Today was good! I’m a little overwhelmed!

3:30 am posting because I’m feeling slightly wound thanks to today being a whole day, but it wasn’t a bad day?

Short version: bunch of appointments, thankfully all online, but after last week being stress central this was tolerable. I got my MMJ eval and it was quick and easy and if anything I over prepared because I’m so used to not being believed and having to back myself up with data. (Which I have to gather and keep for myself because medicine is apparently just a free for all where no one communicates with each other through the online app they have specifically so they can all access data about me from each other! Neat!)

Anyway that was a major relief and I was ready to cry because they said that this should work really well with the conditions and symptoms I have. I’ll probably write something up on the process later (because I would’ve liked a plain English walkthrough of what to expect but that’s ok) but I got my card from the state, which is all digital now, so welcome to the future, I guess.

We headed out to a pretty well reviewed and priced medical dispensary in the area and had a long info session on what would work best for me and landed on some low dose (for now) capsules and gummies. Then we got fried chicken because I’d had enough for one day and went home to see if it would work.

I took a capsule, ate my chicken, and waited. They did advise taking it with a fatty food (could’ve been peanut butter or avocado or anything really; we just got chicken for its uh, health…improving….properties….yeah that sounds right) It took like a solid hour and change to notice anything, and the effects were pretty minor.

I kept trying to explain what was happening to Delade but it was a very subtle thing and hard to get across. Basically the calmest I’ve felt in ages (bonus) and like a slight tiredness, like when you’re tired at the end of the day but not exhausted or like drugged tired if you take something to get to sleep and it hits hard. Just a nice soft calm feeling.

I got brave and tried adding in an extra half a gummy (watermelon flavor!) and that hit much more quickly and mostly just added to the soft feeling. Trying to put it in better words, it was like the different between laying directly on the hard floor, or laying on a puffy blanket on the floor. You can still feel the floor, but it’s much more comfortable than otherwise. I didn’t really feel particularly loopy other than finding a few things funnier than they probably actually were. I think I would compare it in drowsiness more to like…if you’ve been given an opioid after surgery or dental work or something, it’s kind of more like that than feeling just knocked right out. I always felt like these kinds of things gave me a sort of “cozy,” safe feeling while still being conscious enough to do some light things, and this was similar. Everybody’s different though so I might be a weirdo.

So yeah, it does work! I wasn’t expecting like a 100% change in pain levels, and this will definitely take some fine tuning to get right, but there was a difference for sure. Carry On (Part 04)

It was two weeks later, back in Austin and at her desk, that Sara finally found out what had happened to the man that had made her life a living hell ever since that fateful bus trip to her mother’s. After some of the other passengers had pulled the woman off of her, she had been taken to the hospital by one of the younger cops. He had been nice enough, told her not to be too hard on herself and that everything would turn out ok. She had appreciated his kind words, but had obviously still been consumed by worry over the poor kid that lunatic had taken into the desert.

From there she had given the cop her number and asked to be kept in the loop. He had told her that he’d tell her what he could, but that he couldn’t promise anything. Then she’d called her mother and asked her to come get her in New Mexico. Mom had made it in good time, all things considered, and had been horrified to hear what had happened. As they’d driven back to Cali, Sara had gotten an unexpected call from the cop who had taken her to the hospital. 

The baby was fine he’d told her, though the parents were still riled up. Apparently the man had left the kid at the bottom of the embankment, just feet from where his worried parents had been losing their minds. The man however, remained at large and the cop told her to be careful until she got word that he had been apprehended. She had been thrilled to have her guilt lifted so quickly, but the other half of the news had left her fairly paranoid for the next few weeks, especially when the details of his crime had hit the internet.

Solomon Haggerty had been identified as the man who had fled the Greyhound and his background had been full of instances of violence and signs of severe and unaddressed mental illness. This had all climaxed when he’d taken up a room with an elderly couple and then proceeded to shoot them both in their beds before cutting them into pieces. The torsos and heads had been left behind, but the hands and feet had been located on the Greyhound in his carry on. It looked like he had literally finished cutting them up and then got on the bus. Why, no one seemed to know, but it was simply more proof that the man was mentally unwell.

Needless to say, Sara worried that soon the man would be at her doorstep, waiting to add her to his list of victims. This had prompted her to not only buy a new alarm system and host of keychain weaponry, but also a large dog. He was a half pit mix that had been slated for euthanasia due to his habit of nipping at kids and strangers. Unperturbed, (nay, encouraged), by these quirks, Sara had bought him and a muzzle post haste. He was a good dog and big enough to handle the creepy little bastard if he ever decided to pop up.

Now though, as she was looking over some news on Twitter, she saw it. A follow up to the story had just been posted by some low level crime blog, but it looked legit. According to this reporter, Solomon had been found, or at least his remains had. Hikers in the area had found a corpse huddled under a large outcropping of stones and it had just been confirmed via dental records to be the man who had been haunting Sara for weeks now. From what they could tell, he had died of exposure and starvation despite being within walking distance of help or the highway. 

Sara had mixed feelings as she sat there at her desk, rereading the news article. Relief was a big part of it, but so was sadness. This man was clearly unloved and unwell, and to think that he had died so horribly wasn’t exactly a pick me up. A sudden vibration in her pocket announced an incoming call and a quick glance down at her screen showed that it was the cop from the hospital. “I just saw,” she said without introduction, “is it him?”

“Yes ma’am,” the cop said. “Should’ve known I couldn’t beat the internet.”

“Thank you for letting me know,” she said.

“Of course,” he replied and then hung up. He really hadn’t been much of a talker.

“You coming to Barney’s for lunch?” her officemate Elizabeth called to her from the door out of their cramped little cubicle area.

“Yeah, I am,” Sara said, closing her browser and watching the story flit off the screen. 

“Well you look relieved,” Elizabeth said as they made their way out of the office. “Best you’ve looked since your shiner wore off.”

“Very funny,” Sara said. Her coworkers had not been as sensitive about her ordeal as she might have hoped. “Just a big load off my shoulders,” Sara smiled and the two of them headed out onto the street and off to lunch.
