HomeAdvisor’s 2019 Report Reveals Popular Spending Trends
The new State of Home Spending report by HomeAdvisor provides a treasure trove of information regarding the habits and behaviors of homeowners relating to home improvement spending, home maintenance spending, and home emergency spending.
Misha Fisher, Chief Economist for ANGI Homeservices (which owns HomeAdvisor), provides insight on the report.
Improving and remodeling are more popular than upkeep projects. Image: Breadmaker/Shutterstock
Homeowners spend more on home improvement than home maintenance
When taking out their wallets, homeowners are more likely to spend money to improve their space, rather than tackle a maintenance project. “For every dollar they spend on home maintenance, homeowners spend an average of five dollars on home improvement projects,” Fisher says.
In 2018, homeowners spent an average of $7,560 on home improvement projects. “They spent an average of $1,105 on home maintenance projects, and $416 on home emergency projects,” according to Fisher.
Some states spend significantly more on projects. Image: Breadmaker/Shutterstock
States spending the most and least on home improvement
Residents in Massachusetts, Hawaii, Rhode Island and Maryland are among the states that spend the most on home improvement projects. “On the other hand, West Virginia, Wyoming, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Maine are some of the states that spend the least amount on home improvement,” Fisher says.
Home improvement spending is up by 17.5% from 2018. Fisher attributes some of this to an increase in consumer wages, and a cultural focus on design aesthetics. “Also, the cost of skilled tradespeople is rising, and there are better (but more expensive) home improvement tools,” he says.
Everyone wants a renovated bathroom. Image: plusONE/Shutterstock
What are homeowners improving?
Rooms are the most popular home improvement choice. “Among these remodeling projects, bathrooms remain the overwhelmingly popular choice across all generations, likely in part because of their comparatively cheaper cost relative to kitchens,” according to Fisher. Many homeowners are incorporating 2019 bathroom technology trends. “A bathroom renovation usually costs $10,352, and most homeowners spend between $5,957 and $14,832.” While a small or medium-sized bathroom ranges between $3,500 and $7,000, he says that a master or large bathroom could cost more than $13,000 to remodel.
Besides remodeling rooms, other popular projects include installing new appliances, replacing the roof, and refinishing hardwood floors.
Replacing windows can increase energy efficiency. Image: onzon/Shutterstock
Motivation to complete projects
Among generations, millennials are more likely to complete a home project to increase the home’s resale value. “Also, while baby boomers and Gen X are more likely to want to ‘modernize” their homes, millennials and the Silent Generation say they want to improve aesthetics and design,” Fisher explains.
When homeowners turn their attention to fixing parts of the home, they’re replacing or repairing areas that are damaged, decaying, or defective. Fisher says they’re most likely to focus on the following projects: a new roof, a new HVAC, new fencing, building a deck, new gutters, replacing windows, and new siding.
Roof repair is one common emergency home project. Image: Radovan1/Shutterstock
Emergency home projects
One out of every five homeowners reported the need to complete an emergency home project. Examples of home emergency projects include fixing hail damage to the roof or replacing a failing hot water heater. “Homeowners who live in areas prone to extreme weather events spend the most money on emergency projects,” Fisher says. Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana lead in this area, as a result of tropical storms, thunderstorms, flooding and hail.
However, you might be surprised to find out that an older home doesn’t necessary mean you’ll spend more in the event of an emergency. “The owners of a 100-year-old home spend an average of $370 less on emergency home repairs than the owner of a brand-new home,” Fisher says.
Millennials and more likely to conduct research via the internet. Image: one photo/Shutterstock
How homeowners research costs
When researching home improvement costs, there are stark generational differences. For example:
Millennials: 77% use the internet, 64% check big box stores, 30% ask a previously used contractor
GenX: 74% check big box stores, 70% use the internet, 23% ask a previously used contractor
Baby Boomers: 60% check big box store, 58% use the internet, 35% ask a previously used contractor
The Silent Generation: 50% check big box stores, 32% ask a previously used contractor, and 25% use the internet

The Kitchen Just Isn’t Right Anymore
Luke knows what it means when Leia looks like this.
She’s crossing her arms and tapping her foot with a look of deep concentration on her face. Not only that but she’s been doing it in the kitchen for the past 10 minutes. It can only mean one thing: she’s remodeling the kitchen in her mind.
As she turns around to look at some other part of the kitchen she finally notices Luke standing there. “Honey,” she begins, “the kitchen just isn’t…right, anymore. It looks outdated, especially when you compare it to our friends’ kitchens. We need to remodel it, or at least one or two areas.”
Luke knows they’ll end up having to contact this contractor they use whenever they want work on their house done. But hey, as long as Leia’s happy, he’s happy. “What do you think needs to be done, hon,” he rhymes.
Luke knows what it means when Leia looks like this.

Luke knows they’ll end up having to call this contractor they use whenever they want work on their house done. But hey, as long as Leia’s happy, he’s happy. “What do you think needs to be done, hon,” he rhymes.
1. Remodeling The Kitchen Cabinets
“The one area we’re definitely remodeling in the kitchen is the cabinets,” Leia begins.
Your kitchen cabinets take up the most room, as they do for almost every kitchen (can you imagine one where they don’t?) This means they are the first part people see and what they see the most.
As far as remodeling goes, you can paint them a different color:
.fusion-gallery-1 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;}
Or completely change the style and look:
.fusion-gallery-2 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;}
New cabinets can transform the look of a kitchen by themselves, which is why Leia is so deadset on remodeling the kitchen cabinets. Luke agrees with this, but he wants to know what else Leia would do to their kitchen.
2. Installing New Flooring
“We definitely need to install new flooring as part of this kitchen remodel.”
The flooring also takes up a lot of space in the kitchen plus it’s what you’ll be standing on when cooking or socializing. “Socializing?” Luke says questioningly.
“Yes, kitchens are becoming one of the places to gather in the house. For the family, it’s where the food is so people tend to meet up there quite often and friends like to hang out with the chef.” Luke had no idea kitchens were so popular, which is why he lets Leia handle the home remodeling ideas and such.
.fusion-gallery-3 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;}
Porcelain tiles and hardwood flooring are popular choices for kitchens. They’re not the most expensive product, they can last for a long time, and they never go out of style.
“Well after that we’ve basically got ourselves a brand new kitchen,” Luke says cheerily. “But we aren’t finished yet,” Leia replies.
3. Painting The Ceiling And Walls To Remodel A Kitchen
“Changing the colors of the walls and ceilings, or at least refreshing them, would be a nice change too.”
.fusion-gallery-4 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;}
Walls and especially ceilings need a type of paint that can stand up to heat and moisture, otherwise it’ll fade and crack more quickly. Whites, grays, and blues are popular kitchen colors in this area.
But the one walled part of a kitchen that needs something different than a paint job is the backsplash.
4. Updating The Backsplash
“What makes the kitchen backsplash so important?” Luke asks.
The backsplash needs to match with the cabinets and the counters or the whole look of the kitchen can be thrown off. It also needs to be easy to clean and hard to damage as a lot of steam and food can get on them.
Though it may not be the biggest part of the kitchen it certainly helps bridge the gap between the cabinets and the counters:
.fusion-gallery-5 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;}
Leia has seen a few kitchen backsplash ideas but she knows there’s more options than just those. But she wants the next kitchen remodeling idea more than a new backsplash.
5. Remodel A Kitchen By Putting In An Island
“Putting in a kitchen island would make everything better,” Leia says dreamily. “Why?”
.fusion-gallery-6 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;}
Kitchen islands provide more counter space. You can use it for:
Preparing food on
Extra space for people to eat
Buffet-style meals
Watching the kids do homework while you cook
A place to gather around
Overall it’s a kitchen addition that brings many additional benefits with it. “The same thing can be said with the other main way to remodel a kitchen,” Leia finishes. “Just one more way?” Luke asks. “That and I guess a half remodel idea,” she finishes.
6. Recessed Lighting Changes How You See
“The one thing you really want in your kitchen is to be able to see,” Leia says mysteriously.
Recessed lights in the ceiling can provide an even amount of light across the kitchen. This makes it stand out more and helps you see while cooking. The same goes for hanging lights and lights underneath the cabinets:
.fusion-gallery-7 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;}
Being able to see the food and what you’re putting in it can help it to turn out better. You don’t want to accidentally oversalt something or serve something undercooked because you couldn’t see well enough!
“Yeah but you already cook so well,” Luke says smoothly. Leia smiles and gives him a little shrug. “I can make even better food if we do the half remodel that I want,” she replies.
6.5 New Appliances Are Always Nice
“Brand new appliances will step up my cooking game!”
.fusion-gallery-8 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;}
“Well I can see why you only call it a half when it comes to a kitchen remodel,” Luke says. “New appliances are better at cooking food and can do even more than older models. It’s not really a remodel, more like an addition, but that’s why it’s only a half.”
Where Will Start With Your Kitchen Remodel?
“So, how many of your ideas are we actually going to do?” Luke questions. Leia says that they can start with the cabinets and go from there depending on their budget and the total cost. The first thing they need to do is plan out the budget and find some kitchen remodeling ideas.

Mel Feller And Only Life Skills Only Grandpas Can Teach by Mel Feller
Mel Feller And Only Life Skills Only Grandpas Can Teach by Mel Feller
Mel Feller knows and has personally felt as warm and wonderful memories of grandmothers and how those memories revolve around their hugs and affection, recollections of grandpas often center on special outings and activities and the values imparted along the way.
Mel Feller has a strong belief that today’s generation may be missing some basic life skills as harried parents rush to fill kids’ free time with organized activities. Grandfathers can seize the opportunity to step in and pass on some vanishing practical skills to their grandchildren. You will model important values and create lasting memories, and what could be more important than that?
Family Fishing
Nothing embodies special times with grandpa better than a day of fishing, which involves the type of quiet and peaceful moments many kids today simply do not get enough of. For suggestions on the best equipment and techniques for junior fishers, visit the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation. When you and your companions are ready, start off fishing for bluegill, catfish, bass, or trout in a pond or lake on a summer morning. Then graduate to saltwater fishing, first from the surf or a pier, then onto a deep-sea party boat or even a private charter. When the kids reach an appropriate age, give them a copy of Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” to read and discuss on a future outing when the fish are not biting.
Values modeled: Practicing catch-and-release teaches kids the sanctity of life; cooking your catch illustrates the circle of life.
Auto Mechanics
Today’s automobiles may be full of computer chips, but the underlying technology — for better or worse — remains largely unchanged from earlier models. You do not need to be a mechanical genius to be able to familiarize grandchildren with the basic workings of a car. Start by showing kids how to make an oil change or degrease a motor, all the while explaining how an internal-combustion engine works. While rotating tires, point out the brake assembly and how it operates. You can also show kids how to access parts that require routine maintenance, such as belts and air and fuel filters. In addition, do not forget to show them how to use a jack and change a tire.
Values modeled Independence and self-sufficiency. The kids will be eternally grateful if your lessons keep them from turning their car over to a mechanic every time a dashboard warning flashes and help them avoid the financial costs of automotive ignorance.
Wilderness Skills
You do not need to take grandchildren into the Rockies to teach them survival skills. Even if you are not an outdoors enthusiast, taking your grandchildren camping in a national or state park will give those cherished memories and potentially life-saving skills. Start with lessons in campfire building and tent making. To show kids what to eat in the woods, stay near areas where you can forage for wild fruits and berries or track small game. Schedule overnights in different seasons to teach them how to protect themselves from the elements year-round. In addition, always remind kids of critical safety tips.
Values modeled: Appreciation and respect for nature can round out video-game-obsessed children. Quiet time outdoors can stimulate soulful reflection they will never find in front of a screen.
Carpentry Lessons
At minimum, teaching boys and girls basic carpentry skills will make them comfortable with tools, but hopefully it will also give them the confidence one day to tackle all manner of home projects on their own from fixing a leaky faucet or toilet to installing hardwood floors potentially saving tens of thousands of dollars in contractor fees. If your grandchildren’s home, or yours, has a suitable backyard, start by helping the kids build a fort, however modest or grand. This Old House has ideas to get you started. The structure could serve as their first outpost away from the nest, and a monument to a sage grandfather’s guidance until that bittersweet day they outgrow it.
Values modeled: The ability to repair and reuse things are critical and more valuable than ever at a time when fewer and fewer people are able to build things by hand. These lessons can help foster the self-reliance that great Americans like Thomas Paine and Ralph Waldo Emerson once celebrated.
Mel Feller is one the most experienced coaches for Small Business Owners or Startups, Real Estate, Internet, Business Consultant, Investor, Speaker, Author, Grants with over 35 years and over 51,000 plus individual coaching sessions during that time. You can see why many of my clients have endorsed their results and me.
Mel Feller is wonderful in getting to know his subject and often pulls his clients into uncharted territories. His powerful intuition blended with his ability to shift perspective allows others to successfully construct and bring their ideas to light.
Mel Feller has designed a coaching program that begins with establishing a foundation for each client in clarifying personal and professional values as well as creating a long-term vision. He combines this insight with his client’s natural talents and learned skills to create a purpose/mission statement that they can use as a filter for their decision-making.
Nevertheless, no matter whom Mel Feller is with he still likes to add value to people’s lives. He even loves adding value to the lives of his grandkids.
