Hey, so I wrote another email to Colourpop about the issue I have with their participation in the appropriation (and bastardization) of Quileute culture by doing a New Moon collection, especially one whose marketing leans into the 'wild' vibes.
Here's the text. Modify as you see fit, but don't copy word-for-word, please. You too can send an email to colourpop here, or you can comment on one of the New Moon posts on their instagram.
(Here's the one I wrote back in January.)
Hello,
I wrote to your company January 19th, and received an email that I would get a response in 3-5 business days, though there may be a bit of a backlog. Given that it has been three weeks, and so fifteen business days, I assume that my email was deemed less urgent than those of customers with missing packages or similar issues.
However, this is a topic I feel quite strongly about. When I look at your collection, which leans so heavily into the 'wild' nature that Meyer emphasized so heavily about the wolf pack, naming shades after things that draw so directly from the Quileute people, a federally recognized tribe, and marketing with 'wolfish' imagery that continues to use a parody of indigenous culture to sell a product, it is concerning.
I understand that your contract with Stephenie Meyer may preclude addressing the issue of what is owed to the Quileute peoples in direct relation to this franchise, but that does not make the damages they have suffered at her hands, if indirectly, any less real. If you are unable to address them in relation to each other, I urge you to state independently, but publicly, that you plan to donate to Move to Higher Ground, or more generally to an indigenous foundation of the PNW if you feel that it would come to close to a contract violation.
Were you a small creator or a lone celebrity, or just sharing a Twilight cosplay someone did with your products, I could dismiss it as a lack of knowledge. You are also not, yourselves, responsible for what Stephenie and her works have done to the people who influenced New Moon and the subsequent books so much. However, by collaborating with the franchise, by spending months on these palettes and glosses and liners, you have voluntarily stepped into the conflict that is between those who are concerned about the real impact of these books, and those who are not. You've had months, even a year, for your people to work on these products, and so I imagine it was impossible for you to have not come across, in your research of fan preferences, the movement of fans who want to see these wrongs righted.
You can continue to look away, but it reflects poorly on your brand, and I am not the only person whose view of your reputation is being tarnished. You have the opportunity to do a great good, for the sake of people who have been, and continue to be, harmed by the actions of Stephenie Meyer and her franchise. In engaging with this collaboration, you are now party to that harm.
I want to buy the New Moon eyeshadow palette. I really do. But until you make a public statement on this subject, I cannot.
Thank you for your time.

Before today is over I wanted to make this post! The Quileute Nation still needs help moving their whole lives to higher ground as climate change affects the water levels near their homes. And GOOD NEWS! Donations ARE HELPING! They were able to move the tribal school where kids do their schooling years/community event space to higher ground! Next is the senior center and government buildings so they can focus on creating new sustainable housing on higher ground.
Off topic, their school is so cool, they have an incredible underwater robotics program. Learn more and Donate here if you can, every little bit helps provide a stable future for these young robotics engineers and their elders.

sometimes youtube targeted ads get it right
-a story-
pov: me listening to a booktuber recount/ roast the events of the twilight books series
(idk why, video was there, I read the books back in the day) (video is playing in the background)
booktuber:
just finished roasting new moon (aka the bella depression one) and mentions bella likes the song clare de lune
(okay onto eclipse, but first an AD!)
[person starts describing their experience with depression as, you guessed it, freaking CLARE DE LUNE plays in the background]
Ad was for BetterHelp 🤣🤣🤣
so congrats YouTube I finally sat thru an entire unprompted youtube ad because I was cackling the entire time
10/10 experience

Indigenous Aid Organizations To Give To In This Shitty, Shitty Time
First Nations Development Institute: From addressing economic inequality, to preserving and uplifting native languages and arts, to fighting for land stewardship, to directly supporting COVID relief in California native tribes, they really do it all.
Native American Rights Fund: A law and advocacy network dedicated to fighting for tribal recognition, sovereignty, resource control, and human rights. In addition to court battles (local, state, and federal) they consult on issues of tribal law.
Lakota Peoples Law Project: Founders of the Lakota Child Rescue Project, they are another law and advocacy collective that fight to enforce the Indian Child Welfare Act, secure Native voting rights, and restore the sovereignty of indigenous peoples over their sacred lands such as the Black Hills and lands stolen by the Catholic Church.
Indigenous Women Rising: This grassroots mutual aid fund is open to all Indigenous peoples seeking abortion care, prenatal care, or delivery care. In addition to the direct donations, they have a bonfire store.
Quileute Move To Higher Ground: The Tribal School has been completed!!! The children of the Quileute community have a new, safe school to attend, but, tribal housing is still located within the tsunami zone. Donations now go towards construction of safe housing. I repeat: the school is BUILT. The school!!! Is!!! BUILT!!! This is objectively WONDERFUL.
American Indian Resource Center: A nonprofit focused on providing cultural events/resources and educational experiences to native children. Among other programs, they operate Camp Sevenstar, a project aimed at immersing Cherokee youth in the traditions of their culture, and the Cherokee Little Seeds Program, which aims to produce a new generation of Cherokee speakers.

Looks like the Twilight franchise is going to be making itself more money again and all I can say is: donate to the Quileute Move To Higher Ground project to protect this community against tsunamis.
Here you go have at it :)

The ColourPop Twilight: New Moon collection is very pretty. There are four different items I'm drawn to.
However. It is Twilight merch, and specifically New Moon merch, and I doubt there are any plans from Colourpop to donate any of the proceeds to the Quileute people, who have never seen a red cent of SMeyer's profits from her appropriation of their culture.
So. If you feel similarly, maybe pop over to this page and politely tell them about your concerns, and suggest that some profits go to the Quileute Higher Ground project.
Please share, maybe see if you can get people on other platforms talking about it.
Don't copy this directly, write your own, but here is what I wrote.
----------------------
Hello,
I have purchased many of your products over the last few years, sometimes through the site and sometimes not. I find the New Moon collection beautiful, but I feel some trepidation over it. Given your dedication to other moral issues, such as staying cruelty free, I hope that you are open to hearing me out.
Over the past two decades, Stephanie Meyer has made hundreds of millions of dollars from the Twilight series, and much of the draw of the three later books came from her use and misuse of the traditional stories of the Quileute peoples. None of the copious amounts of money that she made from her appropriation of their culture has ever gone to them.
At this time, the Quileute people are experiencing great risk due to rising sea levels, something they likely could have worked around easily had they any of the funds that the Twilight series should have led to for them. The current standard among Twilight fans is that, should any money come from a Twilight fan product (e.g. pins), then a portion of that money should go to "Quileute Move to Higher Ground," as a way of honoring the way their people's traditions led to a series we enjoy, and their lack of any true gain from that situation.
The collaboration you are doing will lead to yet more money going to Mrs. Meyer, and there is little doubt that she will continue to ignore the Quileute people's situation. I would like to suggest that your company donate a portion of the profits from this collaboration to the Higher Ground project, maybe even talking about it on social media if possible.
As it stands, this collaboration appears to continue the tradition of basing products on the Quileute people and their traditions, without compensating them in any way for it.
The donations can be found here: https://mthg.org/
I am not affiliated with the Quileute Move to Higher Ground in any way, but I am a consumer who is interested in your products, and would love to buy these specific products. Many who express concern regarding the Twilight franchise and its impact on the Quileute people may be driven to actually buy this collection if told that this particular set, which draws from the book most heavily based on them, will benefit them.
Thank you for your time.

so netflix plans on making a twilight animated series. i'm usually not the type to say stuff like this because i'm not the type to tell someone what to do & in the end i Can't really force anyone not to but but as an ndn who loves anime i at least highly recommend the following: Do Not Fucking Watch It. smeyer has already made BILLIONS off of an existing tribe's culture & bastardizing it for her own racist colonial fantasy. put y'all's money where your mouth is & support indigenous artists & creatives.
Tumblr media
stephanie meyer is on the project & she'll continue to profit off of indigenous communities while our communities despite being called out multiple times by indigenous activists — ESPECIALLY the Quileute community who hasn't received a SINGLE profit from her work despite smeyer's cultural appropriation & cultural theft — in a portrayal that is damaging to indigenous girls, women, boys & men. unlearn the antinative racism that is deeply entrenched in all the mediums this series portrays. for the love of all things good go ahead & watch a.li n.ahdee's video on twilight & everything wrong w/ it.
check out & support the Quileute community's Move To Higher Ground project so that they can continue practicing their culture & traditions in safety as well as the Quileute Nation to learn more about the rich culture & heritage of the Quileute people living in the Pacific Northwest Coast.
Tumblr media
that tells you everything you need to know about it. natives, especially ndn anime fans, deserve so much fucking better than racist antinative bullshit. give your local native reparations 2 while you're at it because i can't believe this shit is still being made. if you're gonna be racist & bitch about any of this:

nothing is wilder to me than how many knock offs have edward be a sexually experienced dom who has been with tons of women when in the twilight saga, edward is the one that makes him and bella get married before they have sex and is constantly stopping them when their makeouts get too heavy
meanwhile, bella spends the second half of the series horny 24/7 and explicitly doesn’t want to be turned until after her wedding night, risking her life to have sex with a vampire while still human because she doesn’t want her thirst for blood to be stronger than her want for edward when they have sex for the first time
mandatory “read the truth vs twilight page from the burke museum and the quileute tribe right now” and “consider helping the quileute tribe continue their move to higher ground” note. thank you!
