Irish republicans flipping from pro zionist to anti zionist was not in response to anything about zionism itself so much as a reaction to northern Ireland becoming pro Israel after Israel and the UK's relations changed from fighting each other to being allies.

I was in Ireland recently and I don’t even know where to start.

I saw posters and graffiti everywhere calling for the boycott of Jewish owned businesses, I saw posters of hostages with their faces torn off, I saw posters comparing the Easter Rising to October 7th, I saw framed photos of antizionist protests inside the GPO, I saw the GPO exhibit rewrite Irish history to exclude the relationship between the Irish Volunteers and the Zionist movement, specifically the ZMC. They called it “Zionist occupied Palestine” in 1916. I gave money to a group of buskers outside a Catholic Church and they immediately started playing a song for Palestine that began “they paint the streets with the blood of our children.”

I have family in Ireland, and I studied Irish history for years; it will always hold an important place in my heart. But the whole time I was there, all I was thinking of was that chapter in Ulysses, when one of the characters goes on a diatribe of how the real reason for Irish oppression was that all the English banks were run by Jews, and then congratulates Ireland for being the only European country to have never expelled the Jews “because she never let them in.”

Is it possible to be an Irish Jew? I know who I am. I’m just not sure there’s room for such a person in this world.

Update: this wasn’t a big enough inversion of the reality for them so now they’ve included it in the Genocide of Indigenous Peoples article.
