Tuesday, March 2: Halford, “Crucible” [ENCORE]
The Today’s Metal Tune tumblr launched March 3, 2014.  To celebrate 7 years of metal, this week we are revisiting some favorites from our early days, showcasing memorable deep cuts from legendary and semi-legendary acts.  A huge THANK YOU to everyone who’s followed, liked, reblogged and commented over the years, there is still a lot more metal to come…
Resurrection was highly entertaining, albeit rather on the nose, and apparently by design: Rob Halford implied it at the time, but was explicitly clear years later, that the record was intended to signal to the members of Judas Priest that he was ready to come home.  But with his metal bonafides reestablished, and with Priest not immediately welcoming him back, the Metal God came into the second album under the Halford banner ready to make something more individual, as well as more of a band effort, and Crucible’s title track immediately paid off on both fronts.  Although “Crucible” was written by Halford and producer Roy Z., the track showed how locked-in the Halford band was with each other: every player had ample opportunity to shine, and each seized the moment, from Ray Riendeau’s jazzy bass groove to Bobby Jarzombek’s masterful double-kick and cymbal accents, and even though Patrick Lachman and Metal Mike Chlasciak didn’t have a chance to solo, their guitars charged with metallic fury. And even if Rob was still wishing he could return to Priest, he delivered some of his greatest vocals here, utilizing every aspect of his range and penning surprisingly sharp lyrics, to say nothing of that scorcher of a chorus.  The whole band sounded inspired, and “Crucible” was really one of the best metal songs of 2002, and if anything made a stronger case for Rob Halford’s relevance than the more traditionally minded Resurrection.

Friday, October 2: Halford, “Sad Wings”
Even within the context of Resurrection, “Sad Wings” was really on the nose: it was one thing for Rob Halford to recommit himself to heavy metal, and another still to write a bunch of songs describing his history with the genre, but straight-up naming a song after Judas Priest’s legendary second album (and then leading the chorus with “Sad wings of destiny”) was just too much.  So in that respect it made sense to release it as a bonus track on Japanese pressings, even if the number was otherwise an entertaining banger that would’ve fit comfortably on Resurrection proper.  The Halford band was an awesome outfit from day one, with Roy Z.’s balanced production showcasing the immediate chemistry of all the players, especially Patrick Lachman, Metal Mike Chlasciak and Bobby Jarzombek (Ray Riendeau was a fine bassist in his own right, but he wouldn’t really get a chance to shine until Crucible).  Of course, this was all in service of the Metal God, who hadn’t sounded this hungry since Painkiller- even during Fight’s better moments he didn’t sound totally confident in what he was doing. Once the cheesiness of the title was put aside, “Sad Wings” was a killer song with an excellent hook and fiery delivery, and were it not for that title it would’ve easily ranked among Resurrection’s stronger moments.
