So this was a big hoax character back in the day in the UK and I would honestly love if SEGA made it real. Like give him a better name and design but yeah. One, Knuckles needs more pals, maybe he can live on Angel Island so Knuckles doesn't get lonely up there since SEGA says he can't leave. Two, we could use more aquatic characters. Imagine the level possibilities he'd open up.

Here we have Rankles the Otter, a hoax character made in a fake UK contest that was clearly a poor edit of Knuckles. lol

This one was interesting since I edited him to look less like Knuckles. My headcanon, a hardcore rollerblader with a Spike wisp buddy named Fireball.

GREAT ending point but it did kill me bc I was imagining this tearful reunion between a long-lost child and his family/community and not only were the villagers suspicious, ylva herself didn't believe him 😭😭😭 I can appreciate the realism the first time that happened but I really didn't like the slapstick violence directed towards a character who's already experienced so much abuse and trauma, and who didn't come home because he was first a child solider and then a literal slave. I like ylva, it's just an error in tone imo

otherwise...oh how beautiful.....it was really nice to see iceland on my big desktop screen, and then his reunion w helga...ari coming in...helga welcoming einar like her own son after he's lost so much...wow!! I was getting very 🥺 about such a long-awaited reunion

the same thing actually happened in the redwall book taggerung - a newborn baby (otter) is prophesied to be a great warrior, so a group of bandits ambush his father and kidnap him. he's raised as one of them and given the name taggerung, but he never feels at ease with this life of violence and he eventually leaves and is reunited with his long-long mother and older sister as a teenager, and is given his old name back, deyna. it's very emotional and that book was always one of my favorites despite redwall's infamous animal bioessentialsm (otters are good guys so of course tagg/deyna has to leave this band of murdering ferrets). VS is a lot more realistic about these things but I was at times doubting that he'd ever want to go home, so it was nice to see. ylva and ari and their kids and helga...they're still living well :)

this was also a good point to end the anime on - he finally came full circle and was able to return home, resolving the nagging plot thread of over a decade. when he realized he didn't know how old he was that actually broke my heart....also his haircut at the end of s2 is so much better god bless. I like long hair but he looked like shit 😭 im so glad he shaved

ALSO I know ketil's farm is one of the better ones for letting slaves buy their freedom but 1. they still own slaves 2. ketil still murdered and abused arnheit 3. not all slaves have that option, it's entirely arbitrary and 4. einar and thorfinn WERE abused and starved and assaulted on that farm by the farmhands and guards. watching them wave goodbye fondly to the slaveowners and their overseers was...odd!

also calling the guards 'guests' sounded like a euphamism for something a lot darker im ngl. just call them guards....

thorfinn talks about warfare and slavery like they're just naturally occuring and impossible to stop, but he can't seem to hold individuals to account for their roles in these systems the way he flagellates himself for. why aren't those men his enemies? aren't they here to kill innocent people in the name of the king? didn't they sign up for that intentionally? why shouldn't einar kill ketil, or garder kill snake? ketil and snake are allowed to murder slaves, but slaves can't fight back or take vengeance? his pacifism is just circling back around to silence and complicity - to siding with the oppressor. he did help garder, but wasn't that just because he was there? I know he has very specific personal reasons for acting the way he does, but characters who commit to nonviolence even when it's obvious injustices are being committed really rankle me...I'm glad he's healed and all but I wish he hadsome of that fire back...sometimes you DO need to fight for yourself. I don't think garder would be haunted for the rest of his life after killing HIS master.

I do kind of want to rewatch s1 just to enjoy the fight scenes and nature animation but I also want to read the manga so maybe I'll leave that for another time. I liked what they did with s2, the straightforward brutality - and self-awareness - in s1 was really really good. now that thorfinn is trying to actually do the right thing, it can get really complicated.

because as nice as an idea as vinland sounds, it IS ultimately an unrealistic fantasy resting on the myth of the empty frontier. for one, people literally already live there. that's not 'pure' uninhabited land and I don't know how aware the show is that this is a very old racist belief. I know the CHARACTERS aren't thinking too deeply about it, but this series was written in the past 20 years. the author knows full well who was living there, and the genocide and slavery that supported and enriched the country that europeans would go on to found in this place. plenty of refugees and outcasts fled to 'the new world' from europe seeking safety from persecution and danger, but that doesn't mean the us isn't built on a foundation of violence and brutality

and besides the implications that colonialism is the solution to their problems...it's also impossible to entirely flee hardship and suffering. like, ultimately it's worth it to do the work to make your communities and countries livable, right? another way to look at thorfinn committing to peace is to say he's abandoning the people who can't or don't want to leave. this dream of his is so absurd and poorly supported by anything that's actually happened in the real world that I have to believe the author knows that. so I definitely do want to read the manga, and my HOPE is that thorfinn realizes the solution isn't to simply leave and try to colonize a place that literally already has inhabitants (and also does get snow. like the so-called gulf of st. lawrence is in CANADA).

and if he tries to start working with justifiable violence again, he's going to run very quickly into the choice on who to inflict that violence on, and why. what about his pre-existing biases? is he even aware he has them? is he going to be willing to kill the Mi'kmaq people for his dream? what if there are too many people coming in and the Mi'kmaq leadership can't give him any more of their land? coexisting is one thing, establishing a new country and believing it'll be a utopia is another. like, it's a mess waiting to happen

it's for these reasons that I really hope the manga ultimately has thorfinn realize that making a better world has to actually start by changing the one that he's living in. this is why I had hoped he'd become canute's advisor...oh I was so excited to hear canute withdrew troops from england! YES!!! he needed thorfinn to remind him....and as I suspected, they grew to trust him more after that

anyway there's no indication either the series or the characters will realize that, but the creator has proven extremely well-versed in emotional and political complexities so...I really hope we get to a point where that happens instead of thorfinn becoming the first white settler of turtle island. stories even set far in the past can have meaning when it comes to political issues - they aren't created in a vacuum
