as shown in the image above, aether canonically carries a shoulder piece on his left shoulder. if you pay close attention to it, the image resembles that of a small tiger. it could also be interpreted as a lion pup, however, i have strong reasons to believe that it’s a tiger, and this will become important for my aether’s interpretation.

tigers are divine creatures in many cultures, but specifically in chinese-cantonese mythologies, tigers are associated with the power of stars and heavens, such as shown in the confucian chapter xì cí shàng (classics of changes), which talks about the sì xiàng (the four symbols). ancient chinese astronomers divided the sky into four main territories: those protected by the 1) azure dragon, 2) black tortoise, 3) vermilion bird and 4) white tiger; all of them composed of seven stars, each representing a main element that constitutes their being. considering that there are canonically four descenders in teyvat according to nahida, and that they’re “otherwordly”, it doesn’t seem to be too much of a stretch to consider that aether represents the white tiger in this context.

if aether represents the white tiger, then lumine would be the black tortoise (which is sometimes represented as having a snake around it). their colour schemes seem to be opposites to what they represent, and that could be very much intentional as if to follow the taoist order of yin-yang. while aether in-game has a higher def stat than lumine’s (representing his defensive nature, tortoise), lumine has higher atk stats (representing her aggressive nature, tiger). therefore, following taoism philosophy, which seems to inspire a lot of creative writing in genshin, their “cores” would represent the complementary opposites of what they are. aether is focused on defence for his soul is ferocious (yang, tiger), and lumine is aggro-oriented because deep down she’s resilient (yin, tortoise).

as well, something to further sustain this is that, although aether’s name in chinese is kong (空, as in “sky”), it can also be written as 孔 (meaning “bright”), which is a common noun used to describe the white tiger and heavenly teachings in the xì cí shàng.

based on this, as well as on my lore for aether and some bias i have towards the “true/proper name” philosophy — which you can read more about here and here, but i’ll probably make a separate post for this in the future —, my interpretation of the traveller will have many names. the name he chooses for teyvat is the one he grew more accustomed to, “aether”, but he has others. his “true/proper name”, the name given to him by the stars and lumine herself, will be “kong”. 

just like with his bare hands, aether is also very protective of his true name, but if someone connects with him deeply enough, they can learn it by themselves. so far, lumine (“yin”) is the only one who knows of his true/proper name.

since my aether is a caeling, he can shapeshift. the humanoid form we see of him in teyvat is one he uses to appear more friendly, more approachable, i.e., more human. his true form has pointy long ears, black scleras, big mosaic-like wings, sharp claws and long fangs, and his hair as unruly as that of a tiger’s mane. his arms and legs are also blackened and have stars in them, that glow on the same rhythm as the big cores on his chest, wrists and knees. they’re warm to the touch and can tickle… or burn you. it really depends if the tiger is angry or not, tbh.

to recap once more and tie up with my other thoughts: as we’ve learned, there are four descenders in teyvat. the third one is dead, and the first two are missing and unknown to us. aether is classified as the 4th descender, and at the end of fontaine’s archon quest, there’s an interesting comparison that goes on with the 3rd descender, as brought on by neuvillette and paimon.

the 3rd descender’s remains are what made the gnosis possible. if such an incredible feat is possible with just one descender, what can happen if another one dies or sacrifices themselves for teyvat? considering that the number 4 in chinese culture is considered a “bad luck number”, representing “death”, this can have a lot of consequences, especially considering the parallels that tigers are very protective of what they love. would that mean that aether would die for someone? or for this world he has spent so much time on? hmmm.

i’m unsure as of yet if aether will sacrifice himself for teyvat in the future. it’s certainly a possibility, and for that reason, i’ll be making a special au verse for that scenario, where aether sacrifices his divinity, wings and everything he has to protect teyvat and thus become truly human in the process. if that happens, i’ll also be going the extra step of sacrificing his memories, just so that he’ll have to travel through the world again to learn the truth about everything. if he completely dies, however, i’ll be taking an approach similar to tales of zestiria’s ending, which i may or may not expand more upon during the future. either way, this idea in particular is still very much in the making and i would love to explore scenarios for that.
