Another skitter of metal brought him back to the present as one of Grievous' clawed feet disturbed a dismembered droid limb. Zorryx pointed. “What did you do to that medical droid?”

“That should be obvious,” said Grievous without looking.

Zorryx rephrased, “Why did you destroy it?”

“The droid suggested stasis to help pass the time. I offered an alternative.”

“That droid was extremely expensive, Grievous.”

“Droids can be repaired. Its processor is intact.” The pacing continued uninterrupted, but Grievous’ tone shifted from bored to intense, almost accusatory. “I was supposed to train today. Did Count Dooku say why I have been confined?”

Zorryx sighed and began fussing with his datapad. “Not in so many words, but I can infer why. Apparently a few spies have been apprehended here at the Stalgasin Hive—among them, two Jedi.”

Grievous stopped pacing and whirled with a feral hiss. “Jedi.”

“The last I heard, the Count and Archduke Poggle had them taken to Petranaki arena to be executed. In any case, I understand the Count’s caution. Where there are a couple of spies, there may be more, and if they wandered this far underground and discovered you—”

“I would kill them before they could send word back to their precious Republic,” Grievous seethed.

“Quite likely,” Zorryx agreed. “It seems they will die either way.” He sobered. “War may come sooner than we expected.”

Grievous resumed pacing, pausing every few steps to tread on the dismembered droid and mangle its parts between his crushing talons. “I welcome it. I was promised a war, and all I have been given are endless battle simulations and orbital exercises. I’ve had enough of this waiting! I—”

He broke off. His head tilted, audioreceptors pivoting. —
