The Amazon's Ashaninka tribe restored their territory. Now they aim to change the region

It was just before dawn when the Ashaninka people, wearing long, tunic-like dresses, began singing traditional songs while playing drums and other instruments. The music drifted through Apiwtxa village, which had welcomed guests from Indigenous communities in Brazil and neighboring Peru, some having traveled three days. As the sun rose, they moved beneath the shadow of a huge mango tree.
The dancing, which would last until the following morning, marked the end of the annual celebration recognizing the Ashaninka territory along the winding Amonia River in the western Amazon. The multi-day, nearly around-the-clock festivities included the ritual of drinking ayahuasca, the sacred psychedelic brew, archery tournaments, climbing towering acai palm trees and face-painting with red dye.
What was once a gathering to commemorate the Ashaninka has evolved into a showcase of what they have done: the village’s self-sufficiency, which comes from growing crops and protecting its forest, is now a model for an ambitious project to help 12 Indigenous territories in western Amazon, amounting to 640,000 hectares (1.6 million acres), about the size of the U.S. state of Delaware.
In November, the Organization of Indigenous People of the Jurua River, known by the Portuguese acronym OPIRJ, secured $6.8 million in support from the Amazon Fund, the world’s largest initiative to combat rainforest deforestation. With Apiwtxa as the model, the grant is geared toward improving Indigenous land management with an emphasis on food production, cultural strengthening and forest surveillance.
“We are expanding everything that we did at Apiwxta to an entire region,” said Ashaninka and OPIRJ leader Francisco Piyãko, speaking in front of his home in Apiwtxa. “This is not only about implementing a project. What is at stake is cultural change. This is essential to protect life, the territory and its peoples.”

Deep dives into folklore: Brazilian folklore
Brazilian folklore is a dynamic and intricate representation of the nation's history, where diverse cultural influences, including Indigenous, African, and European traditions, have converged over centuries. This amalgamation has given rise to a rich and unique folklore that reflects the complex heritage of Brazil.
Brazilian folklore finds its origins in the blending of Indigenous, African, and European cultures that unfolded during centuries of colonization. The collision of these diverse cultural elements gave rise to a unique and syncretic folklore that manifests in a multitude of rituals, legends, and oral traditions.
Indigenous contributions are evident in the reverence for nature and the presence of mythical creatures like the Curupira, a forest guardian with backward-facing feet. African influences introduced deities, spirits, and vibrant folklore traditions such as Capoeira, a martial art with roots in African dance. European folklore, particularly Portuguese, contributed elements like the Saci-Pererê, a mischievous one-legged creature similar to the European leprechaun.
Curupira: The Curupira is a guardian spirit of the forest, often depicted with fiery red hair and backward-facing feet. It protects the flora and fauna of the Amazon rainforest, punishing those who harm the natural world.
Saci-Pererê: A mischievous figure with one leg, the Saci-Pererê is often portrayed as a prankster who delights in playing tricks on people. Despite its mischievous nature, it is not entirely malevolent and can be appeased with offerings.
Iara: Iara, also known as the Mother of Waters, is a seductive mermaid-like figure residing in rivers. Legend has it that Iara lures men with her enchanting beauty, drawing them into the depths of the water.
Exu: Borrowed from Afro-Brazilian religions like Candomblé and Umbanda, Exu is a trickster deity associated with crossroads, communication, and both good and bad fortune. Representing the duality of existence, Exu is a vital figure in Afro-Brazilian cosmology.
Brazilian folklore holds immense cultural significance, serving as a repository of shared identity and heritage. It connects communities across the vast expanse of the country, fostering a sense of unity and pride in cultural diversity. The folklore traditions are often passed down through oral storytelling, music, dance, and religious ceremonies, enriching the cultural landscape of Brazil.
The influence of Brazilian folklore extends beyond traditional storytelling, permeating various aspects of Brazilian culture, including literature, music, art, and festivals. Renowned Brazilian authors like Jorge Amado and cultural movements like the Tropicalia music movement have drawn inspiration from folklore, infusing it with contemporary relevance.
Moreover, Brazilian folklore has become a source of inspiration for international audiences, contributing to the global fascination with mythical beings and supernatural tales. The ubiquity of these figures in popular culture serves as a testament to the enduring and universal appeal of Brazilian folklore.
Brazilian folklore is a testament to the intricate interplay of cultural influences that have shaped the nation's identity. Through its mythical figures, oral traditions, and syncretic rituals, Brazilian folklore serves as a living, evolving expression of the country's rich heritage. As Brazil continues to evolve and embrace its diverse cultural tapestry, the folklore remains a vibrant and integral part of the nation's collective narrative, inviting both Brazilians and the world to explore the enchanting realms of its mythical beings and age-old stories.

Exploring Vanuatu The Best Time to Visit this Pacific Paradise

Vanuatu, an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, is a dream destination for travelers seeking pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and vibrant culture. However, choosing the right time to visit can greatly enhance your experience. From weather patterns to cultural events, several factors play a role in determining the best time to explore this tropical haven.
Weather Considerations: Vanuatu experiences a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the wet season (November to April) and the dry season (May to October). While both seasons offer unique experiences, the dry season is often favored by travelers due to its sunny days, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall. However, if you don't mind occasional showers and lush greenery, the wet season can also be a beautiful time to visit, especially for budget-conscious travelers.
Peak Season vs. Off-Peak Season: The peak tourist season in Vanuatu coincides with the dry season, particularly from June to August when the weather is at its finest. During this time, you can expect higher accommodation rates and crowds at popular tourist attractions. For a more tranquil experience and potential cost savings, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (April to May and September to October) when the weather is still pleasant, and tourist numbers are lower.
Special Events and Festivals: Immerse yourself in Vanuatu's rich cultural heritage by timing your visit with one of its vibrant festivals. The Vanuatu Agricultural Show in May showcases the country's agricultural bounty, while the Naghol Land Dive in April offers a thrilling spectacle where locals dive from wooden towers with vines tied to their ankles. Additionally, Independence Day celebrations on July 30th feature traditional dances, feasts, and music, providing insight into Vanuatu's history and traditions.
Diving and Snorkeling Conditions: Vanuatu boasts some of the world's most pristine dive sites, including the SS President Coolidge wreck and the famous Blue Hole. For optimal underwater visibility and calm seas, plan your diving or snorkeling adventures during the dry season when the ocean is typically clearer. However, even during the wet season, many dive sites remain accessible and offer unique underwater encounters, such as the chance to witness migratory species and coral spawning events.
Wildlife Encounters: Nature enthusiasts will delight in Vanuatu's diverse wildlife, including rare birds, marine life, and endemic species. To maximize wildlife sightings, consider visiting during the dry season when many species are more active and easier to spot. Birdwatchers, in particular, can enjoy the presence of migratory birds during this time, including the majestic white terns that flock to the islands.
Conclusion: Best Time to Visit Vanua tuseek sun-drenched beaches, cultural immersion, or thrilling outdoor adventures, Vanuatu offers something for every traveler. By considering factors such as weather patterns, peak tourist seasons, special events, and outdoor activities, you can plan your visit to this Pacific paradise at the best time to suit your preferences and interests. So pack your bags, embark on an unforgettable journey, and discover the timeless beauty of Vanuatu.

Long Ge Headcanons
Heyo @aurora-ze-aquarius and @leiasky,
I've wanted to delve into Long Ge's personality both within the Cars 2 canon and the WGP spies au
Cars 2 Headcanons
Long Ge is considered a bit of a latecomer to the racing world and wasn't taken seriously until a few years leading up to the WGP
When he is not racing, he can be found practicing kung fu (Choi Li Fut/ Cai Li Fo in Cantonese) with a variety of weapons including fans, hook swords ,throwing knives , spears, chain darts and claws on his hands and feet just to spice things up. He on some occasions sparred with Shu Todoroki to test new moves and tactics.
His favorite food is Hong Kong style Chow Mein (he eats more of a vegetarian diet)
He is an ardent fan of danmei novels and anime/donghua and can be found out of season at various conventions searching for keychains, figurines, commissioning artwork, and some occasions cosplaying in full detailed hanfu with the exquisite long hair as a xianxia cultivator.
He has two pet lovebirds (A peach-faced lovebird named Yao and a violet masked lovebird named Kuro, famously/infamously known as the "gay lovebirds") both are male and bonded to each other and photobomb Zhang's selfies at home. *Bonus points to whomever can guess the origin of their names (hint. their names came a certain international-set anime subfandom)*
He has also make jokes of wanting to keep a leucistic cobra as a pet, but his racing career keeps him too busy and contents himself with a hand-crocheted 6ft long leucistic Chinese cobra stuffed plush, complete with expandable hood.
His music tastes are a bit all over the place, the majority of songs he listens to are C-pop, K-pop, J-Rock and traditional Guqin pieces and covers. His favorite artist to listen to is Zhou Shen, now he is testing out Marblue and ZuyaNaxi as other favorites. Here are a few songs on his playlist that he listens too.

WGP Spies Au
It also doesn't probably ease his reputation when said songs are on constant repeat if the Ghost Festival or Halloween is on full swing at the GSO labs. On those days, he goes full ham on the mad scientist routine.
Also an unspoken rule at the GSO is to never accept any offers of cigarettes, gum, food, or drink from Long Ge or his assistants. Results are varied on how much he spiked it or what kind of poison he slipped in it.
Rigorous tests are required to check for every narcotic, venom, poison and general tampering of said gifts, or even assuming that he is testing an unholy new concoction in which case, have high hopes that Long Ge managed to make an antidote beforehand.
He does horticulture and botany as a hobby (poisonous plants still manage to slip through, Zhang-ge's students and underlings note with varying emotions)
Dr. Long Ge is the name that most of the GSO students and staff call him at work (he earned that Ph.D. in venomology and he's going to flaunt it). Zhang Wei Long is reserved for fellow agents and the upper echelons of the GSO (cue full name yelling as Dr. Long is dragged for yet another debugging of the Gonggong virus in Max's lab)
Squirrel shaped mandarin fish is a necessity for getting Zhang out of his lab (like a cryptid) to socialize in balls, conferences and parties (like setting peanuts for the birds). Most of the time he virtually attending meetings for debriefing from his lab, just to keep eyes and ears out for potential hackers.
A secret dream project set aside is building robot snake drones that have camaras and audio bugs implanted inside to spy in the more remote locations (such as open seas, deserts, and rainforests, also same principle as the Spy Cams in nature documentaries) and act like in nature to avoid suspicion. So far there are only sketches and schematics made for a sea snake drone, a rattlesnake drone and a cobra drone.
Long Ge was bitten numerous times in the lab by a variety of venomous snakes and his lab is conveniently located next to the hospital. He still has phantom twitches and aches of residual nerve damage from the various venoms and antivenins injected into his body.
Another hobby he loves is mixology and barkeeping. Not to conceal more poison and drugs in pre-existing drinks for the victims, but also to create new drinks to hide more poisons and drugs and suss out information from patrons . His most recently created drink is the one named after his daunting final test: The Poisoner's Folly. Made from absinthe, blue curacao, mint liquor, a dash of simple syrup and for extra fun (on Long Ge's part) a droplet of snake venom(mild venom from a false water cobra, not that will reassure people). The mocktail of Poisoner's Folly replaces the blue curacao with blue raspberry syrup and a base of mint soda with a dash of lemon juice and muddled licorice root with no venom.
