Delhi Police Busts Multi-State Cricket Betting Racket, Arrests Mastermind And 9 Others
In a coordinated crackdown on illicit cricket betting activities spanning multiple states, Delhi Police's Crime Branch has apprehended a group of 10 individuals. These arrests stem from investigations into betting on the Big Bash League T-20 cricket tournament in Australia. Utilizing modern technology such as mobile phones and laptops, the network was engaged in illegal wagering. Authorities have confiscated a range of equipment from the suspects, including five laptops, 24 mobile phones, an LED smart TV, and other materials linked to their operations.
Central to the betting syndicate was Raju Vaishnav, a 48-year-old goldsmith from Delhi's Karol Bagh, identified as the operation's linchpin. Vaishnav's strategy involved enlisting bookies from various regions, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, to expand the network and boost earnings. This collaborative effort aimed to capitalize on the lucrative betting market associated with cricket tournaments.
The group's method of operation was twofold: they conducted their betting activities online through a website and offline by recording wagers in notebooks. Their system had been in place for more than a year, with daily transactions hitting around Rs 1.5 lakh. The profit margins for the syndicate fluctuated between Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000, illustrating the significant financial stakes involved.
Among the arrestees were individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, highlighting the syndicate's extensive network. Notables include Ajay Kumar, a 43-year-old cloth shop owner, and Yogesh Taneja, a 36-year-old medical shop worker, both of whom hail from different states but were united in their illicit endeavors. The list of those apprehended further includes Tarun Khanna and Harvinder Deol, both from Agra in Uttar Pradesh, Manish Jain from Jaipur, Rajasthan, and others with various occupations ranging from gas stove dealership to tailoring, each playing a role in the betting operation.
The arrests shine a light on the pervasive issue of illegal betting in sports, particularly cricket, which holds a place of significant cultural importance in India and beyond. The Delhi Police's successful dismantling of this network not only disrupts a substantial illegal betting operation but also sends a strong message about the legal consequences of such activities.
This crackdown serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat illegal gambling, which can have far-reaching effects on the integrity of sports. By taking down networks such as the one led by Raju Vaishnav, authorities are working to maintain the fairness and integrity of sporting events that millions enjoy.

Himansh Verma Fraud ED Seizes ₹91.80 Crore Assets in Bank Scam Case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached immovable and movable assets valued at ₹91.80 crore belonging to Bharat Bomb, Shankar Lal Khandelwal, and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with a massive bank fraud case involving Syndicate Bank (now Canara Bank).
Fraudulent Acquisition of Properties Across Rajasthan
The confiscated assets include agricultural land, plots, shops, offices, flats, and bungalows located in Jaipur, Udaipur, and Shri Ganganagar districts of Rajasthan. The ED has also frozen balances in several bank accounts linked to the accused.
The investigation stems from charges filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), New Delhi, against officials of the former Syndicate Bank and private individuals.
How the Fraud Unfolded
Between 2011 and 2016, Bharat Bomb, a Chartered Accountant based in Udaipur, orchestrated a complex fraud scheme in collaboration with Syndicate Bank officials, leading to a loss of ₹1,267.79 crore for the bank.
The ED revealed that the proceeds of the crime were funneled through a series of layered and complex financial transactions, a process known as placement, layering, and integration. These funds were then invested in the acquisition of real estate and properties under the names of Bharat Bomb, his family members, associates, employees, and fictitious entities. Real estate projects such as Om Ananda, Udai Residency, and Everest Ashiyana in Udaipur were among the beneficiaries of the laundered money.
Assets Attached in Udaipur, Jaipur, and Beyond
The ED disclosed that immovable properties worth ₹59 crore in Udaipur and ₹10 crore in Jaipur were among the attached assets. This is in addition to earlier provisional attachment orders for assets worth ₹386.58 crore and the seizure of ₹2.25 crore in demand drafts. With the latest attachment, the total value of seized assets in this case now stands at ₹478.38 crore.
Prosecution Filed Against Key Accused
The ED has filed a prosecution complaint under the PMLA against 81 individuals, including the key accused Bharat Bomb, his associates Vineet Jain, Mahendra Meghwal, Vipul Kaushik, and builder Shankar Lal Khandelwal. Others named in the case include Anoop Bartaria, Himansh Verma, and several bank officials. The case is currently under further investigation by the ED.
This significant action highlights the ED’s intensified crackdown on large-scale financial fraud and money laundering activities, shedding light on the deep nexus between professionals, bank officials, and real estate ventures.

My skydiving experience:
Explore with me My skydiving experience was nothing short of exhilarating! As I stood at the edge of the airplane door, heart racing, the reality of what I was about to do hit me. The instructor gave the signal, and before I could think twice, we leaped into the vast open sky. The initial free fall was an adrenaline rush like no other — the wind rushing past, the earth far below, and the sensation of pure weightlessness. For those few seconds, it felt like time stood still.
As the parachute deployed, the intensity of the fall transformed into a peaceful glide. The view was breathtaking: endless blue skies above and a patchwork of green fields and towns below. It was surreal, almost like floating in a dream. I felt an overwhelming sense of freedom and excitement.
Once we landed, my legs were a little shaky, but the feeling of accomplishment and joy was unparalleled. Skydiving pushed me beyond my comfort zone and gave me an unforgettable perspective on fear, thrill, and courage. I now understand why people are so passionate about it — there’s truly nothing like that first leap from the plane!
1. Slow down
Explore with me the 1 tip to keep in mind while traveling. It takes time and some know-how to successfully navigate in India. This is not a place for hurried travel. Don’t try and see as much as you can; that is not the right approach. It’s tiring to travel in India, and the object should be to experience it, not to check things off a list.
As a general rule, for every two weeks you are in India, pick one region. For a one-month trip, just pick two regions — say, two weeks in Rajasthan and two weeks in Kerala. You can even sit in one place and still not miss anything. No matter what, if you are in India, you will experience India.
Likewise, accept that things will not go as planned. Cultivate the philosophy that things happen the way they are supposed to, not the way they are planned. This attitude can lead to the most marvelous adventures.
3. Be careful who you trust
Explore with me the 3 tip to keep in mind while traveling. Having said that it’s a good idea to be open, a healthy level of skepticism also comes in really handy in India. There are many con men there, especially in the travel and hospitality sector. They have a sixth sense for first-time visitors and will try and take advantage.
So, learn the prices by asking locals and other travelers before negotiating with auto-rickshaw drivers and market vendors. Don’t believe drivers — or random people you come across at airports, train stations, and tourist attractions — who tell you things such as your hotel burned down, or the train you want was canceled.
Often, an opportunity to make money off of you will spur creative tactics, and some of these scams can easily catch you off guard. Once, I was looking for a new iPhone case and the vendor showed me one and told me it was made by Apple. But a close look revealed four spelling mistakes in one short sentence engraved inside the case.
4. Practice safe travel
Explore with me the 4 tip to keep in mind while traveling .India has a reputation as a daunting travel destination, especially for women. However, I have spent many years in India as a female solo traveler, and though I have been uncomfortable, I have never felt really unsafe or threatened. Reported crimes against tourists are relatively rare, but harassment, staring, pickpocketing, and getting ripped off are common.
There are also anecdotal reports of women being molested, especially in busy, crowded places. Follow basic precautions and safe travel strategies, and use common sense in India.
Here are several safety travel tips (please read my top tips for women traveling in India for more details):
Buy a local SIM card so that you can make local calls and stay in touch.
Research carefully where you want to go, ensuring it is an area frequented by other travelers, with good infrastructure and hotels.
Plan your travel so you don’t arrive late at night; travel during daylight hours only.
Be careful when posting to social media, so that you are not revealing your current location.
Stay alert to your surroundings, and keep a close eye on your handbag and luggage.
Keep the Tourist Helpline number handy and call if you need any assistance: 1–800–111363.
5. Try a small group tour
Explore with me the 5 tip to keep in mind while traveling. For your first time in India, try taking a small group or custom tour to help you get your feet wet. My company, India for Beginners, was founded to help women travel safely and well in India. We offer a few small group tours, but we specialize in creating custom tours and providing a high level of personal service, such as meeting travelers at the airport and assigning a tour manager who is available 24/7. We hold your hand in India!
6. Take the train
Explore with me the 6 tip to keep in mind while traveling. Taking a train in India is a great experience and should not be missed. However, you need some basic knowledge about the classes and the trains. You may not want to dive into sleeper class or general class immediately; I would recommend 2AC (second class with air conditioning) or CC (chair car). Or even 1AC (first class with air conditioning) or EC (executive chair car).
Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains are among the best in India, so try and book one of these. Overnight trains can be a problem because they don’t clean the toilets at night, so keep that in mind when you book.
7. Eat the food
Explore with me the 7 tip to keep in mind while traveling. India is one of the world’s great culinary destinations, and first-time visitors should not shy away from trying all the delicious cuisine on offer, even street food. Some of the famous Indian items you shouldn’t miss are masala chai, sweet lassi, biryani, pakoras, dosas, and sweets such as gulab jamun and kheer.
It’s hard to avoid getting sick in India, though, because you never know when a tainted item will cross your plate. It could be at a street stall or a five-star restaurant. However, you can reduce the chances of getting sick by following these basic rules:
Drink filtered or bottled water only.
Watch for undistilled water in ice or sauces.
Avoid salad and other raw food unless you can peel it (such as an orange or banana).
Eat only food that is freshly cooked.
Look for busy stalls and restaurants with high turnover.
8. Get a local SIM card
Explore with me the 8 tip to keep in mind while traveling.Everything in India runs on WhatsApp, one-time password (OTP) verification, and text messages. Because of this, you need a local number. To do so, get a local SIM at the airport when you arrive. Still, you may have trouble paying for things online with a foreign credit card, as India requires OTP verification, and getting registered with Indian Railways so you buy train tickets online is nearly impossible.
9. Remember where you are
“Explore with me India is changing fast but is still a traditional society. It’s best to learn about its cultures and etiquette and err on the side of caution
For example, unless you’re on the beach in Goa, it’s wise to wear modest clothing in India. Long, loose, and flowing are key for dressing for the climate and the culture.
It’s also best to be very respectful, especially with regard to the myriad religions. And be aware that genders relate differently in India, and overfriendliness can be misconstrued. Be polite, but with strangers, and especially those working in the hospitality sector, it’s usually best to dial back effusive friendliness.
10. Follow the seasons
Explore with me Weather and the season matter in India. It’s incredibly hot almost everywhere in May and June, the monsoon season is July to August, and it’s surprisingly cold in north India in winter, December to February. Do some research and find out the best places to visit in India by season.
So, when it’s cold in north India, head down to tropical Kerala or Goa and hit the beach. In the heat of summer, check out Ladakh, a high desert plateau that sometimes seems otherworldly. Note: Fall is festival season, so you can experience Durga Puja in Kolkata, Diwali in Jaipur, or the Camel Fair in Pushkar

by Subhash Chandra Agrawal Presently India is placed at poor 126th place in World Happiness Index out of 143 countries of the world, which is a cause of serious concern where even war-ridden Ukraine, Pakistan and other neighboring countries of India are placed better than in India. Main aspect for such poor ranking is where proverb “Justice delayed is Justice Denied” very well fits for helpless Indians seen crowded in courts for want of justice. The oldest pending The Berhampore Bank case filed on 31.01.1951 could finally be settled in January 2023 after long 72 years. There are about five crore cases pending in Indian courts. With average house-hold size taken as about 4.5 members per family, a substantial percentage of total Indian population is leading a highly tensed life flushing time and money like water in courts and advocates. It is noteworthy that number of court-cases in developed countries is far less and thus accounting for a brilliant World Happiness Index. Main cause for such large number of court-cases is Perjury where it has become a usual tradition to speak lie in Indian courts and to file false affidavits with extremely low conviction-rate making wrong-doers worriless with no fear of law leading to a high crime-rate. On the contrary, conviction-rate in developed countries exceeds even 90-percent with Japan touching an ideal 99-percent thus having very low crime-rate. System should be so reformed that lawyers themselves may not take cases which are apparently based on lies. Necessary changes should be done in recently introduced three new Acts namely Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam whereby judges at all levels from lower courts to Supreme Court may themselves be empowered to take cognizance and action on false documents submitted in the courts apart from ordering punishment for those having attested documents without proper verification. Litigants should be fearful while lying in courts. If some stringent law on Perjury is legislated in India, more and more litigants will resort to plea-bargaining thus drastically cutting down number of court cases say to about 20-percent of the existing court-cases with ensured fast justice say even within a year. A cooling period of say three months can be provided to litigants and advocates to withdraw false documents already filed in courts. Supreme Court in the matter “Swaran Singh versus State of Punjab” {(2000) 5 SCC 668) observed “Perjury has also become a way of life in the law courts. A trial Judge knows that the witness is telling a lie and is going back on his previous statement, yet he does not wish to punish him or even file a complaint against him. This deters him from filing the complaint…” A stringent law on Perjury can be beneficial for lawyers too where legal profession will gain enhanced reputation and trust amongst the commoners. Only serious aspirants will join law-courses creating demand for quality lawyers due to higher stakes with introduction of success fees as in advanced countries. There will be shift of young lawyers from court-rooms to business-houses for ensuring legal compliances which will further reduce court-cases. Rajasthan High Court had to once direct action against two Oath Commissioners having attested an affidavit while the applicant was out of the country. Such an illegal practice is quite common when usually Oath Commissioners and Notary Public fulfill formality of attesting documents without verifying the person or signature whose signatures are to be attested. Time has come to abolish the totally outdated and useless practice of having Oath-Commissioners and Notary Public who are mostly in malpractice of charging fees much in excess than fixed by the government. Many fake Oath Commissioners and Notary Public have also emerged who sign after putting rubber-stamp in name of Oath Commissioner and Notary Public without noting details in the register which is mandatory to be kept by them.
Instead power of attestation should be given to every registered lawyer. This will induce at least some accountability on lawyers too when they will be attesting for their clients. Power of attestation should also be given to layers, chartered-accountants, medical-practitioners, officers of government and public-sector-undertakings and other such responsible categories of persons. Station-House-Officers (SHOs) of police-stations who presently do not have such powers, may be authorized and duty-bound to free-of-cost attest documents of those who do not have easy access to authorities mentioned above. It is high time that a study may be conducted on judicial-system of developed countries where case-disposal rate is exemplary high, and necessary reforms may be urgently undertaken to ensure justice within a year or so. Adjournments in court-cases may be exception rather than a practice as at present. This is despite the fact that several Division Benches of Supreme Court including the one comprising of Justices RV Ravindran and JM Panchal in January 2009 have observed and rightly too of the bitter reality that at times those having taken ex-party stay-orders seeking frequent adjournments ultimately lose the cases. Even the then Vice President Hamid Ansari once also desired liberal adjournments in courts need to be taken seriously by the judiciary for reforms within. Supreme Court also in the case Shiv Cotex vs Tirgun Auto observed that it is sad, but true, that the litigants seek and the courts grant adjournments at the drop of the hat further adding that adjournments have grown like cancer corroding the entire body of the justice delivery system. It should be made compulsory for all judges from Supreme Court to trial-courts to record reason for recusal from the case on the file. Moreover, any such recusal should be informed immediately on setting up the bench or listing of such a case before a judge so that a new bench may be there for hearing without requiring any postponement of the hearing. A judge of Delhi High Court once recused herself from hearing a case where she herself issued notice to former President Pranab Mukerji after admitting a writ filed by some individual urging some contents of the book authored by the former President to be deleted. At times judges of higher courts have written to sitting Chief Justice of India about pressure and influence especially also from politicians. Making it compulsory to give reasons for recusal will prevent pressure and influence on judges. This system apart from being a crucial judicial reform, will further tend to reduce litigation-period due to adjournment because of recusal by any judge. Long summer vacations in courts were designed by erstwhile British rulers to save British judges in India from severe hot weather of this country and also to facilitate them to visit their homeland in England. This costly facility unfortunately continues in free India even after 77 years of independence, that too with long pendency of court-cases. Long-pending recommendation of Law Commission for scrapping long court-vacations should be implemented. Courts should adopt normal government-calendars for holidays abolishing system of week-long vacations for religious festivals apart from long winter and summer vacations. Bringing court-vacations at par with government-offices will further reduce pending court-cases in India. Writer is Guinness World Record Holder for writing most letters and RTI Consultant
