Ivan was another early design who was actually scrapped before returning for Rough Sketch. His concept never changed, but RS almost changed him into the ultramarine Maurice. These designs were ultimately touched up and recycled into Damson and Alphonso respectively.

From then on, the only change ICT gives him, aside from a brief stint of having white pupils, is his far more cocky attitude.

And great question! Wax seals are the universal way to seal envelopes (there isn't any lickable adhesive on the ones in Blest), so everyone uses them, not just nobles! For Shepherd communiques, everyone just uses the official stamp, which is the symbol of the Order, but for personal messages, they use their own individual seals! These are:

Blade: when speaking as himself and not as Commander Bronwyn, he uses a generic wax seal featuring a pair of crossed swords and a shield, which is commonly used enough that it can't be traced back to him or recognized by strangers at just a glance

Trouble: he uses a generic rampant lion seal he got at a store, though he claims to want to a custom one with a bullet on it

Tallys: she uses the coat of arms for the Ironwood clan, which is basically a broad oak tree with many roots spreading through the ground, so it almost looks like a reversible image

Shery: she generally uses a butterfly seal, though she has also been known to use a pair of doves carrying a flower, depending on the occasion

Riel: he uses a custom monogrammed seal with his initials, and it's very official and definitely a huge flex, because when people see that wax seal with the RS on it, they know what's up

Chase: he uses a seal with a running fox on it, though he has also been known to use one with a corsair's ship on the sea or a rose and dagger to confuse interlopers

Silver seals are considered neutral and are usually the 'default' color

Gold seals are used for matters of business, such as contracts or messages about exchanges

White seals are used exclusively for invitations, generally weddings or celebrations of a child's birth

Black seals are always used for delivering news of death or for letters of condolences and mourning; you do not want to get a black seal on a letter...

Plain, dark red seals are used for matters of urgency and indicate that an immediate response is needed

However, bright red seals mixed with gold or pink mixed with gold are generally romantic in nature. The symbol used for the seal here also generally matters. Like, don't use a seal with an anchor if you're trying to tell the person "let's keep things casual!"

Dark blue seals are for romantic matters of great urgency and passion: for example, a marriage proposal by letter would have a dark blue wax seal. Purple is also used, though this is rare; it indicates that the letter's contents are steamy, which is not generally something people want to advertise

Light green (sometimes mixed with gold), sky blue, or plain pale pink are used for casual letters between friends. The pale pink is more commonly seen among younger people below 18, such as schoolfriends, but it's not that unusual for adults to use it, especially for friends they've known since childhood

Reading life of Rabelais - breakfast at 9 55/.. - afterwards changed my dress and went out at 11 1/4 with the girls and Miss Hyriott - walked along the cliff to Tuton Burry pretty enough (burry what the Scotch call den) in 35 mins. [minutes] - then went down upon the sands, and sauntered along picking fossil shells from out of the clayey cliff - near Barton (the preventive service station) large nodules of indurated clay which when broken shew a cristallization in the middle and sometimes remains of water - got rather uncertain about the tide - hurried on - not at first seeing the track up the cliffs to Barton, went a little too far, then returned, found the track, and hardly stopt till we had got to the top - Mrs. Dent has a good collection of fossil shells near there - had not time to ask to see it - it suddenly came in foggy, and soon turned to small rain which the highish wind drove against us -

Home in 3/4 hour at 2 1/4 - rather wet - changed my dress - at 3 1/4 went with Lady S- de R- [Stuart de Rothesay] in the chariot to Xst.chch. [Christchurch] to the post and to Mrs. Ridout's multifarious shop - in returning Lady S- [Stuart de Rothesay] left her card for old Lady Londonderry (ætatis 70 and very deaf) at Belvidere, a nice little place very near here -

Home at 4 1/2 - sat reading a little of Miss Berry's book and talking to Lady S- de R- [Stuart de Rothesay] dressed - dinner at 6 1/2 - coffee - tea - afterwards the girls danced Miss Hyriott or danced with or played for them - Lady S- [Stuart de Rothesay] too played for them and they did not leave us till 10 1/2 - then asked her to sing which she did from book and memory till twelve I standing over the whole time no occasion to say much I merely looked all attention said if one learnt life from songs how pretty it would she smiled and answered yes then by and by said how pretty Mores songs were how much of constancy yes but some were contradictory and all for inconstancy 'but I dont think inconstancy makes half so pretty a song' she smiled and said nothing and I made no further attempt

What is the point of a story? When you are writing fiction, what is the purpose? Why must your imaginary adventure be heard? It is because you have a thought, a recognition, an insight that you haven’t heard addressed before; you have a theme (maybe several!) to share with the world. I’d like to show how musical Razia’s Shadow (RS) expresses its theme through the sum of all of its parts; then you, too, can follow their example and effectively apply themes in your stories!

According to Gotham Writers Workshop, a theme isn’t a lesson or moral; it’s a new angle on the human condition. Just as there are right or wrong ways to write stories, there are right and wrong ways to apply a theme. Famous novelist Flannery O’Connor defines the “right” application as “When you can separate [the theme] from the story itself, then you can be sure the story is not a very good one. The [theme] of a story has to be embodied in it, has to be made concrete in it.”

 The theme of RS, as repeated through the musical, is:

“The unrelenting constancy of love and hope

Will rescue and restore you from any scope”

-The End and the Beginning, Lines 66-67

In less poetic terms, no matter how dismal circumstances seem, you can rely on love and hope as eternal concepts. Like O’Connor said a good theme should, all of RS is tied to emphasizing this one point.

 RS’ begins its discussion of love and hope by giving the world a problem to be saved from. A slighted angel lashes out at his loved ones, and as punishment for his actions, the world is torn into two halves. Ironically, the angel’s betrayal stems from misunderstanding the intentions of people who love him. As a result of his punishment, both halves of the world, incomplete without the other, suffer and are doomed to fall to ruin unless they can be reunited. Act I perverts the images of love and hope through misunderstanding and tragedy, and now they must be righted.

 Act II shows how love and hope can now save the world. The angel’s descendant, the protagonist, realizes he must revert his ancestor’s wrongs through “an act of love.” Many trials come against him, but he remains faithful–hopeful–in the purpose of his mission, allowing that hope to push him through each and every test. In the final scene, the protagonist must take a dagger meant for his love interest, committing the “act of love,” needed to reunite the world. He lays dying in his brother and love interest’s arms, at peace; his hope in his “destiny” has finally culminated. RS’ theme of love and hope saving the day is fully realized, and the story can come to an end.

 A theme gives an audience, as well as a writer, a reason to care about the story. When the theme is woven in, inseparable from the characters and events that take place, it can challenge an audience’s way of thinking, go against popular ideas, or present new insights about the human condition. Themes are why storytelling and all the intricate pieces and parts that go into it are so important to not just writers, but an audience. The theme is also why RS is so important to me, and why I love to talk about it so darn much! Now, I’d like to let RS sum this up for me:

“So this is my cue of where to leave you

Now it's your story to retell and pass on

Because an idea is only relevant if it's being thought upon”

It’s E. E. Cummings week (16/09/19 – 22/09/19)!1 I hope you’re as excited as I am for a week devoted to celebrating one of the most original and innovating bisexual poets of all time! ;^)

I love the combination of order and chaos in this poem. It disregards the conventional rules of presentation and versification, opting instead to create its own structure and harmony. The way most good poetry is pleasing to the ear, this poem is enjoyable simply to look at.

I think that the appearance of this poem reflects its content in some way. The harmony and symmetry employed evoke calm and peace, and because of the visuals, the poem is clearly meant to be read and and regarded, not — as most poetry — heard. This gives it a sense of constancy, because instead of passing words we have an unmoving construction of letters. We view it more like a painting — a sculpture, even, given its focus on shape.

The poem is somewhat difficult to understand and parse at first — though this could be viewed as a flaw, I think it forces us to examine the intricacies of its construction more closely and thus makes us appreciate it more. And there really is much to appreciate! ;^)

I rate this poem 9/10 grasshoppers.
