RADIO SPACEMAN
This week saw the release of the last half of Mike Mignola’s Radio Spaceman: Mission to Numa 4.
This story was a lot of fun. It had spacemen, space frogmen, space bearmen, space kaiju, a space vampire, a space archaeologist, and some more space stuff. If you haven’t read it yet, just be forwarned that there will be no more missions to Numa 4. But hopefully Radio Spaceman will return.
It’s nice to see Mignola branch out with stories that aren't related to his Hellboy-centric Mignolaverse (not that there’s anything wrong with those; I love me some Hellboy - in a purely Platonic way, of course!). I wish he was drawing this story as well as writing, but I keep reading that he’s semi-retired, so I should be thankful for whatever I can get.
Still, I wish he could have provided a cover for this isssue. In lieu of that, I have a fewl sketches he’s done of Radio Spaceman to fill that void.
Radio Spaceman: Mission to Numa 4 is on sale now at yer local comic book shoppe.

RADIO SPACEMAN
Radio Spaceman is a character created by Mike Mignola who, I believe, first showed up on Mignola’s Twitter page.
During the pandemic Mignola was posting a sketch a day to entertain his fans (heck, he might still be doing it, but I ain’t on the Twitter so I don’t know). These character sketches ran the gamut from comic books, pop culture, and original ideas.
Radio Spaceman must be near and dear to Mignola’s heart because he kept showing up in the daily sketches. From what I understand, many other people were entranced by the character and wanted to know more about him.
Which brings us to today, when the first issue of Radio Spaceman: Mission to Numa 4 was released.
Mike Mignola is semi-retired these days, so he rarely writes and/or draws comic stories by himself anymore. I was happy to see he was the sole writer of this story. While I would have liked him to draw the story as well, artist Greg Hinkle does a good job of giving the pages that familiar Mignola aesthetic while retaining his own style. And longtime Mignola collaborator Dave Stewart does another phenomenal job with the colors.
Still, there’s something about a story written by a cartoonist (someone who writes and draws their own stories) like Mignola (or Art Adams, or Walt Simonson, and many others) but drawn by someone else that just feels...off.
Or maybe I’m the only one who feels this way.
Anyhoos, Radio Spaceman: Mission to Numa 4 is a fun read. It feels like a future/space opera Amazing Screw-On Head, which in my book is very much a good thing. I will say no more so as not to spoil the story for those who’ve not read it yet.
