July 2012. In a triumph for LGBT Representation, perennial hack and noted transphobe James Robinson establishes that the new, young Alan Scott (Green Lantern) of the New 52 Earth 2 is gay — and celebrates by burning Alan's boyfriend to death literally seconds after Alan proposes, so Alan can feel bad.
August 2020. In a triumph for LGBT Representation, writer James Tynion IV establishes that Earth-0 Alan Scott is gay by revealing that the guy standing next to him at the beginning of his first appearance in ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #16 (July 1940), killed in the train wreck that led to Alan discovering the Green Flame and becoming the Golden Age Green Lantern, was Alan's boyfriend. (Don't worry, he still dies horribly, so Alan can feel bad!)
December 2023. In a triumph for LGBT Representation, writer Tim Sheridan and artist Cian Tormey launch a new six-issue miniseries that celebrates Alan Scott's coming out by delving into the decades of official blackmail and murdered lovers that kept the original Green Lantern miserable and closeted for almost 85 years, so Alan can feel bad!
Look, it's fine that DC wants to establish that Alan Scott is gay. He wouldn't have been my first thought among the original JSA (short list: Charles McNider, Terry Sloane, Ted Knight, Al Pratt), but I can see it. However, DC's approach to it has been nothing short of ghoulish, and this new miniseries looks to be even worse.

Legendary Hellboy Creator Mike Mignola and Acclaimed Artist Ben Stenbeck Unveil an All-New Fictional Universe: Lands Unknown
Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown
is an Anthology of Folklore-inspired Fantasy Stories, Written and Drawn by Mignola,
Colored by Dave Stewart and Lettered by Clem Robins
That Introduces a Shared Universe of Stand-Alone Stories Created by Mignola and Stenbeck
Thirty years after Mike Mignola created Hellboy, the legendary cartoonist is introducing readers to a brand new shared universe, created with frequent collaborator Ben Stenbeck, the writer/artist of the acclaimed series Our Bones Dust. In December, Dark Horse Comics will publish Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, an anthology of folklore-inspired fantasy stories written and illustrated by Mignola, coloured by Dave Stewart, and lettered by Clem Robins. The book will be the first publication from Curious Objects, Mignola’s new imprint at Dark Horse and will set the stage for more weird, wicked, and whimsical stories in the “Lands Unknown” universe from Mignola and Stenbeck.
In Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, the stories are fantastical, odd and charming — from a search for the beating heart of a long-dead sorcerer, to a pirate girl who makes a deal with the devil, to the titular boy who wins a grim prize in a game with undead interlopers.
“It all started with an Italian Folktale about a boy who goes bowling with corpses,” said Mignola. “I fell in love with the story as soon as I discovered it but I wanted to play fast and loose when adapting it, so I created a whole new world. Not TOO different than our world a few centuries ago, but with a lot more gods and monsters. Once I created that world new characters and stories just started pouring out of it. There is a whole lot to play with here and I expect to be at it for a very long time.”
few years now Mike has been emailing me designs and pages and ideas and maps and lists of place names for this world, and his enthusiasm for this project is indomitable and infectious,” said Stenbeck, who will be writing and drawing other, unannounced future Lands Unknown comics. “So often my reaction to these emails is ‘that's great Mike! But I still have two books to draw before I can even move on to this work!’ and then I find myself taking three days off to write a new story. Luckily Mike likes my stories. My first project is set far off in a distant corner of this world. That way I can't bump into anything Mike is doing and make a mess. Spoiler...it will have monsters in it.”
In addition to the Hellboy Universe he created three decades ago, Mignola has co-created the Outerverse Universe with New York Times bestselling novelist Christopher Golden, co-created a series of eerie and off-kilter Victorian-style gothic mysteries with Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, starring Professor J.T. Meinhardt, Mr. Knox, and Ms. Mary Van Sloan, and recently co-created Radio Spaceman with Greg Hinkle and Leonide the Vampire with Rachele Aragno. In addition to his work on the Hellboy and Outerverse universes, Stenbeck’s writer-artist debut Our Bones Dust has generated widespread acclaim.
Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown is a 112-page hardcover that will be released in bookstores on December 3, 2024 and in comic shops on December 4. Follow Dark Horse Comics on social media for more news, announcements, and updates.

RADIO SPACEMAN
Radio Spaceman is a character created by Mike Mignola who, I believe, first showed up on Mignola’s Twitter page.
During the pandemic Mignola was posting a sketch a day to entertain his fans (heck, he might still be doing it, but I ain’t on the Twitter so I don’t know). These character sketches ran the gamut from comic books, pop culture, and original ideas.
Radio Spaceman must be near and dear to Mignola’s heart because he kept showing up in the daily sketches. From what I understand, many other people were entranced by the character and wanted to know more about him.
Which brings us to today, when the first issue of Radio Spaceman: Mission to Numa 4 was released.
Mike Mignola is semi-retired these days, so he rarely writes and/or draws comic stories by himself anymore. I was happy to see he was the sole writer of this story. While I would have liked him to draw the story as well, artist Greg Hinkle does a good job of giving the pages that familiar Mignola aesthetic while retaining his own style. And longtime Mignola collaborator Dave Stewart does another phenomenal job with the colors.
Still, there’s something about a story written by a cartoonist (someone who writes and draws their own stories) like Mignola (or Art Adams, or Walt Simonson, and many others) but drawn by someone else that just feels...off.
Or maybe I’m the only one who feels this way.
Anyhoos, Radio Spaceman: Mission to Numa 4 is a fun read. It feels like a future/space opera Amazing Screw-On Head, which in my book is very much a good thing. I will say no more so as not to spoil the story for those who’ve not read it yet.

Mike Mignola and Greg Hinkle’s new two-issue comic book event Radio Spaceman will be published by Dark Horse Comics. Radio Spaceman also features colors by Dave Stewart and lettering by Clem Robins. The comic is based on Mignola’s pencil sketches of the character.
Radio Spaceman is a“standalone steampunk space adventure.” A spaceship crashes on a mysterious planet and some of the survivors go missing. "Radio Spaceman is called to investigate. But the planet hides much more than the missing crew, and Radio Spaceman may be stumbling into more than even he can handle.” (Dark Horse Comics)
