AU where Naofumi gets the BioPlant shield and its related shields and starts thinking about that long-dead alchemist and their miracle seed. How he was able to make a better miracle seed within eighteen hours of learning about the problem. Sure, it’s because of the shields he unlocked, but they’re his shields. His to use however he sees fit.

And maybe he sees fit to try his hand at some plant alchemy and mad science of his own.

He runs his fingers along the edge of his small shield and ponders.

They’re currently traveling to nowhere in particular, weighed down by extra carriages packed to the brim with miracle fruits and potatoes. By Naofumi’s estimates, it’ll feed Filo for a week. Maybe two.

Raphtalia is in the back of the head carriage, reading up on light magic from a grimoire the witch gave them. She’s read it from cover to cover twice over, but even if she finds magic more intuitive than he does she still needs to work at it. And with her motion sickness being a thing of the past (usually), she’s able to read as they travel.

Which leaves him holding Filo’s reins with a lot of time to think. Normally he’d be thinking about what accessories he can make with what he has, if they’re going to need to stop and forage for stuff to compound with, or even that it’s odd being bored with how wild his life’s gotten.

Today he’s not thinking about any of that. He’s thinking about his new shields. He’d unlocked several back in that famine town and their abilities are useful. Intermediate compounding recipes 2, plant appraisal, and plant reform.

Plant reform. Every time he turns it around in his head he can’t help but think about the implications.

His first instinct on getting the BioPlant Shield was to use it on the BioPlant Seeds he picked up. Because that felt like a good thing to try it on, even if he needed the Mandragora Shield’s plant appraisal skill to really know what he was doing.

But the skill isn’t called BioPlant Seed reform. It’s called plant reform. And the mere thought of being able to control the stats of other plants has entertained him for hours already.

It’d keep Filo from eating them destitute, for one thing. He’s come to care deeply for her but with her appetite she might as well be living on a diet of monster meat and silver coins. If he could get her to eat only miracle food that he can make by dropping a seed into the dirt and covering it up, he’d save hundreds of silver.

And he’d be able to make hundreds of silver too. They wouldn’t need three whole carriages to transport all the produce they could sell, he’d be able to create it on-demand. It’d always be fresh and in-stock.

Why stop at produce, actually? He spends hours a day foraging for stuff to compound with. Being able to grow stuff like aelo in a crate of dirt in the back of the carriage whenever he needs it? Or even just miracle plants that have the same properties and react the same way with other ingredients? Game-changing.

He changes his shield to the BioPlant Shield and looks at its stats again. Its defense isn’t anything impressive on its own, not when compared to his Chimera Viper Shield, but its equip bonus has so much potential.

And having a hook as a skill isn’t too bad either. He doesn’t use the one on his Chimera Viper Shield that often, though, and this one doesn’t seem to come with poison. He’ll have to test it out to see if it’s worth his time.

He takes a hold of the fruit he was going to have for lunch and opens its reform menu. Even when it’s not just the seed, he can edit its stats it seems.

It’s as he reads through the stats again that he thinks about the plant monsters that the alchemist’s version could make. Their attacks couldn’t pierce his defense at all, not with Gurihosato Shield’s equip bonus reducing the damage he takes from plants and his already high defense.

They were wild, uncontrolled, and didn’t have much intelligence. But even still, the lesser plant monsters spawned by the original BioPlant were able to coordinate with each other. Their attacks were varied and could be great against hordes of enemies.

And now he’s thinking about how difficult it’d be to train a plant monster. Giving it too much intelligence would be a disaster, obviously, but not giving it enough would mean it wouldn’t be able to learn or understand him.

Hm. He could always experiment. If he keeps their immunity low then it’d be easy to kill any failures off with herbicides and the boost his shield gives them when he uses them would make quick work of them. It already has.

Four to intelligence, five to mutation, and seven to growth? Somewhat smart but not clever enough to try anything underhanded, enough room to mutate into something more than just a plant, and something that will grow quickly but not too big to handle.

Would it be better to have his experiments grow slowly, though? If he raised them from seedlings would that make it easier to teach even the less intelligent ones their place? Having higher plant appraisal doesn’t mean he actually knows what these values will look like until he tries them, even if he does have a better understanding of what each stat means.

What happens if he drops the stats of an already grown plant monster? Would that be a faster way to deal with them than just dumping herbicide on them?

He could always start off with his more profitable ideas and work his way up to instant armies of loyal plant monsters. His failures will be less destructive and will still teach him things while his successes will make them more income.

He tosses the fruit and activates his shield’s hook. Vines shoot out from his Shield and wrap snugly around the fruit, keeping it still even as Filo pulls the carriage quickly over bumps on the road. With a thought, the fruit gets reeled in and he looks closely at it. Either the vines have a very tight grip or the miracle fruits bruise easily. He’ll have to check with a fresh fruit.

“Here, Filo, have a snack.” He takes hold of the bruised fruit in one hand and tosses it forward.

Filo snaps it up without breaking stride. “So yummy! Thanks, master.”

Yeah, he’ll work on making more edible miracle fruit variants first.

Raphtalia: *confessing to Naofumi*

Raphtalia: you know I love you a lot, right?

Naofumi: as a father, right?

Raphtalia: well, not exactly. I've known for a long time that I've loved you-

Naofumi: as a father? I feel the exact same way.

Raphtalia: Naofumi Iwatani!

Naofumi: ?

Raphtalia: I'm saying I love you!

Real talk, I don't like Raphtalia's design. It isn't horrible or an eyesore but I still don't like it.

Let's start with her as a child:

At first glance there is nothing wrong with this design, it's just a stereotypical medieval,fantasy female attire.

On closer inspection you'll notice that Raphtalia is wearing shackles on her wrists and neck in the same places where she had the chains in the slave tent. Yikes!

This could have been used as a way to show us where her character stands, she might be out of the slaver's hands and safe with Naofumi but it doesn't change the fact that she is stil a child slave. Then she could have completely dropped the shackles after Naofumi's duel with Motoyasu when she is freed from the slave contact and decides to willingly follow Naofumi as his partner and not his slave, but of course this isn't what happened.

The most glaring issue I have is the fact that this child isn't wearing any pants underneath her dress or tights.

The dress is not short or anything,but you must take into account that Naofumi and Raphtalia are travelling through forests, mountains and other not so friendly terrains,this girl needs something to protect her legs. Like, have you ever seen anyone climbing a mountain wearing a skirt or a dress? With nothing underneath? Probably no and there's a reason for that.

Also they are fighting monsters, this child needs proper coverage for protection.

Now her as an "adult":

She stills wears shackles, because we have to be reminded that she is a slave apparently, and she doesn't wear anything under her dress.

Like girl, you jump around and run all the time you're just flashing everyone at this point, wear some tights at least!

And now,the worst part,in my opinion about her attire: the "armour"

The only parts the "armour" is protecting are her breasts and left shoulder. I guess the gloves and boots are made from the same or similar material,wich is great, but what about the rest of her body.

The whole chest,minus her boobs for some reason, are left unprotected as well as her stomach,sides and right shoulder.

Like, what was the point of giving Raphtalia armour if it doesn't even cover major weak points?

I am not expecting her to be in a full metal knight armour, but you have to remember that is essentially the vanguard,she is the first to attack and is always on the frond of Naofumi and the rest of the party, she needs proper armour that covers weak points.

Also, I don't know why, but the colours (at least in my opinion) don't mix well together. Her hair is also kinda weird, the side hairs just above her shoulders are ok, but what about those long snakes that reach her waist? Where does all this hair come from?

gremlins wake up, new shield dad lore just dropped!

After the ‘incident’* naofumi goes almost totally nonverbal, using a form of sign language with raph as a translator.

Here’s the really fun part, instead of using sign language with the other heroes, he figures out he can essentially give them dialogue windows bc of the cardinal weapons. The other speak to him, and are give his response via the text window.

An example dialogue exchange from just before a wave.

The heroes have expressed a desire to take out the boss, rather than evacuate a nearby village. Raphtalia objects to this, and a member of Itsuki’s party states that it’s the duty of the ‘real’ heroes to slay the monster. Naofumi opens a dialogue window and the exchange is as follows:

< Is that it? You’re just going to walk away? You’re joking, right? You aren’t seriously going to leave those people to die, are you?>

(1) -> What? What the hell are you talking about?

(2) -> Of course I’m not going to just walk away! 

(3) -> That’s rich, coming from you.

(1a) < Charging off alone to fight some big monster is going to save lives. sure it may be good in the moment but in the long run, there will only be more death. Not to mention it risks your own life needlessly.>

(2a) < Well that’s a relief to hear you have some common sense, here I was thinking I was the only one. I got a plan, you with us?>

(3a) < Fine, go. Chase your glory, but don’t expect any help from me. Go on. I’m not going to stop you.>

I was messing around with DallE Mini/Craiyon and discovered that you can fuse two characters if you put in both of their names

I did already make a post about RotSH, but man...

I love this anime, it's in my top 3 and the protag is my fav character. Why did they ruin it so fricking much?

The series had so much potential. The 3 heroes could have become better, recognized Naofumi or even died, 3 good tropes. (Also angst. Imagine Naofumi being left alone as the Legendary Hero, and the world doesn't dare to kill him to summon new ones, because at this point killing him is 1. Impossible 2. The dumbest desicion ever. So he collects more daughters (maybe sons even) and spread them across his world to the point when The Shield Gang was waaay better than the 4 Heroes. Man I need to write this).

Naofumi could continue to explore his and other worlds, gaining xp and knowledge, being known as a God across dimensions.

L'arc's world troupe. Their cooperation, Kizuna's and Naofumi's research. Glass's help. Man that was good.

But nooooo, they added like 30 background characters who "play a big role" (I mean really? The tiger girl being Naofumi's "shiled"? Girl he's THE SHIELD HERO. You can't possibly level with him or the shield, go learn archery or something). Ost dying in a few episodes, the Pierro girl....

The other heroes became even more shallow. Motoyase lost his mind, Ren unlocked the Cursed Series after realising after MONTHS that this world is not a game. That troupe could've been way better.

The King's flashbacks and his obsession with the tiger girl.

I've decided to redesign my c techno design since it's been a long time

Can we please talk about the moment when Rishia "officially" joins Naofumi's party because:

Raphtalia, a girl who has been enslaved since childhood is telling another young girl to give up her freedom and become someone's else's property. This is so messed up,like:

"Rishia-san , enslave yourself willingly and you totally gonna get stronger,trust me. Don't worry about the slave owner,he is a good one, you won't regret this!"

She legit sounds like a brainwashed cult member,like seriously,who talks like that? Especially someone who has endured so much pain and suffering under slavery!

Also,the process is painful AF!

You can tell in how much pain Rishia is by the picture alone but it becomes worse when you watch the episode. She screams and cries and is clearly in pain but hey, at least Naofumi got another underage girl to add to his harem!

Even Filo and Raphtalia herself understand how painful and agonizing this process is,why would you make someone go through all of it willingly or not?

Not to mention that no,you don't have to become a hero's slave in order to become powerful. I mean,it does give a little boost but it's not necessary. Someone can become stronger in a regular party without that nasty slave boost. But of course we can have that, otherwise we will ruin the self indulging fantasy for the incels who watch the show.

Jade Blossom of Lan (Shield Hero/MDZS Crossover Prompt)

(Inspired by the MDZS/RotSH Crossover with Lan!Naofumi HERE. We're also going to ignore everything about Naofumi's name sounding nothing like everyone else, but he is Lan Naofumi here.

This turned into more of an overview of a whole fanfic than just a prompt. )

Naofumi is the Third Young Master of the Lan Sect. He is only two years younger than Lan Wangji. He has less resemblance to his elder brother than they do to each other, as he came out with more of his mother's genes, giving his green eyes and more wavy black hair, apparently inherited from his grandfather and grandmother on his mother's side.

Therefore, Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen are still called the Twin Jades of Lan, while Naofumi gains his own nickname after people find out about a secret hobby of his.

Naofumi had first become interested in Fans during a visit from the Nie brothers, where he and LWJ were left to entertain Nie Huaisang. LWJ had quickly excused himself to study, while Naofumi decided to listen to NHS rant about fans and paintings.

After that visit, Naofumi tried painting fans on his own too, and during a visit to Caiyi Town, Naofumi found out about Veiled Fans and decided to get two white, pastel blue, and pastel green ones for himself, after watching a few dancers use them.

Secretly, Naofumi went to the back hills of Cloud Recesses and tried teaching himself by copying the dancers he saw. It's awkward and embarrassing at first, even if no one is nearby, but he slowly gets the hang of it.

Naofumi becomes incredibly good at dancing with veiled fans, after dressing down three of his six layers of robes.

During one of the yearly lessons at the CR, Naofumi meets L'Arc, a young sect heir. The two become friends, even though L'Arc is closer to LWJ's age, and one day, L'Arc takes Naofumi to Caiyi to meet his friend, Therese, since they can't see each other in the CR.

After months of spending lots of time together, and the two learning to easily read Naofumi's small expressions and wanting to see more of his bright smiles, Naofumi starts confidentially calling them both his Zhiji (I think that's what it's called, I just copied it from MDZS). And one day, Naofumi decides to take them to a secluded area a little away from Caiyi, and dance for them.

They're both in complete awe, at don't stop complimenting him until they return to the CR.

For months, there have been rumors from Caiyi about the Third Young Master of Lan spending a lot of time together with two sect heirs with ancestors of foreign descent. Therese's ancestors were traveling sword-dancers, hence her clan's love for jewellery, and L'Arc's ancestors were refugees of royal descent.

Their sect's small lands were bordering each other, and they often visited one another and became close, with the leaders usually forming sworn sister- or brotherhoods.

Because of the rumors, a few disciples had followed the three, and seen Naofumi dancing, and quickly spread the words with their friends.

As words spread of Naofumi apparently 'Dancing Like A Fairy', paired with his gentle and frosty beauty, he was nicknamed the Jade Blossom of Lan, though a few daring people even called him the Jade Fairy of Lan.

However, even now, the Wens are taking over the smaller sects to expand their territory and power. L'Arc and Therese's sects are some of the first to go, but L'Arc and Therese refuse to back down, even after most of their sects are dead. They refuse and fight back as much as they can, before Wen Chao, decides to reward them for their useless courage.

By throwing them into the Burial Mounds.

Rumors go all around, about how the two sect heirs that'd been so dear to the Third Young Master of Lan had been thrown to death in the BM.

When Lan Qiren gets confirmation of this, he decides to sit his youngest nephew down for tea and tell him the news. Naofumi is shocked, his face frozen and eyes wide as tears silently start streaming down his face. His hands are shaking as he holds the teacup unsteadily in his hands until LQR takes it from him and puts it down. Naofumi grips his robes tightly as he hangs his head low at losing two of the people he'd loved the most in this world.

Naofumi does not take the news well, and end up entering seclusion to process and mourn his love.

When LXC and LWJ as why their younger brother suddenly entered seclusion, when he usually enjoyed being with other people, even if he was generally pretty quiet unless the topic was something he was passionate about, they're shocked when they hear why.

The Love of a Lan is not something to be taken lightly, and something that only happens once. Naofumi fell for two people, and it becomes even harder. He lost his soulmates at such a young age.

Since the news, for the next few years, Naofumi has not danced even once. His favorite fans, gifted to him by L'Arc and Therese, are in pristine condition, but lay unused.

When the year Wei Wuxian and multiple Sect Heirs come for the Lessons at CR arrive, Naofumi exits seclusion, but he's different. Before he was more like a brighter, smilier version of LXC, but now, he's more like LWJ with an aura of sadness and mourning around him.

When the burning of CR comes, Naofumi flees with LXC, but they end up separated. While on the run, Naofumi ends up taking in and taking care of Raphtalia and Filo and teaches them as they travel together.

When Wei Wuxian is thrown into the Burial mounds, he end up finding himself being taken care of by two people in ragged clothing and bony bodies from too little nutrition, inside a Cave. L'Arc and Therese, they introduce themselves as. They've been trying to survive for years in the place, but they're getting weaker without their Golden Cores, and they've been unable to get out.

Wanting to help, and to survive without his Golden Core, WWX invents Demonic Cultivation.

In the end, he escapes the Burial Mounds with L'Arc and Therese in tow. The two decide to hide their identities during the Sunshot Campaign and act as sort of Trump Cards. They start using their lost sects' bloodline techniques. L'Arc starts using a scythe, and Therese starts using Sword Dancing.

After a while, Naofumi end up finding and joining the Sunshot Campaign, while leaving Raphtalia and Filo behind when he goes to the battlefield. He keeps sneaking glances at the two people who joined with WWX, who're either wearing hoods and veiled hats at all times.

The way they fight... It reminds him of L'Arc and Therese.

One day, the two get captured by the Wens, and when they returns, they're wearing neither hoods nor hats.

Naofumi silently breaks down upon seeing them, and as soon as allowed, rushes to the infirmary to see them.

The three reunite, which includes tears and kisses, and after that, they start fighting together on the battlefield, slipping into it almost seamlessly.

Canon MDZS happens as it happens. Naofumi notices LWJ's love for WWX, and tries encouraging his younger elder brother to communicate with WWX, but it's still hard for LWJ to say what he feels.

Naofumi does not fight in the siege at the BM, not against his younger elder brother in the cave, he refuses to and has to be held back by multiple senior disciples as LWJ is whipped 33 times. Naofumi allows no one but himself and one doctor to tend to LWJ's wounds. They betrayed LWJ, and Naofumi won't stand for it.

When LWJ wants to look for WWX's remains and properly bury them, Naofumi offers to do so instead, and makes LWJ stay in bed.

Naofumi flies to the BM, and find nothing but blood and cloth scrapes scattered all over, and a feverish A-Yuan clutching a crimson ribbon.

Naofumi takes A-Yuan back, and LWJ sheds a few tears upon seeing the boy alive. Naofumi relates to LWJ about mourning his love, and they bond a little over losing their loves, and then raising kids in the meanwhile.

While all of this happens, Raphtalia and Filo and traveling around for a bit with L'Arc and Therese as Rouge Cultivators.

A few months later, A-Yuan is introduced to his two adoptive cousins, Raphtalia, some years older than him, and Filo, around his age.

A-Yuan grows up with a few visits from his cousins, and his younger uncle often leaving the CR to travel with his family.

Naofumi is overjoyed for his elder younger brother when WWX comes back.

At some point, Naofumi leaves the Lan Sect to establish one with L'Arc and Therese after they Elope, named the Rock Valley Sect, where they include teachings from all their sects. Raphtalia and Filo are the first disciples, but then some refugees Naofumi saved during the SSC come, and decide to join as well, and their sect grows steadily.
