Invincible Vs Rogue Sun.
A musing on how 2 different Image Comics told a similar story, and why i prefer 1 to another. (NOT POWERSCALING.)
Invincible Season 3, Episode 6: All I Can Say Is That I'm Sorry "The question is, how Hellbent are you on revenge?" Okay, I know this is a break from form, me reviewing a single episode of a TV series, but i just have a lot of stuff to say about this episode, because honestly, I'm pretty conflicted on it. On one hand, Powerplex's arc was incredibly interesting, and Aaron Paul does an absolutely amazing job selling the ||sheer desperation.|| On the other hand, I have personally seen this arc done so much better in a so much more interesting way, that was even by the same comic publisher. A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES!!! Rogue Sun, Volume 2: Hellbent "Why is TITLE CARD above the law! why does TITLE CARD never pay for his crimes!" That's right, this isn't just a review of one episode of Invincible, this is also a review of the 2nd volume of Rogue Sun, since both of these things have a very similar arc. Both pieces of media have ||an antagonist who has had someone (or someones) close to them by the hero majorly harmed, but in Powerplex's case, his sister and nephew were both killed during the big fight in Chicago, and in Hellbent's case, his father was knocked comatose by Dylan (Rogue Sun).|| And the reason i think Hellbent's arc is so much more interesting is multifaceted. First: Hellbent has a lot more time to make himself sympathetic, considering his arc spans 4 issues, and Powerplex only spans 1 issue/episode. 2nd, ||Hellbent is a lot more reasonable for being absolutely pissed, since his father was intentionally fucking maimed by Rogue Sun, meanwhile, Powerplex's 2 deaths that were close to him were the fault of Omni-man and not Mark, so he feels a bit more insane to me, and less sympathetic.|| Third, Invincible feels like it was almost trying to make Powerplex into a joke, like, ||the title card bit i referenced in the quote, the scene with him practicing his monologue, the scene with shapesmith,|| all feel like they're almost ruining the impact of how tragic his arc is. Meanwhile, Hellbent, from the moment he's introduced, is a massive fucking threat, ||almost killing Rogue Sun in their first fight.|| Fourth, Mark has infinitely bigger problems to deal with in the series than one really pissed off guy. ||Angstrom coming back is being foreshadowed, the viltrumites are still coming eventually, even those fucking martian parasite things are still around||, meanwhile Dylan is mainly just a street level hero, so, one guy who is really pissed at him is so much more terrifying, especially since ||Hellbent was actually able to win a fight against Dylan.|| and last but definitely not least, Dylan is not a good person, Dylan is a bully at school, he makes jokes out of the villains he's beating up. He is a character who desperately needed the reality check, and ||to see that his actions as a hero do truly have consequences for other people.|| Meanwhile, Mark already feels like shit for everything he does, ||he spent most of last seasons finale being depressed about killing a guy who was gonna kill his family, i feel like he doesn't really change from this arc.|| You might be saying, wait, wasn't this a review for invincible, yes, yes it orignally was, but Hellbent's arc and rogue sun as a whole is fucking amazing and i needed to talk about it. there's even more points i could make, like for example, ||having the harmed person still be alive and horrified by the revengers actions makes it hit even harder.|| Or how Hellbent's style of fighting with a sword is so much more visceral and has so much more impact than electricity powers, or how ||actually having someone close to the protagonist die to the antagonist makes the arc so much more impactful||, but this has already been a long review, we're almost at the character limit and it might sound like i hated the invincible episode, but i really didn't, i did enjoy it a lot, it's just that Rogue Sun is fucking amazing. So overall, read Rogue Sun, its fucking great, so is Invincible. :)

rogue sun spoilers
i've seen people saying that it feels like Dylan has just gone back to not trusting Marcus again, and it feels like ignoring character growth but like. i feel like it's completely justified??
because the issues with Marcus were never resolved in the first place. the last time they had an actual talk about their relationship was
Tumblr media
all the way back in issue 18. every thing after that has just been Marcus warning Dylan that he may have to give up his normal life if he wants to be Rogue Sun, and that the people always come first and all that. but in the latest issue:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dylan made it very clear he only wants to be Rogue Sun until his mom is saved, so Marcus' mentoring and advice probably doesn't mean anything to him. in issue 24, he tells Marcus that he needs him to know who's working for and against Mourningstar, there's no actual development in their relationship (i also feel like this is really clear in issue 19)
whatever "bond" they had was extremely fragile, they made tiny steps forward in the second arc, and Dylan is completely justified to distrust Marcus again for lying to him

Rogue Sun #25
"I sold my soul for vengeance, but I wonder... what did you sell your soul for?"
In this issue of Rogue Sun, Dylan rashly leaves conversations before they reach a point where we can avoid the next 5 issues worth of problems.
I remember the advertisement for this new phase of Rogue Sun mentioning that it was similar to Radiant Black: Rebuild; a fresh new start where you could come in without knowing a lot about the series. And I feel like that's not really what this is.
Rogue Sun's had an issue with its scale, I think. The villain is a larger-than-all-life threat to sentience that can only really attack through monster-of-the-week one-hat villains who want revenge, and that's fine, that's perfectly decent, but Dylan has kinda not advanced beyond his anger with his father as a result. Most of these villains mean nothing to him and the ones that do don't show up often, aside from his mom.
So i guess I kinda see the point of giving us a second Rogue Sun in the form of his overachieving... cousin, yeah?... who has something to prove, empowered by one of his archnemeses. Which, hey, I like Aurie well enough, I just don't quite know if this is the most interesting thing we could do with her character.
I feel like Rogue Sun has established magic systems and powers unique enough that just having two Supermen so to speak feels a little dry. And speaking of "two Supermen", I also kinda feel like her design is too similar? It was a little difficult for me to understand what was happening in some shots of the action as far as who was doing what. Her armor is greyer than Dylan's but I feel like they could have done a better job at distinguishing her, either through different speech balloons or I don't know, different-colored fire.
The way it is, we're 25 issues in and the situation is mostly the same as it was at the beginning. Dylan hates his dead dad, Aurie feels pushed down, Mourningstar is still scheming and plotting... I don't know, I really hope this new era of Rogue Sun shakes it up more than just having Aurie be around more fights. I definitely trust the team enough to make something interesting out of it, just don't particularly feel this issue was a banger opening to the new arc. Looking forward to 26, though. Busuttil seemed really excited for it.

Rogue Sun #24 quick thoughts (spoiler-free)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the things that consistently astounds me about this series is the way it builds tension for up-and-coming plots. I haven't seen as much escalation as I have an enmeshment of personal stakes; in general, the power levels stay relatively consistent, just above Daredevil but just below Spider-Man, but the threats these heroes face are varied and threaten something they hold dear, or provoke a change in the status quo. I saw the end of this issue, in particular, and I gasped aloud at what was coming. No character is completely static, neither incapable of evil nor unsympathetic (except, perhaps, Mourningstar, but we shall see) and that could drive them to extremes in the right circumstances. That's what makes this such a fun, messy superhero series.

Marcus, you did not know about him, you assume you do. You assume you know him more than the parent who actually raised him and was actually there for him. You thought he was the type of boy who would take the money and not think much about what being Rogue Sun, a superhero, could be for him.
Marcus thought Dylan was a boy without commitment... even though he was raised by the most committed and ambitious women in the comic series

Drawing Idea: Juliette gets sick and Brock and Aurie are handling it pretty badly. Aurie tried to cook like she's summoning a demon and it leads to a demon being summoned. Dylan comes back from a mission just in time to see the demon, a destroyed kitchen, and two panicking half-siblings.
Dylan helps them kick the demon's butt and cooks chicken soup and have Brock serve it to his mom. Aurie and Dylan banter for a bit and Dylan reveals he knows how to cook because he cooked a lot for his mom, Gwen Siegel, especially when she was sick, and then Dylan leaves Aurie to clean the kitchen on her own (also Brock to clean up).
At the end of the day, Dylan's a child raised by a single mother and asshole.

setting up an end for Dylan as Rogue Sun just when you introduce Rogue Sun Aurie? hmmm...
also this dialogue here?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the way he says it, how he's framed with his mom behind him... i don't want to be too hasty but it feels like a possible villain arc for Dylan 👀
