My Best and Worst Films of 2023

So yeah it probably seems a bit weird that I'm posting my best/worst films of 2023 list in 2025, well there's a reason for that.

Since for my 2020 list I had managed to cover both theatrical and streaming releases, I had planed on doing the same from then on. Unfortunately due to a combination of procrastination and me finally managing to get a job after donkey's years of searching, I've fallen a bit behind on streaming. But it was starting to get a bit ridiculous so I've decided to say fuck it and post rough versions of my 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 lists with only the theatrical releases so far, and I'll just add the streaming ones on in italic as I try and catch up over the year.

Hopefully I'll have the lists done by the end of the year. Hopefully.

So anyway in 2023, I saw 70 new theatrical releases (which ones - along with any streaming releases - can be found on my Letterboxd page: ‎(letterboxd.com/firebirdmaximus/list/2023-releases/), sixteen more than the previous year (firebirdmaximus.tumblr.com/post/776951623718207488/the-best-and-worst-films-of-2022).

And once again a note to non-UK viewers, as with previous years, since I’m English and live in England and subsequently watch films at cinemas in England, this list will be going by UK release dates so If you see a film on the list that you swore was from 2022 it was probably not released here until 2023, contrarywise If your surprised that a particular movie from this year is not on the list it might not have been released here til 2024.

If you see a streaming film here on my list and it's not in italics, that means it probably got a limited theatrical release somewhere in my area and that's how I saw it.

if you have the peacock app, I'd highly recommend watching rally road racers. it has a great cast of characters with good designs. the soundtrack is mostly bangers, and the style is really vibrant and fun. it's also pretty funny. good stuff.

Let's say during a confrontation with the decepticons the kids are there as well and need a getaway as they see this rally racing car pull up and basically "get in my car!" As they get away the decepticon are a bit impressed how this driver is getting away especially in narrow roads pulling all types of maneuvers

While they can hear bass heavy music coming from the vehicle *cue bonde do Bruano dance remix*

I bet the bots with vehicle modes would be somewhat attracted to them *cough knockout cough* and other veicons

Yep autobots now have a rally racer in there ranks

Oh god Knock Out in particular is down to make his attraction known. He wants to race with the human and rizz them up in his obnoxiously hot way. Who knows, he may let you drive him... if you promise something in return Smokescreen also finds it so hecking cool - now watch him beef with Knock Out over them. Not because they believe only 1 can be with the reader, but because one is a Decepticon and the other an Autobot. So obv no poly can happen (unless you want chaos incarnate) The other vehicons have their cooling fans kick in. They're flustered by it but rn they're trying to survive, not get with an organic

Medic

Doesn't get the hype about rallies. In his words, why would you want to purposefully want to risk getting hit with dust and rocks and damaging your hearing?

A real killjoy. You end up standing away from the front row, dust clouds barely hit you, in the shade, no junk food. Basically a dull experience just because of his neatness as a doctor.

However, if a crash happens, Medic is the first to jump to help. No matter how much security tries to stop him, he'll be there on scene.

If you want an autograph from the racers, he'll insist on patiently waiting in line. He's a mercenary, but as a medic, there are too many people there to create a fuss.

Even if you couldn't enjoy it, Medic insists that the day was great. And maybe you can convince him to buy a piece pf merch to remember the experience.

Sniper

Isn't the biggest fan of rally, but doesn't mind if you want to go to one. He doesn't like all the people, the invasion of personal space in the front rows and the loud noises for something that's meant to be fun.

If the parking lot isn't too far, Sniper offers to sit on his camper's roof. It's clean, away from the crowd, and gives a good view of the track and cars. He can give you binoculars to watch the cars closer too.

Just watch out to not get heatstroke. He'll be fine, he's fine in the heat, but the scorching sun combined with a hot camper roof can get to a person.

Insists on bringing your own food. Sniper thinks that paying 2 dollars to have sauce on something is ridiculous and the fast food isn't too apetizing for him.

Be thankful he's not afraid to choose stray dirt roads to avoid traffic. Otherwise you'd be stuck behind a line of cars the rest of the day.

Spy

If you somehow convince him to join you to go to a rally, he acts like a VIP, period.

Spy has his own tent in which he hides from the shade and dust that comes his way. Sure, he sticks out like a sore thumb but that's the point.

Doesn't judge and judges at the same time if you decide to buy merchandise. On one hand, he spends thousands on suits, so he can't talk, but on the other hand, he doesn't understand if it's one of many rallies.

No fast food, obviously. Only his own brought meals and Spy might share if he feels pitiful enough for you after you get some overpriced fries for yourself.

Bribes the traffic control as the attendees leave to let him past first. People are confused when he just drives past them without a care in the world.

55 years ago today, January 4, 1969, the final new episode of Wacky Races aired. It is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions for Saturday mornings. The series features 11 different cars racing against each other in various road rallies throughout North America, with all of the drivers hoping to win the title of the "World's Wackiest Racer". The show was inspired by the 1965 comedy film The Great Race.

The cartoon had many regular characters, with 23 people and animals spread among the 11 race cars. Wacky Races ran Saturday mornings on CBS from September 14, 1968, to January 4, 1969, and in syndication from 1976 to 1982. Seventeen 20-minute episodes were produced, with each of them featuring two 10-minute segments.

The series spawned numerous spin-offs throughout the years featuring Dick Dastardly, the most similar in theme being "Fender Bender 500" in 1990.

In 2017, the series was remade as a reboot, airing on Boomerang. It aired only once on Cartoon Network on August 13, 2018.
