Dazzling Fulton Center this holiday season is Rashaad Newsome’s ‘Set Pieces’, a selection of scenes from his films, 'ICON', 'KNOT', and 'LSS Kassandra 'Ebony', featuring kaleidoscopic portraits of vogue performers within a digitally rendered ornate architectural environment. These films examine language, power, and representation and are a loving portrait of devotion to the community that inspires Newsome and his work.  All videos run simultaneously for 2 minutes at the top of each hour on 52 video screens in the Fulton Center Transit Hub in Lower Manhattan.

BUT THE KITCHEN SINK Rashaad Newsome's fanciful, gleeful, streetsmart Gesamtkunstwerk Assembly at the Park Avenue Armory is an argument for maximalism. Here the artist has thrown everything into the pot and turned the flame on high. The entire Drill Hall is darkened, its floors covered with luxuriously-patterned vinyls, its walls hung with hypnotic environmental video projections, its central stage enlivened with throbbing spotlights and clouds of smoke. The nearly two-hour performance includes musicians playing electric guitar, accordion and sangen, a gospel-style chorus, a trio of lady rappers (Ms. Boogie, Trannilish and Bella Bags), a top-hatted poet-MC (Dazié Rustin Grego-Sykes), and a troupe of transgendered dancers who slither across the floor in glittering bustiers, balloon pants and leotards. The show drenches the senses; there isn't a moment of silence or corner of empty space. In early spring, as New York City emerges from pandemic, it's a welcome ecstatic blast. Despite the monumental scale of the videos and the thought-erasing volume of the music it's the live dancers, who reappear throughout in various solos and groupings, that hold the center. They are the show's principal characters. There's a touching sequence at the beginning when one dancer, put upon by unseen forces, falls straight back, only to be caught by another, who lifts them quickly and slides away into darkness as another steps forward, without noise or fuss, to right them again. One sees how these young men make a family. The performances are all charged with a furious, glittering, over-the-top beauty, but there is not enough story tying them together. At moments Assembly felt like a musical without a book. Newsome is a visual artist and the looping videos, stage set, costumes, staging and lighting are all of a piece, conjuring a hectic, kinetic big-city glamor. He has spoken publicly about this project's larger inspirations (West African civilization, artificial intelligence, trans and Black cultures) and themes (liberty, humanity, technology, decolonization), and stirred in these references without really connecting the dots. There are traditional African sculptures and textiles in the installation, but they remain part of the interior design. The videos embrace fractile geometries and simulated environments, but it's the men and women in the room that hold one's attention. As we were leaving after the performance one of my friends, a trained dancer, said, "Someone needs to teach those men how to point their toes!" There might be many formal tools from ballet, opera and theater that would focus this spectacle and sharpen its drama. Without that, Assembly is a magnificent environmental happening that hints at deeper goings-on.

ACE AIR: PAUL ANTHONY SMITH
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Program: Ace AIR Location: Ace Hotel New York Date of Stay: 11-12-17 Artist: Paul Anthony Smith
On an evening at Ace Hotel New York, Brooklykn-based artist Paul Anthony Smith created a piece called Blurred Lines, It’s The Jazz by taking black crayon to paper. The negative space forms a series of parallel and perpendicular lines, and the only color is a green flower bleeding through from the other side of the paper.
Paul Anthony Smith was born in 1988 in St Ann’s Bay, Jamaica and grew up in Miami where he attended the New World School of the Arts. He received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and now resides in Brooklyn. Numerous public collections have acquired his work, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Blanton Museum at the University of Texas. Recent museum exhibitions include a solo show at the Atlanta Contemporary, a two person show at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, and group shows at the New Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. He is represented by ZieherSmith in New York.
In November, Ace AIR was curated by Rashaad Newsome Studio, a full service production company specializing in the convergence of film, art, media, design, live performance, music, fashion, and technology. Led by multidisciplinary artist Rashaad Newsome, the studio works with the industry’s most visionary talent and brands to exhibit transmedia stories and experiences. Best known for his visually stunning collages housed in custom frames, Newsome’s work is deeply invested in how images used in media and popular culture communicate distorted notions of power. He crafts sample-based compositions that surprise in their associative potential and walk the tightrope between intersectionality, social practice and abstraction.

MÉLANGE January 20 at 7:30pm & 9pm (One night only) New Orleans-born artist Rashaad Newsome returns for this interdisciplinary presentation, Mélange.. In the Mélange performances, five dancers represent the five elements of vogue femme—hands, cat walk, floor performance, spin dips, and duck walking. As each dancer takes the floor, a hip-hop M.C., an operatic vocalist, and local musicians improvise an interactive soundtrack, building to a beautifully-structured crescendo of sound and movement. Tickets avaliable at cacno.org ($10 off w/ code AWAYCAC) #Melange #CACExperience #ContemporaryArtsCenter #NewOrleans #CAC40 #RashaadNewsome #AwayteamMC #AwayteamApproved
