This one was interesting since I edited him to look less like Knuckles. My headcanon, a hardcore rollerblader with a Spike wisp buddy named Fireball.

Rankles the Otter is a character who was created in the pages of the UK version of Sega Magazine, being the subject of a fake giveaway where whoever took a picture of the character in-game would earn a million pounds. He was promoted as being Knuckles' sidekick in the game Sonic & Knuckles, though it was clear that the artwork provided by the magazine was just a Knuckles edit, giving him an indented head, spikeless gloves, and two big round "ankles" with four spikes each.

Despite being an obvious farce, people back in the day tried to pass Rankles off as a real character for a few months after the article he debuted in. According to this one wiki I read, there was a palette glitch in S&K that would happen, using debug mode, if you switched from Marble Garden to Launch Base then went underwater, causing Knuckles to take on a green coloration similar to Rankles.

Thanks to this video, I found out about a secret Sonic “character”.

Apparently a Sega Magazine in the UK held a contest for a “secret character” in Sonic & Knuckles named Rankles the Otter.

He’s actually in the game...kinda.

The people who found it weren’t rewarded, as the magazine just claimed it was just glitched sprite of Knuckles. Some claim he’s never existed, but I love him and his disgusting ankles too much to believe otherwise
