listen, everybody watched or read Scott Pilgrim and wondered why Scott was the protagonist instead of Ramona. why anyone would identify with or want to be Scott, not just because the narrative makes it clear that Scott is a crappy dude, but because Ramona was so cool, so sure of herself. so pretty. we all deep down wanted to be like Ramona in some way we couldn’t quite define and for some reason we felt embarrassed or afraid to say it. we all chalked it up to Scott being a loser and Ramona being the cool one that he’s chasing after, but on some level we knew it was more than that, something we were scared to look at too closely for fear of finding that it meant something more about ourselves that we weren’t equipped to deal with, weren’t ready for. but we remembered that feeling, and it stuck inside of us along with all the other feelings just like it that we’d tucked away because we couldn’t think about for too long because it made us uncomfortable.

this is definitely a universal experience shared by all dudes in in the early 2010s.

So What are your Issues with Scott Pilgrim? Parts that have not aged well? Stuff you think are missing opportunities? or the Fact that Scott is a bad person, did you know that

I don’t have too many serious issues! When it comes to the comics, it’s primarily that it’s an indie comic from the mid 2000s about an average gamer dude and has some hang ups that come with that specific period of indie comics and gamer dude culture. The movie is where the issues get more complicated, since I like the movie a lot but I feel like it lost a lot of the character depth to (understandably) fit it all into a two hour movie, which in turn makes Scott and Ramona into way more flat characters, in a weird way turning them into the exact trope that the comic was trying to go against. This isn’t helped by the fact that the movie was being made before books 5 and 6 came out, so a lot of the weight of the ending just couldn’t be properly reflected or played with in the film. And because of this, at times it makes Scott Pilgrim feel like a precursor to Ready Player One, a story about how cool it would be if video games were real and you got a hot girl, versus what Scott Pilgrim actually is, a story about a bunch of young 20 somethings who frame their existence in the context of video games as a way to craft their own important narrative about their own life and portray a form of arrested development.

I hate when they de-age Matthew just so he can be in knives role, I hate when swapaus just change the characters and their names instead of making an actual AU of what happens when the other character's events

to me, I don't want Scott to be the one skating around Ramona's headspace

I don't want Envy to be in gideons role or add two other characters to fill in the katayanagi twin's roles

I want AUS to be its own, not some kind of copy-and-paste from the source material

My swap AU is closer to the actual source

In my swap AU,

Ramona is still skating around Scott's head space but she is the one who gets obsessed instead of Scott, Scott works as a pizza delivery man

Scott in this AU is still an autistic nerd but is clueless about everything around him, he's just keeping a cool head in comparison to the source materials, he's still the bassist of Sex Bob-Omb but doesn't reveal that to Ramona yet cause he temporarily quit after Gideon became their producer

the seven evil exes are not Ramona's version of Scott's friends cause fuck that, instead the 'seven evil exes' are more just exes that are not evil and overly obsessed with Ramona cause Gideon ain't there to join forces with them

(In my head, Gideon is the reason why most of the league even took revenge on Ramona, since he was the one that said it, katayanagi twins just followed with it cause damn do they have it rough, despite not being evil, Lucas also went with it, todd is just angry that ramona has the audacity to leave after he punched the moon for her, Matthew and Roxy are the only ones that genuinely are sad and angry)

The League of Evil Exes are just the same 5 with Lynette for support, they are not in any of the OG league's roles, they're on their own

their name will be, Vv cause V is the Roman number 5, and v as in victims

knives are the first V but she's still 17, she keeps coming back to fight Ramona until finally realising it isn't worth it

Kim is the second, they met after a Sex Bob-Omb concert, they're not Clash of the Demon Heads in a sense by the way, they're much more different, Kim explains the whole thing to Ramona, and they fight for a bit while also talking as they fight, then they stop and just decided to go out for a drink

wallace is the third and doesn't actually fight with Ramona physically, rather using psychic powers thanks to his current boyfriend, but after the fight, they're still hesitant cause it turns out that Wallace was the one that made the Vv and Ramona is genuinely jealous of Wallace but they later just become buddies

next is Lisa, at first Ramona doesn't even know what to do with Lisa, originally Ramona thinks Lisa is just a friend who is getting too close for comfort with Scott, then boom, big reveal that Lisa is actually one of the exes, they start to fight, but it ended up alright

last is envy and Lynette, the reason for this is that I like to believe that Envy was the one that wanted to take revenge on Scott, but nobody truly wanted to fight other than knives, Lynette is there to help cause they have a much healthier relationship compared to the comics, also envy's reason is cause she's jealous over Scott and ramona after hearing the fact that todd is now living with ramona and Scott is dating her

but what happened to the seven evil exes you may ask

well

Matthew and the twins would probably be the only people that Ramona talks to daily, i like to think Matthew lives nearby and that the twins are not as rich as Gideon but still have enough to have a house up in Toronto

Lucas after another flop movie (blame it on the writers, Lucas did nothing wrong) gets broke and starts to live with Ramona at first, Lucas is kinda like Kim in terms of his relationship with Scott, hot take that maybe Scott and Lucas have a better bromance than Gideon and Lucas

todd would be Ramona's roommate, but unlike Wallace, he's this self-destructive asshole that made himself sympathetic after Envy dumped him and he had nowhere else to go other than to Ramona, which just causes Ramona to feel like she's once again with a prick like Gideon

Roxy comes by every week or so to talk with Ramona and clearly is still hang-up over ramona. also has the best wlw/mlm solidarity friendship with wallace

Gideon would still be a billionaire and he's Sex Bob-Omb producer, and at one point forces them to fight against Ramona by using the glow but they manage to break free and turn against Gideon

basically yes the same thing with the comics and the anime, but Ramona is the one being paranoid and self-conscious about things but trying to act like she's not affected by this, and Ramona is the one who has to fight with Scott exes plus confront herself

and everything is not in the same chronological order as the comics

this swap au focuses on ramona and her ex, while Ramona and Scott realise why Vv was even made in the first place

young Neil, Julie, and Stacey would be Ramona's friends before Ramona gets to know the others

- NEG Ramona Flowers, Every time she gets a new partner, they must battle her previous ex's "Trail of The Ex's" (NEG) Scott is finally someone to match her Awfullness.

- NEG Matthew Patel, the first Evil Ex, the whimpiest by Ramona's standards if she hasn't already forgotten him- How someone can fail without even having someone to battle is beyond her. Insecurity : Weak

- NEG Lucas Lee, Second Evil Ex, he is constantly seeking the approval of others in a despite attempt to seem "cool" specifically too Ramona- but his desperateness made Ramona realise just how Pathetic he was. Weakness : People Pleaser

- NEG Todd Ingram, Third Evil Ex, He suffers from an ever increasing case of frequent "Puppy Love" He is fragile because he is constantly hoping to find some sort of magical form of love. Weakness : Hopeless Romantic

- NEG Roxie Richter, Fourth Evil Ex, Ramona never even made her battle the other ex's- it almost felt like a sign of disrespect to her she has a deeper anger toward her, but also longs to be acknowledged. Weakness : Longing

- The NEG Katayanagi Twins, Ex Five and Six, Orginally defeating every task that Ramona put them up to together - eventually, the both thought they could win the heart of Ramona together without having to fight eachother. They were wrong and now are both still angry at each other, consistently fighting, trying to be the one to still get with Ramona rather than together. Weakness : Eachother

- NEG Gideon Graves, Final Ex, She thought he was just as evil and manipulative as her. But, it was all an act and a front so he could impress her, but his wits still manage to impress her and make her question if he could be made into something evilier. Weakness : Arrogance

Ramona Flowers Twice Removed

Based off a small discussion with @centrally-unplanned (shoutouts homie)

One of the less obvious things about Scott Pilgrim is the way in which it has an underlying running arc with Ramona that's significantly less explicit than Scott's arc (except in Book 5). Ramona has to confront all of Scott's exes, and how they reflect on her the same way that Scott's exes reflect on him - and that's one of the more clever things that BLOM does in the comics.

The first one is Kim, Scott's High School ex; Kim is in a lot of ways a parallel to Ramona. Scott's pet name for both is very similar (Kimmy, Rammy); both of their last names are largely biological (Pine and Flowers). Ramona's head glows while they're watching the Lucas Lee movie, which in turn mirrors the Scott vs Simon Lee fight and the Knives-Ramona fight smashed together; the Simon Lee fight particularly sticks out as that's when it glows hardest. Scott also obviously lies and about how "he doesn't even remember his high school girlfriend" - and corrects himself to "girlfriends" to make himself look cooler; Ramona's lie comes later, when she's saying she didn't dump him for any cocky pretty boys (Todd). That entire arc gets resolved on the personal level by Scott introducing Ramona to Kim. The resolution between the two is just "hey, he can still hold a friendly relationship with one of his exes", which Ramona is utterly unable to do up until that point.

The next one is Envy, whose parallel to Ramona happens at a number of levels, from the superficial (both share the middle name initial V, but Natalie gets a cool menacing nickname, and Ramona gets to be a motorhome - obviously a sign of Ramona being way less "cool" than Envy) to the obvious (both of them are mercurial people, Envy out of ambition and Ramona as a self-defense mechanism). Ramona has to wrestle the girl that is mentally torturing Scott and who has moved into fully incompatible territory with him; but she also has to be honest to Scott and admit she just dumped Lucas for Todd with zero hesitation. The thing that brings their fight to a halt is the two pseudo-bonding over a terrible ex; and this Hyper-Scott character in Todd - but also in Scott being willing to intervene in Ramona's side during the Ramona vs Natalie fight and make it clear that no, he's not using her as a rebound to get with Natalie.

After that, it's Lisa, and this one is testing Ramona's faith in Scott not to cheat on some random girl he was connections to, and with whom he might have cheated before. Ramona's entire arc is this perpetual fear of Scott cheating on her, and in this arc she does - she makes out with Roxanne off-screen! Ramona is terrified of some influence from the past, however no-strings-attached it is, taking Scott from her, and she's not realizing that - and it's projection from who she is, in a sense.

On volume 5, we finally arrive at Knives and the confrontation that Scott did do the cut-and-run thing, but it was dumping someone else for Ramona, and Ramona now has to deal with the fact that Scott cheated; so it triggers her temptation to get moving again; that "real life is waiting", to quote one of the Twins. That Scott isn't perfect when it comes to that, and that he's going to fuck up - but he's also not better than her, because her two exes here are guys she two-timed. But she can't reconcile that at the present time, so it triggers her defense mechanism - escape.

Volume 6 has Ramona confronting herself entirely off-screen - the last of Scott's exes. And that she too hasn't been perfect; she admits as much, and comes back for herself - and Scott, though she can't fully admit it until she gets The Power of Love. She has to want to change versus the one who sees things going poorly and bails as soon as possible.

I think especially because we don't get to see Ramona through Volume 6 until she comes back, that's not made sufficiently explicit as a running arc. Which is understandable; it's hard to do the Vol. 6 narrative well while also showing what Ramona was up to and making that arc more explicit.

23. What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about to express?

Great question for Vi, because they have a very hard time expressing any feeling at all. They do feel a lot all the time... But they barely show it and fear they might be seen as someone too cold. Or they have the exact opposite problem, when they express their feelings way too much and others don't know how to react.

But about "to process"? I would say boredom. Because this makes them overthink, so they mistake it as sadness.

25. What is your favorite thing about your OC?

Oh Vi is very personal to me. In fact, the answer for both Vis would be the same: they were not easy to love to me. Because they were so... Similar to me (duh) and it felt weird. But funny enough, I started liking myself more now because I'm similar to Vi.

And to answer more about MW!Vi: I really like some details of their design, like their pink hair, dog shirt and tattoos :>

1. What memory would your OC rather just to forget?

Their memories are already pretty confusing because of the Glow, to start - it's lowkey a joke but also true. After knowing about this Gideon's power, they start doubting everything that ever happened to them.

But the good part is that there are many memories they would like to forget. A more recent one would be the big fight she had with Ramona (I'm being vague because I think I never talked about this part of the plot before).

11. What is your OC's weapon of choice? Have they actually used it?

Gideon said he could give Vi any weapon she wants. In theory, she thinks some are cool. But she hates actually using them. Vi is not a fighter. But if she needs to fight, she would use her own nails to be more cat-like!

The doors to your apartment opened, letting the harsh wind enter your humble abode. Ramona had just came back from her work, her cheeks almost matched the current color on her hair.

"Gee, you're alright?" You approached, gently brushing off the leftover snow on her clothes.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." She took of her goggles, finally having a free moment to compose herself. "It's wasn't that bad, I took the shortcut."

"Good." You said, helping her after she undressed from her jacket, putting the goggles in a safe space. "Do you want some hot coco?"

"Oh, yeah, please." She smiled warmly, making a beeline to sit on the couch.

"I was dreaming of something hot to drink in the middle of this snowstorm." She flopped fully onto the cushions, turning herself into a burrito with the blanket stolen off the couch. "So glad I'm not there anymore," she sighed tiredly.

After preparing the kettle, you returned to the sight of Rammy-cocoon, which warmed your heart. You sat next to her, wrapping your arms around her body wrapped like a Christmas present.

"Are you still too cold?" You inquired, examining her now only slightly red tinted cheeks.

"Just a bit," she explained, "but it's fine, don't worry." She reassured you with a smile. She appreciated your worries.

Gently, your hands reached to cup her cheeks. They made a cold contrast against your warm palms. Ramona's eyes focused on your face, which slowly melted into a a caring smile. A delicate kiss was placed on her forehead. She was confused but didn't complain, her expression glowing. Simple displays of affection like that, in the quiet corners of your house were the best moments of her life. Not being met with any negative reactions, you playfully started peppering her whole face in kisses. A chuckle left her lips as soon as you started.

"...The water is done," she pointed out, curving her lips into amused a smile. The kettle stopped making sounds about a minute ago, but you were too busy cherishing your girlfriend.

"I know, I know," you said, slowly untangling yourself from her. She didn't have to wait long for your return, carrying two cups of hot beverage in your hands. She took out one hand out of her cocoon to carefully grab the mug from you. Sitting next to her, you blew on the hot coco. It was still too hot to consume. You decided to leave it on the table for now. Ramona seemed to come to the same conclusion, repeating your actions, just to end up being defeated by the steaming liquid.

Trying to occupy yourself with something until it cools off, you grabbed the tv remote, putting something as a background noise. Ramona watched you switch the channels, finally landing on something that entertained you both. Seeing you done with your task, Ramona lifted the blanket, inviting you to come closer. Granted this opportunity, you didn't hesitate, quickly scooting over to her. She placed her legs on top of your lap, covering you both with a blanket while clinging to your side. She wasn't cold anymore, your bodies created a nice, cozy ball of warmth. Draping her arm over you, she leaned on your shoulder. Being her personal pillow was one of your most appreciated qualities.

Even though your sight was focused on the tv, your mind was occupied with appreciating the current moment. You waited for this ever since she left the house.

Feeling the soft lips on your cheeks caught you by surprise, shifting your stare onto Ramona. She had a lovely, relaxed smirk on her face, looking at you with affection. You reciprocated the soft look, showing her a warm smile in return.

"What was that for...?" You asked playfully, probably knowing the answer.

"...Just returning the affection," she prefaced with a tinge of cheekiness seeping into her tone. Your unfinished response was muffled by her mouth softly crashing into yours, enveloping you in a sweet kiss. It didn't last long, but you appreciated every second of it.
