Nice large home, quirky decor, and under $1M. What more could you ask for? This 1920 house is a large Tudor style in Amsterdam, New York. It has 7bd. 5.5ba. $875K.

Impressive entrance hall. Notice the baby barrier protecting the carousel horse. (Like that’s going to protect it.) They’ve got hundreds of dollars worth of carpeting protecting the wood flooring. 

To the left is a very large sitting room.

Clearly, this home has been on the market since Xmas. That’s not a good sign- they should really put up some new pics. 

I love wood, but I don’t know if it’s the style, the finish, or the photo filter that makes it look unappealing. 

Directly straight ahead in the entrance hall is the kitchen to left and behind lacy wrought iron gates is the dining room.

This kitchen is interesting. Look at the red cabinetry that’s accented by, what I think is, wallpaper, but it could be fabric. It has seriously professional appliances plus what looks like a custom made island.

My mom’s a decorator and one thing I learned was to never put furniture only around the perimeter of the room. You have to “float” some of it, otherwise there’s a nothing but a big expanse of empty floor in the middle.

This is a nice sunporch- look at the brick and stone. Has a bit of an industrial vibe with a great view of the garden.

Donating is also a pain. Unless they are in pristine condition, good quality, and/or unused in the box, my goodwill doesn't even bother putting them out on the floor. I personally do make exceptions for quirky vintage items that I can give a quick scrub. But most of your grandma's dusty and grimy holiday decor goes into a big crate and sent "elsewhere", and that's only if it's even salvageable. Tinsel? Trash. Standard Xmas lights in a big lump? Trash. Shitty blinking holiday necklaces, hats, sunglasses? Trash. Anything even remotely sticky or grimy? Trash. Buy your decor to last. Make your own, make it sturdy, make it so you want to keep it. Don't buy decor you don't plan on keeping for a few years just because it's a dollar. Make your own ornaments. Make your own damn stocking. Keep your rubber rats. Name them. Paint them when they fade. Wrap them tenderly when it's time to put them away until next year. Treasure your holiday decor. /rant

They have ornaments from 2010!! Those saps. Their enthusiasm for the holidays is infectious! I get so excited to see them decorating the flat and making codexes. And yes! Phil gets to be creative and Dan just lets him offend all his senses with tacky decor and bright lights! I just really hope we don’t lose that this year because it’s such a highlight to see the Spooky Week or Gamingmas set ups :)

I know I’ve said it before, but I think one of the biggest reasons people were so attached to the first London flat was because they put so much of themselves into it. Every little nook and cranny had hints of dnp, and it made it such a home. Those little touches made it so cozy, it was like an extension of them. And the fact that so much of it was gifted/made by their community? Absolutely heartwarming ❤️

"Our Taehyungie is always so hard to shop for during Xmas…" said Namjoon aloud to no one in particular. He was currently coming out of the fifth store he had tried; he was having no luck finding the right gift for the younger man.He sighed and looked anxiously at the different store windows as he passed.

'If only one present was needed', he mused, 'This would be a lot easier…'. But two presents had to be purchased, brought home, secreted away upstairs, and wrapped before midnight tonight. Taehyung was the only one he had this particular problem with, as the young vocalist's birthday fell on 12/30. That was just annoyingly close to the December holidays.

The silver lining was that the leader had successfully purchased one of the two gifts that he needed. Tae's birthday present had been decided earlier in the day at the electronics store. He had found a camera, that looked like it belonged in the 1960s, but functioned like a modern camera. It was quirky and unique, making it the perfect birthday gift for Tae. 

Namjoon had made this sort of gift giving a 5 year tradition since the group had debuted. He always got each member a fun gift for their birthday and a practical or useful one for Xmas each year. Fun gifts for Taehyung were easy. The vocalist has many interests and had a singularly happy nature. The trouble was that practicality and Taehyung were not always compatible.

Shopping on Xmas Eve was not fun either. Namjoon hadn't meant to put it off for so long, but they had been busy and present buying had been pushed to the back burner. The stores in the mall were crammed with other procrastinators who were also hunting down their gifts. 

Namjoon had tons of options, that was part of the problem. He was typically very decisive and clever with real-time problems, like tactful answers to interview questions or negotiating time off with the managers. But last minute gift-getting was not his forte.

Finally, Namjoon saw a familiar brand logo. He clapped his hand to his head in amazement. OF COURSE! GUCCI!!! Taehyung was obsessed with Gucci! He owned everything from shirts to pants, to jewelry and accessories. He saw a large advertisement for a new Gucci fragrance for men in the window. He stared. Now there was an idea! Taehyung loved colognes and scented lotions. Relieved by the fresh idea flow, he made a beeline for the storefront.

He looked at the ad, reading and looking at the photography. He glanced up and saw an associate looking at him. The man saw Namjoon through the window and quickly hid a smile behind a hand. 

Startled that he might have been recognized, Namjoon took a step back. That was when he caught sight of himself in the window. He almost laughed out loud, he looked like an older man in his 60's. He had liked the gray-green slacks and sweater vest this morning but with the bulky winter coat, bucket hat, glasses, and face mask, he realized he looked like his grandfather.

"Oh, well…"

He walked into the store, and was immersed in clothes sporting Gucci's signature colors of red and green. The handbags and clothing reflected the logo of intersecting "GG" at him from every conceivable direction.

He was quickly lost, the lightning and unique store layout baffling him. He asked one of the staff politely where he could find their fragrances. They looked at him strangely, but led him to a small separate room off to one side. The room was quiet, with only 1 or 2 other shoppers. This room was beautifully decorated with deep mahogany wall shelves with ebony and gold accents. In the center of the room were tall frosted crystalline tables that seemed to float on their thin spindly legs. They displayed several small bottles in black, a silver shade and green. The advertisement showed the English word, "Guilty" as well as French, "Eau de toilette, cologne, and eau de parfum".

Namjoon eyed the gunmetal colored bottle, intrigued. He removed the lid from the tester bottle and tried to discern the scent without spraying the cologne onto a tester strip. He couldn't smell anything… he moved his face mask from his nose and tried again. Still nothing, he pushed gently on the dispenser, but his finger slipped. 

The bottle sprayed the air in front of him with a large misty cloud of scent. 'Crap! That's strong!' He thought as his nose was assaulted. He was so shocked he dropped the bottle. The bottle hit the floor, but didn't break, fortunately. That, however is where Namjoon's piddling daily allotment of good luck ended. 

 

He backed away from the table he was at, to escape the perfumed cloud and backed straight into another glass table. It wobbled and bottles shook precariously before gravity took over, bringing the elegant bottles to earth with a cacophony of shattering glass. 

A powerful assortment of smells attacked him: pines, musk, cedar, florals, and a spicy smell that reminded him of earl grey tea. He registered this random bit of trivia before his nose decided enough was enough. He coughed, his breath catching, and began to sneeze violently,

"HAK'TSHU! HAHSHOO! RASSHUU! HEK'TSH-ISSH! HETSCH! ISSH! HEKTSSCH! HESSH!"

His eyes were streaming, and he stumbled almost blinded towards the light of the antechamber. People had come to stare at the mess and the person who had made it. Namjoon couldn't even catch his breath. 

"HEKTSH! HEHHISSH! HETSCHH! ISH-RESSH!HATSH! HEHGHSSH!"

Within moments, a staff member was assisting him to their back office. They got him water. Hardly able to take a breath, Namjoon kept trying to apologize for the upset and damage. If only he could stop sneezing for just a… a minute…

"HEK'TSHAH! ISSHUH! HATSH! HEH-HEHTCHOO!"

Namjoon snapped forward bending practically double with each sneeze. He tried to prevent him from sneezing and to hold back the itchy waves with no luck,

“HEH-ISSH! I-I’mb… s-so… HAHTSCH!ESSSH! ISSHAH! HAK’TSUU!”

He was finally given tissues by someone. He couldn’t see, his eyes were red and swollen, but he nodded his thanks and collapsed in the tissues sneezing and exhausted,

HEHDDSHHU! RESSSHHUU! HHGHSSHUU! ACKTSSU! ISSHOO!”

He sucked in a quick breath and blew his nose in desperation, he had never felt so humiliated in his entire life. The blowing seemed to help, his inflamed nasal passages finally ridding themselves of the perfume.

He gasped, oh, oxygen… oxygen was wonderful. He sneezed again, but it was slowing down considerably,

“HAH-ISSHOO! HEKT-SSHOO! (sniffle) HEH-GHHESSHU!”

He tried to speak to the concerned staff members, who were watching him warily. 

“I-I’m… so...Sorry!” He tried to bow, but sneezed into cupped hands,

“HEHSSHOO! ASSSHOOO!”

He sneezed and fished in his pocket for his wallet, he was more than willing to compensate for the damages and the trouble he had caused. He suddenly remembered the first bottle. Undoubtedly, if his finger hadn’t slipped, he would more than likely chosen that bottle for Taehyung’s gift. When he thought about it, that perfume by itself hadn’t caused the trouble. He paused to sneeze again.

“HAH-ATSSHUU! I’ll p-pay for… for… Hehssh! I’ll pay for everythig,... I-I’mb s-so… ATTSSHU! So sorry about this!”

The staff seemed embarrassed for him, but the person who seemed to be in charge accepted the card and nodded their approval. Namjoon held up one finger, a silent request that they wait a moment and sneezed again,

“ISSSHhooo! Assshooo! Could you...GESSSHUU! Could you also charge for a… a… AAKKTSUU! anodther bottle to be gift wrapped?...” He sniffled pathethically.

“You...st-still want to purchase a fragrance?” the lead staff member stammered, before recovering their customer service face. Money was money. 

“Which fragrance, sir?”

“The silver bottle,... the Eau du toilette, the larger bottle... ISSHhhhooo! Please!"

The staff scuttled to fill the order and Namjoon sighed. Next time, he would just order on the web and hope for the best.

Set Season 3 holiday season. Scully has a difficult time coping with Melissa’s death as she helps her mom decorate the tree.

Scully fought back tears, the lump she felt lodged at the back of her throat, as she stared at the broken pieces of a horse sleigh ornament strewn on the floor that slipped out of her fingers while she was decorating her mom’s Christmas tree. This was Missy’s favorite ornament; a red lacquered sleigh with a bagful of presents attached to a white horse.

“Mom,” she managed to choke out, and her mother was by her side instantly with a comforting hug. Scully held onto her mom tightly as she succumbed to the tears that spilled forth, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to break it.” I didn’t mean to get Missy killed.

“It’s okay, sweetie,” her mom said reassuringly, “We could see if we can fix it. Glue it back together.”

It won’t bring her back. Nothing will bring her back, Scully thought. Her mother stooped down to gather the broken pieces of the ornament as Scully collected herself. She stood up and faced Scully after setting the pieces on a nearby side table. She placed her hands on Scully’s shoulders.

“Dana, I don’t think your father or Melissa would want to see you crying while decorating the tree. Wouldn’t she tell us not to mourn one’s death but to celebrate one’s life?” Scully huffed and slightly smiled.

“Yeah, Mom. She would say something like that. Is that how you’re managing to get through the holidays?” Her mother nodded.

“I know that both Melissa and your father are together, in a better place, and that one day I will see them again.” Scully looked at her mom who had a bittersweet expression on her face before she continued. “How about you go fetch the glue. This ornament won’t fix itself.”

“Okay, Mom.” After a bit of rummaging, Scully found the the craft glue in the hallway cabinet then returned to find her mother weeping as she stared at an old family portrait. “Mom?”

Her mother wiped away her tears. “A mother always wants what’s best for her children… I shouldn’t have been so dismissive of Missy’s quirky outlook.”

“Her New Age spirituality wasn’t quirky, Mom,” Scully’s voice was quiet but had an edge. “She and Charlie have always been the free spirits.” She handed her mother the glue. Her mother started to repair the ornament on the side table.

“I tried to be supportive of their approach on life, Dana. It’s hard to reconcile their beliefs with ours.”

Ours. She believed in science but also held onto faith. She’s partnered with a man who believe in aliens but scoff at religion, who believe in mythical creatures but not a God. But lately, with what they were uncovering—

“I don’t know what I believe anymore,” she said. Her mother looked at her shocked.

“Dana, you don’t mean that.”

“Was it God’s will for Missy to die, Mom? For her to take my place in Heaven first?” Her mother looked back at the ornament she set into place.

“You’re my only surviving daughter now, Dana.” Scully nodded in understanding. I’m the only daughter now. Don’t I dare stray away too.

Title: You’re My Secret Santa

Pairing: Mina x Chaeyoung / michaeng

She stared at the bright blobs of colors on her palette again. Then back to the painting. Then back to the colors. Which would she choose for her next brushstroke? What if it didn’t turn out perfect? And why oh earth did she decide on acrylic painting, not color pencils and ink like her other drawings?

Chaeyoung groaned inwardly in frustration at her inability to make a simple decision, at the same time, her heart fluttered with the excitement of Mina seeing her present. No, she would just have to keep trying and not give up on this. As she dipped her paintbrush in the titanium white once again, her mind wandered back to yesterday when Jihyo brought up the idea of secret Santa. 

“Everyone it’s that time of year againnnn~ You all know what that means!” Jihyo’s melodious voice sang with the holiday spirit. Tzuyu, who was sprawled on the couch, looked up from her phone and quizzically arched an eyebrow.

“Jihyo unnie, why do you sound so excited?” she asked, though her resigned tone made it sound like she knew what was coming. “Are you gonna make everyone do secret Santa again like last year?”

“Secret santa again? Aww, can we try something new? It’s just that I still have no idea what to do with all the selca portraits that Nayeon gifted me with last year,” Jeongyeon looked over at the two, pausing in the midst of hanging a string of brightly colored Christmas lights over the fireplace.

“You can still look at them every night before bed to remind you of my gorgeous existence,” Nayeon called from the kitchen, where she was drinking hot cocoa with Momo. Jeongyeon rolled her eyes at Nayeon’s typical remark before continuing her work.

“Yes,” Jihyo clapped her hands together, her smile beaming warmly. “Let’s do secret santa. But this time, we’ll make it different. To change things up a little.”

“Oh? How so?” Tzuyu still looked a little skeptical. Her last year’s present from Sana was highly impractical, not to mention barely appropriate for the innocent maknae.

“Trust me on this, my dear Tzuyu. We’ll have everyone give each other handmade gifts this year, no store-bought gifts allowed! It’ll be a fun and heartfelt way to express our love for each other as one big TWICE family,” Jihyo winked, already set to work on writing out everyone’s names on slips of paper.

And that was how TWICE ended up sitting in a circle, cuddling up in big comfy blankets, sipping hot drinks. Everyone pulled the name of their secret gift recipient from a hat, with much giggling and teasing one another about who might have gotten who.

Chaeyoung was both surprised and pleased to read “~Myoui Mina~” on her slip of paper. She tried not to be too obvious and did not glance immediately at Mina who was sitting across from her, leaning gently on Momo’s shoulder and sipping her cocoa thoughtfully. Instead, she just cracked a lame joke with Jeongyeon sitting beside her, though inwardly she was blushing like crazy. Her mind set to work wondering what kind of handmade present Mina would appreciate from her. Besides rapping and dancing, drawing was one of Chaeyoung’s many passions and seemed like the perfect idea to create a work of art for Mina’s gift.

The snow was falling delicately on the darkened city outside, and Mina could feel the friendly feeling of the Christmas holidays spreading slowly over her. She could hear the voices of Dahyun, Sana, Nayeon, and Jeongyeon downstairs playing some card game and Jeongyeon’s outraged voice at Nayeon’s obvious cheating. She gazed out the frosted window, feeling so lucky to be spending the holidays with some of her most favorite people in the whole world.  Her mouth curled in a slight smile at the thought of Chaeyoung unwrapping her present.

Of course, Mina tried not to give away her secret too easily. She avoided looking at Chaeyoung right after drawing her name from the hat and pretended to cuddle next to Momo. But she already knew the perfect gift Chaeyoung might like from her. Knitting was always one of those therapeutic, yet hardly used skills Mina always thought she had, so it seemed natural to knit Chaeyoung something. She’d challenge herself by making a pair of gloves, the design of which she had seen in Pinterest boards online, and decided it wouldn’t be too difficult to DIY.

Finally deciding on starting up her little project again, Mina picked up the knitting needles and picked up from where she last left off. The wool was a cute, wintery blue color, and Mina already kenw it would be the perfect size for Chaeyoung’s smol hands by furtively measuring some old leather gloves from her closet (also, leather gloves? When she found them, Mina wondered when Chaeoyoung stopped wearing something as cool as those).

These warm gloves would be the perfect accessory for the winter season. Motivated by the thought of Chaeyoung happy and pleasantly surprised at the gift, Mina continued her knitting and began to softly sing the notes of a classy holiday carol, a gentle smile on her face.

“Ready? Ok, don’t look yet,” Chaeyoung made her final arrangements, as Mina sat on the couch with her eyes covered. “Ok now, 3..2..1..”

Mina opened her eyes and gasped. There, in front of her displayed on the coffee table in a frame, was an artistic rendering of her, painted against a snowy landscape. The Mina in the painting looked off into the distance, her graceful and delicate expression filled with hope and longing. In the painting, her beauty, sadness, and rare quirkiness was captured all at once in a single frame. Snowflakes cascaded all around in the portrait, and one could almost be reminded of a penguin at the south pole.

“I..I..” For a moment, she was lost for words.

“Do you like it?” Chaeyoung looked at her, hopeful and anxious at the same time. She’d spent the whole afternoon on the painting. After so many years of friendship, it was the first time Chaeyoung had drawn Mina and she was eager to see her reaction.

“I love it.” A huge smile lit up her elegant features. “Chaeyoung, this is amazing! Thank you.” Her look of humble gratitude and fondness spoke a thousand words to Chaeyoung. They embraced by the warmth of the fireplace, the bond of friendship between them strengthened like the bow of a Christmas ribbon.

“This is for you,” Mina presented an impeccably neatly wrapped gift box, decorated with cute penguins and polar bears on the wrapping paper.

“No way! You got me for secret Santa too?” Chaeyoung said, her hand covering her delighted surprise. She opened it excitedly and took out the contents. “Ah, these are so cute! And warm,” she tried the gloves on and put both hands, warmed by the soft wool, to her face. The knowledge that Mina had hand-knit these gloves, just for her, made her cherish them even more.

“This is the best Christmas I could have ever hoped for,” Chaeyoung’s words reflected her genuine happiness.

Mina felt a tingling warmth at seeing her Chae’s adorable smile. For now, as the other members still lay sound asleep upstairs, only she could share this rare moment with her baby lion cub, and it brought her unspeakable joy. 

As they sat there on the couch, treasuring each other’s presence in the brightness of the early winter morning, the future felt infinitely hopeful.
