A Serious Deep Dive into Black History with a Comic Twist

Hosted by Brian “B-Daht” McLaughlin, comedian, radio host and creator of "The Freestyle Funny Comedy Show," 

“I Didn’t Know, Maybe You Didn’t Either” is a historical docuseries rooted in Black excellence and legacy with a comic twist.

  Throughout the series, McLaughlin showcases under-known Black history, including some events that took place near his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina. The progressive podcast series is focused on cultivating connectivity and progression through truth within communities. 

Season three of “I Didn’t Know, Maybe You Didn’t Either” will have something for everyone, from history buffs to those who are tuning in for a good laugh. In episode one, McLaughlin discusses the United States’ long history of racism, swimming pools and “White Flight,” a post-desegregation phenomenon that occurred when white residents would leave their neighborhoods once they became racially integrated. 

 There is some much of Black history that has been either suppressed or just not well documented.

 For example, Between 1810-1850, an estimated 100,000 slaves used the Underground Railroad to escape to the North. That puts the lie to the assertion by modern conservatives that Blacks were content under slavery.

I didn't know that Baseball legend Jackie Robinson had an older brother, Matthew “Mack” Robinson, who broke the Olympic record in 1936 in the 200-meter dash. However, he took home the silver medal because he finished behind Jesse Owens, just like every other runner in the world in that Olympics.

Did you know that Dr. Gladys West is "a still-living and largely unheralded Black woman whose scientific contributions enabled us to understand geodesy and the shape of the Earth well enough to make GPS technology possible?"

Finally, as we prepare for the mega sporting event of the year, The Super Bowl, let's recall the sad racial history of the Washington football franchise.

George Preston Marshall, owner of the Washington Redskins NFL team, was a supporter of racial segregation, and was the last NFL owner to integrate Black players onto the roster. He did so in 1962 under pressure from the NFL and the federal government, which threatened to block the use of D.C. Stadium, which they owned, unless he did.

Under such pressure, the Washington Redskins used three Black players during the 1962 season -- Bobby Mitchell, John Nisby and Ron Hatcher. In his first game in Washington, Mitchell ran back a 92-yard kickoff return against the Dallas Cowboys. The Redskins finished the season with a 5–7–2 record, their best record in five years. Mitchell led the league with 72 catches and, 1384 yards and ranked third with 11 touchdowns. He was selected to the first of three consecutive Pro Bowls.

 When George Preston Marshall died in 1969, he left some money to his children but directed that the bulk of his estate be used to set up a foundation in his name. He attached, however, one firm condition: that the foundation, operating out of Washington, D.C., should not direct a single dollar toward “any purpose which supports or employs the principle of racial integration in any form.”

ABC AUDIO ANNOUNCES SPECIAL LABOR DAY HOLIDAY PROGRAMMING

Today, ABC Audio announced three different specials for the Labor Day holiday. Understanding the #metoo hoax. #Metoo was expedited victim hood status for celebrities before the economic slump caused by Covid in Hollywood, to increase their credibility in the framing program that was geared against “white male aggressors”. #Metoo was even common with Middle East dictators way before #metoo, labeling Gaddafi and Saddam’s sons as rapists and all have links to Hollywood or Trump and the US government. Much like BLM accusing whites of racism with a hoax like George Floyd, metoo was designed to purge whites from affluent position of power and wealth just as the economic damage caused by Covid which is also a hoax that affected mostly white people and western countries while the GDP of China rose. The celebrities who participated in the #metoo hoax likely generated some income from it before Covid shut down Hollywood for a year in much the same way the Super Bowl generates tremendous ad revenue totalling millions. According to text messages collected from the celebrities involved, they are very active sexually and participate in casual sex frequently. Another group that received expedited victim hood status were the Muslims in China and NZ with mosque shootings to increase their credibility in the framing program against whites much like the Holocaust increased the credibility of jws before, during and after WW2. The number of thefts in NY and California sometimes numbered over 100,000 in a year per state, which is likely incentivized by the framing program using stolen personal belongings.

-America has a high number of infants who are switched at birth that have been delivered by surrogates and nontransgender parents. This phenomenon is coupled with a high number of SIDS cases among infants.

-America is further away from Africa and Asia but it is becoming increasingly asiatic and africanized.

-2 out of 10 infants have blue eyes in America. Over 10 individuals from my family had blue eyes in the last 100 years. My brother has blue eyes meaning 5 out of 10 siblings would of had blue eyes or as high as 7 out of 10.

-BLM riots happened in 30 states. NWA and Rodney King riots originated from California.

-Gaddafi, Xi Jinping, Putin, Assad, Morsi, Saddam, Erdoğan, BinLaden all have relatives in Hollywood or kids who live in Hollywood. Obama played Osama with Borat who matches Osama 100%. SoCal is a lot warmer with sunny beaches compared to freezing and gloomy Moscow and London.

-Christopher Stevens and the Lybian embassy attack was faked. Stevens is a match for the Christopher Steele of the infamous Trump dossier.

-Ali Khamenei in Iran matches Pope Francis 100% and is likely fictional but America intends to invade anyway. Hassan Rouhani also matches Pope Francis.

-In the last 10 to 15 years, Gaddafi and Saddam were removed from the public space likely as a precaution in the event I would link them to Hollywood and the US government. This also happened with Pablo Escobar. My predicament was planned ahead by at least 3 decades.

-Covid or China virus as labeled by Trump, was the medium necessary to pit Asians against whites in the west, just as George Floyd was the medium for BLM, 911 and the mosques and sharia law are the medium for pitting Muslims against whites. DACA and the border wall is the medium necessary to pit Mexicans against whites.

-Covid is another “ism” (socialism, environmentalism, feminism, communism, etc) that is reinforced by masks and social distancing through a goverment mandate.

-Pablo Escobar was a fictional character possibly played by Robert Downye Jr, Chris Hemsworth or Oliver Platt simply to fuel white disfunction in America.

-The West prioritises diversity over national security. The DoD has adopted this policy and asian-americans are now recruited.

DEAN MARTIN

June 7, 1917 - December 25, 1991

Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio and became one of the most popular and enduring entertainers of the mid-20th century. A singer, actor, and comedian, Martin’s career breakthrough came in 1946 through his partnership with comedian Jerry Lewis, billed as Martin & Lewis. They performed in nightclubs and later had numerous appearances on radio, television and in films. 

Lucille Ball’s first appearance with Dean Martin was on his NBC radio show with Jerry Lewis in December 1948. Lucy was then the star of her own radio show, “My Favorite Husband” on CBS. 

Following an end to their partnership in 1956, Martin established himself as a notable singer, recording numerous contemporary songs as well as standards from the Great American Songbook. His hit singles, including his signature songs "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody", "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You", "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?" and "Volare".

He became one of the most popular acts in Las Vegas and was known for his friendship with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., who together formed the Rat Pack. Throughout his career, Martin appeared in 85 film and television productions. In the above photo at the Sands Casino, the Rat Pack is joined by Lucy and Danny Thomas (top) and Gary Morton (right). 

In “Lucy and Wayne Newton” (HL SS2;E2) the Carters are driving down the Las Vegas strip when Craig notices that Dean Martin is playing at the Riviera. Kim says “He’s one of my favorites!”

Part of Dean’s act involved his affection for alcoholic beverages. Jokes about Dean Martin’s drinking were common, even when Dean was not part of the show. 

In “Lucy the Disc Jockey” (TLS S3;E26) Lucy tries to see the title of the song on a spinning turntable and gets dizzy, she says 

“No wonder. It’s a Dean Martin album.”  

In “Lucy the Stockbroker” (TLS S3;E25) Lucy discovers that Mr. Mooney is really hypnotized, not faking. Viv says 

“He’s stiffer than Dean Martin.”

In “Lucy and Lawrence Welk” (HL S2;E18), Viv returns from the Universal Studios Tour and tells Lucy

“I saw...Dean Martin’s bartender.”

Lucille Ball adored working with Martin, despite the fact that their working styles were polar opposites. Ball was committed to rehearsals where Martin preferred to ‘wing it.’  Due to her great affection for him, she put up with it.

The first time Lucille Ball and Dean Martin appeared on the same television show (though not at the same time) came in 1950 on “Show of the Year: Telethon for United Cerebral Palsy” hosted by Milton Berle on NBC. Dean Martin never appeared on “I Love Lucy,” but his second wife did! Former Orange Bowl Queen Jeanne Biegger (billed only as Mrs. Dean Martin) appeared as herself wearing a Don Loper dress in 1955’s “The Fashion Show” (ILL S4;E19). The couple divorced in 1973.  Martin then married Catherine Hawn, but the unioni lasted only three years.  Martin’s first wife was Betty McDonald, who he married in 1941 and divorced in 1949.  Martin had eight children.

Dean Martin was one of the performers at the Friar’s Club Roast of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz on November 23, 1958. The event, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, was not telecast. 

It would be ten years before Lucy and Dean again appeared on the same show (again, not at the same time) with “The Bob Hope Buick Sports Show Awards” in 1961.  The show primarily took place in Los Angeles, but Lucille Ball’s segment took place in New York City, where she was appearing in Wildcat. 

Two years later, Bob Hope presented the “TV Guide Awards.” Lucille Ball is nominated for Favorite Female Performer, but is not present. A still photo of her is shown instead. 

Starting in 1964, Martin was the host of the television variety program “The Dean Martin Show”, which was characterized by his relaxed, easy-going demeanor.  Lucille Ball appeared on the show in 1966 along with singer Kate Smith. 

In return, four days later Dean appeared on “The Lucy Show,” playing himself and his own stuntman, Eddie Feldman. Lucille Ball said that this was her favorite episode of “The Lucy Show.” 

Both Lucy and Dean were part of “Jack Benny’s Carnival Nights” in 1968, although once again they do not share screen time. Martin does a quick cameo  playing the Amazing Sleeping Man!  The opening of the show was performed on the set of “The Dean Martin Show” complete with fire pole and sexy assistants! 

Martin was in attendance at the “20th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards” where Lucille Ball won her fourth (and final) competitive acting Emmy,along with  Bill Cosby (”I Spy”) and  Don Addams (”Get Smart”).

In 1968, Lucille Ball (and many other stars) makes a cameo appearance on “The Dean Martin Christmas Show” to announce the donation of toys to children in hospitals. The cameos are filmed without Martin present. 

A year later, the two were also on the bill for “Ann-Margret: From Hollywood With Love.”  Dean Martin and Dean Martin sing a medley of country western songs and then do a sketch where the gender roles are reversed. Lucy, appearing in a separate segment, plays herself and an autograph hound named Celebrity Lu. 

Lucille Ball (and dozens of other stars) make guest appearanced on “The Dean Martin Show’s” sixth season opener in September 1970. 

In “Jack Benny’s 20th Anniversary Show” (November 1970) Lucy plays Jack’s maid, Janet, while Dean plays himself. Martin knocks on Jack’s dressing room door to wish him a happy anniversary and dance “The Anniversary Waltz” with him. The bit lasts less than 30 seconds.  

Later in November 1970, “John Wayne’s Swing Out Sweet Land” featured Dean Martin as Eli Whitney (of cotton gin fame) and Lucille Ball as the voice of Lady Liberty. 

In February 1975 “Dean Martin’s Celebrity Roast" was dedicated to Lucille Ball. On the dais, Martin presents Lucille’s friends and colleagues Bob Hope, Gale Gordon, Milton Berle, Henry Fonda, Ginger Rogers, Jack Benny, and Vivian Vance.

A year later it was Lucille doing the roasting, this time of her friend Danny Thomas. Also on Martin’s dais are Orson Welles, Milton Berle, and Gene Kelly.

Two year after that, in 1978, Lucille returned for yet another Dean Martin Roast, this time for her Beverly Hills neighbor, Jimmy Stewart. 

In 1975, on of the Lucille Ball CBS Specials was “Lucy Gets Lucky” starring Dean Martin. Ball plays Lucy Collins, who travels to Las Vegas to see her favorite star perform. To get into the sold out show she must work a variety of casino and hotel jobs!  

“NBC: The First 50 Years” (1976) was a four and a half hour extravaganza that naturally included clips of Dean Martin (who’s show was on the network) but also included Lucille Ball on “The Danny Kaye Show.”

“CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years” (1976) includes Dean Martin talking about how much he loves working with Lucille Ball. 

At the start of 1980, Lucille Ball and Dean Martin are just two of the many guests in “Sinatra: The First 40 Years” celebrating his 64th birthday and 40th year in show business. 

“Bob Hope’s Unrehearsed Antics of the Stars” on  September 28, 1984 featured Lucy talking about her audition for Gone With The Wind and Dean Martin in a clip of a sketch with Hope about airline pilots. 

In 1984′s “An All-Star Party for Lucille Ball” Dean Martin sings “When You’re Smiling” with special lyrics to suit the occasion: “When you’re Lucy, When you’re Lucy, You’re never off TV.”

Their last on-screen collaboration was to celebrate the opening of the Bob Hope Cultural Center at Palm Springs in “America’s Tribute to Bob Hope” in March 1988. Dozens of friends gather and offer comedy and musical performances to honor the building’s namesake including Lucille Ball, Dean Martin, George Burns, Ann-Margret, Dinah Shore, and Danny Thomas.

A further connection came offscreen when Lucille Ball’s son Desi Aranz joined with Dean Martin’s son Dino and Billy Hinsche to form a rock band known as Dino, Desi and Billy.

A television show might also be called a television program (British English: programme), especially if it lacks a narrative structure. The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 69190s. Televised events such as the 69196 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 69197 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 69199 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 6947 World Series inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 6948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “Mr Television” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 69676 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets.[6][2][19] The first national color broadcast (the 69674 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 6, 69674. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 69667, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 6972, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season.

Re: Black Friday Blues, Small Business Sadness, Cyber Monday Madness

I know, I know. You see everyone else promoting their Black Friday blowouts, Small Business Saturday sales and Cyber Monday discounts, and you’re wondering why your business, product or service wasn’t “ready” to go. I’ve been there; one reason or another I’ve been there. You are not alone. I want to talk to those who are hiding in the shadows of everyone else’s booming business, and social media success. You may even be purchasing from these hard-working entrepreneurs all the while regretting that you weren’t prepared enough to sell-out of your top product. You may be wondering why the investors didn’t commit, why the product didn’t do the numbers you projected, why your family doesn’t support, why you second-guessed yourself, why you didn’t believe in your own dream…sooner. I know I’m not alone in thinking the aforementioned at one point or another. Perhaps it was because your goals weren’t clear, or if they were you didn’t develop AND follow your plan. Whatever the reason; face it. Deal with it. Embrace it. Learn from it. Then, let it go. That’s the only way to grow. Between the weeds, behind the smile, the manipulated media are women everywhere suffering through the swamp of success that leads to personal fulfillment. It’s not an easy task and I’ve come to learn that networks, teams and a tribe is not only necessary for the physical labor (shopping, packaging, etc), but its necessary for the mental taunting that entrepreneurship brings as you ride an emotional roller coaster of trial & error on your way to mastery. Year after year I found myself not trusting in my own skill or my gut decision and unique abilities to stick with something to the point of mastery. Year after year I invested time, money and energy into people and things that would not and could not deposit anything valuable back into me, my business or growth goals. What I didn’t realize at the time is that they were getting more out of my natural abilities, pruned by experience and some success, but my second-guessing blinded my priceless contributions. My contributions exceeded their title, age, and bank accounts. For varying reasons, I wasn’t ready. It could have “just not been the right time”, but ultimately I wasn’t ready. In some aspects, I’m grateful that I didn’t step out completely ill-prepared, and other times I wondered often what life would have been like had I believed. I’m multi-talented, so my attention was on multiple things, simultaneously without much room to focus on mastering one. But, these are my reasons, what are yours? That is not a rhetorical question. What we must realize is that our reality is not the reality of those we loathe on social media. I had to face the fact that having my son at 14, loosing my Mother 5 years later, and finding myself responsible for raising my son and younger brother while attempting to get a degree and work a sufficient job were the facts of my life that I didn’t necessarily plan or prepare for. But I carried on. I preserved beyond what some would call obstacles and started businesses, hosted radio shows, produced celebrity events, covered televised awards shows, covered the NFL Draft, worked with the Super Bowl, worked in corporate America, pursued higher degrees, traveled the country, relocated, travel to other countries, spoke in London and Amsterdam, produced audio books, and yet I did not have a product, skill or service that I sold or promoted on Black Friday, or did I??? My plan was to have available the extended version of my eBook “3 Ways to Make Money Using Your Voice”, release Volume II of this book dedicated to podcasters and to pre-sell a book of short-stories that talked about me being a teen Mom. I have the context because it’s the life that I lived. I wrote the content and it’s currently (as I type) in draft mode on my laptop. But I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t force a release because it was Black Friday, Small Business Saturday or Cyber Monday. I wouldn’t rush to print, and promote just because it’s the thing to do. This time. I’ve done that in the past…rushed. Not realizing I hadn’t stuck with a plan, saw it all the way through to get to a point in my progression that I would see measurable results without rushing. It blew my mind. With my experience, exposure, travel and an extended resume, why did seeing it through seem impossible??? It wasn’t impossible. And that wasn’t the right question. The question was: “Why did seeing it through when it came to MY goals, seem impossible??” That’s the million-dollar question. I ask you the same. As many factors contribute to why you weren’t / aren’t ready, I’m here to challenge you with the one important part of this question that can only be answer introspectively. Why when it comes to “YOUR GOALS” do you not see them through; procrastinate; delay?? Again, not a rhetorical question but one that needs answering. You see, the products have been ready and the audience in wait, but my collective capacity had to match the energy of what I produced. My preparation needed to have an end goal, a direction, a target. Forbes.com published that a 2015 study on fear and entrepreneurship, fear is actually a major psychological barrier to most business leaders, as it can prevent them from taking necessary risks for their success. 

Fear is a major factor in these entrepreneur streets - a bigger factor that what we may want to admit. Fear of failing, fear of being rejected, fear of not having the capital we need, fear, fear, fear…all self-sabotage. Here are some of my tips to overcoming entrepreneurs’ entrapment: 1. Keep your mind on things above. Shift your thinking upward and keep your God-given purpose in the forefront. This will help with maintaining a positive mindset even when noone is clapping for you. 2. Trust yourself. Trust the God that is within and listen to that part of you. Keep it fed. 3. Surround yourself with people with similar and elevated mindsets. Having people on your level is one thing, but having people who are where you strive to be that challenge your thought-pattern makes you level-up. 4. Create a plan, and make adjustments often. A lot of times people create a plan and are so dedicated they do not see the need to make adjustments based on industry needs, trends, market shifts or just being flexible enough to bend as needed. 5. Press past how you feel. Don’t think that you’re going to “feel like it” everyday, because you won’t. Press pass how you feel, but embrace the fact that these days or moments will come. It’s natural. 6. Be realistic. Everyday may not seem like a good day, but everyday that you have a chance to get it right, is a good day. 7. REST. I’m not a believer or a fan of “team no sleep”. Yes, you may have long nights and early mornings, it comes with the territory. However to deny yourself, you mind, body and spirit the adequate rest it needs to function at its peak is not wisdom, nor does it make you a better business person. It mays you a tired one. Clear minds, creative concepts and innovative ideas come from a rested entrepreneur. 8. Challenge your challenges. Don’t ignore them…those things that seem like roadblocks when in all actuality they are moments putting you on pause. Embrace that time and let it work in your favor. We need to be challenged to test our fortitude, increase our grit, and to really see if we’re about this entrepreneur life. Smartly determine if this challenge is meant to tell you to stop, pause, or shift 9. Don’t give up. Even if you stop to recollect yourself; don’t give up. 10. PRAY!!!!!!!! Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Mondays are dates on the calendar. Should you not be ready on either of these days, but find that the second week in December, first week in January, or the third Monday in June is the best date for your business or new product release, you do what’s best for you. If you’re like me, you like to tie-in releases, launches and announcements with special dates, anniversaries and connect it to a profound purpose. But, let’s face it, that day can be very day. So, stop the comparisons outside of market research, and tap into what is best for your business. This includes the personal and professional factors that are impacted by the moves you make. In light of the biggest retail weekend of the year, I want you to remember that you’re not alone in thinking “I should have…!” or “Why didn’t I…?” Understand this: if you didn’t stick with a plan throughout the year, but attempted to cram and rush release of product this weekend, you’re not going to reap the rewards of proper planning and execution. You will reap rewards of rushing to fit in a weekend you were prepared for. You will loose valuable time, and not gain valuable profits. Instead, focus the end of this year on introspective insights and revisit your business by revisiting why you started. Don’t get caught-up in a day of the week. Stay focused on removing things that make you weak. “Remember you’re an heir. Be royal.”

“Password” is a game show created by Bob Stewart for Goodson-Todman Productions. The host was Allen Ludden, who had previously been well known as the host of the “G.E. College Bowl.” In the game, two teams, each composed of a celebrity player and a contestant, attempt to convey mystery words to each other using only single-word clues, in order to win cash prizes.

“Password” originally aired from 1961 to 1967 on CBS, along with weekly prime time airings. An additional 1,099 daytime shows aired from 1971 to 1975 on ABC. The show's regular announcers were Jack Clark and Lee Vines on CBS and John Harlan on ABC.

Two revivals later aired on NBC: “Password Plus” (originally titled “Password '79”) from 1979 to 1982, and “Super Password” from 1984 to 1989, followed by a primetime version on CBS from 2008 to 2009 “Million Dollar Password.” All of these versions introduced new variations in game play.

The theme song used on “Password” from 1961 to 1963 was called "Holiday Jaunt," composed by Kurt Rehfeld. That theme was followed later by "You Know the Password," composed by Bob Cobert, which was used from 1963 until the CBS version's cancellation in 1967 (listen above). When the show returned on ABC in 1971, Score Productions composed "The Fun of It." The theme used later in that version's run, beginning in 1974, was called "Bicentennial Funk," which was used until the ABC version's finale in 1975.

“Password” was most often taped in New York at CBS-TV Studio 52 (later converted to the Studio 54 disco) and CBS-TV Studio 50 (the Ed Sullivan Theater) until the end of the daytime run in 1967. The original CBS version made annual trips to CBS Television City during the 1960s. Mark Goodson opposed a permanent move to Hollywood so the network canceled the series.

The Milton Bradley Company introduced the first home version in 1962 and subsequently released 24 editions of the game until 1986. Owing to common superstition, these releases were numbered 1-12 and 14-25, skipping 13. It was tied with “Concentration” as the most prolific of Milton Bradley's home versions of popular game shows. Milton Bradley also published three editions of a “Password Plus” home game between 1979 and 1981, but never did a version for “Super Password.” Lucille Ball was fond of playing the home game.

At the end, Lucy says her son [Desi Jr.] beats both her and Gary when they play at home. Ludden makes the usual mistake of guessing that her son is named Ricky. Lucy corrects him, smiling. Ludden says that Vivian Vance has challenged Lucy to a game. Vance appeared on the game twice previously, once in 1961, and a second time in November 1963, where she likely issued the challenge. A year later (September 24, 1964 - see below), the challenge was accepted.

When the password is “HARP,” Desi Jr.'s clue is “MARX”, thinking of Harpo Marx, who made a guest appearance playing his namesake instrument on an episode of “I Love Lucy.” The audience audibly gasps at how clever Desi's clue is. Gary gets it right.

In the lightning round, the password is “THUNDER” and Gary's clue is “LIGHTNING,” to which Desi Jr. says “ROUND.” Ludden stops the clock, momentarily confused if Desi is just repeating the name of the game. In that same round, the password is “COWBOY” and Gary's clue is “GUNSMOKE.” Desi responds “CHESTER,” which is the first name of one of “Gunsmoke's” leading characters played by Dennis Weaver.

In the final round, the password is “CARROT” and Desi's clue is “RED.” He was probably thinking of his mother's hair, not the vegetable.

Lucille Ball is introduced as the comedy star of television, motion pictures, and the Broadway stage. Lucy says the new time slot for “The Lucy Show” is 9 o'clock and that Vivian Vance is still with her on the show. She also mentions future guest stars like Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, and Ann Sothern. The show's third season premiered three days earlier on CBS with “Lucy and the Good Skate” (TLS S3;E1).  

Lucy's first partner is James Horn from Hubbard City, Texas. A student, he spent the summer working at the Texas Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. Ludden says that the most popular day at the fair was 'Lucille Ball Day.' The event was held on Monday, August 31, 1964.

Lucy's second partner, Vivian Vance, is introduced as “a housewife from Stamford, Connecticut.” This is indeed where Vance was living at the time, commuting to Los Angeles to do “The Lucy Show.” Vance's appearance is obviously a complete surprise to Lucy, and even to Morton, who is just as shocked to see her. She is playing for a charity called Medi Help.

In round three, Lucy is partnered with Peter Lawford and Gary with Vivian.

Gary Morton is introduced as the star of television and supper clubs. Gary promotes their 15-minute CBS radio show “Let's Talk To Lucy.”  As Lucy tells listeners, “Don't boil water or you'll miss it.” Morton is the show's producer and announcer. Dean Martin, Mrs. Dean Martin, Red Skeleton, Mrs. Red Skeleton, Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are some of the upcoming guests.

Gary's first partner is Kelly Brummer from Denver, Colorado. She is a student with a merchandising major and a French minor, which confuses Lucy.

Gary's second partner is Mr. Peter Lawford. At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy's sister, Patricia. Lawford had an uncredited role (voice over) in the 1945 film Ziegfeld Follies that starred Lucille Ball. He often appeared on Goodson-Todman's other panel shows “What's My Line?” and “To Tell the Truth.” His winnings will go to the Kennedy Library.  

TRIVIA

Trying to get her partner to say “FRECKLE” Lucy is chastised by Ludden to “watch her gestures.” Gary uses the clue “DAY” to get his partner to guess it, to no avail. He is referring to the popular singer and actress Doris Day, who famously had freckles.

As usual, Lucy is startled by Ludden's “Yes!” when she gets it right.  

When the password is “DRAPE” and the clue is “CURTAIN,” Lucy sings a bit of “Everything's Coming Up Roses” from the 1959 Broadway musical Gypsy: “Curtain up, light the lights...”  

During Vivian's entrance applause she and Lucy exchange some barely audible chat: 

Lucy: (to Vivian) “What a wonderful surprise. I was calling and wondering why you weren't home.” Vivian: “I wanted them to introduce me as Mrs. John R. Dodds.”  [Vivian's husband at the time.]

When the password is “PANTS,” Gary gives Lawford the clue “STRETCH” and he guesses correctly. Lucy says she would have thought girdle.

Ludden: (to Vivian) “Does Lucy have a lot of stretch pants?” Vivian: “Yeah.” Lucy: (chiding Vivian) “Don't tell him everything!”

As usual with Lucy, Ludden has to admonish her for gesturing too much.

Ludden: (to Lucy) “Watch those hands!” Vivian: “Oh, she cheats!” (laughs)

While Lawford is thinking about a clue, he tuts at Lucy and Vivian, thinking they are cheating.

Vivian: “Oh, no!  She said I look thinner. We didn't say a word about what was here.” (referring to the word card)

Ludden stops the clock momentarily when Gary inadvertently says the password during the lightning round.

When the password is “FEMININE” and Lawford's clue is “MASCULINE,” Lucy guesses “VERILITY” and then makes a lewd gesture thrusting forward her stiffened arm and clenched fist. She immediately softens it. In a previous appearance she gave her husband the middle finger!

While Lucy and Desi are playing, Gary unwittingly says the last clue “HUNGRY” even though he is not playing. Ball momentarily shoots her husband the middle finger!  [see above photo]

In round two, Ludden starts with the wrong team and shouts “Cut! Cut!” after hearing a voice from the booth. It is unclear whether this was edited out for broadcast, but was left in for the syndicated master print seen on the Game Show Network (GSN).  

Mother and daughter win round two. This time it is Lucille Ball who is startled by the pop-up lightning round passwords.

In round three, Lucie and Desi Jr. are playing for their allowance: 25 cents for each point they earn. Ludden says that they did this the last time they were on. Lucy says if they win too much, they can't have it all at once. The youngsters prevail.

Time runs out before the end of round four, but Lucy and Gary win $250 for their charity anyway. Lucy announces that all the prize money will go to a Child Guidance Center in Los Angeles. 

The announcer promotes that Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows will be next week’s guests. Promoting Desi's upcoming record Ludden says the titles are “We Know” and “Since You Broke My Heart” although Ludden mistakenly says “Your Heart”. Desi quickly corrects him. Although Desi said earlier that the record due to be released soon, Desi failed to realize that the program was pre-taped and would air ten days after the single debuted.

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, so let’s muse some more.

Summer has been and... well it’s still here thanks to the weather, but one thing that has come and gone is E3, well, technically that’s not true, it never came in the first place due to being cancelled because of the pandemic, so instead, publishers, developers and organisations put together their own showcases to help fill the gap. Everyone got involved, the usual suspects such as Xbox, Ubisoft, EA and Sony, to media outlets like IGN, Kinda Funny and PC Gamer, to specific games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Marvel’s Avengers, everyone had their own stream, and with all of them done, I think, it’s now time to look back and ask the questions we’ve been asking for so long, do we still need E3?

We have been asking this question for so long, with the rise of digital events, less people have been attending E3 in favour of watching the press conferences from their home, and speculation has been running wild for years over whether we needed such a big event, but now that we’ve had a year where E3 didn’t happen, we have a better idea of what a future would look like without E3, and......I’m not sure really. I’m in two minds myself, on the one hand, why do you need to travel to Los Angeles to watch trailers when you can do it from home? Nintendo have been doing directs for years now and have seen great success with them, so much so that’s it’s now the standard format for the industry, why put on a giant press conference when you can save money by doing it in video form? On the other hand, something has been missing from this year’s set of showcases, a lack of excitement, a spark, a jolt, its felt a bit flat, and I’m not quite sure what it is.

Let’s take a quick look at some of these showcases, there was Xbox’s “this is gameplay except it isn’t” showcase which set the bar pretty low, it was passable, had some decent games, but didn’t really grab the imagination, there was Sony’s “we’re not taking part in E3 but we totally are” showcase which for my money was the best showcase of the lot, showcasing some great games and keeping things tight. Then there was Ubisoft’s “everyone forget about our harassment problems and look at our games” showcase, which.... moving on, Devolver Digital’s “we went batshit crazy on this and now we can’t go back so we’re gonna keep going” showcase, which I can’t really describe in words, maybe a blood painting could describe it better, and finally Xbox’s “ok this time we’re gonna show you the good stuff we promise” showcase in July which was far better than their previous showcase, still not enough gameplay shown for my liking, but some great games shown. Overall, it’s been a mixed bag of showcases, some of these obviously weren’t planned as expected, but overall, some good and some bad. So now that we’ve seen these offerings, do we still need E3?

In my opinion, yes, but not as it is currently. For starters, you have to remember what E3 is in the first place, or what it used to be, E3 started out as a trade event, a place where developers and publishers could showcase their games to retailers and media outlets, for a long time E3 was never a public event, it was an industry event, only recently has it started opening its doors to the public and becoming a more public event, there was word that E3 was going to shift to a live event experience with stages and special guest appearances. E3 has slowly been transitioning away from the trade side of things, especially now that the industry has been shifting in recent years towards more online and intimate presentations and was starting to move towards more consumer experiences in an effort to stay relevant, this year’s E3 could have been wholly different from any E3 we’ve ever seen, whether we’ll see that next year remains to be seen.

Certainly in terms of numbers, it seems that games are doing just as well, if not better, a recent article by gamesindustry.biz showed that social media activity for games announced during these showcases were around the same, if not higher, than games announced during the conferences in 2019, showing that games didn’t need to be put on stage in order to receive buzz, understandably, more people would have been watching due to more people staying at home, but still, the number are impressive. You also have to look at it from a cost value perspective, if you can get just the same value from doing an online showcase and not attending than putting on a stage show and attending, why wouldn’t you choose the option that saves you more money? Sony got a whole lot of buzz from not attending last year, EA and Xbox get just as much value from having events at the same time but not inside the convention centre, so why wouldn’t you follow suit?

As I’ve already mentioned though, not every event did great, IGN’s 4 day event was complicated and confusing, I didn’t even know The Escapist had an event going on, and then there’s Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, a 4 month long event which is still ongoing as we speak, what a mess that has been. It’s been stringed out for far too long with announcements just popping out of nowhere and events that have passed most people by, and that’s one of my major criticisms, all these showcases have just been spaced out too far apart. Most of these showcases have been happening over June and July, which is still far apart compared to E3, which including the press conferences, happens over the space of about a week or so, it’s all crammed into a small timeframe, this helps boost events that normally wouldn’t happen, events such as The Escapist showcase, or the Day of the Devs event, or the Wholesome showcase, again, I had no idea any of these were happening because it was all too spaced out. I understand major developers and publishers wanting their own time in the spotlight, but sometimes, sharing the stage with someone else helps amplify your own message rather than having it float out into nothingness.

You also have to look at it from another perspective, E3 was our big event, it was the one time the industry came together to celebrate video games and show off the latest and greatest it had to offer, and with that came a lot of coverage the industry normally wouldn’t get, mainstream coverage such as the BBC, Sky, CNN and other networks and outlets that normally wouldn’t cover video games. If you search E3 2020, one of the results you’ll get is ‘E3 2020 replacement’ or a question such as ‘What is replacing E3 2020?’, to me, that shows how big E3 is, the fact that people are asking if there’s a replacement shows how much people want to tune in to E3. Think of this way, you don’t watch football, but you’ll watch the World Cup, you don’t watch American football, but you’ll watch the Super Bowl, some people don’t follow what happens in the industry as much as we do, but they’ll tune into E3 because it’s the biggest event of the year in our industry, without E3, what is our big event? What is our industry showcase? In a way, E3 unites us as an industry.

Then there’s the feeling of these online showcases, yes the games that they show off are impressive, and they wouldn’t really do a lot different if it was on a live stage, but it doesn’t feel right. The energy doesn’t feel the same, the excitement, the hairs standing up on the back of your neck, the shocking reveals of trailers, logos and characters, it doesn’t feel the same. I go back to sporting events, you can watch football from your own home on your tv or listen to it on the radio, but it doesn’t feel the same as when you’re there, shoulder to shoulder with the crowd watching the action. I watched Hamilton for the first time recently on Disney+, a phenomenal musical, absolutely superb, but just imagine what it was like being in the crowd, watching it in the theatre with your own eyes, there’s a feeling around live events that you can’t replicate elsewhere, and the same goes for these online showcases.

I have memories of staying up past 2am in the morning, watching all the showcases, I remember watching the Sony 2013 showcase live in the middle of the night, trying to stay quiet so as to not wake everyone up while still getting excited about everything that happened, the infamous ‘Used games will work on PS4’ drop is one that will go down in history, that moment saved Sony and brought about the PS4 dominance, that type of moment is something you can’t do with an online showcase because they all have to be planned, prepared and edited well in advance. Compared to that, the recent showcases have all felt a bit flat, there’s no real excitement in them, no buzz, they feel too clean and polished. Developers sat in rooms with appropriate decor, reading from highly edited scripts, it all feels a bit dull and boring. Yes it’s nice to get loads of trailers all in one place, but it’s also nice to have something happen unexpectedly, that hasn’t really happened this year, it could be that developers are holding back or schedules have had to be rearranged because of the pandemic, but it’s all just been a bit flat for me this year, some of them just ended up blending into one since they just felt the same.

So, let’s return to the original question, do we still need E3? I say yes, the excitement, the coverage, the feeling of togetherness, nothing can replicate that, as an industry, we need a marquee event, where we can show off our best, but I don’t think E3 itself is gonna be part of that future. Following this year, more developers and publishers are gonna move to online showcases, and why not, it’s cost efficient, but there needs to be some form of event, whatever it may be, it needs to be more compact, something over the period of a week, not 2-4 months, where every developer and publisher has the chance to showcase their games and get their time in the spotlight. It’ll be a shame to not have those live events, but who knows when those will come back, in the meantime though, I will settle for the online showcases, but I want more unpredictability and less scripting. Right, I’m off to think about what the bottom of an avatar’s shoe looks like.

Republicans are tentatively set to move their party to Jacksonville

While the move is still being finalized, the decision to uproot major chunks of the convention from its planned home in Charlotte is another example of Trump disruption, in this case as he casts aside public safety advice and the spirit of a signed contract between the RNC and Charlotte to host the convention there. The president has made clear since a tweet blast on Memorial Day that he was only willing to appear at an event with the pomp and circumstance he enjoyed before the pandemic.

On Wednesday, Trump repeated his criticism of North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D), who has insisted that the Charlotte gathering follow public health guidance. In remarks at the White House, Trump said he had “no choice” but to move the convention’s highest-profile events.

“We’ll see how it all works out, but the governor doesn’t want to give an inch,” Trump said, describing Cooper as “a little backward.”

A spokeswoman for the governor reiterated that his concern was public safety.

“State and local partners have been willing to work together with the RNC on a scaled- down event with health and safety measures, but it wouldn’t be responsible to guarantee a full arena as the RNC has demanded,” said Cooper spokeswoman Dory MacMillan. “State officials will continue to support health and safety aspects of any activities that do remain in North Carolina.”

The quadrennial political meetings, which draw tens of thousands of delegates, officials, media and others in the political orbit, typically set the tone for each political party ahead of the final sprint to the general election. Democrats, facing the same public health dilemma, moved their convention from July to August and since have indicated they will probably opt for a scaled-down convention and are considering doing virtual events.

Guidelines from Trump’s own administration, along with advice from medical experts, make it clear that large-scale events, particularly ones held indoors, can facilitate the spread of the highly contagious novel coronavirus.

Trump, however, told Cooper in a telephone conversation on May 29 that “we can’t do social distancing.” While Republicans offered to do testing at the Charlotte event, they balked at mandatory use of masks and limiting the number of people allowed into the arena where Trump would speak.

The RNC still plans to hold some smaller meetings in Charlotte, and Trump probably would visit the city at some point between Aug. 24-27 when the convention is scheduled, according to a person familiar with Trump’s plan who like others interviewed was not cleared to speak publicly. Republican officials are hoping that will shield them from any liability for moving an event that they are contractually obligated to hold there.

The RNC’s executive committee voted Wednesday to reuse its 2016 platform to avoid requiring delegates to debate and vote on new policies, according to a person familiar with the decision.

“This is going to be a little bit of a different convention because we have right now 75 days to move the celebration portion to a different city,” Republican Party Chair Ronna McDaniel said Wednesday on the Salem Radio Network. She also said she has not gotten any sleep for the past two weeks, since Trump threatened to move the convention via his tweet. “It’s been quite a feat — if we can get this done,” she said.

While McDaniel said it’s “premature” to confirm the new location, three GOP officials briefed on the plan said the RNC has settled on Jacksonville, and one person familiar with the discussions said an announcement about the shift could come as early as Thursday.

Downtown Jacksonville includes three different stadiums, including the covered 15,000-person-capacity VyStar Veterans Memorial arena that was once home to the city’s ice hockey team.

Trump and RNC officials had expressed concern that Democratic officials in North Carolina were working against them for political reasons. In Jacksonville, Trump will have partisan allies in the city and state governments.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry, a Republican who was formerly chair of the state party, did not respond to a text message seeking comment. Aides to the mayor also declined to comment. Jacksonville City Councilman Tommy Hazouri, a Democrat who will take over as council chairman this summer, said he was supportive of the mayor’s efforts to secure the Republican convention.

“We have always been the little train that could. That’s how we got the football team, that’s how we got some of the businesses that have been here,” Hazouri said, referring to the city’s NFL franchise, the Jacksonville Jaguars. “But you still have the issues in front of you no matter what the city — and that is the coronavirus, and you have always a safety issue.”

He said he expected external funding to help shoulder the costs to the city and had faith in the mayor to work out a health plan that would prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the community.

“We can’t do it at the expense of making sure that our own streets and public safety is protected,” he said. “What you don’t want to do is open a Pandora’s box.”

Duval County health officials have been consulting with the city to plan any large events, according to Samantha Epstein, the county’s public health communications director.

“The Department would work with local officials to ensure that all the appropriate measures are being taken with regards to COVID-19 based on the current CDC guidance,” Epstein wrote.

Federal health officials have said that risk of transmission increases at large, in-person events where it is hard for people to remain at least six feet apart. Experts have said that the more people someone interacts with at a gathering and the longer that interaction lasts, the higher the risk.

The CDC guidelines recommend canceling “community wide mass gatherings” when there is “minimal-to-moderate level of community transmission” of the coronavirus — a standard it does not define — and recommend that people over the age of 65 and those with certain preexisting health conditions avoid attending any events with more than 10 people.

But the guidelines also give community leaders discretion to set the cutoff threshold for the size of events “based on the on the current circumstances the community is facing and the nature of the event.”

According to the Florida Department of Public Health, Duval County has identified 1,776 coronavirus-positive residents, with the rate of diagnosis showing no clear direction in recent weeks. There were 208 positive cases identified in the first nine days of June, compared to 251 cases in the nine days before and 183 cases in the nine days before that. There have been 296 hospitalizations in the county from the disease and 55 deaths.

Last month, the CDC issued a report warning about “superspreader” events where the coronavirus might be highly transmissible in certain settings. That report described a choir practice in Washington state in March at which one person ended up infecting 52 other people, including two who died.

“Members had an intense and prolonged exposure, singing while sitting 6-10 inches from one another, possibly emitting aerosols,” the report said. The infections probably took place during a 2½ -hour choir practice attended by 61 members.

Convention delegates tend to be older than the voting public, presenting another problem for Republican organizers. The median age of delegates at both the Republican and Democratic conventions in 2008 was 54 years old, with only 7 percent of Democratic delegates and 3 percent of Republican ones under the age of 30, according to a 2016 study by the American Enterprise Institute using CBS News polling data.

One potential hitch in moving the convention festivities is hotel space: Duval County has about 18,000 hotel rooms, according to Patty Winters, a spokeswoman for Visit Jacksonville, the city’s tourism bureau. Neighboring counties have another 10,000 rooms, Winters said.

In 2005, when the city hosted the Super Bowl, five cruise ships docked at St. Johns River to add about 3,500 hotel rooms needed for the event. Amid the current pandemic, which spread rapidly on cruise ships, it’s unlikely that the RNC would use that solution. Instead, officials are looking at resort areas such as Amelia Island to the north.

Officials in Charlotte were expecting up to 50,000 people under the original setup, although only about 20,000 would have fit into the arena that the GOP had planned to use for major speeches.

Garrett Dennis, a member of the Jacksonville City Council and a Democrat, identified another drawback of hosting the convention: the potential to aggravate what he described as already fraught race relations in a city that is about 30 percent black.

Under the current schedule, Trump would accept his nomination on Aug. 27. In Jacksonville, that is the 60th anniversary of Ax Handle Saturday, when a mob of 200 white people chased peaceful civil rights protesters with ax handles and baseball bats. Events to commemorate that anniversary are already planned in a park not far from where Trump would accept the nomination.

“We’ve had unrest as relates to police and shootings; we have a high murder rate. And so we have our own problems that we’re dealing with right now,” Dennis said. “To have this event here, and coronate someone who is not tolerant of minorities? Our city is already fragile as it relates to racial relations. And for that to happen, our city might crack.”

The sound of success

Enrique Josephs was cooling his jets at LAX waiting for a flight. A call came in on his cell from his agent. A quick trip to the men’s room where he opened up a suitcase on a changing table to reveal his mobile recording studio. Ten minutes later ... mission accomplished. Spot recorded and delivered to the client.

For a voice-over artist, working in strange locations at all hours of the day and night is part of the business. It’s a career that Josephs, better known to his friends as EJ, never even knew existed if not for a chance meeting at a summer event on campus.

It’s already been a meteoric journey for the 26-year old with many big dreams still in his future. Among his credits is work for NFL Films, the History Channel, MLB Network, ESPN and the Emmy-nominated Harry Connick Jr. television show. Along the way though, there were lots of twists and turns and a bit of luck.

Josephs was a highly-recruited football offensive lineman from West Chester. One of his high school teachers, John Adams, the father of a former BU football player Stefan Adams, suggested he give BU a serious look for both its football team and its strong mass communications program.

“The late Mr. Adams really influenced me to attend BU,” said Josephs. “I loved playing football and had dreams of becoming a news anchor. He thought Bloomsburg University would be good for me with both a strong football team and mass communications department.”

“My early goal was to be a news anchor,” said Josephs. Those dreams of being an on-camera celebrity soon changed. “I realized I liked being behind the scenes as an editor or on the radio more. I could let my personality come through without being worried about the camera.”

After his football career ended due to injury, fate would intervene for EJ when former teammate Franklyn Quiteh recommended his friend to the BU athletic department for a job as a PA announcer at the school’s home games. Once the staff heard him on the microphone, Josephs was quickly hired.

“Working as a PA announcer taught me how to make adjustments on the fly in a stressful situation,” EJ continued. “Initially I was fearful of what people would think of my voice, but I grew into enjoying the interaction I had with the fans as well as still being part of a sport without actually playing.”

In the mass comm department, EJ was actively involved in many areas. “I started volunteering more for projects the mass comm department was working on with Jason Genovese, now chair of the department, and Mike DiGiorgio (former assistant in the IT area),” Josephs added.

“EJ always had the talent, the golden pipes, but you need more than that, and he knew it,” said Genovese. “He had a work ethic that has already carried him to great heights in the television industry and will continue to do so.”

“As a senior I attended the first Confer Radio Institute held at BU,” said Josephs. “I met Pat Garrett one of the top voice-over guys. I never knew doing that kind of work could be a career. Pat let us use his equipment to record demos and also told us to keep working and not give up. It was great advice that I never forgot.”

But a journey from ‘keep working hard kid’ to NFL Films doesn’t just happen. Along with skill, EJ needed some luck and a few breaks.

By day Josephs was working as a video instructor at the Glen Mills school for troubled youth. By night he was interning for an independent baseball team, the Camden River Sharks, learning as much as he could and getting tips from the public address announcer Kevin Casey, now the voice of the Philadelphia Union professional soccer team.

On a career day at Glen Mills, an engineer from NFL Films was on site. A co-worker of EJ’s introduced him to the engineer. After a brief conversation, EJ was asked to send in a demo.

“I scrambled that night at home to put something together and quickly sent it in,” Josephs continued. “The company surprised me by calling me in for an interview. It went so well, a few months later I was offered a job as a production assistant, ironically just a few days after landing a full-time position with the school.” (He quickly quit his job at the school.)

EJ’s big break came just months later when he was tabbed to be the voice of the post-game spot announcing the opportunity to purchase gear and a highlight DVD of the Super Bowl. Later he worked

on a highlight film of the Super Bowl becoming the first seasonal production assistant hired for that role.

“I had to sleep at NFL films multiple nights to meet the deadline,” said Josephs. “The same producers who recorded his demo gave him a shot to do the narration on the Super Bowl 50 highlights. It was huge. They loved it.”

Later that year EJ caught another big break and landed a spot as the voice of the NFL’s Top 100 when the original voice of the show was arrested. “I was working with the show’s Emmy Award-winning producer doing some training. After the original voice-over artist was dropped, the producer hired me to be the new voice that year. We had to re-record two episodes which had aired already and now I am one of three regular voices of the program.”

Most recently Josephs did the narration for the History Channel’s summer show “Evel Live,” which was the most-watched live show outside of a sporting event on television in 2018 with more than 3.5 million viewers.

“The production company for the show, Nitro Circus, had heard some of my work and asked me to audition,” Josephs said. “A short time after sending in my audition, my agent called me to tell me I got the job.” Of course, that day was also his first day of vacation in Virginia.

“I had to call a friend, who called someone he knew, and I landed time in a studio. In all, it took about two hours to record all the narration so I didn’t lose too much of my vacation.”

While the profession may seem simple to an outsider, just like an athlete, EJ has to train, practice and of course take care of his most valuable asset…his voice.

“Each week I work with a voice coach because it’s easy to strain the vocal chords if you’re not careful,” said Josephs. “Recently, I went to a concert, but couldn’t scream. I also drink a lot of water, tea with honey, and eat lots of apples. I’ve also stopped drinking milk because lactate creates too much mucus. And, my girlfriend’s grandmother put me on to echinacea and I haven’t been sick in more than three years (knock on wood),” said Josephs laughing.

“Originally I was very hard on myself and would critique all my work,” Josephs continued. “I don’t do it as much now. Now I’m just interested in making sure my clients are happy with my work.”

So what’s next for the guy who originally was hoping to be a news anchor?

“It’s been an amazing few years for me, but I do not want to be complacent,” said Josephs. “I see my future in promos, commercials and narrations. It would be great to be able to do a long-term series for Nat Geo or the Discovery Channel. I’d love to be synonymous with one show.”

“Ultimately, the Olympics for voice-over artists are movie trailers. Right now two guys have most of the work in this area. I’m not rushing things; I’ve still got a lot to learn about the industry. But movie trailers is where I hope to one day land.”

Despite his growing status in the voice-over world, EJ still finds time to give back. “I’m mentoring three young men at my church in the voice-over business and recently spent an hour on the phone with an intern from NFL Films answering her questions. “For me, it’s about helping others on their journey,” said Josephs. “I learned a lot by trial and error. My goal is to help others achieve their dreams.”

Dreams. We all have them. For some, the dreams don’t always come true. For others, like EJ, each day is a dream come true and more exciting than the last. Where that dream takes him, only time and his voice will say.

This Halloween enjoy the festivities with your pets. Integrative Veterinarian Dr. Carol Osborne, DMV offers a few simple safety tips for pets and their owners to help ensure fun for all while trick or treating this season.  1. That bowlful of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can also be hazardous if swallowed. If you suspect your pet has ingested a potentially dangerous substance, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435. 2. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are not toxic but can produce stomach upsets and even intestinal blockage if large pieces are eaten.  3. Keep wires and electric cords taped securely to the floor or covered so your pet doesn’t chew them and risk burning his mouth or getting an electric shock. 4. Elevate candles and potpourri oils, up out of paw reach. Curious pets and kittens can easily knock them over and cause a fire or risk getting burned.   5. Dressing up is fun as long as your pet enjoys it and the costume is safe. Be sure it does not restrict his or her movement, breathing, hearing or sight.  For pets who prefer their “birthday suits,” wearing a costume can be very stressful.  6. All but the most social dogs and cats should be safely confined inside your home during peak trick-or-treat hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful.  7. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, be sure that your cat or dog doesn't dart outside. A leash and collar for dogs and a harness for cats help to ensure your 4-footed friends safety. 8. Proper ID’s please! Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet gets lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip increase the chances that he or she will be returned safely to you.  9. Black cats can be a target for Halloween pranksters. Keep them safely confined indoors and be aware that many shelters will not allow adoptions of black cats over this holiday. 10. Holistic options for pets that may become fearful or stressed by the festivities: cotton balls in your pet’s ears help diminish loud noises and a few drops of Bach’s Rescue Remedy added to your pet’s food or water bowel help to safely calm nerves and relieve stress.
