hhhHHhHh I haven't even SEEN spiderverse yet and I'm already in love with such a stupid specific detail from the trailers,
and that's the way that all the construction cranes frame the background shots of Mumbhattan.
To my eye they sort of orient the setting as the spiders move through it (esp with the rotational(?) shots!), immediately bringing to mind how anchor and frame threads work in spiderwebs!
As a result, to me, Pavitr's whole-body kalaripayattu-inspired web technique reads like throwing radial lines to anchor points on a classic spiderweb!!!
i NEED to see this thing i NEED to stick my face to the screen and watch every frame individually

I tried to come up with a little “spell” to write as a magic circle in the new script (still looking for a name for it, I’m open to suggestions!) and the first thing I could think of was “like to charge, reblog to cast.” So I guess you could put this inside or around another circle?
I think next time I make a circle I’ll try to connect the glyphs a little differently, so you get more of the actual circle and less of a weird lump.
I have also tried a different glyph orientation, but I liked this version better. In this one, each glyph’s “down” is toward the center of the circle. The first glyph is at the top and is upright, and the others rotate as they go around. That means that locally the glyphs read left-to-right, which is not how I’ve used them when writing them linearly.
The other possibility was to have the glyphs’ vertical axis to be the circle rather than radial lines, so a glyph on the right or left point of the circle would be upright and the local direction of reading would be top-to-bottom (as I’ve been writing them linearly). For some reason that one just looked wrong to me, though I’ve only tried it once.

Nikaposting Pt 2: Symbology & Syncretism
This is the second of a series of posts about Nika & associated religious practice in the One Piece world. As I write and post the rest of the series, I’ll add links to this header.

So About That Sun Symbol (and all those sun gods)
Context note: This post assumes you’ve read pt 1. If you haven’t, the TLDR is that the Nika cult is best categorized as a crypto-religion and may not ever have existed outside of a cryptic and oral form.
There’s a lot of sun gods in One Piece. And there’s a lot of appearances of that sun symbol we discussed briefly in pt 1, with the disconnected rays. This post will cover that symbol, the survival of non-Kuma Nika cult branches, and the proliferation of sun gods across the One Piece world.
The sun symbol can be found everywhere, in what seems at first to be a wildly disparate collection of places. There are a number of borderline cases, so I’ll be defining the “Nika sun symbol” as being any symbol with a central circle, disconnected rays, and four- or eight-fold radial symmetry. This leaves us the below list (images of the majority of these instances can be found in this very helpful post):
The Kuma-Bonney/Buccaneer version found in his church and on the amulet he left for her (8 circular rays) ; this is our basic template for the symbol
The Alabasta national symbol (8 droplet-shaped rays; the droplets seem to be drawn at various different orientations depending on the panel)
The Kozuki crest (8 circular rays in the center of a bird in the center of another circle also there’s some sprouts or something)
The Shandian crest (8 circular rays inside a larger circle, also the central circle contains the kanji for kami/god)
The Sun Pirates’ mark (4 more traditional flaring rays; the rays seem to be drawn inconsistently, especially in the anime)
There’s also Ace’s dagger, which has the basic template version, but one can assume he bought that thing in Alabasta or something like that.
From this we can conclude that the sun with disconnected rays is not exclusively a Nika symbol- in fact I would be surprised if it was, because of how prominently it was displayed in Kuma’s church (see the discussion in pt 1). However, Alabasta, Shandora, and Wano are all poneglyph countries, and were all involved in some way or another in [incomprehensible void century muttering]. I would be extremely unsurprised if the sun with disconnected rays wasn’t a more widely-spread popular symbol among [void century muttering] countries back then, which was adopted by Nika worshippers as their secret symbol around that time and simultaneously retained in more benign form by certain nations as an element of their national symbology.
(Sidenote: If you were unaware, Oda snagged this symbol from a castle in his hometown and clearly just seems to enjoy drawing it. However that doesn’t matter to us in meta analysis land. We continue.)
The Nika cult absolutely survived outside Kuma’s family: at the very least, among slaves on Mariejois. There’s a very high chance Fisher Tiger heard Nika stories while enslaved- the compositional similarity of the Sun Pirates’ mark to the base Nika symbol, Jinbe’s pissed off refusal to answer any of Who’s-Who’s questions, Fisher Tiger’s own status as a warrior of liberation, and of course, the Sun Pirates’ name and the importance of the sun to the residents of Fishman Island all point in this direction.
The proliferation of the Nika sun symbol across the world also points, to me, to at least pockets of the Nika cult potentially surviving in cryptic form across the world, like Kuma’s family did, with various levels of conscious awareness about what their rituals and symbols actually mean and what secret seditious knowledge they’re actually carrying.
However! All that said! Not all sun gods are Nikas- At least, not completely.
Upon their arrival at Egghead Island, Dorry and Broggy identified Luffy as the Sun God. However, I contend that Nika was not originally Elbaf’s sun god.
In expository Nika dialogue, Nika is specifically cited as a god of slaves (& as an ethnic or cultural god of the buccaneer people), and the giants as far as we know are (1), not a traditionally enslaved people nor particularly easy to enslave, (2), are based on Vikings & have their own pantheon which includes a god of war, & (3), while I can absolutely see how a tradition of a prolonged fast > feast festival would have evolved around a Nika figure, it does still feel a little strange. That’s supposed to be a Luffy-alike!
Besides this, the Shandian pantheon also includes a sun god, and I think it’s reasonable to assume that the sun god in question existed prior to any awakened user of the Nika fruit running around causing issues (although, more on my thoughts about Joyboy and Shandora in pt 3). Human sacrifice traditions also feel about as odd for a Luffy figure as fasting does, and while obviously Luffy, Joyboy, and Nika aren’t the same person, with the way One Piece’s narrative conventions work they’re probably quite similar.
Solar deities are the lynchpins of many if not most traditions in the real world. Sun’s a very notable noticable thing that follows a set course across the sky and brings light and life! And especially in One Piece, where the sun is also a critical thematic element and motif, I would be surprised if the majority of One Piece cultures hadn’t developed their own sun gods at some point or other.
So, all that said, why were Dorry and Broggy calling Luffy Sun God? Syncretism.
Not every god has a mythical zoan or the things would be wildly more common- only gods and figures with, as @oriigami put it while we were talking about this, a particularly potent wish attached to them. Even fewer gods have awakened mythical zoan users around. So when an awakened user of a sun god’s mythical zoan is running around (and particularly, a sun god with an incredibly potent wish attached, because Nika is a god of liberation as well as the sun, and it’s a god that people wish they could be and emulate as a matter of course), it’s easy to fold them into your mythology as your sun god. Tradition is very malleable! He’s the sun, even if he’s not exactly how you traditionally pictured it.
Traditions are very good at working with what they get, and at the moment what they get is a smiling, laughing pirate captain and liberator of slaves. What could be better?

Class of orchinadae that have muscular tubes on ends of a variating number of rays, can detach and reattach an anterior end to and from the posterior end, and locomote via floundering, tube-based ciliary locomotion, and gymnotiform swimming; vacant cavity exposed to open water on two sides.
Class Urchinkind
Class of orchinadae that have barbed and toxic quills on the end of ray lobes, rays and ends are on non-flexible fixed positions, locomote via rolling and ciliary locomotion during adolescence and reproduction and are stationary during adulthood, vacant cavity exposed to open water on one side.
(AN1 B2-b) Clade: Gridkind
A clade of animals all containing multiple nodes of nerve nets with geometric symmetry, interlinked with collagen and elastin, and using an ammonia salt-based circulation and waste system.
Class Gridkind
Class of clade gridkind that uses full ectothermy, resides in only saltwater, and has cnidocytes lining the outer dermal layer.
(AN1 B2-c) Clade: Prototekradia
A clade of animals with a central organ lobe in a flat disk, using protruding spikes for defense, hunting, and consuming.
Class Spikediscs
Class of prototekradia that are mobile during most of their entire life, use rotational locomotion to move across the seafloor, a buoyant bladder to keep upright, and an exaggerated extension on the sagittal plane.
Class Seamines
Class of prototekradia that are mostly immoble during their life, attach themselves to the seafloor with an armored stalk, use multiple sets of buoyant bladders to raise near the surface of the sea, and a bloated spike-lined posterior end.
Yes, I'm sure you've all noticed the EXTREMELY creative names such as.... STARFISHKIND.... and URCHINKIND..... Again, these are just for namesake and I named these when I was deep in the college semester so my brain was already mush by then.... Both of those classes have a hollow center that they either use for buoyancy, orientation, wrapping around organisms, or rooting. The starfishkind actually typically look more like floundering or odd-shaped walking organisms in the sea, and only form the shape illustrated when latched to an algae/bacterial/fungal filled rock (which is a significant portion of their day lol). Urchinkind depend on the species, but the barbs on the top and sides actually act more like quills than actual urchin spikes, and organisms will typically unfurl or flatten into a bread-dough like shape when docile.

Strange Symmetries #04: Even More Echinoderms
Early echinoderms seem to have gone through an asymmetrical phase before starting to evolving their characteristic radial symmetry. The first truly radial forms had three-way symmetry, but soon a group called the edrioasteroids upped that count to five.
First appearing in the fossil record around 525 million years ago in the early Cambrian, edrioasteroids were mostly shaped like discs or domes, and were immobile filter-feeders that lived permanently attached onto surfaces like the seafloor or the shells of other animals. Unlike most modern echinoderms their pentaradial symmetry was actually created by taking a tri-radial body plan and forking two of their arms near the bases to create a total of five.

Thresherodiscus ramosus was an unusal edrioasteroid that lived in the shallow seas of what is now central Canada during the late Ordovician, around 460-450 million years ago. Up to about 4cm in diameter (~1.6"), its arms split additional times at irregular intervals, creating a complex asymmetrical branching pattern across its upper surface.
The tips of its arms protruded slightly over the rim of its body, and along with the erratic extra branching this may have been an adaptation to increase its food-gathering surface area.

Another group of early pentaradial echinoderms known as the blastozoans were characterized by erect feeding appendages called brachioles. But some blastozoans abandoned their five-way symmetry in favor of much stranger arrangements, sometimes having as few as two arms – and, in some cases, two mouths.

Known from the same general area and time period as Thresherodiscus, Amygdalocystites radiatus was part of an Ordovician-to-early-Silurian lineage known as paracrinoids, which attached their irregularly-shaped bodies to the seafloor via a stem.
About 5cm long (~2") Amygdalocystites had just two asymmetric arms forming "food grooves" along its upper edge, each lined with numerous long brachioles along just one of their sides. It probably orientated itself so its body was facing down-current, which would have created eddies that brought suspended food particles within easier reach of its brachioles.

Spectember day 5 - leviathan planet fauna
4 different animals from the leviathan planet, starting off with what I’ve dubbed squidfish & raybirds. they share a distant common ancestor from which they inherited the same body plan, but they went in completely different directions with it
both are characterized by their radially symmetric body, with 4 eyes and a + shaped mouth. squidfish are the ones that stayed aquatic, with 4 large, flat tentacles to propel them through the water, and 4 fins along the body that they can move around as needed to help with steering. to a squidfish, all 4 sides are “up” and they can orient themselves whichever way they need to

raybirds migrated onto land and almost immediately took to the skies, turning their fins into wings. unlike squidfish, raybirds are limited to one specific side being up and one being down. two of their torso appendages have morphed into wings, with bony spurs used in offense and defense. the other two are attached to fans that male raybirds use to show off to potential mates. the top two tail appendages have attached to the wing membrane and assist in flight, with the other two growing strong and acting as a teeny little pair of legs

Even the S aside, this is just an awful image. Every single detail in it is terrible and super messy. I think I would have to write a whole essay to point out just how badly this was put together, but every element is in the wrong place, badly sized, poorly oriented, etc. Random elements, such as poorly placed giant buttons, earrings, press badge, which don’t exist in the same space as the figure. Even Lex is mirrored with the pocket on the wrong side, not to mention his ear growing out of his cheekbone. But Superman is just a disaster with a dislocated shoulder, that weird leg with random muscles, the cape which is bizarrely much thicker on one side than the other, the disaster of his neck/traps/collarbones/whatever the hell is going on there. Than random pigeons and a castle thrown in with completely illogical starbursts and radial blurs in every which direction to obscure and smudge it all. The S is just the most blatant detail, but make no mistake this really is a genuinely awful bashing of found elements, generated or otherwise. I never make posts like this, but this guy has been a blight on our industry for so damn long and he seemingly has no remorse as he just keeps on doing it.
Lazy hack gets called out for being a lazy hack, DC Comics yawns, cuts lazy hack another paycheque.

It's called the radius because it rotates like that! It's one of my favorite bone facts!

See! The radial head is literally like a little wheel! Which lets it twist around the ulna, which remains in place. Or rather, the ulna can move too, but it just opens/closes your elbow. Both bones support your arm together, and each allows for a different kind of movement, making for a super dynamic limb!
Compare that with your shin and it's bones, t the tibia and fibula:

They're oriented somewhat similarly, but the fibula doesn't rotate around the tibia the same way; instead of a wheel it's basically got a little notch it just stays slotted into. That's why your foot doesn't rotate the same way your hand/forearm does, but we don't need it to! That limb's for walking, and our arms are for manipulating objects.
But yeah your bones are always moving! They're supposed to, and they are built to do so comfortably and efficiently with the other bones they connect to!
