January 31st - Luna Snow

Seol Hee lost her parents at a young age and was cared for by her grandmother. In her young adulthood Seol attended a special academy where she and some of her fellow students founded the K-pop musical group known as 4L1T. 4LIT proved to be a substantial hit and Seol (who chose the stage name ‘Luna’) became a huge star and idol to young people all over South Korea and abroad. 4L1T was asked to perform at The Stark Arena which was connected to a Stark Industries research and development plant. During 4LIT’s performance the arena was attacked by an A.I.M. cell led by the super villain known as Joro Spider. Luna and her bandmates were taken hostage and imprisoned within the factory. Luna attempted to escape and ended up trapped inside a Stark Industries cold fusion reactor. An unforeseen malfunction in the generator somehow altered Luna on a cellularly level, bestowing her cryokinetic abilities. Luna found that could now generate and mentally control different kinds of ice. She could create dark ice that had destructive properties, as well as white ice which had healing properties. Luna used these newfound powers to defeat the Joro Spider and her A.I.M. agents. After the incident Luna became the superhero known as Luna Snow. Luna split her duties as a hero alongside her career as a musician and her being a superhero made 4LIT even more of a sensation and Luna herself a national celebrity. In the midst of the War of the Realms event, Luna aided her fellow heroes, White Fox and Crescent, against an invasion of Fire Demons from the realm of Muspelheim. Luna used her abilities to freeze the water that the fire demons stood on and fired ice shards towards them in order to smother their flames. During the battle she was frozen in a block of ice when Agents of Atlas member Brawn accidentally sprayed water on her. Taken hostage by Sindr, the Queen of Cinders, Luna was rescued by Brawn, who infiltrated the Fire Goblin army with White Fox’s help, teleporting both of them away. After Luna regained her strength, she, alongside Aero and Wave, went through Sindr’s portal to the North Pole in order to prevent the polar ice caps from melting through their combined powers. Upon defeating Sindr’s Asgardian Dragons and preventing the polar ice from melting, Luna and the Agents of Atlas fought against Sindr and her army on the Great Wall of China, ultimately expelling them back to Muspelheim. After Malekith’s defeat, Luna and the Agents helped the Shanghai population recover from the war. Luna has since remained an affiliate member of the Agents of Atlas. The heroine first appeared in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 (2019).

okay but if we take into account how big surtur is and assume they remain a fireball until they’re the equivalent of, say, 25, then we can say that the reason Surtur wanted to destroy Asgard and ‘cause ragnarok’ could’ve been because sindr and hela were going to get married but odin, and by extension Asgard, ruined that and then odin sealed hela away with his magic. 

instead of fighting hela and her army of skeletons and a giant wolf they could've had to face hela and an army and a giant wolf and muspelheim's army of fire demons and sindr herself and her pet fire-dragon

This is really stupid but like. Personally i headcanon that baby fire giants/residents of Muspelheim in the Thor Universe are born as just- balls of fire with a mouth. Like Calcifer from Howls Moving Castle. and as they age they grow bodies and that stoney exoskeleton. So imagine Surtur from Thor Ragnarok holding a small fireball in his hand. That’s his fucking daughter

Like many Kings before him, the King Under the Mountain arranges his marriage for political advantage. Whether they like each other or not is unimportant. 

Tried this from several angles and decided to write something from Princess Shurri’s perspective...had a bit of fun describing her first impression of Thorin.

Well, at least that’s over with.

Shurri, daughter of Sindre, thought to herself. She nodded at the assembled nobles as the King Under the Mountain escorted her to their wedding feast, careful of the unaccustomed weight of her crown. Her eyes took in the glittering hall, the hundreds of guests; she was still getting used to the scale in Erebor. The halls of her father in the Grey Mountains had always seemed so grand, until she came here.

“To the Queen of Erebor! Long may she live!” The King’s chief counselor held up his glass as she reached her seat.  

“The Queen of Erebor!” The shouts rang out around the hall. Shurri raised her glass and drank.

Queen of Erebor does have a nice ring to it, she thought. The child I bear will be King here. Almost makes up for being forced to marry a man like Thorin Oakenshield.

 The negotiations for her hand had begun more than a year ago. Shurri well remembered being paraded in front of the King’s representatives, like some prize filly. There was much talk of her dowry, of what Erebor would guarantee in return. King Sindre was eager to make the match, he felt dark times approaching and needed an alliance with Erebor to ensure his kingdom survived. Shurri was under no illusions, she knew a princess was required to marry whoever her father chose. But she always assumed any suitor would at least make of show of wooing her. She never set eyes on Thorin Oakenshield until she arrived in Erebor, contract in hand.

It was an awkward meeting. Thorin looked her up and down, took the contract and told a servant to show her to her apartments. Shurri was distinctly unimpressed. He bore no resemblance to the likeness she had been shown. He was on the tall side and had good taste in clothes, but she saw nothing else to recommend him. Not to mention he wore the shortest beard she had ever seen among Dwarves, her own was longer. As she made her way through the palace she could see the men’s heads turn as she passed, feel their admiring gazes. Shurri held her head high, she had long enjoyed the reputation as the prettiest princess among all the Families and she was always careful in her choice of dress and jewelry to make sure she kept it. The great King Under the Mountain might not have seen anything he liked, but the other men of Erebor surely did.

 The feast went on long into the night, twelve bells had already sounded when the King and his new Queen headed up the stairs to their apartments. At the gallery Shurri paused, not sure what to expect.

“Your majesty, may I ask that we postpone consummating our marriage until I am between the moons, when I might conceive a child?”

“Of course,” Thorin said, relief in his voice. “I am glad you understand this is a purely political arrangement. We must both play our parts.”

“My part is to bear you an heir,” Shurri said, looking down at her feet. She wasn’t attracted to this man at all, but still felt a bit disappointed he wanted nothing to do with her.

Thorin laid a hand on her arm. “I have already told you my heart is given to another,” he said. “But I hope we can become friends.”

“We must get to know each other first,” Shurri replied, with a curtsy. “Good evening, your majesty.”

Back in her apartments, her maid helping with the heavy wedding dress, Shurri realized she also was relieved not to have to spend this night with her new husband. It would have been very weird, since they hardly knew each other at all. Things would be different if she had been allowed to marry the captain of her father’s guard, who she had loved for years.  

But one day, my son will be King of Erebor! And that was a very comforting thought.

Music is incredibly important to my writing: it sets the mood of scenes, and helps with carrying the emotions from my imagination to the words on the page. So too is it crucial to developing my characters and getting a sense of their backstories and decisions--through lyrics their story may be pieced together, through instrumental themes their aesthetic is established. Marvel’s War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 to debut a new Filipino superhero

As a Filipino, I am thrilled that Korean-American writer Greg Pak is penning this four-part tie-in to the main War of the Realms event. Former “Totally Awesome” Hulk (now Brawn) and current Champions member Amadeus Cho will assemble a team of Asian and Asian American superheroes to battle the threat of Sindr, the Queen of Muspelheim, as she claims Asia as her new Kingdom. Wave is a totally new character from the Philippines (designed by superstar Filipino artist Leinil Francis Yu), and she appears in the first two preview pages (drawn by Gang Hyuk Lim).

Confronting her Chinese counterpart over the north Pacific, their dialog implies they know one another and have met previously; but more importantly, it echoes real-world geopolitics about maritime territorial claims in Asia.

“Pangan” sounds very Filipino; the Triumph Division, the Philippines’ superhero team based in the capital Manila was created by Matt Fraction in 2008′s Invincible Iron Man #2 (where they were unfortunately killed off too, so apparently there’s a new team with either new members or resurrected old members); and Wave is chatting with them in Tagalog, the language which is the basis for Filipino, the national language. Being based in Cebu, however, Wave’s first language would be Cebuano, which is a distinct language and not a dialect.

So now we have an air-based superhero with a water-based superhero against a fire-based supervillain. Based on interviews with Greg Pak other superheroes making appearances are Luna Snow (guess what her powers are), Former Agent of SHIELD and Agent of Atlas Jimmy Woo, Shang-Chi, Silk, Sword Master, Crescent, and Io. All in all, I can’t wait to read New Agents of Atlas #1 when it comes out May 8.

following the events of avengers:endgame how does your character feel about everything that has happened?

amadeus isn’t new to unusual things happening to him or to the world. it was what he practically dealt with ever since he became the leader of the agents of atlas. first day on the job and he dealt with sindr, the queen of cinders, so it didn’t exactly shock him that they had to deal with something like that. but he did feel incredibly lonely when a number of people he knew disappeared, and it was something he wasn’t used to. it was a big relief for him when they came back—only to be separated again when he found himself in this golden place.

what has your character brought with you into the soul stone?

amadeus counted himself a little lucky. he was hulked out and he had his suit on so he’s definitely better than most. amadeus just didn’t like the fact that he just had to choose this time to leave his coyote pup kirby back at base; but he thinks kirby was better off back at base than to run into trouble here.

besides, his brain was a weapon itself. so duh.

give us a bit about your character, tell us how you see them.

okay so amadeus personally still hasn’t got the hang of the whole “team leader” business. it was still a work in progress but he wasn’t as closed off from being the leader as he did when they first started. but if there’s one thing he was confident in, it was his smarts and he was completely comfortable running the numbers for his team—he wasn’t the 7th smartest person in the world for nothing.

Incredible, fresh, updated set of today’s news: while robbie stars on the dark elf realm strikeforce, CHAMPIONS #5 will have adult cyclops slip back into the team’s roster as they fight hordes of invaders (presumably temporarily) and Greg Pak will be writing amadeus re-assembling the all-asian hero team of the Protectors, polished to be the brand-new AGENTS OF ATLAS. And fight against helfire queen Sindr, who’s trying to burn down asia into her new kingdom. (Including 616 debut from luna snow & crescent and lo from Marvel futurefight, and a brand new phillipine heroine called Wave!!)

This might be shaping up to be my favorite marvel event so far.

Where is difficult.

This has been different places all throughout Asia.

This may be Russia. 

But time all runs together. Past, present, future.

There have been a blur of different faces. 

Some familiar. Some new. 

Allies, enemies. They’re all so small.

I am small.

Maybe he was not small always. But in these moments where he gives into the fire and allows it to overtake him, it was impossible not to think that for all of his life he has always been so very small. A small man fighting to keep it together against the entire world. The same man now, nearly lost in the ocean of flame, struggling to keep hold of the reigns and not burn and shrink away to nothing at all. 

Smallness incarnate. 

I am small. 

But he cannot be. He cannot afford to be. He has fully embraced the Phoenix! A small man will lose himself in the flame. And there is no knowing just what will happen then. Only that there will be flame and destruction, and yes, the other side of that coin is rebirth, but he’s tried so hard to fix things.

I am small. 

But he will not be. And so he fights his way back through the fire to this thing that is his body, even if it seems so small and so distant and so disconnected. He comes back a little more into his senses, and takes back control of his life.

He cries out. Which emotion it’s meant to convey, he’s not entirely sure. All he knows is that even after fighting through the fire, there is still more fire. But that is the plan, he remembers now and calms down. A bigger fire will kill another fire. Steal the air, leave nothing to sustain it.

Not all of his team are with him anymore. Some are working with the locals preventing Sindr’s plan to melt the ice caps and steal the world. Refreeze it, prevent the world from drowning. Some are assisting in keeping the populace safe. The others that are still here have pulled the civilians out of his zone of engagement. A lack of oxygen will not only kill the fire. Is this death? He does not know. His opponents’ fires die away. His fire does not. His fire is eternal. Phoenix fire burns evermore.

“YOU WERE WARNED.” That is him. It does not sound quite right. And at the same time, it does. The heat is wrapped around him, warm and comforting. Her fire says that it is right. He cannot hear the answer, if there is one. All that he can hear is the scream of oxygen attempting to rush into the fire, only to be consumed by his own. “YOU ATTACK MY PEOPLE, MY PLANET. YOU CLAIM IT ALL IN THE NAME OF FIRE. DO YOU ENJOY YOUR FIRE NOW?” Faintly he hears someone yelling. He doesn’t try to find out just who. It doesn’t matter. This queen of flames is down on the dirt along with her men. Unlike her men, her flame still burns deep within, though not for lack of trying. She hasn’t answered. Can even fire burn? End this and be sure that the threat doesn’t flare back up. The world is bad and broken enough as is without leaving the door open to shatter it further down the line. The flames flare up and close in just before he’s thrown way off course by some kind of collision from the side. 

“Snap outtah it. She’s already down. You’re an X-Man. No need to go killin’ her. Done enough ah that. We gott’er.” By now they’re miles away, Guthrie depending on his protective field to keep himself safe. Keep on blasting, don’t get hurt. He could push through. He doesn’t want to. It’s a literal breath of fresh air as he’s back out into the oxygen, and Sam’s familiar drawl stuns him back into thinking. Cannonball is right, he does not want this.

By his own hand they’re stopped like they’d never been moving at all, but it’s a peaceful stop. There will be no fighting between X-Men today. 

He knows how his flames back in the Russian town die down as Oya freezes the Flame Giant in place for the moment, and he knows how Colossus talks to the encroaching authorities. The flames within himself do not burn out.

He is fire and life incarnate. He is Phoenix. He has maybe saved the world, or a good chunk of it. Is that enough?
