I'm so sad, my heart is with Manchester and all those affected. There is more good than bad in our big, scary, beautiful world, that's important to remember in difficult times like this. There were hotels taking in children who couldn't find their parents and taxi drivers giving free rides. There is always someone helping. The doctors and nurses and law enforcement's that have been tirelessly working. There is a light that never goes out. ✨✨✨

I never really felt bad about having powers. When I got them, I kinda thought it was just something that everyone gets once they hit a certain age, and it was just so normal that no one spoke about it. Everyone can turn into animals, right? But then I started hearing the word ‘metahuman’. And I realised I was more like them, not like everyone else. This wasn’t something that mom could do and just never spoke about it. This was out of the ordinary.

Day 7! :)

12 Days of Crossmas - Day 7 - Harley Quinn decides she wants to join Glee club - and makes it her mission to make Ivy join, too.  Wordcount: 2857 (Illustration credit: Bethany Grace)

“Red! Check it out!”

I swear, she gets out of my sight so quickly. I don’t even realise she’s left my side most of the time, and then I turn around and she’s petting a dog, or beating up some guy. But this time, she’s just peering through the door of the auditorium, the muffled sounds of some 80’s song just about making it out into the hallway. I saunter over to where she is, her face grinning so wide it’s cracking the lipstick on her face.

Inside, of course, is the glee club. I’ve gotta admit, coming to look at them is quite entertaining. They’re sometimes in crazy outfits, or doing dance routines that are way beyond their abilities. The best times are when they’re trying to rap. As I peer through the small window, I can’t help snigger – they’re doing something that looks like an overly jazzy catwalk. But then, we both gasp, seeing a familiar face strut to the front of the stage.

DAY 6 !!!

12 Days of Crossmas - Day 6 - Bellatrix Lestrange in Arkham Asylum Wordcount: 875 (Illustration credit: Bethany Grace)

Arkham Asylum was home to people in beyond imaginable situations. Many of the patients considered themselves to be magical, lost without their wand to aid them. And some of them would also quake in fear, warning the doctors that he who must not be named was coming for them, coming for all of them. And then, there were the others who warned them the same thing with a glint of excitement in their eyes.

Bellatrix Lestrange was perhaps the most exaggerated example of this. With wild, ragged brown hair and wilder eyes, her appearance was only the beginning of her untameable nature. Workers at the asylum would yell at her, spit at her, even abuse her, but she would laugh the whole way through with a bone shattering cackle. They would never ask her about her precious you-know-who, though. At least, never like they believed her. Doctors normally treated her as if she was crazy, as though someone had started a rumour to make the patients paranoid and tried to work out where the idea of him came on. But these doctors were ones she’d never seen before. And they certainly thought he was more than an idea.

Kira closed her eyes. With a heart full of hope, she thought of the happiest memories she could muster, unsure if some of them had ever really happened. She felt the joy warm her spirit, spreading all through her body until it reached the very tips of her fingers where she was clutching her wand, waiting to say the words. She’d been working on this spell for months, and now, she was sure she was finally ready to cast it. The spell that was not only beautiful and protective, but would reveal a witch or wizard’s inner being. She smiled, confident she had reached the peak of her joy, and drew a deep breath.

“Expecto Patronum!”

She opened her eyes. The room around her was full of magic dummies and tools, and one very unimpressed friend. Malia’s eyes narrowed, her arms already crossed over her chest.

His boots barely made a noise on the cold, leaf-ridden floor. The Hummel family weren’t known for their grace, but Kurt was a happy exception, holding his weapon ready at his side while quietly skulking through the woods. The sun was just beginning to set, but the light through the thickets of trees meant it was already hard enough to see things in the distance. He didn’t mind, though. His eyes were hyper sensitive, used to picking up the smallest movement. And his ears were almost as good as the creature in his vision.

Day 3 !!!! 

12 Days of Crossmas - Day 3 - Cisco Ramon discovers something strange about Glee club… (Illustration credit: Bethany Grace)

Cisco Ramon wasn’t one to stand out at school. Aside from some outstanding grades in the sciences, and a position on the football team, he never really got much recognition. He didn’t mind, though – he made it that way. It wouldn’t be easy making secret inventions with stolen school equipment if he was surrounded by lots of people.

It wasn’t like he didn’t have any friends, though. He was a natural people person, and was often asked to hang out after class or after a game, but he rarely said yes. It was one thing to take the things he needed undetected, but another to seamlessly disappear into a classroom where he could make and hide things. He’d tried it all – from under the bleachers, to disguising his work in the lab, and even hiding under a table in one of the lesser used classrooms. But he had a lot of close calls, and he really couldn’t face trying to explain exactly what he was making.

Which turned him to a completely different hiding place. The school’s auditorium was only ever used during productions or rehearsals, and those were easy to track. Plus, there was plenty of space to hide and sneak out if anyone came in. He could store certain parts under seats, and if he needed more room, there was always the props room backstage. It seemed perfect.

His current inventions were all to do with saving bees. Since a science lesson that had focused heavily on the decline of bees, he’d become obsessed – and, much like how a lot of his other inventions were born, decided to dedicate his time to creating things that could help. This was at least safer than when he was obsessed with Bond films, which would have got him in a lot more trouble if he’d been caught.

Day Two!!!!

12 Days of Crossmas - Day 2 - Luna Lovegood at Star Labs (Illustration credit: Bethany Grace)  (Trigger warning for protagonist’s recent death of her mother)

I’m still not used to walking in to the lab by myself. Father keeps asking if I want him to come with me, but I couldn’t accept. I don’t want him to feel it too.

The lights flick on as soon as I walk in. White walls greet me the same way they always did, but the quiet is very new. None of my mother’s soft humming as she prepares the lab. I occasionally find myself doing it, singing the wonderful little tunes she used to sing. It’s nice, in a way. Like a little part of her is still here. A couple of her gadgets are still on the side, as well as a newspaper from the day she died. I still remember how excited she sounded when she read it out to me. ‘Particle accelerator to be turned on today.’ I swallow a lump in my throat.

Day 1 !!!!!!

12 Days of Crossmas - Day 1 - Harley & Ivy at Hogwarts (Illustration credit: Bethany Grace)

“I still can’t believe you talked me into this.”

Ivy’s eyes narrowed at her best friend, who returned her look with what could’ve been described as angelic, if it wasn’t coming from Harley Quinn. They were stood over a steaming cauldron, after Ivy had received an owl earlier that day with a message reading ‘meet me in the potions classroom at midnight, love Q’. It was hardly the first time they’d done this. Harley and Ivy’s seven years at Hogwarts was made up of endless midnight endeavours, from creating not-exactly-legal potions to slip into the teachers’ drinks, to creating a secret den in the forbidden forest, and even breaking in to various hidden passages at the school where they found valuable objects. By day, they were Pam and Harleen, two straight A students with unique style. But by night, they were a team you did not want to get in the way of.
