INSIGHT Group B had completely upped the ante in 1984 with the introduction of the Audi Quattro S1. This specific Quattro was developed to flaunt true power within the golden era of rallying- and it certainly did show off as it was a monster.
The Quattro was very technologically advanced for its time, it implemented a four wheel drive system which had changed rallying forever. It also had a sequential gearbox and a water cooling system for the breaks. Furthermore, the Quattro also had very sophisticated aerodynamics which helped its performance vastly.
From 1984-1987, this car would soar through the Pikes Peak Hillclimb with three variations of the Quattro. As the Quattro was fully capable of tackling the terrain of Pikes Peak, it had won three times.

Okay, today my obsesion is not a car, is a driver. Michèle Mouton.
Tumblr media
1st and only woman on winning a World Rally Championship, she started racing as a co-driver in the 1973, but her first rally as a driver was in the 1974 in the Corcega Rally, driving a 1800cc Alpine A110. She raced multiple rallies with many cars like the Abarth 131 Rally or the Lancia Stratos. In 1981, Audi choose her as her driver to test the Group 4 Audi Quattro Sport with the revolucionary AWD sistem. In that year, she won her first Rally title in the San Remo Rally. She was a driver during the big times of the dangerous Group B
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her carreer with Audi ended in the 1985, after she raced dealing with mechanical problems and the death of her father. She stopped her rally life in 1986 after winning the German Rally Championship with a Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, leaving her with 4 victories and 9 podiums on her rally carreer!
Tumblr media
As extra information, she also raced in many other categories, like Pikes Peak Hillclimb in 1985, being the first non american driver who won the race (she was french), the first (and still the only) woman winning the race, AND BROKE THE TRACK RECORD!

History of Lancia VS Audi and Race for Glory (Film) Context
I watched this film and found it very accurate to the events that occured and overall a good watch if this is what you want to learn about so what I will do here is use the information from the film with the information I research to explain the history. I will bear in mind that some characters from the film don't actually exist and there are dramatisations of events but this is the accurate history which I learnt from the film although fact checked by real life sources.
Audi were kicking Lancia to the ground at every event previously since 1980 when they created the Quattro as it was All wheel drive incresing traction and making it better on most terrains like mud, rock and snow. This won them the 1982 title to which Lancia saw as shameful due to their past rallying history so getting beaten by Audi who were the new kids on the block having been created in 1978 was embarrasing.
So Lancia kept developing their 037 which had let them down in '82 due to gearbox issues so they used it again in '83 let alone the issues of it being 2WD compared to the AWD Quattro and the fact that if they lost then the Lancia Rally Division would be shut down. So due to their limited resources they ran into their first problem being they didnt have money to develop 200 models which is the minimum requirement to enter them so Cesere Fiorio the team leader took the 2 inspectors out for lunch after showing them the first 103 they had and then while they were having lunch his men moved the 103 cars to another lot to claim they had 200 which worked as they were then authorised to race. Then they also needed a racer to enter so they hired Walter Rohrl for select races as he only agreed to do his favourite tracks because he hated high risk rallies where there were jumps and loads of gravel especially when using the 037 as it was so light making it faster on tarmac but making it a nightmare to handle on gravel and very fragile. Also Walter played it so he could do the tarmac races which it was built for so he (the best driver) could get the most out of the car in those stages. Also he wasn't a full time rally driver he did it very on and off rather than to a schedule. So Lancia agreed to his terms to let him race on his terms as he was the most experienced driver out of them all so was crucial.
So the 1983 Season began and Audi went in as the favourites wanting to defend their title from '82 and Lancia went in as the Underdogs in the 2WD car although this car was lighter and faster on tarmac and was easily repairable with a gearbox being able to be replaced in 12 minutes!
Up first was the Monte carlo rally which was forecast for snow and ice which originally would have been a tarmac stage where they would have whooped Audi although Cesere had an idea within the rules book to request the route to be gritted and he had his men clear the snow. He also employed pit stops where they changed from studded to slick tires so the dry parts could be done on slicks and the icier parts on studded tires overall leading to a win with 18 points.
Sweden- Skipped due to Snow and Ice
Portugal- 3rd 14 points losing 1st and 2nd to Audi
Kenya- Skipped due to gravel and rough terrain.
France- Won with all 3 podiums 18 Points
Greece: Won 18 Points
Then in the 7th race (5th entered) which was the New Zeland rally Lancia won and then Audi came second and Lancia also came third even though the driver hit a cow to which it got trapped underneath causing the need of an airlift and some mechanics to fix the car allowing them to finish but dropping some points as they weren't 2nd place giving them to Audi. 1st 18 Points.
Argentina: Gained 10 Points but were dropped for reasons I dont know. My guess was that they didn't nominate themselves to earn championship points in this race. Audi Got all podiums.
Finland: 3rd 14 Points losing 1st and 2nd to Audi
Italy: Won with all podiums 18 Points
Ireland: Skipped due to gravel and jumps
UK: Skipped for reasons above
They decided to not race in some races due to the fact that they would be pointless as they wouldn't stand a chance and it would allow them development time on the car and planning for other events. In the end they won the manufacturers title by 118 points just beating Audi by 2 but Lancia driver Walter Rohrl lost the drivers title to Audi driver Hannu Mikkola. This allowed the Lancia rally program to continue and cemented this rally in history as it was the final time a RWD car (Lancia 037) won the WRC against AWD vehicles.

Source: Season 1983 rally - eWRC-results
Link back to the start: I found that the fake characters were the racing driver called Kurt and the medic Jane Mccoy. Event wise none of them were faked for the film just dramatised rather than having Kurt crash and go into a coma in real life it was an accident with a driver and a cow and they managed to finish the race. Other than this for the sake of plot the information from the film was historically accurate so overall the film taught me everything I needed to know about this topic so the film is majoritaly accurate.
Even so I still fact checked using these sources:

I’m hoping to get a safe, electric or hybrid car, new or used. I currently make a good commission on deals I close, but I need cash now to get to and from work.
Any 4WD mid sized SUV would be great. I have my eyes on an Audi Q7 Quattro. My current Nissan needs a lot of repairs before it’ll run much longer.
My ideal started car is a $5k-7k safe reliable car l, like a 2007 Honda Pilot AWD.
I’ll match all donations up to $3000!
Help me get back on my feet and able my I do my job.

Read the full article
