Part X- 25 Years Later
On January 3, 2017 the big announcement was finally revealed. Liefeld had teamed with Producer Graham King, Fundamental Films and writer-producer Akiva Goldsman for an Extreme Studios universe of films. Along with this announcement was exciting news for fans of the comics with Liefeld stating-
“I have a new Brigade series ready to go that I've been waiting to launch with Bloodstrike, and then we have an Extreme anthology coming out. I'm not going to flood the market. We'll do selective stories, selective arcs, and then at the end of the year, we'll be collecting the material. I love collections. We're going to collect the original stories for the first time, as well. Very little of the '90s stories have been collected. Bloodstrike No. 1 was a book that I laid out, we had young talent at the time — it gave me a chance to control the storytelling — and we're going to recolor and reissue that so that people can have an affordable version of that. Re-Gex No. 1, I did with [Marvel TV head] Jeph Loeb, we're doing a new edition of that. But, yes. There'll also be new adventures. We'll do a couple of story arcs. We've got a lot of the Extreme talent working on new material, some of them are already back at work on it. Marat Mychaels, who was the original artist on Brigade, is working on it again.”
-- *Kickstarter Updates* 3/13/17- Announcement that every Brigade backer will receive a free signed copy of the Extreme Studios 25th Anniversary Yearbook from a special signing event that will be held at month’s end.
6/20/17- “I added 2 pages, an informative spread, to Brigade which are being colored and then after my upcoming Vegas convention it will be going off to the printers. I'm hoping to have copies in 3-4 weeks. Certainly within that window.”
7/24/17- Liefeld posts the breakdown/layout of the “near completed pencils of a spread I have decided to include in Brigade.” This identical pencil image was posted by Liefeld on Instagram in November 2014. --
July sees the release of the remastered edition of Bloodstrike #1 with brand new coloring by Thomas Mason. On the opening page, Liefeld directed fans to his website, “for a longer examination of the thought and work that went into creating the original Bloodstrike #1 and the remastered edition.” -There is no such content on the website.
Also in July, it was announced that the long overdue third issue of the 2015 Bloodstrike series would be serialized as a flipbook feature within three issues of the newly relaunched Youngblood series. This is specifically the very important issue that was mentioned in the previous Kickstarter updates as setting up the Brigade series. -Youngblood #4 had an eight page segment, ending on a cliffhanger. -Youngblood #5 had a three page Brigade interlude, ending on a cliffhanger. -Youngblood #6 had no flipbook content.
-- *Kickstarter Updates* 8/21/17- “With Youngblood #5 going out to the printer this week, there is a BRIGADE interlude portion of that Bloodstrike story that sets up the events and the interconnected-ness that tethers the books together. I will likely include it in Brigade but it has been created specifically for Bloodstrike. I have long maintained that Bloodstrike needs to conclude for Brigade to be best understood. The story has changed in small ways since I conceived it, this reflects those elements. The corrected color pages will be in today and I'll likely share them here and on social media.
10/11/17- “It'll be right under the 25th anniversary mark of Image Comics but November is the date I'll be sending these out. The stock of this book will be heavy and of the nicest possible quality. I had to turn to a new writer as my writer retired from comics and I wish him all the best. I remain ridiculously proud and excited to share this with you. The road has been long, I literally had the book colored twice, now scripted twice and a slight tweak in the storyline, but, all for the best.Thank you for making this happen.“
11/20/17- “We are in the middle of November and I am making color corrections and lettering changes. Final files off to the printer and a proof in the next few days. Depending on the schedule of printing and delivery I should be packing these shortly, within a week. 2017, 25th anniversary of Image still on track. Of course I’m going to tell you it’s worth the wait!” --
As of December 20, 2017. There has been no further updates regarding the shipping of the Kickstartered Brigade, the completion of Bloodstrike or release of the previously announced Extreme Anthology book, new printing of Re:Gex, or collected editions of classic Extreme Studios comics.
Found in the back pages of Youngblood #6 released in October 2017 was an advertisement for a new Bloodstrike: Brutalists series by cartoonist Michel Fiffe coming in 2018. Any connection to the Brigade/Bloodstrike plans of 2012-2017 are unknown as no other details have been announced.
__ This concludes a look back at the publishing history of Rob Liefeld’s Brigade and Bloodstrike. Parts one through nine are available via this Tumblr’s previous posts.

Rob Liefeld's Re:Gex Re:Imagined. A sketch for this weeks challenge at the Ten Ton Studios forum that I decided to color experiment some on.
I actually completely misunderstood the challenge and I think I used too much reflect light.
