Electric Lights on Strings
Tumblr media
As Alastor’s scathing smile stretches alongside his lanky limbs, Angel tops off Vaggie’s eggnog with a healthy glug of whiskey. “I wouldn’t blame ya for saying I told you so,” he says. “I’m gonna. Hey, Charlie!”
Only Charlie could stand between the Radio Demon and the King of Hell, pointedly dismissing their eldritch devolution and Angel’s interjections with a pout not even Alastor can resist for long. Vaggie has her spear in hand as a precaution but she doubts it’ll be necessary with this crowd.
“Now, Alastor, Dad,” Charlie hedges, clasping her hands in front of her chest, “Christmas is about getting along. Right, Vaggie?”
Most of Vaggie’s recollections of Christmas involve going to parties with Adam, drinking until even Heaven wasn’t enough to keep her stomach from turning, rubbing elbows with important angels, and trying to keep her head on straight. One year, she thinks she actually met the birthday boy. He turned her wine to water, if her memory serves correctly, and then transformed her black dress to red and green to match the party theme before disappearing back into the crowd.
“Uh, sure, yeah.”
Charlie grins when their eyes meet. “Thanks, babe. Soooo, it’s not very festive to, like, have a super powerful battle in the lobby over which lights to use. And,” she nods toward Niffty, who’s currently tangled in both Lucifer’s rainbow string lights and Alastor’s old-fashioned white line of bulbs, “it’s totally not fair to the staff! They’re trying really, really hard to decorate.”
Everyone has contributed something: Husk wrapped tinsel around the bartop and stools, Angel hung mistletoe in every possible location, Sir Pentious and Cherri brought in the tree, the Egg Bois covered the ground in fake snow, and Niffty put wreaths on all the doors. Charlie has taken it all in with such wonder that Vaggie can’t stand to burst her bubble. In Hell, Christmas is mostly about seasonal vape flavors and porn campaigns–nothing like Heaven’s month-long celebration. The nostalgic, rose-colored memories from life Angel accidentally shared over breakfast last week were enough to convince Charlie that they all need a proper celebration somewhere between Heaven and Hell’s traditions.
“Charlie,” Alastor says primly once he drops back into his usual form, “if you insist on defiling the hotel with decorations for this” he flicks a hand, “holiday, I implore you not to use those ridiculous neon eyesores.”
“The only eyesore here is your coat!” Lucifer snaps.
“Guys, come on!” Charlie interjects again. “Can’t we compromise?”
At the same time that Lucifer reluctantly agrees, Alastor scoffs and sinks down into the floor, though Vaggie notes his silhouette draw up at the front windows with a red-eyed stare. Rainbow lights it is, then. She sets her eggnog, untouched, on the table to free Niffty. All the decorations just appeared when she was in Heaven, not a speck out of place, and leaving the haphazard efforts of the hotel residents to feel more like a mockery than a comfort.
“Don’t worry, Niff,” Vaggie says as she unwinds the strings, “I’ll have you free in a second.”
“Aren’t you excited?”
She pauses. “Huh?”
“You seem sad,” answers Niffty, squirming to ‘help’ free her arms from the tangled Christmas lights. “Don’t you like Christmas?”
There’s no reason to, as far as Vaggie’s concerned, but she doesn’t want to dampen the mood when everyone is so excited for a taste of familiarity, a taste of home, after the decades they’ve spent in Hell. She can’t take this from them. Husk is smiling.
“Not my thing,” she says.
With a final flourish, Vaggie lifts Niffty from the lights and deposits her a couple feet away. The bug scuttles off into the shadows to continue decorating, leaving Vaggie to watch Lucifer conjure elegant strings of rainbow lights onto the tree, the walls, and the ceilings while mentally agreeing with Alastor that the colors are tacky. Then again, tacky is hardly out of place for the Hazbin Hotel.
Vaggie shores up a smile as she rejoins Charlie’s side, determined not to let her feelings get in the way of everyone else’s excitement.

Ayaka climbed up the rock to get a better view of the beach in the distance. Its colorful pools reflected the sunlight and made miniature rainbows dance across their watery surfaces. The large statues of the guards standing at attention were a sight to behold.
"Why did we eat over here? We're going to the Luhua pools, are we not?"
Yoimiya climbed after her. "Yep, there's a path to them just back there. We'll go in a minute."
"But not now?"
She smiled. "No, there's one little thing we need to do first."
"What is--" Yoimiya crashed into her, sending them both over the edge. "Yoim--"
She was cut off by water pouring into her mouth and nose. She choked and pushed away, clawing through the water for air. When she broke through the surface, she started coughing up water. Yoimiya surfaced beside her and laughed. Ayaka grabbed her shoulders and pushed her under. She came back up spitting out her own mouthful of water. They're both smiling. Ayaka was still holding her shoulders. Yoimiya wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her closer. They leaned in and--
She shivered. The water was cold and heightened the chill in the air. Yoimiya let go of her, and they swam back to the shore. Ayaka reached for one of the towels, but Yoimiya stopped her.
"Take off your wet clothes first. We can leave them here to dry while we go to the pools."
Ayaka sighed, hurriedly taking off everything but her swimsuit and wrapping herself up in the towel. They laid their clothes out on some flat rocks near their picnic blanket and headed out on the path.
-----------------------------------------
This is a scrapped idea from my ayamiya story. I cleaned it up a little bit, but it's basically the first draft. Also, I went into the game to test it out and make sure there was a place near Luhua Pool where you could dive into the water without dying or not landing in the water. It's not as cliffy as I would have liked, but it's what I found. It's behind the houses on the road between the city and the hotel. I think the houses were a location used in Yelan's story quest?
I'm so sad that I have to cut this date because I love it, and it was one of the first ones I thought up when I was developing the story idea. "What if Ayaka and Yoimiya went cliff diving? What would happen? It would be so cute, that's what would happen." Unfortunately, I have another date that does essentially the same thing for the story, and this one is easier to replace. Plus, when I realized the fic was being set in the winter, the water activities seemed a little less feasible? (I was just going to make the pools heated, either naturally or with human intervention, but that's a little over the top) r.i.p. cliff diving date, r.i.p.

In addition to its beautiful beaches, Mirissa is renowned for being one of Sri Lanka’s top locations for whale viewing at this time of year. In addition to enjoying bonfires and music on the beach on New Year’s Eve, you may schedule whale-watching trips in the days before January 1.
Because of its natural beauty and joyous festivities, Mirissa is a great place to take pictures of animals and lively party scenes. You can showcase life in this seaside village and give your portfolio a distinctive touch by taking early morning photos of a fisherman returning with their haul against the backdrop of sunrise.
Anuradhapura — Historical Significance
For those interested in history and culture, Anuradhapura provides a fascinating look into the evolution of Sri Lankan New Year celebrations. Numerous archeological sites in this ancient metropolis provide insight into the history of earlier civilizations.
Local customs are frequently observed at these historical sites during New Year’s celebrations, offering photographers a rare chance to capture customs amid ancient ruins. Pulp Storytime #22: Junkie’s Rainbow!
On the shores of paradise, they find their own twisted bliss! Like the adventure? Read it here! Players make the story. Especially if all week your players are going to include a private investigator, reporter, and a well-connected local… and none of them show up. But I think I’ll explain the mystery first. Gloomy November, Honolulu, 1935. CPO Alan Krope makes a deal, unwittingly, with a Japanese spy, Ito Takagi. Sell some excess morphine from the naval hospital and get super rich. Of course, the rest of the navy hears about this, and although some are punished by excessive rotations, they learn to take advantage. Kropke’s younger brother Byron uses his time defending the leper colony of Molokai to strike a deal. Hooch and skin mags for the lepers, they use some of that beautiful island to grow drugs, which are shipped back on Navy boats. Of course, flooding Honolulu with drugs is unsustainable… Back to our heroes. Lord Simon and Connie Johnson, best pitcher in the Negro league, are arguing at poolside. The lifeguard is taking some time off… Trying to bust down Florence Zee’s door. The lifeguard’s sister Gertrude is in bed with the Aussie songstress. SPLASH! A dopesick tourist stumbles into the pool. Connie jumps in and Lord Simon throws them a life preserver. Meanwhile, being a gentlewoman, Florence tries to sneak out the window… and loses her footing, stumbling onto a palm tree and sliding into the pool. SPLASH! Now, despite a lack of investigatory talent, the players leverage their skills to start solving the mystery. A few mishaps occur: *Miss Johnson accidentally earns the affection of a navy drug dealer. *Lord Simon discovers his old mentor, who had abandoned him years ago, is staying in the same hotel. *Florence keeps running into her latest beau’s psycho sister, since they are technically coworkers. *The group borrows a boat to investigate Molokai, only to have it shot to pieces. (They realized too late that none of them had any boating experience.) *Lord Simon’s mentor steals “The Eye of Pele” from the hotel and replaces it with a glass replica… Minutes before Devika buys it for Simon as a gift. ——— The group discerns Takagi is a spy who likely has a submarine. (This is conveyed by a drug-fueled rant from CPO Kropke. Lord Simon plays dumb, half legitimately, to uncover new details.) That means they need help from the secretary of the navy. They built up a good relationship, and to secure a favor, they have to do is let him score a base hit off of Connie. … and she strikes him out in front of the entire Pacific command. Florence appeals to the military police, our heroes infiltrates the drug ring (who were smuggling through with the lava tubes), and try and catch the bad guy… But he escapes to his motorboat. The MPs and the sailors are fighting, when Connie grabs some obsidian spheres and hurls them into the spy’s boat. It sinks… And sinks… and disappears beneath the waves. Strike three, he’s out. Again, it’s all party comp.

Favourite Place
Liz Lochhead
We would be snaking up Loch Lomond, the road narrow and winding after the turn at Tarbert, and we’d be bending branches as we slid through the green and dripping overhang of the trees. All the bickering over the packing, and the – as usual – much, much later-than-we’d-meant-to leaving, all that falling from us, our moods lifting, lightening, becoming our good mood the more miles we put between our freed and weekend selves and Glasgow.
Driving in the dark means: slot in another CD without even looking at what it is, another any-old-silver-disc from the zippered case that, when you reminded me, I’d have quickly stuffed far too full and randomly, then jammed it, last minute, into the top of my rucksack. Golden oldies, yours or mine, whose favourite? Anyway, the music would spool us through Tyndrum, past the shut Real Food Café where other days we like to stop, and over moonscape Rannoch Moor to the moonlit majesty of Glencoe, over the bridge at Ballachulish, past Corran with the ferry stilled and the loch like glass; we’d be wriggling along Loch Linnhe then straighten up past the long strip of darkened lochside Big hotels and their Vacancies or No Vacancies signs to 30 mph Fort William – Full-Of-Rain-Town-With-Its-Limitless-Litres-In-A-Mist! – we’d shout it out and we’d be honouring a long ago and someone else’s family pass-the-time-car- journey game we never even played, but Michael, proud of his teenage wordsmith son, once told us about – and it has stuck. We’d be speeding up now, taking the bend’s wide sweep as we bypass the sleeping town, making for the second-last turn-off: Mallaig and The Road To The Isles. And you’d say, ‘Last thirty miles, Lizzie, we’ll be there by midnight.’
The always longest fifteen miles from Glenfinnan to Lochailort and a wee cheer at the last turn, down past the big house and the fish farm, beyond the lay-by – full of travellers’ ramshackle vans now the yellow’s on the broom again – our eyes peeled now for the white-painted stone so we’ll not miss the overgrown entrance to the field of caravans.
There would be that sigh of always glad-to-see our old van still standing, opening the door, the sniffing – no dampness, no mice… I’d be unloading the first cool bags of food, while you’d be round the van’s side, down in the mud turning the stopcock for the water, fixing the gas – and soon, breathing a big sigh, laughing in relief at how that huge stag that had suddenly filled the windscreen a mile back stopping our hearts as – ho! – we’d shouted our alarm – had somehow astonishingly leapt free, was gone, and no harm done, we’d be lighting candles, pouring a dram, drinking the first cup of tea from the old black and white teapot.
And tonight the sky would be huge with stars. Tomorrow there would be the distant islands cut out of sugar paper, or else cloud, the rain in great veils coming in across the water, the earliest tenderest feathering of green on the trees, mibbe autumn laying bare the birches stark white. There would be blood-red rowan berries, that bold robin eating from my plate again, or – for a week or two in May – the elusive, insistent cuckoo, or else the slow untidy flapping of the flight of the heron, the oil-black cormorant’s disappear-and-dive, shifts of sun, double or even treble rainbows. The waterfall would be a wide white plume or a thin silver trickle, depending… There would be bracken’s early unfurling or late summer’s heather pinking and purpling over, there’d be a plague of hairy caterpillars and the last drunken bees. Mibbe you’d nudge me, and hushed, again we’d watch that otter swim to shore on New Year’s Day with a big fish in its mouth, emerge so near us on the flat rocks we wouldn’t dare to breathe as we’d watch it, unconcerned, oblivious, make a meal of eating it before our eyes. Or it would be a late Easter this year and, everywhere along the roadside, the chrome-yellow straight-out-of-the-tube-and- laid-on-with-a-palette-knife brashness, the amazing coconut smell of the gorse.
But tonight you are three months dead and I must pull down the bed and lie in it alone. Tomorrow, and every day in this place these words of Sorley MacLean’s will echo through me: The world is still beautiful, though you are not in it. And this will not be a consolation but a further desolation.

HEART OF HAWAII
WHICH ISLAND WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Hello Travelers!
The American writer Henry Miller famously said, "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." Doesn't that quote capture Hawaii perfectly? The Aloha Spirit, literally meaning, "the presence of breath," is the philosophy of living with love, compassion and grace for others. This makes Hawaii the perfect environment to create meaningful memories with friends and family... no matter which (if not all) of her picture perfect islands you choose to experience. With that said, if you have Hawaii in mind for the winter holidays, now is time to be thinking about reserving your space for festive travel. Please get in touch soon, as availability is quickly becoming extremely limited for many popular warm-weather destinations.
OAHU: SNORKELING AT HANAUMA BAY
THE KAHALA HOTEL & RESORT
If you want to get acquainted with hundreds of tropical fish and marine life, no matter your snorkeling level, take a 20-minute transfer from The Kahala Hotel & Resort to the famous Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. “Hana" is the Hawaiian word for "Bay" and "Uma" refers to the curves of the indigenous canoes. The bay was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. It remained one of the premier destinations in Oahu, featuring majestic green sea turtles, vibrant parrotfish, and more. When you return to the resort, continue getting up close and personal with sea life at their private dolphin lagoon.
KAUAI: A HAWAII & SOUTH PACIFIC CRUISE
CRYSTAL CRUISES
Wrapped in magnificent beaches, draped in lush rainforest and kissed by translucent waters, the gem-like islands of Hawaii and the South Pacific have long been the treasured muses of great artists, captivating all with their serene natural beauty. On this journey of locales, you’ll pause in Kauai, better known by its well-deserved nickname, the "Garden Isle." Fewer people live here than on the larger neighboring islands, but Hawaiian residents and out-of-state visitors alike are attracted to its acclaimed beaches, rugged emerald-colored cliffs, cascading waterfalls and magnificent sandy shores. Secluded coves are found all along the island's irregular coastline and a luxuriant rainforest flourishes on the "wet" side of the island, Kauai being one of the wettest spots on earth.
LANAI & BEYOND: ISLAND HOPPING IN FIVE STAR LUXURY
FOUR SEASONS RESORTS HAWAII
Island hopping has never been more of a necessity when you have the opportunity to experience four distinctly unforgettable island settings with unparalleled Four Seasons luxury, cuisine and service. Furthest north, the authentic yet contemporary Oahu property is nestled in the upscale vacation community of Ko Olina, known for its gorgeous sunsets and lagoons. In Lanai, explore the rugged terrain of this unspoiled island on horseback or ATV before Maui takes you in with her lush tropical landscapes and prime views for epic whale watching. And lastly, the beautiful Hualalai property is a natural sanctuary set on the exclusive Kona-Kohala coast of The Big Island.
THE BIG ISLAND: LAVA & RAINBOW FALLS EXCURSION SHORETRIPS
If you love nature, history and drama, this 5 1/2 hour tour might be a perfect add-on for your Hawaiian adventure. Located in Hilo, Hawaii, Rainbow Falls (known in the Hawaiian language as “rainbow water”) is an 80 ft tall masterpiece where the Wailuku River rushes down into a large pool below. On sunny mornings, this natural phenomenon projects rainbows as it flows over a natural lava cave. From here, you will head down the older back roads of Hawaii through mango groves before arriving at the lava flow that caused an evacuation of the town of Pahoa in 2018. Although at first glance it can look slow moving and harmless, lava can be incredibly hard to contain. At Kaimu, you will have the chance to walk on old lava flows that covered what was once a small beach town with beautiful black sand beaches. Lastly, in one of the most unique spots on the island, you’ll see where lava once burst out of fissures onto Ohia trees, leaving fascinating lava molds.

The last Full day in Koh Yao Noi was a top ten day. Began with our usual mango and sticky rice, pancake or egg, and fruit smoothie. Then, we rode the scooter to the dock and met Don, the one of the owners of our hotel for our private island hopping tour. It was just the two of us with Don, a person who grew up on Koh Yao Noi, on his speedboat for our private island hopping tour, and he was taking us out to the islands we’d been looking at from our balcony for the past 4 days.
The first spot he took us to was a rock coming straight up out of the sea - we slowed down and took the boat right under the rocks with the stalactites coming right down over our heads. There were long tail fishing boats all around us, and I asked what they were catching. Don said “jellyfish!” Fisherman get 8-9 baht per catch. You can eat the giant pink jellyfish and they don’t sting, so he plucked one out of the water and handed it to me. He told us if you wash your hands with the salt water, it won’t sting at all, but if you wash your hands with freshwater it will be “like cat scratches,” and he has no idea why.
We set off for island number 2, and Don asked if we’d like to try snorkeling ! We found a couple of masks that fit and hopped in! He told us to swim through the rocks and he’d pull the boat to the other side. There were clown fish, angel fish, rainbow fish, a long pointed fish with a long tentacle/spear for a nose that looked like a mini narwhal (Don told me the name but I couldn’t quite understand what it was called), a black fish with big white checker spots, sea urchins, amazing different coral formations, jellyfish, and a bunch of stuff that I can’t begin to describe. Incredible!
Island number 3 was my personal favorite. Don slowed the boat down, and said “this is monkey island,” pulled out a loaf of white bread and threw a slice like a frisbee into the water. Within 2 seconds a monkey jumped off the rocks into the water, swam and ate the bread. His monkey friends followed. Don handed us the loaf of bread and we fed the monkeys - just like feeding ducks on the jersey shore. One of the monkeys got close enough the grab onto the side of the boat, and we started strategically throwing bread to get them to swim the other direction. Almost had a monkey on board! … before this island, we had no idea that monkeys could swim.
Island number 4 we pulled up to the beach, and hopped off. There was the most beautiful beach and this was the first time we’d seen other boats with tourists. There was a photo opportunity set up (we obliged), a little roped off area to swim, and even an ice cream stand. We felt incredibly fortunate to be able to be on our own schedule and not have to wait for the tour to leave, so once we had our photo, it was back on the boat for island 5 and 6 - more snorkeling!
The second snorkeling spot was the best, and the third was a huge drop off into the depths of the ocean! We looked down this giant ridge of coral into the depths of the abyss, and to be honest it was a little scary to see fish darting around at ease, and here we are - a couple of marshmallows floating around on the surface. We didn’t linger for too long here, we’ve seen the movie jaws.
Island number 7 was another tourist haven, Hong island. We rode through the interior lagoon on the boat, got out for a swim, and Don told us we could get out to walk up to the lookout point if we wanted to but had to pay the park fee. We looked at the lines of people walking to the top, and decided to keep boating around! The next island, similarly had tons of people but it was our lunch spot - we pulled up to a long floating dock, Don handed us our lunch basket and told us to take our time. We walked back through the rocks and found a picnic table to sit at. We had sliced watermelon, mangos, chicken and rice, water, coke, chips, and Allison snuck a couple of Chang’s in her purse! A perfect lunch! After lunch we walked on the beach, snapped a couple photos, read the sign to watch for falling coconuts, then walked back out to the dock, past the line of tourists waiting for their boat to arrive. I waved for Don, he saw us and scooped us up almost without breaking stride. It was amazing, and we started to feel like celebrities. I told Don, that island was amazing, and he said “just wait for the last one,” and we sped off.
It was a long ride on the boat for the final island, but pulled up and it was us and one other boat. I asked what the island was called, Don said “Nok, Nok” and I asked “who’s there?” When we hopped off, Don definitely told my joke to the other boater in Thai. This was just a tiny island with a perfect beach, and a lookout point. We hopped off, climbed up to the top which is marked as a 15 minute climb, and had the entire point to ourselves. After the climb we sat on the beach and shared a Coke. It was a perfect island tour.
Eventually we hopped back on the boat, and sped north along the coast of Koh Yao Noi, and realized we could point out everything on the island now after being here for just four days. Restaurants, other resorts *whispers* six senses, and beaches we’ve been to. We docked the boat, scootered back to our bungalow, and got ready for dinner at our favorite restaurant: the Kindee cafe, ordered the most expensive item on the menu: the full snapper. They gave us a little bowl of sliced peppers to try with the fish, and Allison threw 3 on her first bite, and paused immediately- it was really, REALLY, spicy. It gave us a 10 minute intermission from dinner, and Allison drinking Thai tea, eating plain rice, trying different sauces, anything and everything at the table before the spiciness subsided. …Then I ate one to see how bad it was. It was insanely spicy, but, simultaneously did not make either of us sweat. Just pure pain. I think this is the Thai spice we’ve been warned about. We asked the waitress what kind of pepper this was, and she shrugged “I don’t eat spicy.”
We finished dinner, walked to the shops to buy some souvenirs, and scootered home in the dark. A top ten all time day - maybe even top 5!

Saturday, June 17 - Misty Fjords
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We got up early as we made the turn into the Misty Fjords area. We were headed up an arm and an anchorage near the head of the fjord. This area has no glaciers as they retreated hundreds of years ago, and as a result the forest is more diverse, and this area has never been logged. On our way in, Misty Fjords certainly lived up to its name, with large amounts of fog lacing the mountains, and swirling currents on the water surface. Because of the narrowness of the fjords, we have had pilots on board since we left Sitka, and some times, as when we motored in place in Tracy Arm, there were actually two pilots on duty. Usually there are just pilots for navigation as we come into a port, so this is probably a hefty expense for all ships navigating in Alaska.
We reached our anchorage around 8, and we got ready for our last kayak outing. It was overcast and misty, and we hugged the shore to see all the interesting things at low tide. There were incredible waterfalls, and once again I will try to include them in a later post, since they are on my little camera and not my phone. There were no glaciers to see here, but there was still a lot of snow above us - later in the year the waterfalls will dwindle to a trickle. We kept hoping to see bears or other critters on shore, but there was only a brief glimpse of a mink or marten, and only a few birds, but the scenery was spectacular as we paddled to the end of the fjord. This area was designated a National Monument (under the Forest Service) and wilderness area in 1978, although the wilderness designation only covers the land or we wouldn't be here.
We had the Seabourn ship anchored nearby, but around a little bend, so that most of the time they were out of sight, and some sightseeing boats came in briefly, but were gone quickly. After we finished our paddle, we were the last Zodiac to do the kayak to boat to boat to ship exchange, so while we were waiting to unload, our Zodiac wrangler, who is one of the expedition team and an active birder, took us in near shore to see a flock of Barrow's Goldeneyes that had just landed. The Zodiac trips seem to see a little more wildlife than we do from the kayaks, but we are on the water much longer, and have a quiet, water's edge view.
When we got back to the ship, the sun started to break through the clouds and we went from Misty Fjords to Sunny Fjords. With the sun we could really see all the colors in the rocks, and we all enjoyed being on deck, with a Cornhole game to keep us occupied. Even the Captain played, since there was not much else going on. We were able to sail out a bit earlier than originally planned, which gave us time to watch the higher glacier sculpted valleys shine in the sunshine, and a passing mist give us a view of a rainbow.
Back in the main channel we passed New Eddystone Rock, an old volcanic plug. From a distance it looked really jagged, but up close that was mostly due to all the trees growing on it. It was getting towards low tide again, and it was obvious it wasn't just a single tall rock, but a larger island underneath which could be a real hazard. We passed by just before dinner, but soon afterwards the clouds closed in again and it got windy and cool on deck, and we were glad to go inside to a wonderful meal and an encore of our Entertainment Director Grace's opera program. She will be getting off the ship in Vancouver and our hotel manager presented her with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers (where did they come from, considering we are in the middle of nowhere?), and she was pretty overcome. It was a lovely way to end a great day.
We will only have about half a day in Prince Rupert tomorrow, but figure the stop is mainly so we don't have to worry about customs and immigration when we get to Vancouver. We have a short hike planned and would like to see a little of the town, but we'll see if the weather cooperates. It will be our last stop before Vancouver.

I've Never Been To Spain, But I've Been To Barcelona (New York)
I’ve Never Been To Spain, But I’ve Been To Barcelona (New York)
Tumblr media
We pulled the car off on the side of the road and waited for a few more to pass, then I jumped in front of the road sign that read ‘Napoli’. “Hurry up! There are more coming!” I yelled as Diego tried to snap a pic with my phone. Before we got back on the road I consulted the map. “So where to next? If we go toward the lake we will hit Sunset Beach by 3.”
Did you know there are over 100 cities and…

Suptober Day 3: rainbows 🌈
wc: 991
Dark clouds bubbled up on the horizon, contrasting the shimmering light blue of the water, and Cas felt Dean shift on the towel beside him; fingers trailing over Cas’ bare shoulder where Dean had rubbed sunscreen into his skin an hour prior.
“Weather’s changing. Maybe we should head back to the hotel?” Dean murmured, nose brushing behind Cas’ ear while the cool metal of Dean’s ring tickled along Cas’ neck; a sensation that was still so new and surprising that it sent a shiver down Cas’ spine.
The sun was still shining above them, warm rays heating the sand they were lying on, even as the storm rolled in from out over the ocean. Something about the changing atmosphere was electrifying, a thrum vibrating through the grains of sand until it tingled along Cas’ fingers and all the way up to his heart.
“Can we stay?” Cas whispered the words on an exhale, eyes flickering out to the canvas of waves as a rumble of thunder echoed around them.
When Cas shifted his gaze back to Dean’s face, there was a twinkle in his eyes that made Cas grin. “We’re gonna get wet,” Dean teased, pressing his smile against Cas’ collarbone.
As if on cue, a drop of water landed on Cas’ nose, then another dropped from the sky and clung to his eyelashes. Cas tilted his head to feel the water on his skin, but instead of rain touching his lips, he felt Dean’s mouth against his own instead. They kissed, long and slow, with Cas tangling his fingers into Dean’s damp hair and Dean wiping raindrops off of Cas’ cheek.
A loud crack of thunder rattled through the air, and Cas broke the kiss with a gasp. A flash of lightning shot down to meet the ocean, and the rain cascaded down around them. Cas laughed as the rain began to drench them, leaning back on the towel until he was resting in Dean’s arms.
Dean’s breath ghosted along Cas’ ear as he nuzzled the back of Cas’ neck. “Look at the way the rain hits the waves,” Dean murmured.
God, it really was a sight. The way the rain pummeled the water below, and how the waves reached upwards towards the sky as if stretching out to catch the rain before the water reached the lowest point of the trough. It was as if the ocean was calling out to the sky, grasping to bring the water back to where it belonged.
“It looks so different from rain inland,” Cas said, and he felt Dean nod; soft hair tickling along the back of his shoulder.
“Water returning to its source,” Dean said gently.
Cas laughed again, happy and free, tipping his head back to rest on Dean’s shoulder until their eyes could meet. “I was just thinking the same thing.”
Dean beamed, tilting his head until he could press a kiss to Cas’ forehead. “No wonder I married you.”
It was such a simple statement, but Cas felt the breath stutter to a standstill in his lungs. They really were married. Dean chose him. Dean wanted him; not just today but forever.
“You know, they say rain on a wedding day is good luck,” Dean said, fingers sliding underneath Cas’ chin to tilt his head up. The rain was still falling around them, slowed down to a soft drizzle on the shore as the heavy clouds hung over the ocean.
“Our wedding was three days ago,” Cas pointed out, feeling his chest constrict as Dean leaned into his space until their lips were hovering just a breath apart. Every point of contact between their bodies was making Cas’ head spin; Dean’s bare chest pressed against his back, arms wrapped around Cas’ waist and legs tangled together on the towel they’d laid out in the sand.
It was too much and not enough and Cas wanted more, more, more.
“Mmm. That might be true. But they also say rainbows on a honeymoon are a sign that you’ve married the one,” Dean said, ghosting the words against Cas’ lips in the chastest of touches.
“You just made that up,” Cas mumbled, his lips catching against the corner of Dean’s mouth as Dean tilted away slightly.
“Did I?” Dean asked. Fingers were back on Cas’ jaw again, but instead of being tugged into a kiss, Dean nudged Cas’ head until he was looking back out at the ocean instead of counting the freckles across Dean’s cheek.
Spanning across the horizon and glinting a reflection in the dark blue water was a huge rainbow. The colors were even more vivid than any rainbow Cas had seen before on land, as if the waves were feeding all the color from the depths of the ocean and blasting them up into the sky in a perfect arc of light.
“It’s beautiful,” Cas murmured, eyes trailing over each individual arch of color: red, orange, yellow…. green. Turning back to face his husband, the green of Dean’s eyes was even more beautiful than the rainbow in the sky. “So beautiful,” he repeated, this time even softer as he rubbed a soothing circle over Dean’s cheek with his thumb.
“It’s good luck to kiss your husband under a rainbow on your honeymoon,” Dean said, smiling so tenderly Cas absolutely ached with it.
“What are you waiting for then? Kiss me, Dean.”
When Dean finally locked their lips together, Cas absolutely melted into the kiss. Soft brushes of rain-covered lips, the smell of saltwater and rain merging and mingling in the air, and the taste of Dean’s tropical drink lingering in Cas’ mouth as they traded kisses. No other kiss had ever felt like this before; like love and marriage and complete and utter bliss.
“My husband,” Dean murmured into the kiss, and Cas felt like his heart was bursting open with adoration.
If this was what marriage was like, Cas wanted every last raindrop of this perfection.
