David Berman has this extended bit/tangent/tirade in one of his poems where he describes 70s/80s talk show hosts (naming a good few) in like really horrific and scathing terms and its really fun for someone who also thinks talk show hosts are some of the least human humans of all time. He wouldve been the goat insult comic.
Its this: "...Gene Rayburn, the retired game show host whose grotesque aura still haunts the seven o'clock time slots of my body's internal clock along with Merv Griffin, Don Rickles, Cloris Leachman, Bert Convy, Wink Martindale and the tenants of every Hollywood square; those horrible hucksters, sickening adult/hyenas who seem to have had their protégés on every Main Street, the men with perms, tight gray curls erupting over the alcoholic topography of their oiled faces, a legion of salesmen ruined by bad translations of an already disastrous California ideal, their eyes stinking like boiled cocktail onions as they emerged from "sleek" 1980 Thunderbirds, all marinated teeth and snowplow mustaches, fresh from invigorating divorces, dragging tawny S-shaped girlfriends by the wrist to wooden gargoyle waterbeds where stereo systems built into the headboards played "Eye in the Sky" by the Alan Parsons Project endlessly throughout the night.
"These men quietly disappeared sometime during the first Reagan Administration. If the Mirrornauts did come for them, then they must have leapt down through the bedroom ceilings, and the men must have woken up screaming as their carpeting was ripped up, the aquariums smashed with baseball bats, and then angry, insane, "my ex-wife is behind this isn't she," obscure cuss words, now lost to us, spilling out of their fat mouths."

my head’s spinning and feels like it got bonked. i just had the gnarliest dream of my family and i meeting Mark Hamill, and him getting on with my little cousins. we’re behind media barricades with a friend of mine, during a movie premiere for i don’t know what, waiting for the cast so we can go inside. then here comes Harrison Ford with two co-stars, and the fans out front behind the other barricades were going insane. and Mark Hamill, who’s with my little cousins a few yards behind us, goes full on Don Rickles on Harrison lmao once he saw him he starts ripping his ass apart with insults, and Harrison cracks up laughing and walks over and gives him a hug. and Mark introduces my little cousins to Harrison and the other two, and he’s patting them on the back and chatting with them. i turn to my mom and friend saying how i’m regretting not getting this on video and how i’m going to remember this forever. then i look back and Evangeline Lily is giving my little cousins a hug :’) then we go inside to what looked like a spacious break room, and the rest of the cast who didn’t catch what Mark said to Harrison asked us what happened, and when we told them we were laughing so damn hard that there were tears. and David Bautista was wearing a fan made t-shirt that had designs of all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies on it graffiti style, and he was showing it to me and he was so impressed with it and love it, and was walking around showing it to anyone else who didn’t see it yet. and there ends my dream.

I’m still kinda distressed by the fact Toy Story 4 is four months away and we still haven’t gotten news of who will voice Mr. Potato Head.

I barely followed Don Rickles during his life, and yet I know this was a well-done tribute. It was emotional and meaningful and spoken by the right person with the uttermost degree of respect and sincerity.

These ARE the Days

Here’s how much I loved Don Rickles. When I was 14 years old instead of hanging out with the other teens at the playground of our apartment building in Tarzana I sat in my Dad’s air conditioned blue Dodge listening to his “Hello Dummy” eight track tape over and over again. Until my Dad lectured me about car batteries. How much ya weigh, Tiny? You’re an Arab and I’m a Jew…And to all my Mexican…
