If you've ever wondered why people in Hawai'i hate tourists, try to wrap your mind around the fact that there are CURRENTLY, RIGHT NOW, tourists sipping martinis and looking at fish within swimming range of the fresh corpses of local people who couldn't escape the overnight destruction of their entire town.
Try to comprehend that there are fully functional, high capacity boats passing through the waters in front of an area full of survivors who are stranded and in need of supplies, refusing to help. They are hosting snorkeling tours.
Really think about, try your best to actually picture over two thousand people unhoused and in need of shelter, with nothing but the clothes on their backs and nothing to return to. Understand that the island, stolen land, is littered with hotels full of air conditioned of rooms with beds and showers and toilets, each fully equipped to host hundreds of families for weeks, turning these people away because they're booked up with tourists who refuse to leave.
And understand that these tourists were offered free transport to return home or be hosted on other islands. Free. Courtesy of local tax dollars. 4,000 wealthy tourists were offered free flights shelter on Oahu and begged to leave the island, BEFORE the survivors were given shelter.
And enough still insisted on remaining and carrying out their vacations that people are left without shelter and resources while they enjoy "their stay in paradise".
[Edit]: This current situation, and this type of tourist behavior is horrifying beyond words. In other circumstances, the tourism situation is much more complicated, and I need to ask that people do not add on to this post unless they are local.

HEART OF HAWAII
WHICH ISLAND WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Hello Travelers!
The American writer Henry Miller famously said, "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." Doesn't that quote capture Hawaii perfectly? The Aloha Spirit, literally meaning, "the presence of breath," is the philosophy of living with love, compassion and grace for others. This makes Hawaii the perfect environment to create meaningful memories with friends and family... no matter which (if not all) of her picture perfect islands you choose to experience. With that said, if you have Hawaii in mind for the winter holidays, now is time to be thinking about reserving your space for festive travel. Please get in touch soon, as availability is quickly becoming extremely limited for many popular warm-weather destinations.
OAHU: SNORKELING AT HANAUMA BAY
THE KAHALA HOTEL & RESORT
If you want to get acquainted with hundreds of tropical fish and marine life, no matter your snorkeling level, take a 20-minute transfer from The Kahala Hotel & Resort to the famous Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. “Hana" is the Hawaiian word for "Bay" and "Uma" refers to the curves of the indigenous canoes. The bay was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. It remained one of the premier destinations in Oahu, featuring majestic green sea turtles, vibrant parrotfish, and more. When you return to the resort, continue getting up close and personal with sea life at their private dolphin lagoon.
KAUAI: A HAWAII & SOUTH PACIFIC CRUISE
CRYSTAL CRUISES
Wrapped in magnificent beaches, draped in lush rainforest and kissed by translucent waters, the gem-like islands of Hawaii and the South Pacific have long been the treasured muses of great artists, captivating all with their serene natural beauty. On this journey of locales, you’ll pause in Kauai, better known by its well-deserved nickname, the "Garden Isle." Fewer people live here than on the larger neighboring islands, but Hawaiian residents and out-of-state visitors alike are attracted to its acclaimed beaches, rugged emerald-colored cliffs, cascading waterfalls and magnificent sandy shores. Secluded coves are found all along the island's irregular coastline and a luxuriant rainforest flourishes on the "wet" side of the island, Kauai being one of the wettest spots on earth.
LANAI & BEYOND: ISLAND HOPPING IN FIVE STAR LUXURY
FOUR SEASONS RESORTS HAWAII
Island hopping has never been more of a necessity when you have the opportunity to experience four distinctly unforgettable island settings with unparalleled Four Seasons luxury, cuisine and service. Furthest north, the authentic yet contemporary Oahu property is nestled in the upscale vacation community of Ko Olina, known for its gorgeous sunsets and lagoons. In Lanai, explore the rugged terrain of this unspoiled island on horseback or ATV before Maui takes you in with her lush tropical landscapes and prime views for epic whale watching. And lastly, the beautiful Hualalai property is a natural sanctuary set on the exclusive Kona-Kohala coast of The Big Island.
THE BIG ISLAND: LAVA & RAINBOW FALLS EXCURSION SHORETRIPS
If you love nature, history and drama, this 5 1/2 hour tour might be a perfect add-on for your Hawaiian adventure. Located in Hilo, Hawaii, Rainbow Falls (known in the Hawaiian language as “rainbow water”) is an 80 ft tall masterpiece where the Wailuku River rushes down into a large pool below. On sunny mornings, this natural phenomenon projects rainbows as it flows over a natural lava cave. From here, you will head down the older back roads of Hawaii through mango groves before arriving at the lava flow that caused an evacuation of the town of Pahoa in 2018. Although at first glance it can look slow moving and harmless, lava can be incredibly hard to contain. At Kaimu, you will have the chance to walk on old lava flows that covered what was once a small beach town with beautiful black sand beaches. Lastly, in one of the most unique spots on the island, you’ll see where lava once burst out of fissures onto Ohia trees, leaving fascinating lava molds.

Any tips for travelling to Hawaii? I'm going there in a few weeks myself (first time!!!) but I've heard getting there can be brutal. Also leaving from Toronto.
Getting there is...long. It's a long day. But if you're a smart, organized traveller, it's fine. It's probably going to be a 22-hour day for me. We're getting picked up around 7:30 in the morning for a noon flight, and we probably won't get to the condo before 10pm Hawaii time. That's 4am EST. So yeah, long day.
Things I do, relatively in order.
-Give yourself enough time on a layover. You have to get across the airport. You have to get through security. You have to go through customs. These things take time. And if your flight out of Tornoto is delayed for whatever reason, you could be screwed.
-Designate an area in your carry-on for your documents. Know where it is, love it where it is, and make sure to fucking use it! Don't change your mind, don't put the stuff somewhere else for a second. From the spot, to the spot, love the spot, use the spot.
-Comfortable clothes. I'm a workout gear fan. And layers are a good idea.
-Water. Water. Water. Once you're through security, fill up a water bottle, or buy water. I don't care; you need water on the flights. When they come around with drink service, get water (no ice) alongside whatever else, you want. I'll also bring hydration powder or drops (e.g. Mio+sport) things that have electrolytes in them and dose my water with that on the second leg.
-Snacks. Bring your own snacks rather than relying on plane snacks. I'm saying not don't indulge if they have what you want, but stock varies, and you're not guaranteed anything. My staples are granola protein bars, low-sodium jerky, dried fruit, and some type of gummy candy. (Pro tip: especially if your snack is something individually wrapped, offer some to the flight attendants. They work a hard job, so try and be a bright spot. You're not going to get anything out of it other than being kind and not becoming a horror story for flight attendants with a YouTube Channel!)
-Speaking of the cabin crew. Always greet them with a friendly hello and/or a smile, at the door when they greet you. Be sure to mind your Ps and Qs. They're stuck on that tin can with you; people, especially lately, are jerks, and you know it's largely a thankless job, so be very kind to them.
-I like to try and get some sleep on the first flight, in my case to Vancouver, I just find that just sets my system up a little more to Hawaii time than sleeping on the second leg where I might naturally be a little more tired.
-Move. During that second flight especially move around. I'm not saying get up and pace the aisle, which I'm pretty sure just pisses flight attendants off. But get up, go to the bathroom every hour, hour and a half, even if you don't have to go; just take a minute in there, stretch a little, twist a little, then go back to your seat. You also can do some seated exercises, like calf raises, ankle rolls, etc.
-Compression stuff. I don't personally wear them; I don't feel the need. But pretty much everyone else in my family does. Compression socks especially, so yeah, no harm in giving it a try, just some money.
-Melatonin. I will take melatonin, if I can (not a great idea to take on shift), for a day or two before I leave and for a day or two after I get there. Same with coming home. I find it helps adjust to the time difference.
Have fun on your trip!
