Since you're Australian, why are so many of the posts from the US? Did you start with Australia and then move onto other countries once you'd felt like you exhausted it? Or is the US particularly interesting for your purposes?
A big part of the reason is the enormous difference in scale. Australia has about 25 million people, versus 300 or so million in the US. Each of the 50 states has at least one or two major cities, most have many more than that. In addition to the volume of real estate imagery produced by this market, there are a few things about the US in this context which draw me in from an Australian perspective. One is how real estate listings weirdly embody how much more visually apparent the harmful economic forces of the past 50 years are in American society than they are here or elsewhere. Australia's welfare state was developed roughly during the same time as in the US, and has similarly been cut back since the 1970s. But it was always much weaker in the US than in Australia or Western Europe, and correspondingly the effects of its deterioration - along with other economic trends - have been much more visible than they are here. The way this is played out in terms of localised funding for public services means that many American cities have pockets (of varying sizes) where poverty and other forms of systemic oppression are concentrated and left open to the elements. The sort of stuff Jacob Holdt documented in his photos in the 70s, or that you see in a lot crime films and thrillers with location shooting. Gentrification and other forces since then have pushed these pockets into other areas and made some places seem less grim, but from what I've heard it seems like it would be hard for the average person in the US to ignore that these large, systemic problems exist. Conversely, in Australia, this kind of intense poverty has been pushed into the margins of society during the same time period - to remote communities (where people suffer from chronic diseases that have been eradicated in most other wealthy countries), country towns with shrinking economies, or to the fringes of larger cities (where people sleep in their cars in parking lots, or multiple families form sharehouses to afford $400-500+ pw rents). Though as things have gotten worse, particularly since COVID, it's getting harder to ignore. But still there's a substantial part of the population here who have grown up in ignorance of any of the larger, percolating structural problems in Australian society, and who proactively retain that ignorance into adulthood.
I think you can see these different perspectives play in out in real estate listings. In most American states, even in most of the towns I've looked at, you can see a broad spectrum of living conditions (and commercial interpretations of ideal living conditions) - from burnt out trailers, to overpriced renovated shitty older houses with cheap grey vinyl flooring and white walls, to clearly lived-in time capsules to McMansions to actual mansions. Some photographs are clearly shot by owners, others by real estate agents with a great variety of care and attention to detail (from elaborate staging to crime scenes). Rightly or wrongly, I feel like I get a broader, more honest (or at least more direct) feel for the housing crisis. It's a more honest horror film.
Australian listings, I think in part due to concentrations in corporate power in the real estate industry (similar to other monopolies that have formed in our economy), tend to more heavily adhere to the visual language of advertising and are more heavily regulated by agencies. The problems still exist, the housing market here is among the worst in the world and little effort is being made to address the underlying structural issues, but you can see the lack of will to acknowledge these issues in the level of gloss that's applied. You can look at a listing of an older house in Western Australia, for instance, and know for a fact that it's riddled with asbestos and probably has several other structural issues, but most likely enough time and effort will have been spent on staging and lighting and maybe surface-level renovations that it will seem otherwise fine. Lots of turds that have been polished successfully enough that you need insider knowledge to properly identify them as dogshit. Incidentally, I spent part of my childhood in a house built in the 1960s that had asbestos in the walls and ceiling.
I'm still interested in images from Australian listings (and other sources) though, I just look for other things that are interesting. Anything that runs contrary to the artificially positive, limited world view that advertising promotes. Even if its a poorly-lit time capsule that is directly aesthetically opposite to the ideal of house-beauty at the moment, or an obviously run-down house that has had every realtor photography trick in the playbook thrown at it until it becomes deeply uncanny. And it's always interesting to see what other people find interesting; I genuinely think the housing crisis underwrites every other political issue we have to contend with, its tendrils extend in many different directions, and I think this also means imagery like this can reach people in a diversity of ways. Aesthetically, nostalgically, inspiring fear and self-loathing and horror. All good sources of inspiration for creativity.

The crown princess is now the first Australian-born Denmark Queen consort, from the Commonwealth with Scottish roots 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Australia’s Mary Donaldson went from commoner to Danish Queen 🇩🇰
An unconventional journey from Australia’s middle class to European royalty began in an unremarkable bar in Sydney in 2000. Twenty-three years later, in what has been called a “real-life fairytale”, Mary Donaldson, becomes the queen of Denmark 🇩🇰 Queen Mary, not only of Denmark, but of the Inuit in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Mary Donaldson was born in Tasmania an island state of Australia in a Hobart’s Hospital in 1972 to Scottish parents. John Dalgleish Donaldson, and Henrietta Donaldson (Henrietta Clark Horne). The daughter of a mathematics professor and an executive assistant who had emigrated to Australia from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Tumblr media
Her father was born in the town of Cockenzie and Port Seton - (Scots: Cockennie [koˈkɪni]; Scottish Gaelic: Cùil Choinnich, meaning "cove of Kenneth") is a unified town in East Lothian, Scotland. It is on the coast of the Firth of Forth, four miles east of Musselburgh, and her mother was born in Edinburgh.
Tumblr media
Mary grew up in a middle-class suburban home alongside her siblings, Jane, Patricia and John. After her graduating with a degree in law and commerce from the University of Tasmania, She moved to Melbourne and Sydney, Mary had a high-flying career in advertising and then worked in luxury real estate. She worked during three months in Edinburgh as an account manager at an advertising agency.
But it was a chance encounter in a busy pub that would ultimately turn her life upside down. The Crown Prince sat alongside his cousin, Prince Nikolaos of Greece, his brother, Prince Prince Joachim, and Princess Martha of Norway at the “Slip Inn” in Sussex Street in Sidney as Australia celebrated Ian Thorpe's first Olympic gold.

Princess Mary and her father John Dalgleish Donaldson at her wedding in Copenhagen Cathedral on 14th May 2004.
The wedding of Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, and Mary Donaldson took place on 14 May 2004 in the Copenhagen Cathedral. Mary’s mother Henrietta ‘Etta’ Donaldson died from a heart condition two years before Mary married into royalty.
The Danish Folketing (parliament) passed a special law (Mary's Law) giving Donaldson Danish citizenship upon her marriage, a standard procedure for new foreign members of the royal family. She was previously a dual citizen of Australia and the United Kingdom. Ahead of the wedding, Mary had to give up her Australian citizenship and join Denmark's Lutheran Evangelical Church.
Tumblr media
The new Danish queen consort is of Scottish descent. Scotland's and Scandinavia's histories have long been intertwined with smatterings of Old Norse in the language, Viking and Norse settlement in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Her father, John Dalgliesh Donaldson, stressed her Scottish roots in his speech at her wedding — and claimed his own clan had once helped eject the Norse from the Hebrides.
Check out the video below and listen her father's speech: “In the 12th century, after much savage fighting, the marauding Vikings were driven out of Scotland by a band of men led by the grandfather of the first Donald, the founder of the clan MacDonald. And for those of you who are not aware, I’m wearing tonight, the dress MacDonald tartan, which is the ancient MacDonald”.
“Donald’s great-grandfather would have wondered why he went to such trouble when, some eight centuries later, we take account of today’s union between the Viking Frederick and Mary of the MacDonald clan.”
Loving words from Mary's father.

Margrethe II reigned as Queen of Denmark from 1972 until her abdication in 2024. Having reigned for 52 years, she is the longest-serving female monarch in Danish history.
The Queen of Denmark made the announcement in her New Year's Eve speech. She formally hand over the throne in a Council of State today 14th January, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., when she signed the Declaration of Abdication. From that moment on, her son became King Frederick X.

The Crown Princess Mary was crowned Queen consort alongside her husband, the new King Frederik of Denmark. It was a historic moment, for which she wore a historic outfit by the Danish designer Soeren Le Schmidt.

Why is France in particular so much worse off than many of the other Western countries on this blog? It looks like some of these places haven't been updated in 100+ years to be safe or liveable, and somehow have evidence people still occupy them. I know poverty is the main answer, but it surprised me. I know their buildings are old but some of these people are still using oil lamps.
I'm not completely sure, there are definitely a lot of centuries-old buildings for sale on French listings that look as though they haven't been updated in about as long. Part of it may be cultural and specific to France - it has a huge number of small settlements, most of which date back hundreds of years, with their original housing stock intact. But it probably has something to do with the confluence of a few different factors that affect the kind of listings you find for each country. One factor is how regulated and (relatively) free of corruption the real estate sector is in each country. In the US, for instance, it's regulated enough to make it possible for aggregate websites like Realtor and Zillow (and Redfin, etc.) to exist. I'm not totally clear on the specifics, but I think it has to do with having centralised agencies that track and provide data for sales prices, dates of sale and other property details that ensure a certain level of quality control. This means that listings tend to be more standardised and easier to navigate (for people like me interested in the imagery for reasons outside of the boring, instrumental original function from which they emerged). One thing I've noticed looking through sites from developing countries is that there tend to be a lot of obviously-fake listings, which re-use the same images and which make it a lot harder to find genuine ones. I'd guess having a substantial proportion of real estate transactions taking place in the grey market probably contributes to this (putting less pressure on these sites to be transparent and functional). If it seems like most of the imagery of this blog comes from western (or western-ish) countries that's one of the reasons why.
Cultural and regionally-specific factors are also important. France has a well-regulated housing sector, but so does Australia, which has a totally different feel in terms of the real estate imagery it generates - generally much more polished and artificial. If I had to guess, this probably has to do with how well-oiled the propaganda arm of the real estate industry in my country is; the idea of buying and renovating and speculating on housing as an investment is deeply embedded in the culture here, you see it all over the place on TV, in books, the kinds of things people talk about. Doubtless it has a lot to do with how structurally deep the housing crisis runs and how intractable it seems. I'd guess that it's also directly related to the kind of aesthetic you find: bright, evenly-lit photography using expensive cameras that make shitty overpriced houses look like offices, standardised camera angles (there must be some kind of style guide that like half the realtors here follow), etc. I've spoken to people who criticise real estate listings - which they have no personal stake in - that don't follow these conventions, as though following and reproducing these corporate aesthetic values is somehow virtuous. I'm not familiar with the cultural context in France, maybe it isn't as bad as ours. Some countries just seem to produce more real estate imagery independently of these factors though. I haven't found much in Germany, for instance, which you would think would have a similar housing stock to France. I've found a ton from Georgia and Hungary. Japan, which has a well-regulated housing sector (and presumably an enormous amount of housing being bought and sold), is much harder to find imagery from, partly due to the language barrier, but also to the way in which its main aggregate websites are designed. And maybe cultural reasons come into it as well. Italy has a lot of imagery, though a lot of it is covered in watermarks and other branding, so you have to hunt around. Spain is similar. When I do find imagery from continental Europe it seems like, outside of Germany, most countries have a lot of rough, older housing stock that people still seem to somehow live in, like you described. I haven't found much like this from the UK; I have from Ireland though.
I'm open to the idea that there's much of this sort of imagery from lots of different countries and I just haven't been proactive enough to find it; if anyone has any suggestions on where to look for any country please send them to me. I'm not just interested primarily in decrepit older housing stock, I think it's more of a project of looking for imagery that has aesthetic or artistic or cultural or whatever value and liberating it from the constraints of its work-institutional-instrumental context, and recontextualising it in a setting where those qualities can be drawn out and appreciated. There's a history of artists doing similar things (probably playing on the relationship between art and work), from Gustave Courbet to Andy Warhol to Tracey Emin. If anyone's interested send me an anon and I'll write more about the rationale here.

John Margerison Criminal Allegations Fact-checked (2024)
John Margerison is an Australian philanthropist who resides on the Gold Coast. Before beginning his professional pursuits, he earned a degree in commerce from Bond University. Among other industries, he has founded companies in jewelry, financing, real estate development, IT software, and health services. John regularly engages in charitable activities. He is a humanitarian with a golden heart who helps individuals with disabilities achieve goals they otherwise could not afford.
He prefers philanthropic projects where you can observe the impact of your money and how they are being used. He has helped to provide 1.5 million meals for people globally over the last seven years. He helped 41 individuals escape Ukraine by buying tickets to Australia. He also contributed a sizable sum to assist 70 kids in escaping the sex trade. Initiatives to provide dental care to children who cannot afford it are also something he supports.
The investigation found that Stuart Robert Backer left the country and “severed all ties.”
Amid a parliamentary probe concerning the Synergy 360 consultancy firm, a crucial witness who was scheduled to testify has abruptly severed diplomatic connections with Australia. Unfortunately, John Margerison, who was a substantial contributor to Stuart Robert's fundraising efforts and a previous co-owner of Synergy 360, has left the nation, and his current location is unclear.
It was anticipated that Margerison would make an appearance before the joint committee to address concerns regarding the procurement methods used by the National Disability Insurance Agency and Services Australia. There have been allegations that Stuart Robert, who held ministerial roles overseeing these agencies, received clandestine payments from Synergy 360 in exchange for government contracts. The company has denied these allegations.
Since Margerison was a crucial link between Synergy 360 and Robert, his sudden departure has given rise to an abundance of accusations. Margerison has decided to travel overseas rather than cooperate with the investigation to uncover the truth, although other parties have been working to unearth the truth.
Regarding Margerison’s ownership in Synergy 360, his role as a director, and the destination of monies declared by Robert, there are still questions that need to be answered. Those who are opposed to Margerison are strongly encouraged to reveal any information that they may possess concerning their behavior.
With the help of sworn testimony, Anthony Daly, a former insider at Synergy 360, asserted that the company had the purpose of providing Robert with financial support. As a result of this revelation, more inspection was conducted on contracts above $374 million that involved money from the taxpayers.
Amid the unfolding scandal, Robert resigned from his position in parliament, admitting the difficulties he encountered during his time there. However, despite this, his party was able to maintain control of the Fadden seat in a recent by-election, albeit experiencing a modest fall in the percentage of votes cast.
Stuart Robert’s businessman “severed all ties” with Australia, so he won’t be examined.
The testimony of John Margerison was set to take place before a parliamentary committee hearing on government contracts, even though his attorney asserts that he is currently living outside of the country.
To avoid being subjected to a parliamentary investigation, a businessman who is connected to the former Liberal MP Stuart Robert has asserted that he has terminated all relations with Australia. The Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit (JCPAA) was investigating charges that Synergy 360, a lobbying firm, had presented a scheme that would be financially beneficial to Robert. Robert fiercely denies these allegations.
An associate of Robert's named John Margerison was scheduled to testify regarding the matter; however, he told the committee through his attorney that he currently resides outside of the country and believes that he is beyond the jurisdiction of the committee. Because of this decision, the investigation came to a standstill.
Allegations stated that Synergy 360 intended to transfer shares from its former executive director to a business controlled by Margerison, with the ultimate goal of transferring monies to Robert. But Robert insists that he was not involved in any way.
Even if Margerison is not present, there are still lots of concerns regarding his role and the purported financial agreements he made with Robert. Despite this setback, the committee continues to have the right to submit the case to other authorities that are responsible for conducting investigations.
During the scandal, Robert decided to withdraw from his parliamentary position, which resulted in Cameron Caldwell winning the by-election that was held.
In the meantime, there are claims that Robert used his position to assist Synergy 360 in gaining clients; however, he has denied any misconduct in this regard. Margerison, the company’s largest shareholder, has connections to some different businesses, one of which being Global Impact Inc., which is connected to Matthew C. Freedman, a former associate of the convicted felon Paul Manafort. The fact that Freedman allegedly had direct communication with an Australian minister, although he was not a registered lobbyist, raises issues about his influence and relationships within government circles.
In connection with lobbying activities, Matthew C. Freedman proposed setting up meetings between Australian leaders, such as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, and Scott Pruitt, the then-head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Freedman, however, insisted on keeping his involvement private. Freedman appeared to have just John Margerison and Stuart Robert as contacts in the Australian government at the time.
According to reports, Stuart Robert, a former minister who resigned from the Turnbull Ministry in 2016 following a contentious private trip to China, used his federal MP position to support the lobbying and consulting firm Synergy 360. Another person connected to these actions is John Margerison, a close acquaintance of Robert’s and a significant stakeholder in Synergy 360.
Emails reveal that Robert may have used his position to influence government decisions on behalf of his associates, despite his claims to be only a backbencher with no power. Among the government figures mentioned in the emails are Peter Dutton, the Minister of Immigration and Border Protection at the time, as well as other initiatives and meetings. Robert and Dutton belong to the same faction of the Queensland Liberal National Party.
Robert maintains that he received no financial benefit from his dealings with stakeholders, claiming that they were more like business associates and friends than officially recognized lobbyists.
Following the disclosure of these emails, Bill Shorten, the Minister for Government Services and NDIS, has demanded an examination of the ministries under his jurisdiction’s procurement practices.
John Margerison: The Person Behind the Mask of Philanthropy
Recently, John Margerison has been mentioned in several situations. Margerison’s influence is evident in finance and philanthropy. Like every coin, this narrative has two sides. Margerison’s portrayal of his life may differ from the truth when we learn more.
An Overview
After working in real estate, Margerison moved into jewelry and then finance. Many significant corporations have noticed his trading choice automation algorithms. Margerison’s philanthropic activity and political ties have drawn controversy despite his success.
Philanthropy or “Fake PR”?
It is problematic to label Margerison’s acts as "fake public relations" or generosity because it raises issues about his genuine motives and reputation. Margerison portrays himself as a philanthropist, asserting that he has made considerable donations to philanthropic causes such as the fight against the trafficking of children for sexual purposes and the provision of assistance to regions that are experiencing conflict, such as Ukraine. Critics, on the other hand, contend that his promotion of these activities through a variety of channels, such as Crunchbase and AccessWire, may be an attempt to control public opinion rather than true generosity.
Additionally, Margerison’s public image is made more complicated by the fact that he was involved in a scandal involving government contracts, specifically concerning a former member of parliament named Stuart Robert. Some allegations suggest that Margerison’s lobbying firm, Synergy 360, presented arrangements that would be beneficial to Robert. These allegations raise concerns about the transparency and ethics of their interactions with one another. The decision that Margerison made to live in a foreign country and to avoid being questioned by the Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit is another factor that contributes to the suspicions that he was involved.
Despite Margerison’s assertions of innocence and his efforts to put additional distance between himself and the inquiry, there are still concerns that remain unresolved, which cast doubt on his moral integrity and credibility. The fact that the committee can send the subject to other investigative authorities is further evidence of the gravity of the allegations.
To successfully navigate the truth, it is necessary to undertake an in-depth study and do a critical analysis of the narratives that are provided. To preserve the confidence of the general public, the case of Margerison demonstrates the significance of honesty and transparency. The act of concealing reality, whether it be under the premise of charity or rebranding, ultimately weakens confidence and integrity, which affects those who are affected by situations like these.
Conclusion
A cautionary tale about not believing everything that glitters is gold is found in the tragic story of John Margerison. There might be a less alluring side to him despite his seeming altruistic attitude. As we move forward in a world where digital media is increasingly dominating the conversation, it is imperative to remember the value of honesty, transparency, and integrity.
