The Bankhar dog (Buryat: хотошо, Mongolian: банхар, Russian: Бурят-монгольский волкодав), is a landrace livestock guarding dog. Originally bred by the Buryat people, their success contributed to their spread across Buryatia and Mongolia and into adjacent regions before they were nearly annihilated in the mid-20th Century.
While undoubtedly an ancient breed, genetic analysis indicates that the Bankhar dog is a basal breed and may be the progenitor of all livestock guardian dogs. Legend states that the breed appeared as a huge ferocious dog that accompanied a giant descending from the mountains and the descendants of this dog are the Bankhar dog.
During the Communist era of Mongolia, Bankhar dogs were let loose or exterminated to forcibly relocate nomadic groups into socialist-style settlements. Their pelts became fashionable for stylish Russian coats, and the largest dogs were killed to feed the growing dog coat industry. By the 1980s, the breed had almost disappeared. There has since been renewed interest to preserve the breed in Russia and Mongolia; however the breed is still endangered.
The Mongolian Bankhar Dog Project has been a great resource in making this post and I highly recommend checking them out.

Our Modi. He's a Bergamasco Sheepdog. He's ginormous. Bergamascos have three types of hair: dog, wool, and goat. They intertwine and felt into what is called flocks. As they grow, we separate them so they become large, flat dreadlocks.

i really gotta wonder what goes through the heads of people that are adopt don't shop EXCEPT when it comes to service dogs. as if this somehow makes them noble? as if service dog users are the only people in the world that deserve dogs with stable temperaments or dogs that are bred with thought towards their health and structure? it's a really bizarre way of thinking that really, to me, harkens to the ARAs that are anti sled dogs until it's somebody doing it for fun only or until you mention indigenous people. are you so afraid of looking ignorant for your ill held beliefs? is challenging your currently held beliefs about what's 'morally right' for dogs that uncomfortable?
there are so many other jobs that dogs currently DO for us that require balanced, stable, healthy, purposeful dogs (including companionship!) and on top of all this dogs deserve to exist with thought and care put towards their existence. Dogs do not deserve to only exist if they're random happenstances from backroad strays or somebody's ill conceived backyard litter with zero health testing. dogs deserve responsible breeding just as much as humans deserve to have dogs with responsible breeding. how is this remotely hard to grasp?

I work with horses for a living and I’d like to hop on the bandwagon and suggest some breeds. I can’t remember if your beans are Italian, but that’s the assumption I’ve been going with so I apologize if I’m wrong!
Machete: Sardinian Anglo-Arab or Cavallino di Monterufoli
Vasco: Salernitano or Lipizzano (they come in colors that aren’t grey)
I have other recs if they aren’t Italian. I would add Neapolitan to Vasco, but you won’t find many (if any) photos of them. It went extinct in the 50s as its own unique breed. The Lipizzano is a descendant.

I didn’t have Margo entered today cause the judge sucked for her, so it was the boy’s day to shine! Varus earned himself a nice Select and our puppy, Pierre, went Winner’s dog and then Best of Winners for a big fat speciality major!!! I stepped in to handle him in the breed ring and we had a blast, he’s such a fun little guy!

The Azawakh is an ancient sighthound dog breed from West Africa. It is raised throughout the Sahelian zone of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. This region includes the Azawagh Valley for which the breed is named.
The Azawakh is a multipurpose breed and is used mainly for hunting, as a livestock guardian and as a general guard dog. Unlike a lot of guardian breeds, the Azawakh is highly social and thrives in a pack with a complex social hierarchy. They are very protective of their owners and wary of strangers.

I love that all my recent drama kinda boils down to…people being upset a purebred dog is being bred to a specific standard that highlights its original use.
