The whole weezer family is devastated by the loss of our friend and mentor Ric Ocasek, who passed away yesterday. Ric meant so much to us. He produced 3 key weezer albums, Blue, Green and 2014's "Everything...", and taught all of us so much about music, recording and songcraft. But more importantly he taught us that one can be in a respected position of great power and yet be absolutely humble and have the biggest sweetest heart in the industry. Ric was so kind to us, and never faltered or changed a thing either professionally or personally in the 3 different decades we worked with him. When you were his friend, it was for life, and he was always as generous as could be with his time and care. He is the only producer to have worked with all 7 current and past weezer members, and all 7 love and loved working with him and hanging out with him. There is a massive hole in weezer's heart now. We will miss him forever, and will forever cherish the precious times we got to work and hang out with him. Sad news Ric Ocasek, frontman of the popular late 1970s and 1980s band the Cars, was found dead in his New York home on Sunday. He was 75. PRODUCER DOES WHAT AGAIN, no. 1. In the airport on the way out a couple days ago I was in the bathroom with the good acoustics enjoying “Buddy Holly,” now an airport bathroom oldie, smiling because I had listened to this a few days earlier (#latergram!) since it turns out it was produced by Ric Ocasek which I had not registered before Ric died but it adds up just fine since this is a perfect debut album, just like The Cars debut album, which the band had yet to top (like The Cars) (don’t come at me with your Weezer nerd logic, this is perfect and almost no bands get to have two perfect albums). It’s literate, it’s catchy, it’s funny, it’s poignant, it’s rocking, it’s pretty. Good job, Rivers. Good job, Ric. Ric Ocasek in a 1980 Polaroid by Andy Warhol. We now know that the enigmatic Car’s singer was claimed by complications from heart disease yesterday. My first recollections and ultimately appreciation of the man and his band were decidedly deferred, not arriving until 7th grade and largely from the benefit of MTV. “Magic” and “You Might Think” were the stuff of awkward summer crushes and within these videos Ric was an alienesque maestro. There was a silly debate in the mid-80s about the sexuality of men who wore a single stud in their right lobe; Ric certainly dispelled that (I mean: Paulina, right?) He was older than my father and infinitely cooler. Sometime in the early 90s, the Pixies cited the Car’s influence on them; Black Francis likened their instrumentation to that of muted Ramone’s chords. My final image of Ric was during their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year. During the ceremony a couple of his band mates had a first-go at their speeches and all the while Ric was visible in the background continually chatting up their presenter (that singer from The Killers) THE ENTIRE TIME.
