Another hot take: having an official Year of Shadow only shines a light on Shadow's preferential treatment and unintentionally implies the other characters aren't good enough just because they have less mainstream popularity. Not helping is that SEGA appear to always be dedicated to keeping an eye on Shadow's portrayals, yet seem less attentive to the rest, including Sonic himself in some cases. Shadow may be "fleshed out" (YMMV on in a good way or not), but the others deserve credit too.
Strongly agree | Agree | Neutral | Disagree | Strongly disagree
I didn't see a Year of Knuckles :^) even as the second movie was effectively his movie :^) this years is his 30th anniversary, and he only got a short spinoff miniseries... and here I should mention how it was mostly about Wade and other humans :^)
2023 wasn't the Year of Amy :^) she didn't get a whole celebratory year for reappearing in Origins Plus or Superstars :^)
Shadow is the fan favorite. There's no point in denying it. I don't think we ever moved past that point when Shadow was more beloved than Sonic himself. We are fully in the 2000s 2.0, man. Can you see all of me, walk into my mystery.

new rgg fans will never know what they missed back in ye olden days of the fandom (like, 2019), doubly so now that scott strichart's deleted his twitter and jon riesenbach's privated. twitter was so fucking fun and then whatever-the-hell at sega of america happened and caused a fucking snowball effect and now we have shitass localization and resulting discourse that makes every release nigh unbearable, misinformation, confusion, people complaining about "bad writing/mischaracterization" not realizing it's because of the shitass english loc, i'm sitting here like jesus christ these loc bitches massacred saejima's character voice, people will never see him as he was intended, as original yakuza 5 localization Correctly painted him, and now they're coming for kiryu. god help us. we used to be a proper fandom. before everyone was subjected to the remastered localizations and shaky eng characterization. no one had even played yakuza 3-5, people still called morning glory "sunshine" orphanage, kiryu was our only protagonist and people still called him "boring", it was beautiful...
anyway gaiden uses affective instead of effective because the current localization team is full of careless dumbasses who don't give a fuck about ensuring they're using correct english grammar and this is not an isolated incident

unpopular opinion for seto motherfucking kaiba? mayhaps? blease?
ok so. i wrote. like four fucking paragraphs answering this, talking about how i feel about kaiba, and then. when i went. to fucking add tags. tumblr fucked up and deleted my whole post <333 super cool website very fun to use <33333
anyway im not rewriting all of that so here's the tl;dr: i like kaiba, he's iconic for a reason, but my 🔥🔥🔥est kaiba take is just that honestly i dont think he's nearly as deep a character as people want him to be, and that's not a bad thing. He fulfills the role he has in DM's narrative fantastically well, and he has his veins of things that could be interesting to discuss, but after 25 years it feels like it's just nonstop hitting bedrock when it comes to kaiba 'analysis.' I feel like i see the same 3-4 kaiba meta posts every other week (and i do sometimes wish that level of love and dedication to character analysis got extended to. any other yugioh character. i feel similarly about atem too tbh dfghd)
like with kaiba, it feels like a massive chunk of his implied depth is things fans have willed into existence through the sheer power of I Want it To Be That Deep. and i dont even think there's anything wrong with that, it just doesn't interest me very much. i like my kaiba discussion where the elephant of "this character is in many ways defined by stagnant growth and if this is left unchecked it's going to get really fucking bad" is Very in the room. kaiba is at his best to me when he's doing digital duel links necromancy, when his interpersonal relationships beyond mokuba are under the microscope and revealed to be, uh, hanging by a thread or two!
also, just, with not being terribly interested in it all, at this point now five yugiohs in and fully out in the spinoff reeds, i gotta say, every other yugioh rival is a more engaging character to me on a narrative and symbolic level than i have ever personally found kaiba. i honestly think a lot of them are also, by their series' end, far kinder people than seto kaiba is. 🤷♀️ maybe in another world another life kaiba could have dueled a robotic embodiment of all his negative traits and been humbled to some degree by that. what a world to think of

Silent Hill 2 fans feeling the same way about the remake as I did about Resident Evil 2 remake when it was announced. It's ok. We'll always have the originals. No one can take them away from us. You'll get over it.
