Raymond Luczak: "Otters"
This Poem-A-Day ASL/English poem is rendered both in translation and transliteration, and I’m astonished to have never come across ASL poetry before.
From the poet: “I ended up using ASL gloss for readings because it’s very difficult to look at my work in English and then sign it in ASL at readings, so I often create my own translations in ASL gloss and rehearse them to help me maintain eye contact with my audience while performing my work in ‘proper’ ASL. But it would be a good many years before I began exploring ASL gloss poetry as a possible genre of its own.”

OH YEAH - On Being a Bear
I’ve long struggled with my body and the way I see it. Having always been a bigger man, I’ve always felt like I didn’t belong in a world that likes to feature muscle men or gentlemen that are thinner in stature. I’m guilty of looking, sure, but my first thought has always been, why don’t I look like that? I have tried starving myself and tried weight loss diets. I tried not eating at all and I…

ok I’ve put together a list of disability-focused books for me read while I have the Seattle library ebook card. I’m not sure what order I’m going to read them in, yet. and obviously this list is non exhaustive, it’s just what I could find & deem worth reading from a surface level glance at the blurbs right now, while I have a migraine. i fully intend to explore other topics and revisit other titles im unsure about/prioritizing lower, I have them tagged separately on Libby.
if anyone would like to join me on this journey— be it by reading/listening to the books yourself at your own pace or just following my own posts about what I read— I’m going to come up with a tag for this journey. suggestions for that are welcome, I just want it to be a near-unique tag because tumblr search is awful
(most of the titles I have selected for this list at least make a notable effort to be inclusive and intersectional, if you’re worried about that. however, I have not read any of these yet, I cannot confirm anything about their actual content. I guarantee there will be excerpts worth critique from books on this list. part of exploring these heavy social topics is critical thinking.)
my current list is as follows, in no particular order:
Fat Girls Hiking by Summer Michaud-Skug — I’m interested particularly in modifying hiking (and other outdoor activities) to be more accessible for myself, as I love hiking but find it very difficult nowadays, the book seems to be at least decently disability-informed
The Future Is Disabled by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha — disability justice for a better future that emphasizes the value of disabled folks. overall interested to see the perspectives and rhetoric presented in this book, along with:
Care Work by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha — I don’t think I can do this one justice in a couple lines of tumblr text. read its blurb yourself, it includes: “a toolkit for everyone who wants to build radically resilient, sustainable communities of liberation where no one is left behind.”
My Body Is Not A Prayer Request by Amy Kenny — appeals to my experience living as disabled and intersex in a rural part of the Bible Belt in an evangelical household
Disability Pride by Ben Mattlin — gonna be honest, I threw this one in without reading its blurb. regardless of its quality, I believe I should read it based off title
Crip Kinship by Shayda Kafai — this book is based around an art activism project called Sins Invalid, exploring some of the messaging of it in a disability justice framework
Against Technoableism by Ashley Shew — from what I can gather, this book touches a lot on the social model of disability
Decarcerating Disability by Liat Ben-Moshe — prison abolition and decarceration with a disability focus
QDA by Raymond Luczak — QDA stands for queer disability anthology, also threw this one in based on the title

Manifesto of the Vibrant Dark
To begin the Introduction to Humanities is something more than I ever thought it was. This course was something that helped me to dig deeper into the way I view things. Not just by viewing certain paintings or watching certain videos but it is a life lesson and has more value. I would like to apply what I learned and explain this in more depth. Observation is very critical when it comes to life and as well something that I have learned in this course. Introduction to Humanities is a huge field that shows concerns about what it's like to be a human being. For example, their cultural values and expressions. Under these certain human beliefs, there are different branches we can focus on like philosophy, history, literature, religion, art, music, and many more things. It is all about how human beings are in the way they are shaped, based on certain situations, and also has certain themes and ideas for example main ones being love and happiness.
To begin, I would like to start with one of the art pieces that I as my representative work on. This art piece was called the Nighthawks and was done in the year 1942. When analyzing this art piece. Besides the fact that it was beautiful, it had way more to offer and such a massive message behind it. I can also relate because my family is from Brooklyn, NY where this picture was done in New York. Already I have a connection there. Edward Harper was the creator of this oil canvas artwork and he put great detail in it as well as we can correlate to 1942 being a hard time for people living in New York. I stated that “World War II happened during this time, and 1941 was the year when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The knowledge of history goes hand in hand with Hopper's art piece. Surviving and living as an individual was hard; you felt alone. A lot was going on in the Big Apple with rapid modernization in technology and culture. Nighthawks oil canvas was a fantastic art piece, and as an individual who lived in New York City during the 1940s, you could relate to the characters and figures.” So to begin with this theme of reviewing the painting it was a lonely dark vibe but as well with being the big city.
Moving on to the Abstract Image the “Interrogation” by Ali Banisdr. It is a painting that is viewed and has a lot going on. You can see colors and see a lot of action done by individuals. With looking into more detail these images in the way at first glance it looks all crazy. I stated “The painting's rough and jagged lines make me feel the furthest from peaceful, but instead, they help me to sympathize with Ali Banisadr for the skillful manner in which he captured this conflict and made me feel as though I was there myself. The conflict shown in this painting is all about how a child, Ali Banisadr, lived through the Iran-Iraq War.” Yet again after analyzing another piece that was negative and has a theme of hard time.
Another post on my blog the public art that I chose was called Buff Monster. I viewed this or on the Walls, located in Wynwood, Miami. This is a place I have been to many times before, but I always love to go and see the walls and see what has been updated. Looking at these images, they are very bright, colorful, and fun, which is a little bit different from my theme which is a more lonely and dark side. At the same time, it can correlate to the paintings that I have chosen which do have some color or a more crazy vibe, just like the Buff monster.
Again, another post on my blog was about poetic license. I chose the poem “Later” by Raymond Luczak. This poem ties perfectly together with my main theme, which is still about being in a dark place. “This poem is about Richard, Chenault who passed away at age 38. It is a tribute to Richard and how strong the relationship was between two individuals. It is about how they communicated through sign language and cherished many good memories together after reminiscing on the old times. It is tough to translate memories to deaf people once they are gone” stated by me. This poem is something that was very nice and I chose it because it shows how there is a dark side, but at the end, there is always some color and something more powerful and more powerful message that is going to be viewed at the end of the day.
In all my themes of my blog post do have a dark and vibrant side. Most of my posts are about dark things, like people going through struggles or the passing of a loved one. On the other hand, there are paintings of vibrant colors and figures. I would like to say my blog has a balance. It is divided into two different places. It's like being on two different sides of the spectrum, but in all, there are good vibes. One good example of how my blog is very divided is. There is a painting with vibrant colors, but the meaning behind that painting is very dark. There is always light but at the same time, something always happens.

Raymond Luczak, Winter 2017
Raymond Luczak, Winter 2017
Two Poems by Raymond Luczak   On Docks Off Eagle Harbor Raymond Luczak In the east, the moon rises a contained ball of flame. Winds surf the anxious waves and around the lonely docks. Unfamiliar stars tip their toes in the vast lake of night. Stale clouds coat the lighthouse blinking its tired pulse. The moon arches even higher on the ladder with each minute. The north leaks a faint light, an…

"All in Your Head" #3 Smoothly Navigates the Intersections and Ambiguities of Disabled Queer (A)sexuality and Intimacy
“All in Your Head” #3 Smoothly Navigates the Intersections and Ambiguities of Disabled Queer (A)sexuality and Intimacy
All in Your Head Issue #3: (A)sexuality, Intimacy, and Identity has some of the most consistent quality I’ve seen in an edited zine. This is what an anthology should be. The content (poetry, prose, visual art) is all great, and each piece impresses me for different reasons. And there’s a lot in there! If I’m counting correctly, it’s 94 pages long, which in my zine collection is only rivaled by…

Mollyhouse Issue 3 - Out Now!
Mollyhouse Issue 3 – Out Now!
I had the honour of having one of my poems included in the new issue of Mollyhouse. It’s an online magazine of poetry and prose and I’m so happy to have had my poem included. Here’s a bit about Mollyhouse Issue 3: This third issue of Mollyhouse features poetry and prose by writers who are not from this group: white hearing able-bodied heterosexual cisgender men. The issue is edited by Raymond…

Day 140: Friday May 20, 2022 - “New Phone”
Earlier this week while on the phone with my Grandpa in Michigan my phone started making odd noises.  And when I hung up, it immediately lost cell service that wouldn’t comeback. - no more texting my Dad about his fantasy baseball matchup.   Then the screen started wigging out and by evening it had flickered to black only to come back to life in the morning, be gone by lunch, back by dinner and gone again the next day.   Um - obviously the death call was coming for it.  Luckily Verizon was running a free iPhone deal and so I decided today to go for it and trade in my dying guy for a shiny new toy.   Before I made the move, the juices of my old iPhone 11 gave me one last opportunity to back everything up to the cloud making the setup on the new phone practically seamless; same screen photo and everything.   Did anything even change? In fact, by morning, I barely even remember it was a new phone.  Got a new hunter green Otterbox Defender to keep it nice as thats never done me wrong.   Only had the iPhone 11 for less than two years so Im a little disappointed it didn’t last longer since I didn’t have an accident to blame this upgrade on.   But ever since upgrading from my old blackjack to my first smart phone almost 10 years ago, I’ve been brand loyal to iPhone and its hard to imagine that will ever change.
Song: Flatland Cavalry - Gettin By
Quote: “...But the heart is not a computer that can be upgraded so quickly and easily with the latest version of love. Love cannot be sealed hermetically inside a tight box like any other on the store shelf; even though the word itself is in public domain, its quality is not. Love cannot promise a full customer satisfaction garanteed or a whole lifetime of dreams shared refunded, with no questions asked. Love cannot be agreed to in terms and conditions as quickly as the "Next" button being clicked. These unspoken terms and conditions grow and develop over time until it gets very messy, and no one remembers how such a mess of accusation and anger was able to overshadow their pure ecstasy of love, the spark between two people turning on a new operation system of togetherness for the first time. Love is always beta; never a golden master. If love were a computer, constant bug reports and subsequent fixes are the name of the game, and there are many unexplained breakdowns. The heart is too stubborn for explanations and too impatient for forgiveness, and there is usually no one at the tech support line. Forgive me stan, if I've crashed so often. It's just to hard to boot up to a whole new future without you. I am an empty monitor in search of a "hello.” ― Raymond Luczak

Your July 2020 Horoscope Is Here (With Poetry Recs!)
By Joanna C. Valente
It’s July. The month starts out with a Saturn retrograde in Capricorn, which basically means we’re in the midst of evaluation. We aren’t necessarily evaluating the little things, but the big things in our lives that structurally define our days, like our jobs, our relationships, where we live.
On the 5th, we’ll experience a Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn, which brings us a level deeper. Leo season comes on the 22, pushing into a time where we’re confronted by our fears and dreams. We want to be seen for who we are. You might finding yourself craving extra love and attention. Make sure you aren’t pushing someone else out of the way to do this, or are willfully ignoring others’ needs.
On the flip side, you might feel discouraged. You feel aimless and crave stability and focus. What are ways you can attain that, even in small ways?
CANCER
How can you give back to others, in big and small ways? Think outside yourself this month. How can you be better friend, partner, colleague?
Poetry rec: Imran Boe Khan
LEO
Organize your life, starting with your home, your computer, your files. Be mindful. Yes, this is your season, and you crave some recognition, but do so quietly. You can’t be intentional when you’re always the center of attention. How are you not honest with you?
Poetry rec: Dallas Athent
VIRGO
Pay attention to your feelings and intuition. You tend to ignore these feelings a lot in favor of tasks. This month is professionally important for you, so lean into that side, but don’t forget to take some time alone for yourself each day.
Poetry rec: Raymond Luczak
LIBRA
This month is twofold for you. On one hand, it’s time for you to make a list of goals you want to accomplish. You’ve been coasting on your old aspirations. On the other hand, socialize more, confide in others. The recent months have caused you to internalize too much.
Poetry rec: Mark Ward
SCORPIO
It’s a month of reflection. How can you better communicate, how can you improve yourself and work with your flaws? How can you make your house a home, so to speak? There is a lot to celebrate professionally this month, but don’t let it make you complacent.
Poetry rec: Rodney Wilder
SAGITTARIUS
Foster your optimism. Don’t let your struggles define you or define your mood. Allow yourself to explore new opportunities and ideas, and the excitement that comes with it. Focus on love and communication with those around you; that is what grounds you.
Poetry rec: Samantha Duncan
CAPRICORN
Allow yourself to forgive and heal. You are long overdue for an emotional reconciliation, of yourself and your friends. You feel disappointed and anxious, and some of that is valid, but you can’t let it get you down. How can you let yourself communicate better and build better boundaries?
Poetry rec: Michael J Carter
AQUARIUS
How can you create a healthier relationship for yourself with money in a way that is tied to your spiritual ideas? This isn’t a binary. Invest time and energy into your relationships and see how you relate money to all aspects of your life.
Poetry rec: Shira Dentz
PISCES
Focus on creating healthy routines that connect your body and mind. They aren’t mutually exclusive; if anything, they are anything but.
Poetry rec: Ellen Huang
ARIES
You are on a healing journey this month, particularly with your body. Have you let yourself get burned out? What are ways you can take care of yourself? You can’t be fully present with others until you are with yourself.
Poetry rec: Carlo Matos
TAURUS
Focus on family and spending time with your family and closest friends this month. Really get to know them. Sometimes you run on autopilot instead of truly being present in the moment.
Poetry rec: Pim Wangtechawat
GEMINI
This is a rich month for you, financially and emotionally. Get out of your shell and put your best self forward. It’s time to highlight work you’ve done and put it out in the world, whether it’s a project, sending out resumes, and/or also getting in touch with people you care about. Show them how far you’ve come. Take chances, especially the ones coming your way.
Poetry rec: Teo Mungaray
