Whew.
Okay.
I think I'm too tired to keep spamming Starset.
I need sleep.
But it's been awhile since I hyperfixated on a thing that hard and felt that much sheer JOY about it.
I will say that Brave New World was a hyperspecific instance of hyperfixation that started it tonight... ;P
But I'm going to be reading the novel(s) this weekend.
'S' in parenthesis because I don't know if I'll have time to FINISH both... but I do HAVE both! I'll only be reading them at home because as SOON as ABHotF came out, they stopped selling The Prox Transmissions on their website? So uhh. I may have gotten a collector's item. Thank you, ebay!
Anyways, I'm not carrying them in my bag because they're both paperback because that was The Only Option and also the second novel is SIGNED. So. Nope. Not letting THAT guy get beat up in my day bag.
(Kinda tempted to find a .pdf pirated copy to read for the same reason I burned my Fully Legally Obtained CDs. Just so I wear out the COPY instead of the original in use.... but alas. My eyes get sore reading white-background black-text files anyways and I really strongly do prefer a physical book. And I don't have any kind of kindle-y thing.)

Hidden Systems: Water, Electricity, the Internet, and the Secrets Behind the Systems We Use Every Day by Dan Nott. RH Graphic, 2023. 9780593125366. 266pp.
I frequently listen to the 99% Invisible podcast, but that's generally the extent of the information I get on infrastructure.
Nott's amazing graphic novel pulled me in in a way few nonfiction comics have; I don't think I've ever read this complete an explanation of the water cycle including the problems humans create, solve, and need to address. The chapters on the internet had me noting buildings in Seattle that I walk past without seeing, anonymous places full of servers and other tech that I don't really understand (but should). Nott explores history to show how we've arrived at where we are now, shows us the way things work (there's a quote on the cover from David Macaulay), and makes us aware of current and potential crises. In other hands this would be overwhelming, but Nott's work invites further exploration of the topics he covers.
There's a lot to love in this nonfiction graphic novel, but my favorite parts are the pages from Nott's sketchbooks at the end; looking at them after reading the book gave me a glimpse of how his mind works. He also includes notes and a selected bibliography.

I'm working on adding some more graphic tees to my Ko-Fi, so far most of them are horror or horror-adjacent stuff, but I'm open to suggestions.
This shirt fits a fairly wide amount of dolls (hence why I went with this style). On original, petite, and tall Barbie, RH/SH girls, and MH boys, the shirt will fit oversized. On curvy Barbie, Ken, and RH boys the fit will be more standard. I'm hoping to add another size for the thinner MH dolls, but the graphic placement is so much smaller idk how I'll go about doing it yet.
Pants are from ily 4ever Cruella.

It's really a testament how Monster High's characterization and world building is enough to go head to head with against Rainbow High's doll quality.
Now I'm not saying its necessary to like the character but I am saying it can help quite a lot.
MH makes it so you don't just get a doll you want to get a doll of the character, the doll of the character's friends, the doll of the character's family, the doll of the character's enemy etc (what I'm trying to say is an emotional attachment to a character can really help.)
Characterization is a huge key of MH (especially since the web series came out BEFORE the dolls.) Plus MH didn't just rely on the web series to do that but had various other media to get into the series like the movies, books, and graphic novels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dolls originally even came with their own diaries!
Tumblr media
Can the same even be said of RH? I mean the very first MH ep quite literally introduces us to the ghouls while RH sets up a plot thread about Violet drifting away from Sunny by applying for different dorm rooms that isn't touched upon until A WHOLE SEASON LATER! (and don't even get me started on the mess that was Rainbow Vision)
Tumblr media
Not mention the lore and world building of MH like the Vampire's Heart, the origin of the school itself, Cleo being entombed with her family for thousands of years and being betrayed by Amanita.
Meanwhile RH has never even explained why Shadow High students look like this
Tumblr media
Its just kinda funny to me how Mattel made their big high school doll line and that MGA is doing the same but are flopping in a considerably crucial aspect of it.

Hi Jenn - I was wondering whether there is any discernible difference between being published by a big 5 imprint that has the same name as the overall house (ex. the Random House imprint itself), vs an imprint under the same house but with a different name? Are you more likely to be a lead title and get more marketing support if you are being published by the former? Is there more implied prestige? Thank you <3
Short answer: no.
But since you probably want a longer answer:
In case you don't know it, most publishers, particularly large and VERY large publishers, are broken up into "groups" and "imprints" -- that is, different brands all under the umbrella publisher. This goes for ALL the big publishers, but I'll focus on PRH since that was your example:
Penguin Random House is broken up into multiple "groups" and within those groups are multiple imprints. << (that link shows all the groups and their imprints!)****
The two groups you mostly would be familiar with on the kids side are Penguin Young Readers Group and Random House Children's Books. But WITHIN those, on the Penguin side, there is Viking, Dutton, Philomel, Putnam, Kokila, Penguin Workshop, Rocky Pond, etc etc. And on the RH side, there's Random House Books for Young Readers, Delacorte, Knopf, Crown, Labyrinth Road, Make Me a World, etc etc.
They are ALL part of PRH. There is no imprint just called "Penguin" on the kid's side -- you have to go to one of the imprints. There IS an imprint called RH BYR -- but there is no special perk or prestige to being published by that imprint vs Knopf, or whatever other RH imprint. Individual imprints may be different sizes or have different specialities, missions, or "vibes" -- but they are all PRH, none of them are particularly "better" or "worse". (They might be better or worse for YOUR book, but they aren't better or worse to the general public or anything like that!)
For example: Rocky Pond is pretty much one main editor, and it has a specific mission: Kids books for all ages that focus on mental health and social/emotional learning. Kokila has several editors, and a specific mission: Kids books for all ages that center marginalized voices/experiences. Rise has two editors, and a specific mission: "To engage, empower, and evolve the youngest readers (ages 0-5) with authentic, relevant, and elegant books." -- you get the picture, right? Different vibes! So if YOUR book was appropriate for one of those imprints, maybe that's the best imprint for it. You'd still be "published by Penguin Random House" -- you'd be a "Penguin author" -- you'd just be at one of the smaller imprints that specializes in that kind of book. (And in the case of Penguin, since there literally IS NO IMPRINT just called "Penguin" -- well, you are gonna be at a differently named imprint!)
(The RH side is more difficult to discern from that link because the RH imprints don't have their "mission statements" listed like that, so I'll just tell you -- Delacorte is mostly highly commercial YA & MG fare, Knopf is books for all ages that are more "literary", RH BYR tends to be commercial middle grade, chapter books, series, etc, RH Graphic = Graphic novels, Joy Revolution is basically diverse romances by and about BIPOC characters, Labyrinth Road I'd think of for MG adventure/fantasy series, etc. There's crossover, of course, but essentially: Different vibes for different kinds of books! If your book is a commercial chapter book series, it's probably gonna be RH BYR -- if it is a lyrical and literary picture book, it probably WON'T be -- and that's fine!)
--
**** ETA: If you want to know more, this info is out there and available online for all the publishers, it's not secret information. I always suggest, when you read a book, make a note of the publisher/imprint, because you will start to see patterns -- that's the best way to get the "vibe" of a given imprint, and can help you find comps, figure out where YOUR book belongs, etc etc.

SO MANY IDEAS! Still working on some outfits for her but for now this one will do 💙 The skirt is from RH, top and leg warmers were made using her fluffy scarf. She's so much fun to dress up! I need to go fabric shopping 💙❄️
I made some black leggins and a graphic crop tshirt but I wasn't happy with the look so I'll keep experimenting and making clothes for her.

The continuation of my graphic memoir coursework. Done extremely quickly for, ah, university reasons. I tried to capture the really weird, nebulous feelings that come from working in archaeology.
And waking up to do hard labor on one's day off.
