fluctuating humidity, such as basements or kitchens.
The growing popularity of engineered wood floors can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, it offers a wide range of design options, as the top layer can be crafted from various wood species, including oak, maple, and walnut. Secondly, it’s easier to install than solid hardwood, as it can be installed using floating, glue-down, or nail-down methods. Lastly, its cost-effectiveness, especially when considering long-term durability and maintenance, makes it a smart investment for homeowners.
Understanding the Construction of Engineered Wood Planks
The construction of engineered wood flooring is what sets it apart from traditional hardwood. The top layer, or "wear layer," is a thin slice of real wood that provides the visual and tactile qualities of genuine hardwood. Beneath this layer, the core consists of multiple layers of plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF), which are stacked in a crisscross pattern. This structure gives engineered wood its enhanced stability and resistance to warping, bending, or shrinking, which can occur with solid wood in humid or dry conditions.
The thickness of the wear layer varies, typically ranging from 1mm to 6mm. Thicker wear layers allow for the floor to be sanded and refinished more times, extending its lifespan. Meanwhile, the core layers are designed to enhance structural integrity. The crisscross pattern of the plywood layers minimizes expansion and contraction, making it ideal for environments with fluctuating temperatures. The base layer, typically made from softwood or another hardwood species, adds further stability to the plank.
Benefits of Engineered Wood Flooring
Engineered wood flooring offers numerous benefits over traditional solid wood and other flooring options. One of the primary advantages is its dimensional stability. Unlike solid hardwood, which expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, engineered wood is less prone to these fluctuations due to its layered construction. This makes it suitable for installation in areas where solid wood would typically not be recommended, such as basements or rooms with radiant heating.
Another key benefit is its versatility in design. Since the top layer is real wood, engineered flooring offers the same authentic appearance as solid hardwood, allowing you to choose from a wide range of species, finishes, and textures. Additionally, engineered wood is available in wider plank sizes, giving homeowners more flexibility when creating their desired aesthetic.
From a cost perspective, engineered wood is often more affordable than solid wood, especially when considering the long-term value. It also requires less maintenance and, depending on the thickness of the wear layer, can be sanded and refinished several times over its lifespan. Engineered wood planks are easier to install, making them ideal for DIY projects or quicker installations in both residential and commercial settings.
Engineered Wood Flooring Styles
Engineered wood flooring comes in a variety of styles, each suited to different design aesthetics. Some of the most popular styles include classic, modern, rustic, and distressed finishes. Classic engineered wood floors, like oak and maple, offer a timeless look that works well in both traditional and contemporary spaces. These floors often have a smooth finish and are available in various shades, from light to dark, allowing you to match the flooring to your interior décor.
For a more modern look, wider and longer planks are trending, as they create a streamlined, spacious feel. Exotic woods like bamboo and teak are also gaining popularity, adding a unique and luxurious touch to modern interiors. Rustic and distressed styles, on the other hand, provide a more textured and natural appearance, with features like hand-scraped surfaces and wire-brushed finishes that give the floor a weathered, lived-in look.
Customization options for engineered wood also include various finishes, from high gloss to matte, and different edge profiles, such as beveled or square edges, allowing for a truly personalized look.
How to Choose the Right Engineered Wood for Your Space
Choosing the right engineered wood flooring for your home or office requires careful consideration of factors like room usage, foot traffic, and existing interior design. If you’re installing flooring in a high-traffic area such as a hallway or living room, consider opting for engineered wood with a thicker wear layer that can withstand frequent use and be refinished multiple times. For spaces prone to moisture, like kitchens and basements, engineered wood with water-resistant core materials will perform better than traditional hardwood.
Your choice of wood species will also influence the overall look and feel of the room. Light-colored woods, such as oak or ash, can make a space feel larger and more open, while darker woods, such as walnut or mahogany, can add warmth and elegance to the space. The plank size and finish should complement your existing furniture and décor. For smaller rooms, wider planks can make the area appear more spacious, while narrower planks may be better suited to larger spaces to create a balanced look.
Conclusion
Engineered wood flooring offers the perfect combination of beauty, durability, and flexibility, making it a top choice for homeowners and designers alike. Its layered construction provides enhanced stability, making it suitable for a variety of environments, while its diverse styles and finishes ensure a perfect match for any interior design. Whether you're looking for a cost-effective alternative to solid hardwood or need a flooring solution for high-moisture areas, engineered wood delivers both performance and aesthetic appeal. With proper care, this flooring option can provide decades of use, making it a wise investment for any space.

“aaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!”
The sound of a scream rarely can pull your attention away from your D.D.D. nowadays.
Oh no, you know far better by now.
The days where once you panicked with worry, quickly stumbling over yourself to find which one of the brothers was in danger were long over - now that you know the only real danger in this house hold is the fact that they are dangers to themselves.
You lay lazily on your bed, scrolling through your Devilgram feed on your phone when you hear it: a scream off in the distance, slowly getting louder.
Actually, not louder. Closer.
You can hear it through the thick, oak door that divides you from the rest of the house. There’s some extra noise there too. Perhaps, one or two pairs of footsteps quickly falling on the hardwood floor in succession out in the hallway.
The only action you bother to take is glancing up from your device just to make sure your door is shut, and locked.
You expect it, you could even count down the seconds till it happens. Like clockwork, ever so predictable. The footsteps only get louder until you hear the inevitable banging on the other side of the wood.
Knocking, vigorous knocking. A loud fist slamming against your door so hard and so frantically you thought it might break.
“MC! Are ya in there? Can ya open the door please? Preferably within the next ten seconds.”
You roll your eyes, not bothering to move. Nope, you don’t want any part in this. You can ignore it all you want though, you know how persistent he is. Mammon always gets what he wants.
“MC, please. Ya gotta open up. I’ll do anythin’ ya want for the whole day- no, week if ya let me in!”
Now, that was an interesting proposition. Having a demon butler doesn’t sound too shabby. But Mammon isn’t Barbatos. And the idiot forgets he’s already pact bound to you, forced to do whatever you command on a whim.
You roll your eyes, calling out to him from your bed. “Hmm. Tempting, but not good enough.”
“Not good enough?! Whaddya mean not good enough you lousy-“
He’s cut off by a monstrous roar, one you’d distinctly recognize anywhere. Oh good, Levi summoned Lotan.
Mammon’s knocking gets faster as he pulls on your door handle, practically shaking the frame.
“Please please please please please!”, he pleads with you, sounding increasingly more panicked.
“Okay, okay, fine! I’ll take ya out to that nice restaurant you’ve been yappin’ about all week, that really fancy one!”
Now, you know Mammon good and well, so you know good and well to be suspicious of him and his motives. But, you trust him well enough to not flake out on a deal. He’s a business man and all that.
“Tonight?”, you question, trying to dull the hint of excitement in your tone.
“Yes! Tonight, fine whatever! Just open up already!”
You hear an angry shout of Mammon’s name that could only come from the third eldest getting louder, nearer into earshot.
“Fine.”
You open the door with no warning nor fanfare, causing Mammon, who had been practically leaning his whole body against it, to fall directly flat onto his face in front of you.
You hear a muffled “thanks” from the floor as you quickly shut and lock your door, effectively hiding the troublemaker from the sea monster (and his owner’s) eyesight.
“What’d you do this time?”, you question, arms crossed and peering at the man on your floor with feigned annoyance.
He slowly raises himself up, pushing off the floor and sitting up. He puts a hand to his head, rubbing at a tender area that must have hit the hardwood as you reach out a hand to help him up.
“Argh… What makes ya think I did somethin?”, he grumps. “Do ya really have that little faith in me?”
All it takes is an eyebrow raise from your unamused face before he growls at you- and spills his misdeeds.
“I thought maybe Levi wouldn’t notice if some of those little anime dolls of his went missin’”.
You sigh at him and shake your head in disappointment, multitasking as you take a look at the spot he was rubbing on his forehead, pushing his bangs out of the way to see if it bruised.
“How many did you take?”
“Only one!”, he says, almost as if he’s insulted that you’d insinuate that he took more- but then he falls apart under your gaze.
“Or three.”
“How about you give them back, huh?”, you muse, guiding him to sit down on your bed while you move about the room, walking over to a small antique looking ice chest you kept in the room as a mini fridge and opening the lid, peering inside before moving to your desk to grab something from the drawer.
“Cause I kinda loaned them out-“
You throw a dangerous look over your shoulder at him causing him to flinch and gulp.
“to a pawn shop.”
You make a few small ‘tsk’ sounds at him, reaching into the chest to pull out a handful of ice, wrapping them in the handkerchief you pulled from your desk drawer.
You walk over to him and place it over the red mark appearing on his forehead. Using your hand not holding the makeshift ice pack, you grab one of his, moving it up towards the bundle to replace your own with his, making him hold it instead.
“You know Lucifer’s gonna kill you AND Levi when he finds the hallways flooded with sea water for the second time in a month”, you say, taking his chin in your hand and carefully tilting his head side to side to look for any other cuts, scraps, or marks. You could pretend to be annoyed all you want. You both knew you didn’t mind playing nurse for him.
“Why do ya think I’m hidin’ from em ?”
You let out a small laugh, but shake your head at him all the same.
“Well, I’m looking forward to our impromptu date, but first we’re gonna head to that pawn shop to buy back his figurines, okay golden boy?”
He grunts at you before making eye contact and melting. He could never say no to you, not under that gaze.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll even buy him another one to go with ‘em. He’s been talkin’ about some new magical girl or whatever, I’m sure I could find one of her.”
You smile at him, cupping his cheek in your hand.
“Perfect, sounds like a plan. Let’s get going”, you smile, moving in to lay a kiss on his cheek, only stopping when you both hear a trickling sound.
You look over at your door only to find water beginning to flow underneath and into your room.
Aaaannnddd, the hallways flooded.
“We are going to have to leave through the window though.”

***You***
The cold air is deceptive; it nips at your skin, raising goosebumps despite the warm inviting appearance of your surroundings. Tall trees—oaks, hickories, and basswoods—clutter densely, forming a barrier that shields the land from the outside world and cages bittersweet memories of the past. You’ve followed your father through these woods before, navigating rocky hills and leaping over thick, ingrown branches to reach another unmarked spot for exploring.
Deep purple hues of the twilight sky cast elongated, eerie shadows over the forest, and they fold over the tall grass like dark, unnatural fingers. This definitely isn’t real. Everything around you right now brings painful memories—but they’re are not as sharp as what you feel in reality.
In reality, the ache is persistent, pulsing weakly in your veins, flaring up with every fleeting memory of your father—his infectious laugh, his hands putting you on his shoulders as you walked to football games, or the early mornings spent huddled together, his hand guiding your binoculars to focus on a bird in the distance.
This is definitely a dream.
You know it also from the feel of the grassy meadow beneath your toes, the blades soft and ticklish against your ankles, the usual worry of ticks far from your mind. Vivid wildflowers—yellows, pinks, and blues—sway in a nonexistent breeze. The dirt path that once led to your father’s house has vanished, taken over by the soil and grass, erasing years of footprints.
The house he dreamt of building, a two-story structure crafted by his own hands, now stands as nothing more than a decaying skeleton. There is no roof, only stretches of drywall reaching towards the twilight sky, as if trying to reach the heavens and falling short.
As you walk further across the foundation, the environment shifts around you, the air folding in on itself and twisting like the patterns in a kaleidoscope. Your fingers trail along the phantom walls that spring up, and your feet glide over the conjured glossy finish of hardwood floors. This empty space is a blueprint nestled deep in your memory: bedrooms that will give privacy, a living room that will host family gatherings, a fireplace that is now roaring in orange and yellows.
“There you are,” a familiar voice calls to you, sending a jolt through your heart that tightens your chest as if you’re about to cough. As you turn the corner, reality morphs once again, unfolding into a meticulously designed kitchen with forest green cabinets adorned with brass knobs, a deep porcelain sink and shiny stainless-steel appliances. The surreal surroundings are dizzying, blurring and swirling in your vision. But the figure you know—his broad back turned to you, shoulders stretching and pulling as he wipes something in front of him—that grounds you, preventing you from drifting away.
“It finally came in, take a look.”
He radiates an intense warmth as you stand beside him. Even with your arms barely touching, the heat feels suffocating, instantly causing you to break into a sweat. Just being next to him makes your throat constrict, choked and searing, it’s nearly impossible to speak. But with each stroke of his hand on the new granite counter top, sweeping a fiberglass cloth, his love and comfort are palpable in the stiffing heat, settling on your skin to relax you.
“Looks good huh?” He’s proud, and even though you don’t have the strength to look up at his face, you know he’s beaming. “Once it all comes together, it’s gonna look beautiful.”
His words stir a deep-seated guilt within you, so fierce it makes you want to scratch at your own skin, as if to physically scrape away the emotional turmoil the festers beneath the layer of your dermis. You press your toes into the hardwood, cross your arms and dig your fingernails into your arms. It’s hotter now—god you’re burning up. Your body prickles with beads of moisture as you watch him tirelessly wipe over an already clean surface.
It’s incessant, and with each swipe the guilt rises further, urging you to flee from a conversation that will never happen. You don’t really know about an afterlife but if there is one, does he know what happened? Is he rooted in the present, watching you occasionally to see what you’ve failed to do? Is he disappointed in you?
Maybe if you focus on his steady motions, close your eyes, and just breathe, you might find yourself back in your room when you open them again. After all, none of this is real—it will never be real. This kitchen, these rooms, the wooden floorboards, and the beautiful roaring fireplace. The remnants of all of this are written on a blueprint somewhere, collecting dust for the last two decades.
He calls out to you again, his voice oddly distant though he stands right beside you. He sounds weary, as if he’s struggling to breathe, and when you glance at his hand moving across the counter, it’s no longer vibrant and almond-brown but ashen, marked by blown-out veins. Lifting your eyes, you meet not the father you remember, but his final, frail image—his sunken skin, his life slipping away too soon, anchored to the world only by the fragile thread of a nasal cannula.
“You okay, honey?” he croaks, concern etched in every syllable.
You open your mouth to speak, but fear grips your entire being, squeezing you like you’re a piece of fruit to be juiced. The terror is paralyzing, and you find yourself unable to face him any longer without crumbling into tears. A deep, ragged breath cuts through the silence, rasping painfully in your throat as you stammer, “I’m sorry, I couldn’t—“
Your eyes snap open, sticky and heavy with exhaustion, wincing against the harsh glare of sunlight that peaks through your maroon curtains. The embers of your dream fade into nothingness and unforgiving reality slides into place with ease. The heat of the dream is replaced by a chilling dampness; the sheets cling to your sweaty skin, and the fiery soreness in your throat reminds you of your still raging cold. When you swallow, it feels like sandpaper across raw flesh.
It’s been almost a year since you’ve dreamt of your father. It’s not that you don’t like to dream about him; actually, you cherish every memory, even the painful ones. But dreaming of him in the house—his house that has remained untouched since his death—it consumes you with regret for the role you’ve been unable to fulfill. You don’t have the time. You don’t have the money. All things that are out of your control but still hold you by the throat.
It’s too much for your mother, and you don’t blame her. The love she has for your father never really left. It lingered in her second marriage and came back full force in her divorce. So she stays away from all things related to him when she can.
Your eyes wander to the corner of your office desk where the old property deed lies, rolled up and bound by a simple rubber band. The edges are brown and dusty, much like the blueprints in your dream.
Why do you even keep it there?
Maybe it’s a reminder of him, just something physical you can glance at every day even if it hurts. Maybe it’s there to spur you to make that thousandth trip to city hall—the one that always ends in tears. Maybe, with these next few days off, you can try again. You’ll be stronger this time, more aggressive with the bald-headed piece of shit that always gives you trouble.
Or maybe not.
The flare of your throat is harsh enough to push away any other thoughts. There’s a frustration that always comes with getting sick, it makes simple things extreme when there is no need for it. Your body is too hot and also too cold, your throat burns with every swallow no matter how many throat drops you take, your lungs spasm with the tiniest breath to cough, your nose is so congested that it makes you regret taking breathing for granted. It’s overstimulating as hell.
You wince against the harsh sun again, turning your head further into your pillow before your eyes fall on your nightstand. There’s a tall glass of water and two pills. You don’t remember setting them there, but you sit up to throw them back anyway and down the water quickly. The coolness soothes your throat and with each swallow, the haze of last night lifts.
You know Toji brought you home because your car is out of commission and he refused to let you take the bus. He helped you out last night—literally carrying you up to your apartment because you were so achy and exhausted you could hardly stand. You remember him leaning casually against the brick wall of your complex, that insufferably charming smirk playing on his lips as he watched you go through every stage of defiance for help.
“I’m not getting any younger, princess.”
That name. You hate that name.
It was a taunt that made you eventually give up, too damn tired to snap at him. You gave in to the warmth of strong muscles and the scent of detergent, cologne, and something that’s just Toji. You remember the lack of strain in his neck, the ease in which he breathed as he took step after step like you weighed nothing, and the analytical gaze of jade irises beaming in the night as he took in his surroundings. It almost felt like he was assessing the area, checking every corner when he hit another flight of steps to make sure no one was lurking nearby.
As you think back, your hands automatically press against your cheeks, warmed by the flush of memory as your blood pumps faster in your veins from the rising shock. Toji had drawn you an Epsom salt bath to soak your muscles, rolling his eyes as you feverishly barked at him for privacy to undress. That gruff attentiveness continued as he watched you like a hawk as you slurped down the bowl of canned soup he warmed, and then gently nudging you to bed with a press to the small of your back. Even his firm grip on your arm as he wielded a syringe of cough syrup—which you tried to refuse—is clear in your mind.
“You’re burning up, stop fucking fighting me! What kind of doctor won’t take medicine?”
“This doctor. I would rather lick the floor than taste cough syrup. It’s just a cold. Go away,” you remember protesting, delirious with a stubbornness that has only gotten worse with age.
He had pressed the tip of the syringe to the side of your mouth, eyes narrowed and annoyed. “Open your mouth and—OW, why are you biting people! Girl, what the hell?!”
“Fuck,” you groan now, your hands digging into your eye sockets as the memory plays like a broken record behind your eyelids. You bit him like a fucking maniac. Who does that?! You remember giving in because you felt bad but still…
As a kid, you were the same—so against the taste of medicine that your mother had to pin you down.
But now? At the ripe age of too damn grown? You’re mortified.
Your hands slide down your face as you sigh in the silence, which feels heavier than before. Did he leave last night? You can’t remember anything beyond smacking your lips to get rid of the cherry taste of cough medicine and rolling over to pass out.
Your body isn’t as achy as last night as you climb out of bed. You slip into dry clothes and throw off your bonnet, ruffling the curls loose before you snatch up your phone and leave the room in search of him. The air in your apartment, usually so familiar, now carries a subtle disturbance—a reminder of his increasing presence. Only the distant chirps of cardinals outside punctuate the silence. As you enter the living room, you notice Toji’s black jacket casually draped over a kitchen stool and his car keys abandoned on the counter.
Your fuzzy socks muffle your steps as you approach the counter, where a covered glass bowl sits alongside a small note. You hate the lurch of your heart skipping as you snatch it up, your movements fueled by a mix of dread and anticipation.
Make sure you eat it all.
You can practically hear his gruff voice through the words, rough and serious, a subtle layer of care that’s unique to him. The thought makes you snort softly, relief washing over you with the distant thought that…he didn’t leave. But that relief is a push and pull, it’s frustrating to you because you’re unsure of what you want, even though you want more and moreof it. More of him.
As you pop open the lid of the container, the steam hitting your nose, your phone rings, your eyes rolling on reflex as you look at the caller ID. It’s a work day for your cousin, you can tell by the sleek reading glasses she only wears to comb over legal documents. Her shiny kinky hair is pulled up into a neat bun with not a strand out of place, edges laid to perfection, dark lip liner with a clear gloss on full lips, and she looks professional and uniquely Rene. Dark brown eyes narrow at you, the corners pointed in a cat’s eye with fresh black eyeliner, her expression tightening. Your mind automatically conjures the phrase you know she’s about to say.
“What do I have to do—”
“—to make sure you’re not dead,” she finishes in real time, her voice a blend of concern and familiar exasperation. “I was texting you all night.”
This is a well-worn interaction between you both; you work for days on end and disappear from the world, Rene reels you back in with stern care that rivals your own mother.
Your fingernail idly traces Toji’s handwriting from his note. “It was a rough night. My car wouldn’t start, I had to catch the bus and it made me late, and then work was just a nightmare. I’m sick, everything hurts, and Toji had to pick me up—”
“Why don’t we back up a little bit,” she interjects, elegant eyebrows arching up in wicked surprise, your well-being entirely forgotten because your cousin is a nosy bitch. “Toji was there? Where is he?” You shoot her a glare, irritation flaring because you refuse to give in to her curiosity. She holds up her hands in defense, her full lips curving into a smile. “Damn, a bestie can’t ask a question these days? That’s tough.”
Your gaze holds firm, challenging her. She meets it in a well-known game you both play, her eyes widening comically and it’s enough to break you both, laughter filling the kitchen.
“This is why I don’t tell you things,” you lie, coughing into your elbow. “We are just taking it slow. Nothing crazy. I didn’t need his help anyway. I could have taken the bus and taken care of myself. It’s just a cold.”
She laughs again at your bullshit and you sigh in defeat. There’s no point in trying to sugarcoat things with her. Nothing crazy, you say even though can’t even get your thoughts together when it comes to him. You could easily hang up the phone, but annoying or not, you haven’t talked to Rene in days. It’s nice to hear her voice again. Your mother is overseas often for work so calls aren’t as frequent. As for the rest of your family? You’re just…not as close to them.
Rene’s still running cackling keeps your mind from wandering again.
“Alright, it’s not funny anymore,” you snap as you grab a spoon from a kitchen drawer, turning back to Toji’s leftover food with a frown.
“I’m sorry! Really! But come on, it’s just classic you—the baddest bitch I know, but here you are, refusing any chance of help even though you want it so bad. Hard-headed as hell,” she chuckles, her voice warming with the years of friendship between you.
You pause, spoon in hand over the steaming bowl of soup, struck by the truth in her words. Stubbornness is your armor and you rarely let it slip, only few know what’s behind it. Even though she teases, it hurts. It hurts because it carries history—reminders of every instance you’ve pushed help away. It wraps around those jabs from your family, from the men you’ve been with.
Mean because you demand respect so you can weed out those who aren’t worth your time.
Defensive because you’ve been hurt too often.
Uncompromising and fierce, and that’s anyone who tries to get too close—never stays.
You clench your teeth together. “Rene, I’m not—” you start to protest, but the latch of the front door opening makes you raise the spoon in alarm.
It's Toji.
He walks into your home as if he owns the place, his presence so commanding it seems to fill every corner, snuffing the lights and sucking the air from the room. His gaze sweeps through the space, and when his emerald eyes finally settle on you, you feel the weight of his attention.
His shirt is stained with grease, and raven locks, messy from the July humidity, sticks to his forehead and sides of his neck.
“You won’t get far if you’re trying to stab me with that,” he teases, nodding towards the spoon in your hand. Though his tone is light, the underlying seriousness suggests he’s not entirely joking. He’s strong enough to disarm you and you wouldn’t mind a big man like him trying to—
The spoon clatters against the granite counter top as you slap it down and force your mind to shut the hell up.
He takes only two steps before he’s standing in front of you, analytical eyes scanning you in seconds—a look so intense that it feels like he’s trying to memorize you and understand hidden layers you’d rather keep concealed. Alarmingly thorough and you’re still trying to process him being this close, his proximity bringing an electricity you feel even before his lips press a soft, almost possessive kiss on your cheek, like he’s been waiting—itching for contact.
Rene’s startled cough cracks through the phone, mirroring your own internal shock. Toji is making your fever worse because it’s hot as hell now, the hairs rising on your neck as you gape like a fish.
“W-what are you doing…” you begin to ask, but the words die in your dry mouth when he pulls back. His eyes linger close to yours—too close and sliding across your nose, your cheeks, your lips. He still smells like cologne, but now there’s sweat and a muskiness of exertion and outdoors that makes your head swim with dread and desire.
“Where’s your toolbox?” he asks, putting a leash on your thoughts before they run away from you.
You clear your throat and step back, trying to reclaim your space, to fortify your defenses, do anything so you don’t fall apart. “Um, coat closet down the hall. Top shelf.” Your tone is steadier than you feel, pointing mechanically to your hallway.
You look down at your phone when he walks away, exhaling a breath you don’t realize you’re holding. Rene’s watching you with an amused, knowing look, eyebrows rising and falling suggestively. You can’t stand her because you want to laugh and groan at the same time.
“Girl,” Rene chimes, voice dripping with insinuation and not low enough because she doesn’t care who hears her. “I’m sure if you take him for a ride again, you’ll feel a little better.”
“When she’s not sick,” Toji calls from the hallway, your eyes widening at the implication of him listening in. “That kind of ride takes a little work.”
You gawk at the empty space of your hallway. Rene hollers and you hope to god she gets written up for being too loud.
“I know that’s right, Toj—”
You hang up and slam the phone down with more force than necessary.
Toji returns with the toolbox, smirking and completely unphased by his remark and just how unsettled you look by it. He motions with his head to the bowl of soup in front of you.
“Eat.”
It’s a command, gentle but firm, and you bristle not just at the directive, but at your own conflicting impulses—to bare your teeth and snap at his attempt of care or to melt under his attention.
Toji doesn’t wait for an answer, just studies you a moment longer, seemingly satisfied with what he sees, and disappears out the front door. The quiet buzz of the cardinals outside fills the silence he leaves behind.
You’re left standing there, a hand squeezing your phone on the counter like a vice, your mind struggling to remain upright in a storm of emotions that he stirs up within you. Unsettling and soothing, your chest fluttering like butterflies wings against your rib cage. Maybe it’s just a heart palpitation, this intensity—this feeling. Nanami can do an EKG when you return to work in a few days. And he better be there, because he’s the very reason why you had to pick up so many shifts in the first place.
Rene’s giggles still echo in your ears as you exhale a shaky breath and grip the metal spoon in your hand again.
***
“What are you doing?”
Your question cuts through the ambient city hum and the rustle of trees surrounding the parking lot of your complex. Toji is hunched over the hood of your car, hands deep in it’s guts, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration.
The summer sun beats down on you both, yet you’re wrapped in Toji’s jacket to cover your exposed legs. It was the first thing you grabbed when you rushed out of the apartment but it’s too big, the hem brushes against your knees, the sleeves dangling past your hands. You push them up again, feeling simultaneously protected and vulnerable under his gaze as he turns to face you. The jacket feels like a shield, but also a reminder of how much space he’s beginning to occupy in your life.
“Your starter is bad,” he grunts, showing you a car part smeared with oil. It looks expensive, way more than an oil change, and panic flares in your belly briefly as the numbers fluctuate in your mind. If it’s too much, it’ll probably be weeks before you can take your car to the shop.
You’re a doctor, but doctors don’t start making good money for…awhile.
“How much do you think it will be for a new one?” You sigh, mentally calculating the number of zeros the mechanic is going to throw at you. At least Toji saved you some money for a diagnostics test.
“I already ordered the part.”
The admission hits you like a truck.
You gape at him, fumbling and overwhelmed. “You didn’t—I could have done all of this myself. I don’t need your help, Toji.”
The words taste bitter as they drip from your tongue, a defensive reflex from years of self-reliance. Of course you’re grateful, but the frustration that he’s seen a need you hadn’t voiced, that he’s filled it without asking, that’s what stirs the deep discomfort. It’s not just the help—it’s the intimacy of it, the presumption that he can anticipate your needs.
The weight of his jacket on your shoulders no longer feels comforting.
His reaction is immediate, a flash of annoyance flickering over his features, the scar on the side of his lips twisting as he frowns and snatches a rag from the hood of the car.
“So, what, you were going to trust some corner-shop mechanic to rip you off?”
His accusation is justified, and almost instantly, that phrase parrots in your mind.
Let me be nice to you. Let me be nice to you.
“Yep, that was the plan,” you retort, your voice lacks conviction, weak and drowned out by the steady thump of your own heart as he walks closer. He drags the rag between his knuckles, collecting the dirt in the seams.
“You want me to let some old fuck tear your shit up? Even though I know what I’m doing? Not happening.”
His assurance should be overwhelming, but you find yourself irresistibly drawn to it. He moves closer, and instinctively, your muscles tense, your toes curling inside your fuzzy socks and blue Crocs. With every inch that disappears between you both, your mind fires with mixed signals: go back to the safety of your apartment or surrender to the magnetic pull of him. God, you’ve only been awake for two hours, but the emotional whiplash just might knock you back out.
“You told me to earn you, so I am. You need to let me.”
His directness, unyielding and raw, hits you harder than you expect. It’s not just his physical presence that’s imposing—it’s the sheer force of his will, loud and insisting that you realize he’s not leaving anytime soon.
Your reactions and reflexes are not completely intentional, but it isn’t easy to just change who you are. The defenses around you are lined with hard-learned lessons. Your armor and shields to keep yourself safe are all you know. Letting go is like disarming a trap designed to protect you—it requires careful, gentle hands. And you’re terrified that Toji’s large, scarred hands will be too rough.
But you recognize that you can’t tell him to try, and you not do the same. That’s not fair to him, or to whatever this dance is that you are both trying to learn the steps to.
As Toji wipes the sweat from his brow, he unwittingly smears a streak of grease across his forehead, drawing your attention. “If you really feel like you need to repay me, then I don’t know—spend a day with me.”
You lift an eyebrow, surprised at his suggestion. “A whole day?”
Toji nods. “When the part comes in and you’re feeling better. No long ass shifts. No PI cases. Just you and me.” He offers a half-smile, white teeth glimmering in the sun and the look is as disarming as it is dangerous.
Your interactions with Toji, even limited, have always been charged with an intensity you’ve avoided and craved. The meaning behind the car repairs and taking care of you, it’s not just surface level. There’s more to it…he’s trying. So now it’s your turn.
You sniff through a congested nose and clear your rough throat, grabbing the rag from his hands and standing on your toes to reach his forehead. You don’t get very far, but Toji leans down so his forehead is closer to you, holding back a snicker at the height difference. You wipe the grease away, locked on the task because you can feel his stare.
“An entire day with you sounds…ominous.”
“I’ll make sure to feed you,” Toji responds, a comforting rumble that unexpectedly makes you laugh. A small smile blooms across your face and the tension in your stomach eases. You feel a little better, still on a tightrope but you can see the other side. With the grease now gone, you sink back to your slightly achy heels, unable to look away now that you’re both eye-level. “I’ll throw in a thirty-minute lunch break.”
“Make it an hour. Don’t try to short change me,” you challenge, playfully. His eyes, emerald and sharp, scan your face with open curiosity, and you wonder if you’ll ever get used to his intense focus. You press the rag into his white shirt, deliberately looking to the dirt on the fabric to ground your thoughts. “How’s your finger?”
His laughter vibrates through him, a melodic bark that makes you bite the inside of your cheek, and you watch his abdomen tighten under his shirt from the motion. Toji’s fingers brush against yours as he takes the rag from your hand, his touch making your heart jump. The scars on his knuckles catch the sunlight, and you’re struck again with the curiosity of how they got there.
“I’ve had worse.”
You can’t tell if that’s a joke…or if he’s serious, but you don’t have time to ask because his lips press against your cheek, stealing another unasked kiss that leaves you momentarily off-balance. You swat at him in reflex as if he’s a fly in your ears, swallowing a stuttering response that you’re glad doesn’t filter into the air.
“You’re burning up. Go lay down,” he murmurs, almost gentle now. “I’ll finish up here and head out.”
You can stay.
It’s what you want to say. The words are on the tip of your tongue, pressing against the back of your teeth, but you curl the muscle back and purse your lips, offering a tight nod before you turn and walk away.
Your Crocs squeak against the concrete, your pace quickening because you can feel Toji’s eyes on your back, watching you. You’re burning up from the summer air and the jacket that’s around you. But there’s an underlying, electrifying warmth that pulls a small smile on your face, your hands rising to your cheeks to quell the heat flush that you know is not from your fever.

Can I get something about "Baba Jaga's Books" pwease?
indeed!!!! ❤️☺️
The sales room is nothing like you expect based on the gothic, decrepit looks of the rest of the brownstone; it’s domed in a high-reaching skylight of wintery sun, with shiny dark hardwood flooring instead of matted, once-red-now-brown carpet. A wispy spider descends through a beam of dust and sunlight, and reminds you of the woman’s delicate bony fingers tumbling from her skull. There is a large oak desk still smelling of fresh, spicy wood in the very center of the room with an updated, computerized filing system and cash register. In the middle of a far wall, next to a gaping dark corridor, is a large painting of what you assume to be a father and son.
He is tall, looming, with jet black hair that curls under his ears and satiny dark eyes that you think could mesmerize a corpse. His bones are strong and sharp under golden hues of flawless skin and neatly trimmed facial hair, and the red tie looped expertly around his collar would be the only color he sports if not for the plump, soft rose of his lips. Without thinking, you reach out to touch the intricate piece of art and jump back when you feel that familiar gritty texture under your fingertips.
Just a moment ago, you were behind the desk, with a good view of the entire room, and now you are inches away from this handsome man framed in rose gold.
You pull your fingers back and itch the lingering texture off on your blue jeans.
“He painted that.”
The voice from behind makes you jump again, now in the opposite direction, where you slam into the cold frame with the bony blade of your shoulders. You’re much too worried about the beautiful piece of sentimental decor, rather than your own sharp pain, and you turn to make sure you didn’t disturb it, horrified to find that you absolutely did, and scrambling to lift it up and hook the dangling corner back onto its wall fixture from whence it came.
A deep chuckle rumbles behind you, like warning thunder over the crest of rolling hills, and a pair of hands the size of your head gently lift the painting back onto the wall.
You turn to look up at him, and he is close, and his features are sharp and pronounced and familiar. You look back at the painting, just to make sure his likeness is still captured there, too, and did not somehow escape and form into solid matter before you.
“Hello, I’m John. Winston’s son.” He holds out his hand, and you don’t really take and shake it, but rather become enveloped it its warm, calloused sanctuary.
If his voice is thunder, his eyes are the lightning that precedes it, striking and shining despite deep pools of black. You have to look away from him, because his real time stare is far more intimidating than the painted one.

Bring the Pain
Tumblr media
Summary: Daphne Napier used to date Charles Lee Ray when she lived in Chicago... or at least he told her they were dating. He taught her everything she knew, helped her become the person she is today, and she truly believed he loved her. Then he died. Alexis Quinn lives in Hackensack, New Jersey with her girlfriend Tess Monroe. (Chucky/Charles Lee Ray x OC/reader) Words: 4,480
(CHAPTER 2 HERE)
A/N: I have finally finished chapter 1 of Daphne's fic thank u chucky season 3 <3333
Chapter 1
She was cleaning their apartment when she found it.
Alexis had a nice apartment. It was larger than most Jersey apartments, with nice hardwood floors and four bedrooms. It was on a higher floor of a very nice building, in an even nicer part of town that made her question why Alexis hung around people like her and her friends. The furniture inside was older and made of dark oak wood, with deep gem colors and a velvety texture, and in the center of the living room was a large rug made of white fur - she still wasn’t sure if it was real or not. The kitchen had marble counters and stainless steel appliances.
When she had been invited over for the first time a couple of months after meeting Alexis she tried not to show her shock and awe. After all, she never would have guessed Alexis was rich just by looking at her. The strawberry blonde woman often dressed like one of the local goths: all black with fishnets and touches of her favorite color, which was pink, and darker makeup. Alexis described herself as punk, though, and some outfits of hers fit that description, but the moment she saw where she lived she dismissed the idea of Alexis being anything other than a young woman rebelling against her rich parents.
That night, Alexis confessed that she had a crush on her, smiling bashfully yet hardly hiding that seductive look in her emerald eyes under the low light of her fireplace.
“I like you.” She said so casually as everyone around them chattered amongst themselves. There were probably twenty other people there that night, Alexis called it a small house party, and she secretly wished she went there alone. The music was blaring. Her dark eyes widened with shock as she leaned forward.
“What?” She choked into her red cup.
“I said I like you, Tess.” All the brunette could do was blink in shock. The admittedly intimidating woman smiled widely and dropped her head as she laughed, her strawberry bangs covering her eyes.
“You don’t do this often do you?” She chuckled. Tess’s face grew redder than a tomato as she stumbled over her words, trying to regain her composure and save her dignity. “Tess.” Alexis’s green eyes shone with amusement, like a cat that was playing with a mouse, but her tone was serious.
“Yeah?”
“Shut up and kiss me.”
Her tactic seemed to work though, it got her into bed, and it was the start of their relationship.
Three years passed and now Alexis was out every night doing god-knows-what and she was stuck at home cleaning. Her mother would laugh at her, remarking that “she always knew Alexis was the man in the relationship” in her usual spiteful tone before lecturing Tess on how she was right and she needed a real man. Her mother never was too supportive of her or her relationships. Alexis was not the first woman she loved, and - while she was sure they’d be together forever - if it didn’t work out Alexis wouldn’t be the last either. Her mother never seemed to understand that.
Her mother’s opinions were incredibly outdated for the year 2021.
But part of her was growing resentful of her mother’s words, not just because she was not-so-vaguely homophobic, but because she was onto something. Tess stayed home all day and all night, not having to work because Alexis had it all covered somehow, and she cooked and cleaned and took care of everything around the apartment - Alexis’s apartment - while her girlfriend was out all day, sometimes all night too. She never signed up to be a housewife, and while staying home all day was nice at first, she had things she wanted to do and achieve eventually. Not to mention the fact that their relationship was supposed to be built on equality.
Make sure you get under the couches, you always forget under the couches. Her mother’s voice echoed in her head even when she didn’t want it there. Even though she hated to admit it, the disembodied voice of her mom was right, she did almost forget to clean under the couches. She started with the deep magenta one against the wall closest to the entrance, moving it onto the white rug before pausing.
There were magazines and newspapers underneath.
Each one was clearly old, with the edges of their pages bent and creased and frayed. They looked well read, with creases on the spine of each magazine. The images were faded, but she recognized the face on each one. Emerald eyes stared back at her, and the usual mess of curly hair was pulled into two low ponytails, though it was a much darker auburn color than the rosy blonde she usually sported. On her lips was a dark red lipstick, and around her neck was the same choker with the magenta gem in the center…
The title of each magazine was relatively the same, something along the lines of “I secretly dated a serial killer.” There were a few mentions of a man, Charles Lee Ray, a familiar name to anyone who lived in Jersey or Chicago. She looked on with horror but also skepticism. They all looked like tabloid trash, and she was sure her girlfriend couldn’t have been in a magazine from over 30 years ago. She became more concerned about why her girlfriend would photoshop herself into a magazine claiming to be a dead serial killer’s mistress…. but the magazines felt old… too old to be faked.
She pushed a strand of thin, brown hair back behind her ear as her hand shook.
She placed the magazines to the side and looked at the newspaper. In big, bold letters it read:
“ACCOMPLICE TO LAKESHORE STRANGLER ACQUITTED”
with a picture of the same woman walking down the steps to a courthouse. On either side of her were her lawyers and a security guard, and she was dressed like Marissa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny, with a sleek black dress and a baggy leather jacket. She was hiding her face from the people who waited outside, flanking either side of the barricaded steps, flashing cameras and hurling words at her from the looks of it. She seemed to be the same age as Alexis.
The article inside mentioned a slew of things she’d never read up on before. She was familiar with Charles Lee Ray, and the events in 1988, but she’d never heard of Daphne Napier. She supposed if she was acquitted most people didn’t find it interesting enough to talk about her in podcasts or discussions online, and she wasn’t really into true crime so she wouldn’t have known either way, but something about this new story kept her wanting to read more. The article said she claimed she had been in a relationship with his other accomplice, Eddie Caputo when she was only seventeen, and when she realized what exactly her boyfriend was doing she tried to get away. She then claimed the two killers held her hostage for four years, and while she said she never did any of the killing herself, she admitted to being forced to help them get away and clean up their messes.
The images made her sick to her stomach. They were uncannily similar to Alexis in every way, and for some strange reason, deep down she feared the woman she’d come to love was not who she claimed to be. She couldn’t bear to look inside the magazines, wondering just what Daphne might have said to those publishers as opposed to a judge and jury. She supposed it wasn’t good.
The sound of keys jingling in the hallway and the door unlocking startled her.
“Tess? You up? I’m home!” Alexis’s (or could she even call her that anymore?) thick brooklyn accent sounded from the hallway. Tess froze, still holding the newspaper in her hands as large, black boots with pink laces came into view. Her gaze traveled up the length of her fishnet-clad legs and the rest of her body, where she met that same emerald stare from the cover of the magazine. Tess’s eyes filled with tears as Alexis tilted her head like a curious dog.
“What’cha got there?” She asked with no hint of malice or even nervousness. Tess looked down slowly at the paper, then back at her girlfriend. She had no idea why she felt so frightened. She opened her mouth to speak and found it hard to put the words together. At worst, her girlfriend is somehow much older than she looks and claims to be, with a different name and a past filled with serial killers. At best she’s just a true crime nut who has the hots for Charles Lee Ray. She honestly hoped it was the second option, that was much easier to deal with.
Her mouth was dry. “I don’t know what this is” was all she could muster. Alexis took another step forward, looking over Tess’s shoulder with that same look of innocent curiosity. She furrowed her brow.
“That’s me.” She stated simply, as if the very idea that a picture of a woman 30 years ago was actually her wasn’t earth shattering for Tess. The brunette let out a small whine.
“What?” Emerald eyes met her brown ones. Alexis smiled again.
“That’s me. Daphne Napier is me.” She doubled down in a completely serious tone, pointing to the newspaper and magazines. She must have lost it, Tess thought, or maybe I have if I’m starting to believe her.
“Daphne Napier was twenty one when this article was published. You’re almost twenty five.” But you haven’t aged a day since we met. Alexis, or Daphne, smiled to herself, the look of innocence gone. Her smile seemed malicious and bitter. She put her hands on her hips and began to pace the foyer.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.” The way the cherry blonde laughed sent shivers down Tess’s spine. “Look, Tess, there’s a lot that you don’t know about me, there’s a lot I haven’t told you.” She stopped and gestured between the two of them.
“I thought we had something special.” She sounded heartbroken. Tess stood, grabbing Alexis’s (Daphne’s) hands in hers.
“We do!” Tess exclaimed, bringing Alexis’s (Daphne’s) cold fingers to her lips. “We do.” She reassured her, whispering against her flesh. “I just don’t understand.” There was a change in her girlfriend’s eyes, something more sinister replacing the sorrow.
“I really liked you too, I was hoping we could keep doing this for a few more years.” She was laughing but hardly smiling. There was something deep down that told Tess to run - to get out of there before she got hurt. But Alexis would never hurt her… right?
This wasn’t Alexis though, and Tess could never be sure Alexis ever existed. This was Daphne Napier, a woman who was most likely a monster in her own right.
“We can.” She ignored the warning signs, that feeling deep inside, to appease the woman she’d come to love. She hoped there was some truth to the Alexis persona, and she hoped there was something to save here. “I’ll forget I saw it, I promise. Your name is Alexis Quinn.” Tess muttered. She wasn’t sure if she was saying to appease the erratic woman in front of her or if she was trying to convince herself.
Tess could feel her heartbeat in her throat as her stomach turned uneasily. She couldn’t hold Alexis’s emerald gaze any longer. Who are you, Alexis? She thought to herself uneasily. Who am I? What are we doing here?
Her name is Alexis Quinn. Her name is Alexis Quinn. Her name is…
“I’m sorry.” Tess could barely react before something was smashed against her head, and she fell to the floor. Daphne stood over her, watching silently to make sure her (soon to be ex) girlfriend was truly knocked out. She glanced at the old, iron doorstep in her hand and sighed as she dropped it. It collided with the wood floor with a loud THUD!
Blood began to pour from the large gash in the back of the brunette’s head, like the crimson halo of a fallen angel. Daphne sneered at the girl, Fallen’s right, don’t know about any angel though. She knelt down and felt at Tess’s pale-growing-paler-by-the-minute neck, cold fingers searching for a pulse. Weakly, the brunette reached out for her wrist, for comfort from the person she once loved so dearly. Daphne pulled her hand back quickly.
“I hate it when they don’t see it’s over.” She huffed, sadistically mimicking the cadence of a valley girl in a high school drama. “The best exes know when it’s time to move on.” She whispered, her voice shifting to something more soothing as she tauntingly ran her fingers through Tess’s thin strands. Her other hand reached for the doorstep beside her.
“Take a few notes from the other guys and drop dead already.” The iron struck the side of her head quickly and without mercy - the cracking sound her skull made would be sickening to anyone less than a pro, but luckily Daphne was just that.
“Alright, Damballa, this one’s a little early so you gotta work with me, here.” She muttered as she gripped the pink gem on her choker. She swore it glowed ever so softly whenever she did this, though she could never prove it. With one hand raised to the sky, she spoke with conviction.
“Ade due Damballa…”
♛♛♛♛♛♛♛♛
Chicago, Illinois
1988
It was true. Daphne felt sick to her stomach.
Her emerald eyes were locked on the man in front of her; disheveled with stubble along his chin, tousled dark hair, and a brown coat wrapped around his wiry form. The black fingerless gloves on his hands almost completed the look. He looked like a bum.
“You left him there?” Her voice was weak and shaking, hiding the anger and sorrow that lurked beneath her porcelain skin. Dark eyes looked her up and down, which only served to fuel the fire that raged in her gut. She wanted to drive the screwdriver that laid on the dirty, broken counter into his eye. The hideout was a mess, and she assumed it was because neither her nor Tiffany had been around in some time. From what she heard, Chuck seemed to have found someone new.
She would be lying if she said it didn’t hurt.
“I haven’t seen you in god-knows-how-long and this is the first thing you wanna talk about? Anyway, what’s that around your neck? You get into gaudy jewelry lately?” Was all Eddie could muster. Daphne glared at him as she clutched the pink gem on the golden necklace she had bought from some lady. The gem was valuable, the necklace itself… not so much. She would have to make something more suited to her style.
Everything else was the truth, though, he hadn’t seen Daphne since she stopped seeing Chucky. Part of him thought she was dead - thought Tiffany had gotten to her or maybe Charles got bored before…
Either way, Daphne stood before him, dark lines of mascara running down her tear soaked cheeks with smeared lipstick upon her perfect, plump lips. Her dark apparel seemed appropriate - he guessed she saw the news, though she always dressed like that. It was part of the reason Tiff stopped dressing like an uptown brat. Daph’s auburn hair was as fiery as the day she left. Winter fire…
Fire was all she was as she seethed in place, clenching her fists. Large, black boots stomped on the ground, taking Eddie out of his thoughts.
“No. No, you are not changing the subject. You left him there!” She screeched. She was so angry she could tear him apart with her bare hands. She fought the urge to wrap perfectly manicured fingers around his thin neck. “You have - no, had - one job! One fucking job, Eddie!”
“The cops were closing in on us, Daph.” He began, taking that same patronizing tone he used to use when they argued when they were dating. It only made her angrier. Made her heart ache more.
“Oh wait, I forgot, you only care about him, right?” That was the last straw. Her fist pounded on his chest.
“He was our friend you fucking asshole!”
Eddie grabbed her wrists, pulling her even closer. Daphne felt like she could collapse then and there. Her legs felt like jelly, her head heavy and hazy as she tried to focus through the barrage of tears that flooded her eyes. She had never felt so many emotions at once before… it was terrible and smothering. “He was a bit more than a friend to you, though. Isn’t that right, Daph?” She pushed herself away from him and stumbled backwards before collapsing to the ground, heaving.
All she could do was wail, feeling the rawness in her throat and the heaviness in her chest. Every move she made reminded her she was still here, still breathing, still alive.
She was alive, unlike Chucky, and that was what hurt the most. She thought the worst thing he did to her was leave her… she had a whole other thing coming.
“Shut the fuck up.” She muttered through the tears, wiping lamely at her cheeks.
“Tiff put an end to that one, didn’t she?” She bit her tongue at that one, glaring up at the cowardly man in front of her through blazing bangs.
“I didn’t know about that! He insisted they weren’t together anymore, he said she was crazy!”
“He was only half lying, then. What a good guy!” Eddie spouted sarcastically. Daphne rolled her eyes.
“What we had doesn’t erase the fact that I still care…” She trailed off, biting back the tightness in her throat and tears that swelled in her eyes as she realized her mistake. “Cared about him.” She choked.
“I cared about you, Daph.” Eddie crouched down beside her. Daphne scoffed and crossed her arms, scooting away from him ever so slightly as she fought the urge to laugh bitterly in his face. “No, really, I did. I mean, Charles had a point, dating you when I did was bad news but he was only saying that cause he wanted you for himself. I thought you were beautiful, intelligent and so wise beyond your years.”
“C’mon, Eddie, we both know that’s bullshit.” She sniffled, rubbing her slick nose with the sleeve of her magenta cardigan. He knew she was referring to his accusation.
“Is it? He tells me to dump you, and I send you away cause of it. You turn nineteen, start coming back around, and suddenly he’s all over you.” He would be lying if he said he wasn’t still a little bitter.
“I was almost twenty.” Daphne exclaimed with conviction, ever the naive teen he met all those years ago. He rolled his eyes at her. “I didn’t just turn nineteen when I got together with Chuck. Anyway, it’s not like you’re much better.” She got to her feet, towering over the gaunt man in her platform boots.
“Don’t try to take the moral high ground when you dated a goddamn seventeen year old!” She continued, rubbing in the little fact Eddie conveniently left out of his manipulation. Daphne was sixteen when she met Eddie, and she was indeed seventeen when they decided to make things official.
She thought she was so cool back then. Now she knows what happened.
“Jesus…” Eddie muttered as he stood.
“At least Chuck had the decency to know that was fucked up! He respected me.” Daphne crossed her arms and looked away, her eyes focusing on the screwdriver again, if only for a moment. She thought of Chucky in that moment - thought of the way his sky colored eyes seemed to soften at the sight of her, the way he would smile at her and guide her hand while he taught her to slit someone’s throat, the way he corrupted her in the sweetest and most sinful ways and the way he whispered loving words in her ear, holding her closer and closer until…
“He loved me.” She stated in a voice no louder than a whisper, and in her heart she knew it was true.
“You’re fucking delusional.” Eddie spat, throwing his hands up in frustration as he pushed past her. “You sound like Tiff.”
That was the last straw.
Daphne was quick to grab the screwdriver from the counter and plunge it into Eddie’s open palm, ripping through the cheap cotton blend and tearing through his flesh. He pulled away from her grip, her hand still firmly wrapped around the tool as she withdrew it, blood dripping off the rusted metal and onto the dusty floors. Eddie cradled the wounded hand close to his chest, his dark eyes wide and focused on her as he monitored her closely, making sure she wouldn’t drive the rusty tool into his neck next.
“Don’t you ever compare me to her! I’m my own person, Eddie!” Daphne screamed before turning around. She felt the anger bubbling in her chest again, the red that blinded her vision. She could kill him right then and there, and she felt she would be justified.
After all, he did kill her best friend.
(Her best friend who hadn’t spoken to her in a year. Her best friend who basically pumped and dumped the moment things got too complicated for him, regardless of how she felt.)
“I’m not some bumbling, insecure psycho idiot who tries to be someone else when my man loses interest! I at least know when to take the hint and walk away!” Spoken like someone who wasn’t completely and utterly insecure - no, not at all, she thought to herself. Daphne’s feelings toward Tiffany were complicated. She did feel bad about what she inadvertently did to her, yet part of her was still angry at the woman. After all, had she not threatened to kill Daphne, her and Chucky would still be together.
Would being the other woman be enough for her, though? Would she truly be happy with the small stops and little visits that resulted in sex and not much else?
She paced around the kitchen like a caged tiger - unpredictable and dangerous, as usual. Eddie missed when Daph wasn’t so comfortable with killing and maiming.
In many ways Chucky changed her for the worse.
A sudden calmness came over her eyes, practically glazing them over as a smirk made its way to her smudged lips. She dropped the screwdriver.
“Hope you got your tetanus shot, babe, you’re probably gonna need it.” She began as she turned on her heel, leaving Eddie trembling in the corner to watch her slink out the front door.
Along the way, Daphne seemed to miss a little boy walking down the street alone, hugging his Good Guy doll close to his chest.

Hackensack, New Jersey
2023
Daphne was tired. Things were starting to get a bit desperate now that it had been two whole years since she killed Tess.
A soul can only last as long as the amount of time she spends sweetening them up. Unfortunately for her, she was beginning to run out of time with no one new lined up to take Tess’s place. Sure, a one night stand here and there could give her a few more days, but the amount of people she would have to sleep with in order to stay young for another year while she lines up the next poor sucker would be too damn many.
The amulet of eternal life was complicated like that - it needed a soul to sustain a soul.
God, it made her sound like a vampire.
Spiritual vampire, she used to muse cheerfully to herself as she would consider taking another life for her own. The souls would keep her young forever, or at least that’s what she thought. It took only a few more wrinkles near her eyes for her to figure out she needed a connection with the souls the amulet collected.
Now she was a fucking black widow.
She was grateful for a few of her exes, though, like the older rich man Boris. He’s the reason she didn’t have to work anymore, and the reason she was living in the apartment she was. Once she got rid of his brats, and sweet talked him into putting her into the will, she killed him. Best three years of her life, though. The gowns and gifts were to die for!
But Tess was different.
Daphne hadn’t felt so alive in a long time. In a lot of ways, Tess seemed to fill the hole Chucky had left over thirty years prior. She was wonderful and kept her on her toes, even if it wasn’t in the usual exciting way Chucky used to. She managed to make Daphne laugh, made her appreciate life again…
And she supposed that was why she struggled to find a new victim. No one was Tess… or Chucky for that matter.
Her apartment was dark and empty, with no one around to liven the place up. Daphne was out all day and night searching for someone… someone to love, someone to hold, someone to consume into her own being when the time was right.
God I hate dating! She thought frustratedly as she slid down the surface of her front door.
Then, in the darkness, she heard something drop. It sounded like one of her books, but she couldn’t be sure. She pressed her lips into a thin line and straightened up, feeling irritation and anger in her core. Oh, whoever decided to try and rob me tonight is in for a bad fucking time. She thought bitterly. To her right was the iron doorstep, the same one she used to kill Tess, and though its metal handle burned her skin with the thought of what she did with it, she still crouched down to collect it.
Its weight reminded her of her sins, but it excited her all the same.
Daphne cautiously moved into the living room, where the blaze of a small fire illuminated the area and she saw the silhouette of what looked like a child sitting in her armchair. Confused as to how she missed the light from the front door and why a child would even be in her apartment, she wavered in her stance, lowering the iron.
The tableside lamp clicked on, and before her sat an aging Good Guy doll.
Red hair tousled and ragged, with smile lines around his thin lips and bags under sky blue eyes that used to stare at her lovingly, Daphne knew exactly who this was.
“Hiya doll.” Chucky greeted in his usual raspy, sarcastic tone. “It’s been a while.”

Cassidy sighs, then looks at Alphonse, Seth, and Bella. "So what's the history of this place, Seth?" Seth looks up at the house in front of them. ”The Gotthaus Manor... well, from what I know, the man who built it was a real bastard. He went mad and killed his whole family and himself. After he died, the place was condemned and abandoned. It’s been sitting here rotting for decades.” Bella grimaces at hearing that. ”Are you sure we shouldn’t be doing this somewhere else?” Alphonse laughs. ”Ghosts aren’t real, I keep telling you.” Cassidy smirks and holds the duffel bag of gear as she walks to the front door. Bella follows behind, obviously a bit nervous about being here. The house, despite being abandoned for so long, has an ornate front door. The brass door handle and door knocker are tarnished and rusty, but the door is otherwise in good condition. Alphonse just laughs again. ”I swear you guys are such babies. Come on, let’s just go in.” Seth steps in, and the others follow him in. The inside of the manor has decayed quite a bit, but it’s obvious that this place used to be a beautiful home. The walls are made of dark oak in the foyer, with dark red carpeting on the floor. The group looks around, awed at the size inside and how nice it used to be. Cassidy walks past a staircase into a hallway, the flooring of which is hardwood paneling. Further down, past some doors, you can see the large dining room. There’s also a door to what seems to be the laundry room closer to the front of the house. Bella follows beside Cassidy, obviously nervous. ”Don’t you like... feel a weird vibe or something?” Cassidy looks at her and nods, holding the Alice Box. Bella visibly shivers as she looks around. “This place is giving me the creeps. I hate it. Let’s not be in here too long.” Alphonse, who had been further ahead, laughs and looks back at Bella and Cassidy. “You guys are so lame, seriously. There’s no such thing as ghosts.” Suddenly, the Alice Box chimes as a word appears. Bella jumps at the chiming and backs up when the word appears. “What’s that?” Seth moves over to try and see what it says. "Murder," Cassidy said aloud. Alphonse just scoffs. “Pfft. No, duh, some guy killed his whole family here. It’s probably talking about that.” Bella shudders and moves closer to Cassidy. The Alice Box chimes again. Bella squeaks as it chimes and grabs hold of Cassidy’s arm as the word appears. “What does it say now?” "Alice," Cassidy says softly. Alphonse just rolls his eyes. “Alice probably just used to live here or something. Maybe it was her old room. Come on, can we do something that’s actually scary?” Bella continues to hold tight to Cassidy’s arm, while Seth just seems worried.

Get FAMILIAR WITH OAK FLOORING
For many years, oak has been favoured for flooring because of its durability, beauty, and versatility. You may improve the beauty of your home and add value by installing high-quality oak hardwood flooring. However, there are certain drawbacks to this material, as there are to any construction materials. Here are some of the most notable benefits and drawbacks of oak hardwood flooring.
Oak is a luxurious material, therefore a property with an oak floor will be more appealing to potential buyers. To buy wood flooring follow the link.
Oak has a natural elegance that can be used into a variety of home design styles. White oak does not absorb liquid, making it suitable for any areas that tend to leak liquid, and oak floors are resistant to wear and tear, fungus and insects, cracking. If you give your floors a high-quality finish, they will endure for decades. Maintenance: Regular sweeping and an occasional mopping with an oak-specific cleaning reagent will keep the floor looking great for years to come. Oak is unique among natural building materials in that wood is resistant to insect assaults and may be treated to withstand the moisture that comes from seasonal changes.
Oak hardwood floors may discolour if exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time. If your oak floor isn't sufficiently protected, sharp and heavy objects may quickly damage it. The longer a spill lies on the floor, the deeper it will seep into the wood, making removal of the stain more difficult.
Common Oak Flooring Varieties and Their Comparison Solid oak, engineered oak, and oak laminate are the three most prevalent kinds of oak flooring available. There are benefits and cons to each option. Here is a comparison that should help us choose the best kind for our needs.
Advantages Drawbacks One-Piece Solid Oak means that the oak used came from a single log. Superior longevity and accessibility. Strong organic substance. Size is restricted in both dimensions. - The ability to shrink in cold temperatures and swell in warm ones. Composite Oak Slightly less expensive than solid wood; constructed with a top layer of genuine oak wood and three or four layers of syntactic support. Thus, adaptable to a range of sizes. - Immune to temperature changes. Not as long-lasting as real oak. Oak laminate flooring is available in a wide variety of hues and designs. – Save half the price of solid wood while adding colour and character to your home. Not simple to fix. Not repairable in any way. Unnatural footfall noise and tactile sensation. In addition to reading about the differences between these oak flooring options in the abstract, let's also take in some beautiful examples of each to use as inspiration for our own interior design.
REAL OAK Solid wood is a natural, durable material that can be refinished by sanding and applying a protective finish. Its longevity suggests it might last for quite some time. Flooring manufactured from a single plank of oak is called "solid oak," and it is often placed by driving nails through the tongue at an angle into the subfloor and the floor board.
CONTRIBUTED OAK Engineered oak flooring is built of oak, but in a more compressed form. Not as durable as solid wood, but still potentially good for 15–25 years of use. Engineered oak flooring is constructed with an oak veneer glued to many layers of softwood for strength and stability. Tongue-and-groove and "click" flooring, in which the individual planks of flooring interlock with one another, are only two of the edge profiles available for engineered oak flooring. You may attach or staple engineered oak flooring to the subfloor, or you can install it as a floating floor above the subfloor with certain products.
LAMINATED OAK Due to its realistic wood grain and deep hue, oak laminate is a popular choice among homeowners. Laminate oak flooring is an affordable alternative to solid or engineered oak floors while yet providing the same attractive appearance and strong, durable surface.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM LAMINATE OAK Vs. ENGINEERED OAK FLOORING What are the key distinctions between engineered oak flooring and laminated oak flooring? Wood floor providers often have hundreds of different flooring varieties, each with its own label and corresponding sample. The thickness of the top or exposed wood layer is the key to answering this issue. Take a look at the data in the table below.
Oak Engineered Laminate with a Solid Wood Top LayerUsually at least 1/8 inches thick.1/16 of an inch, at most. Refinishing PotentialUsually sands well enough to be refinished at least once. The thin veneer on top makes it impractical.

Why Choose Engineered Wood Flooring for Your Home?
Choosing the right flooring for your home can be a daunting task, with countless materials and styles available on the market. Engineered wood flooring has become a popular option for homeowners looking for the timeless appeal of hardwood, but with additional durability and versatility. Combining the beauty of natural wood with the resilience of modern engineering, this type of flooring offers a wide range of benefits that make it suitable for nearly any room in the house. In this article, we’ll explore why engineered wood flooring might be the perfect fit for your home, covering its key features, installation methods, and long-term advantages.
What is Engineered Wood Flooring?
Engineered wood flooring is a type of hardwood flooring that consists of multiple layers of wood, rather than a single solid piece. The top layer, known as the wear layer, is made of real hardwood, providing the authentic appearance and texture of solid wood. Below this wear layer, multiple layers of plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF) are stacked in a cross-grain configuration. This layered construction increases the floor’s stability, making it more resistant to changes in temperature and humidity compared to solid wood.
The beauty of engineered wood flooring is that it offers the same rich and elegant look as traditional hardwood, but with improved durability and performance. The wear layer can come in a variety of wood species, including oak, maple, walnut, and cherry, allowing homeowners to match their flooring with any design style. The thickness of the wear layer varies by product, and thicker layers can even be sanded and refinished multiple times, extending the floor’s lifespan.
Overall, engineered wood flooring offers a combination of aesthetic appeal and practical benefits that make it a popular choice for modern homes. Its versatility and ease of installation make it a viable option for a range of spaces, from living rooms to basements.
How is Engineered Wood Different from Solid Wood Flooring?
While both engineered wood and solid wood flooring have a similar appearance, they are constructed in very different ways. Solid wood flooring is made from a single piece of wood, which gives it a classic, timeless look but also makes it more susceptible to environmental changes. Solid wood expands and contracts with fluctuations in humidity and temperature, making it more prone to warping, especially in areas like basements or humid climates.
In contrast, engineered wood is designed to counteract these issues. Its multi-layered construction provides more dimensional stability, meaning it is less likely to warp, shrink, or expand. This makes engineered wood ideal for areas that experience temperature or moisture changes, such as kitchens or bathrooms, where solid wood would be a risky choice.
Another key difference is installation flexibility. Solid wood floors typically need to be nailed or glued down, whereas engineered wood can be installed in various ways, including floating installations, making it easier and quicker to install. Engineered wood is also compatible with underfloor heating systems, which is not the case for most solid wood floors. While solid wood can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifespan, engineered wood can also be refinished, depending on the thickness of its wear layer, but usually not as often.
The Key Benefits of Engineered Wood Flooring
Engineered wood flooring offers several benefits that make it an attractive choice for homeowners. One of its most significant advantages is its stability. Thanks to its multi-layered construction, engineered wood is less susceptible to warping and movement caused by temperature and humidity fluctuations. This makes it suitable for installation in areas where solid wood flooring would struggle, such as basements or rooms with radiant heating systems.
Another key benefit is its aesthetic versatility. With a wide range of species, finishes, and styles available, engineered wood can closely mimic the look of solid hardwood flooring while offering a broader selection of design options. Homeowners can choose from various plank widths, colors, and textures to match their interior decor.
Durability is another strong point for engineered wood. The wear layer of engineered wood is made from real hardwood, providing the same resistance to scratches and dents as solid wood. Thicker wear layers allow for refinishing, which can extend the floor’s lifespan by many years.
Lastly, engineered wood is easier to install compared to solid wood, with several installation options including floating, glue-down, and nail-down methods. Its versatility, stability, and aesthetic appeal make it an excellent flooring solution for virtually any room in your home.
Durability and Longevity of Engineered Wood
One of the standout features of engineered wood flooring is its durability. Unlike solid wood, which can be sensitive to environmental conditions, engineered wood’s layered construction offers increased resistance to the effects of humidity and temperature changes. This makes it less prone to issues like warping or shrinking over time, particularly in areas where moisture levels fluctuate, such as bathrooms or basements.
The lifespan of engineered wood largely depends on the thickness of its wear layer. Thicker wear layers, typically 3-6 mm, can be sanded and refinished multiple times, much like solid hardwood, extending the floor’s longevity to 20-30 years or more. Even engineered wood with a thinner wear layer can last over a decade with proper care.
In addition to resisting moisture, engineered wood is tough enough to withstand daily wear and tear. Its durability makes it a great option for high-traffic areas like hallways and living rooms. While scratches and dents are possible, especially with softer wood species, these imperfections can often be minimized with routine maintenance or refinishing.
For households with pets, children, or heavy furniture, engineered wood offers a resilient and long-lasting flooring solution. Its durability, combined with its timeless aesthetic, ensures that it remains a smart investment for years to come.
Installation Methods for Engineered Wood Flooring
Engineered wood flooring is prized for its ease of installation, with several methods available depending on the homeowner's preference and the condition of the subfloor. The three most common installation methods are floating, glue-down, and nail-down.
The floating method involves laying the engineered wood planks over an underlayment without adhering them directly to the subfloor. The planks are connected via a tongue-and-groove system or a click-lock mechanism. This method is often the simplest and most cost-effective, making it popular for DIY installations. Floating floors are also ideal for areas with radiant heating systems, as the lack of adhesives allows the floor to expand and contract freely.
Glue-down installation involves applying adhesive to the subfloor before laying the engineered wood planks on top. This method provides a more secure and permanent installation, making it well-suited for high-traffic areas. However, it requires more skill and preparation, as the subfloor must be clean, dry, and level to ensure a smooth installation.
The nail-down method is similar to the installation of solid hardwood floors, where the planks are secured to the subfloor with nails or staples. This method is typically used for installations over wooden subfloors and provides a very stable, long-lasting floor. Although more labor-intensive, this method ensures that the engineered wood remains securely in place for decades.
Conclusion
Engineered wood flooring is a versatile, stylish, and practical choice for homeowners looking for the beauty of hardwood without the drawbacks of solid wood. With its superior resistance to environmental changes, easy installation methods, and wide range of design options, engineered wood offers the perfect balance of form and function. Whether you’re upgrading your living room, renovating a basement, or installing new floors in a high-traffic area, engineered wood flooring provides a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution for any space.

Top Trends in Home Surface Makeovers for 2025
As we look ahead to 2025, homeowners are embracing new ideas for their interior spaces. Home surface makeovers are no longer just about replacing old materials; they focus on creating functional, stylish, and sustainable environments. Whether it’s flooring, walls, or countertops, there are fresh trends making waves in 2025 that promise to enhance your home’s aesthetic and performance. In this article, we’ll dive into some of the top trends in home surface makeovers for the year, helping you stay ahead of the curve when planning your next home project.
Tumblr media
Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Materials
One of the most significant trends for 2025 is the rise of sustainable materials. Homeowners are increasingly seeking eco-friendly alternatives that reduce environmental impact without compromising on style. Materials such as bamboo, cork, and reclaimed wood are gaining popularity for their renewable nature and durability. These options allow you to create beautiful surfaces that are both stylish and environmentally responsible.
Recycled materials are also making their way into home surface design. Glass tiles, recycled wood flooring, and eco-friendly paints are becoming go-to choices for those wanting to update their home with a greener approach. Not only do these materials help reduce waste, but they also offer unique textures and appearances that traditional materials can’t match.
Sleek, Modern Concrete Finishes
Concrete is making a huge comeback in 2025, not just for industrial spaces but in homes too. Homeowners are embracing polished concrete as a versatile and low-maintenance option for floors, walls, and countertops. It’s especially popular in modern and minimalist designs because of its sleek, clean look. Concrete can be customized with different finishes, textures, and even colors, offering flexibility for various interior styles.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, concrete is a durable material that can handle heavy foot traffic and resist staining. This makes it an excellent choice for both residential and commercial spaces. If you're looking to create an urban, industrial look or simply want a low-maintenance option that can last for years, concrete finishes are a top choice.
Warm, Natural Wood Tones
In 2025, natural wood tones are taking center stage in home surface design. While lighter woods like oak and maple are still popular, richer, warmer tones like walnut and mahogany are becoming increasingly sought after. These deeper shades create a cozy, inviting atmosphere and pair well with a variety of other materials and design styles.
The versatility of wood is unmatched. It can be used for flooring, cabinetry, accent walls, and even ceilings. Additionally, wood offers excellent insulation properties and adds an organic element to the home that complements other natural materials like stone and leather. As we move into 2025, expect to see wood surfaces used more creatively in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Textured Wall Finishes
Textured walls are becoming more popular in 2025 as homeowners move away from flat, painted surfaces. Techniques like Venetian plaster, limewash, and textured wallpapers are being used to add depth and interest to walls. These materials not only bring a tactile quality to the space but also help with acoustics, making them a great choice for living rooms, home theaters, and offices.
Textured wall finishes are also a great way to add a personal touch to your home. Whether you're looking for a rustic, matte look or something more refined and polished, textured surfaces can be customized to suit your taste. This trend is perfect for creating statement walls that enhance the character of any room.
Luxury Vinyl and Hybrid Flooring
While hardwood and tile will always be in demand, luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) and hybrid flooring options are increasingly popular for 2025. These materials offer the look of real wood or stone but with better durability, water resistance, and cost-effectiveness. LVF is a great option for bathrooms, kitchens, and basements, where moisture is a concern.
In addition, hybrid flooring combines the benefits of vinyl and laminate, providing even more durability and ease of maintenance. It’s also available in a wide range of designs, from wood and stone lookalikes to more creative patterns. This flexibility, along with its affordability, makes it an ideal choice for many homeowners looking to refresh their floors.
Statement Flooring Choices
Bold and unique flooring choices are another trend we’re seeing in 2025. Homeowners are moving away from neutral and basic flooring options and opting for more expressive designs. Geometric patterns, brightly colored tiles, and even custom-made rugs are becoming popular in kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms. Statement floors are a great way to add personality and create focal points in any space.
Whether you opt for a striking tile design in the bathroom or a bold rug in the living room, statement flooring adds vibrancy and style to your home. It allows you to experiment with colors and patterns that reflect your personality and set your home apart from the crowd.
Smart Surfaces and Technology Integration
In 2025, technology continues to merge with interior design, especially in surface materials. Smart surfaces, such as countertops with integrated lighting or touch-controlled surfaces, are making their way into modern homes. These surfaces are not only functional but can also enhance the overall experience in your home.
For example, smart countertops with built-in charging stations or interactive displays are becoming more common in kitchens and offices. These surfaces are designed to make your life easier while maintaining a sleek and modern look. As technology advances, more innovative materials and surfaces will be introduced, allowing for even greater customization and convenience in your home.
Tumblr media
Professional Installation for a Flawless Finish
Choosing the right material for your surfaces is just one part of the equation. Proper installation is key to ensuring that your surfaces perform well and look great for years to come. Whether you’re updating your flooring, installing a textured wall finish, or adding luxury vinyl, working with a professional flooring contractor can help you achieve the best results.
A skilled contractor will ensure that materials are installed properly, minimizing any issues that might arise in the future. For example, when opting for floor carpet installation, a professional can guarantee that your carpet is laid evenly, avoiding wrinkles or damage. This can help extend the life of your new floors and keep them looking pristine for years.
Conclusion
As we move into 2025, home surface makeovers are all about blending style, functionality, and sustainability. Whether you’re upgrading your flooring, walls, or countertops, the trends this year offer a wide range of options to suit any taste and lifestyle. From eco-friendly materials to bold flooring designs and smart surfaces, there’s never been a better time to refresh your home.
If you’re in Buffalo, NY, or the surrounding areas, ProShield Concrete Coatings is the best company to assist with your home surface makeover. Their expertise in concrete coatings, flooring installations, and more ensures that your home will look beautiful and perform flawlessly for years to come. Whether you’re interested in a sleek concrete finish or floor carpet installation, their professional team will provide exceptional service and results.

For years, hardwood floors have been synonymous with elegance and sophistication, but engineered hardwood floor bring an innovative twist that takes this classic option to the next level. Here’s why engineered hardwood is a game changer for quality floors.
Tumblr media
What is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?
Engineered hardwood is a type of flooring made from real wood, but with a twist. Unlike traditional solid hardwood, which is made from a single piece of wood, engineered hardwood consists of multiple layers. The top layer, also known as the veneer, is real hardwood, while the inner layers are crafted from plywood or other materials. This construction makes engineered hardwood both sturdy and flexible, able to withstand various environmental conditions where traditional hardwood might falter.
Durability and Stability
One of the biggest advantages of engineered hardwood over solid wood is its ability to resist warping, shrinking, or expanding due to changes in humidity and temperature. In regions with high moisture levels or homes with fluctuating temperatures, engineered hardwood performs exceptionally well. The layered construction prevents the floor from bowing or cracking, ensuring your floors look great for many years to come.
Aesthetic Appeal
The top veneer layer of engineered hardwood is made from the same high-quality wood as traditional hardwood, offering the same stunning appearance. Whether you choose oak, maple, cherry, or walnut, engineered hardwood offers a rich, natural look that adds warmth and elegance to any space. Its versatility in design allows you to achieve the classic hardwood aesthetic with less maintenance and care required than solid wood.
Cost-Effective
While engineered hardwood offers many of the same aesthetic and functional benefits as traditional hardwood, it typically comes at a lower price point. The manufacturing process of engineered hardwood is more efficient, and since it uses less high-quality wood in its construction, it costs less per square foot. This makes it an attractive option for homeowners and businesses looking for the beauty of hardwood floors without the premium price tag.
Installation Flexibility
Engineered hardwood is easier to install than solid hardwood. It can be installed using several methods, including nail-down, glue-down, or even floating installations. Many engineered hardwood products come with a click-lock system, which makes installation even quicker and easier, with no glue or nails required. This can save both time and money during the installation process.
Environmentally Friendly
Since engineered hardwood uses fewer natural resources and can often be made from sustainably sourced wood, it tends to be a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional solid hardwood. If you’re looking to reduce your ecological footprint while still enjoying the elegance of wood floors, engineered hardwood offers a responsible solution.
Easy Maintenance
Another perk of engineered hardwood is its low maintenance requirements. While solid hardwood floors often need periodic refinishing to maintain their beauty, engineered hardwood requires far less upkeep. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping are all that’s needed to keep your engineered hardwood floors looking pristine for years.
Resale Value
Like traditional hardwood floors, engineered hardwood adds significant value to your home or business. Its stylish appearance and long-lasting durability can help increase your property’s appeal, especially to prospective buyers who value quality flooring. Whether you plan to sell soon or simply want to enhance the longevity of your home, engineered hardwood is an investment that pays off.
Conclusion
Engineered hardwood has truly revolutionized the world of flooring. With its combination of durability, aesthetic appeal, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits, it’s clear why engineered hardwood is considered a game changer in flooring options. If you’re looking for a flooring solution that offers both quality and longevity, consider engineered hardwood for your next renovation or construction project.
