"Madeleine L'Engle said that any good work of art is more and better than the artist. Shakespeare, she said, "wrote better than he could write; Bach composed more deeply, more truly than he knew; Rembrandt's brush put more of the human spirit on canvas than Rembrandt could comprehend. A gardener cannot make daffodils grow, nor can a baker force the alchemic glory of yeast and sugar. And yet we are given means of grace that we can practice, whether we feel like it or not, and these carry us. Craftsmen - writers, brewers, dancers, potters - show up and work, and they participate in a mystery. They take up a craft, again and again, on bad days and good, waiting for a flash of mercy, a gift of grace."
— Prayer in the Night, Tish Harrison Warren

yesterday i finished reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and OH how i love books like this. it felt like a combination of the beautiful descriptive and slow pacing of Jane Eyre and the almost gossipy scandalous curiosity of Wuthering Heights. i'm still new to gothic romance but i am falling in love with this genre. i need more.
as my next read i started reading The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. there's just something about big mysterious mansions and castles that pull me in like a magnet.

just finished the hazel wood by melissa albert and this didn’t really dawn on me for the past 6 or so fairy tale retellings where the fairy tales are real and trying to kill you and were also compiled by a reclusive witchy woman into a disturbing anthology volume that i’ve read but. it’s genuinely so irritating that all these fairy tale retellings have their vision of these stories hinge on one specific literary compilation created by one person? like the oral tradition is very much still alive and 80% of the fairy tales i heard as a child came from there. when i say i was 'raised on fairy tales' i don't mean a creepy anthology i mean. jack tales. the absence of the oral tradition in the 'folklore is real and wants to kill you' genre will be the death of me

Click on the tablet cases category and you can request any design in the shop on one. I have a ton of classic book designs.
And there's a huge amount of devices supported -> Galaxy, iPad, Amazon Fire, Kobo, etc. Don't be shy about contacting for help, too!

1, 14, 18 for the book asks ^^
Oh thank you for the ask! 🌻
1. How many books did you read this year?
45 so far! which is way more than any other year since i started counting. Comic books and audiobooks probably contributed to that somewhat :)
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
The Wall by Marlen Haushofer and The Time of Contempt (the 4th book from the Witcher series) by Andrzej Sapkowski are the 2 that I've started and would really love to finish. (both of which i'm reading in french). Also about a million others that I haven't started yet and probably won't have time to, but oh well, a girl can dream
18. How many books did you buy?
I have absolutely no idea. I would say not that many, but since I've started getting more and more of my books second hand in the last couple of years I tend to sometimes go a little overboard in the charity shop lol

The last chapter of vol. 8???!!!!! BITCH
I’m reading this shit on the plane like
Tumblr media
On the one hand I’m like “yes, Jinshi, you better!”
On the other hand I reallly empathize with Maomao in being frustrated and thrust into situations unknowingly or unprepared. This girl who is so independent and strong willed isn’t going to let you decide her future for her like sir who do you think you are?
Anytime he’s ever brought up this particular subject, he never ASKS her what she wants, he TELLS her what HE wants.
He knows it’s selfish to go about it this way but he probably also thinks it’s the only way for Maomao to confront her feelings instead of running away all the time, even if it means her being angry with him for a while. My man needs a new strategy before he actually makes her hate him lol.
I love them both but they’re both very dense in their own ways. Jinshi is being very assertive but overstepping in what should be a joint decision while Maomao is continually burying her head in the sand to avoid acknowledging BOTH of their feelings, I JUST– 😭

"The tragic and the comic represent two ways of viewing the consequences of human effort and the nature of human existence that are in constant tension with each other. The rich reality of life as Christians understand it means that, paradoxically, our existence on this earth is both a success and a failure. We will end our days both with the death of our body and with the marriage feast of the Lamb."

Me, reading "Lessons in Chemistry" and enjoying the relationship between Calvin and Elizabeth, only to realize that there is only one way to complicate the plot with 500 ebook pages left: Don't do it, you bastard
Me, an hour later, after the bastard does it: YOU JUST HAD TO DO IT
