Remembering the legendary cartoonist #RKLaxman on his 103rd birth anniversary (24/10). Best known for his iconic creation The Common Man and the daily cartoon strip You Said It in The Times of India, Laxman’s sharp wit and biting satire captured the essence of India's political and social landscape for over five decades. His work provided a voice to the everyday struggles of the common Indian, often exposing the absurdities of bureaucracy and politics.
Beyond his political cartoons, Laxman also made a mark in Bollywood. He created memorable caricatures of Bollywood stars, most notably in the 1955 film Mr. & Mrs. '55, where his sketches added a humorous flair to the film. Additionally, he designed the beloved mascot "Gattu" for Asian Paints, which became an iconic symbol in Indian households.
His illustrious career earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism.
What are your favorite memories of R.K. Laxman’s work?

MILKING ASPIRATIONS (My 2nd piece in a series which will take a lifetime to finish, it's about my explorations about where 'Indianness' stands today. The writing is my attempt to explain one of my life's fondest and longest personal projects in human behaviour: Psyche of the Indian crab!) The Indian story will be a story of consumption, created by an apathetic political class. Which had only one intent - drive a new form of economic slavery through a population boom and then milking the citizen's needs through controlling supply and taxation. Our needs and wants are full of opportunities, which foreign investors, brands and makers will reap for the next 4-5 decades. But where did all this start, did we become this juggernaut of frenzied consumers all of a sudden? NO! Our #demographic #dividend has arisen meteorically alarmingly since 1947. When the reigns to rule India simply transferred from the British Raj to the Nehru Raj. As we have for 1000s of years, Indian’s again were slaves - albeit with a new name, a new passport, a new tax system, fake freedom and a flag they were allowed to call their own. The foreign masters, continued to run the country indirectly, through the powerful hands of a FreeMason family, the Nehru family (Motilal Nehru’s photo hangs proudly on the main walls in UK, for those keen to see the proof of the pudding we are in today). The party Nehru highjacked was a foreign idea, to channel the steam of the pressure cooker we had become, so how could we have expected anything different. This power hungry political class refused to build an idea of India, or set a vision. They went into a long term plan, to make us reproduce to ensure we always needed more than we could get or afford or were given!!! They refused to control the population, it has become a joke with caste and religion bases Census which the British started to divide and rule. And the new political class was indifferent, as they began to skew the numbers. Did not take or under-reported census figures from geographies where certain new religions were mushrooming, as these religions were funding the parties and their extravagances. So much so, that even today population control is the single largest elephant in the room. And no one will talk about why families who have had children post the 1980s with more than 2 children aren’t taxed more? Aren’t given access to welfare schemes etc. The burden of the unplanned is borne by the planned, dichotomy and silence on this must be deafening to those who see for what it is.
India's #demographic #dividend is not a boom, it is a curse, for the people living within the cage of opportunity - created by the apathetic political class, cutting across party lines, as is obvious today. We will soon run out of non-pesticide and non-GM food, non-packaged water, non-polluted living spaces and many more. That too in a land which for 1000s of years was the land of abundance, how did we finish everything in less than 100 years? This intentional plan to not control population is the true story of ‘milking aspirations’, which can be witnessed in many countries, most starkly to me reflected in the cartoon here by RK Laxman, the aam aadmi will be standing with the kernel, while the mango juice will be above a glass ceiling for majority of India. A look at the latest income disparity report will rest any of you ruffled feathers. #apathy of the Indian #politicians and #bureaucracy since #independence is captured with the simplicity of a genius by #RKLAXMAN https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._K._Laxman This cartoon is a dark mirror, which reflects a greed driven pattern, usually seen in depraved dictators. Of allowing citizens to spend any amount they desire, to own desirable objects, yet at the same time not allowing them to enjoy what they bought. That is a post for a later date :-)

From - Idle Hours - RK Laxman --- He was about to drop the twig, ant and all and re-join his friends when he discovered to his horror that the ant which ought to have been somewhere near his finger was nowhere to be seen!
He shivered with fright at the thought that it could have climbed over his fingers and got lost in his sleeves.
He frantically looked for it all over his coat and on the ground. It had completely vanished.
With an uneasy feeling he joined the group. But His Excellency, the Viceroy of India had already gone.
The gathering dispersed rapidly. "I saw him so close." announced one of his friends. 'I liked the horses.' said another. 'He is no doubt a man with a great personality' Gopal heard the drill master remark.
At home his mother asked as she removed his coat to fold it and put it back into the wooden box, "Did you have a nice time?"
'Yes'
'Did you have a good look at the Viceroy?'
'No'
"Why?"
"I was busy."
