@debuckgallery We're pleased to share that Zak Ové is included in Sparkling Islands, Another Postcard of the Caribbean, a group exhibition of contemporary Caribbean artists presented by 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair and curated by Caryl Ivrisse Crochemar & [creative renegades society.] @creativerenegades

The exhibition is the first by 1-54 Presents, a new programme of pop-up exhibitions by @154artfair and in addition to the British Trinidadian Ové, features work by:

Reposted from @debuckgallery We are delighted to present Sheena Rose: Born of the Sea, an exhibition of new paintings by Sheena Rose (Barbados, 1985). Born of the Sea features 10 new acrylic-on-canvas works marked by lush sunsets, deep seascapes, and the artist’s signature, semi-abstract figures. Motifs are consistently found across Sheena Rose’s artmaking, embellishing the painter’s gorgeous stories. After recently experiencing a tragic event, Rose painted to process her emotions. In Agony, the bird motif is especially pertinent. These creatures have appeared across Rose’s oeuvre, pictured in full flight, independent and content. Agony’s avian sits peacefully on the expansive ocean. It is rendered in pale yellow, the sun’s light beaming on its feathers. The pure ocean water which abounds might bring up a cleansing water, a baptism, an opportunity for renewal. Rose said, “there was a woman who told me, you go to the sea, you bathe, and you don’t look back.” Born of the Sea reflects a simply beautiful new chapter...

“My works reflect where I’m from,” says Sheena Rose highlighting the importance of geography. A continuation of her past subject matter centering on joyous figures in athletic activities, Rose rounds out these stories with special attention to the place and the person.

The work of Devan Shimoyama showcases the relationship between celebration and silence in queer culture and sexuality. Shimoyama’s composition is inspired from the canons of the masters Caravaggio and Goya, though adding a more contemporary expression and sensuality. With the usage of various materials: splattered paint, stencils, black glitter, rhinestones, and sequins, Shimoyama creates pieces that capture the magical spirit of human beings. @gavlakgallery ・・・ Tonight at De Buck Gallery: Opening Reception for #TheGAG, a group show curated by Devan Shimoyama and featuring work by Alex Anderson, Devan Shimoyama, Didier William, and Jonathan Lyndon Chase; 6-8PM. The title of the show, The GAG, draws from black, queer culture and is directly related to the themes of the exhibition as well as the complex identities of the artists themselves. The artists in this exhibition use a variety of mediums to create paintings, collages, and sculptures that defy categorization while exploring the complex relationship between the black male body, queer identity, and sexuality. The result is a visceral exhibition that celebrates black, queer culture and the fierce tenderness with which these artists approach themes of politics, gender, sexuality, race, physicality, and identity. The artist has clarified that the dogs who appear in this series serve as metaphors of domination.  More specifically, these dogs refer to watchdogs  who helped to control slaves on plantations (or fugitive slaves) during the colonial area.
