Behold. The orange thing from Snowdin, or I guess they're technically called "red demon" or sometimes “nacarat jester” which just means “red-orange jester” but those are kinda meh so l've taken to calling them orange thing as a place holder. I wanna call them creamsicle but my friends say that that name sucks 3:<

The Hermaphrodite, or Rebis, in alchemy symbolizes the culmination of the Great Work—the perfect union of opposites. This androgynous figure represents the alchemical fusion of the masculine and feminine principles, embodying the unity of dualities necessary for the creation of the Philosopher’s Stone. The Hermaphrodite stands as the embodiment of balance and the integration of all polarities within the Self, signifying the attainment of wholeness and divine wisdom. This figure illustrates the alchemist’s ultimate goal: to reconcile all opposites within and achieve the perfect, enlightened state. Captive Prince: Historical References and Naming Conventions
Hi all! I've had this idea in my head for a while now, and I finally had some time (and an Ancient Greek dictionary), so I figured I'd give it a shot. I've always been fascinated by Pacat's worldbuilding, particularly the naming conventions, and as a classicist myself, I wanted to dissect them. So that's what this is. My focus is mainly going to be on Akielos since I don't have as in-depth a knowledge of French, but I'll go through some Veretian names too (je n'ai pas étudié le français depuis deux années, mais Arles… je voudrais parler d'Arles…)
I'm not approaching this with any kind of formal, academic structure, so if something wonky gets through, please let me know! And lastly, I have no idea how many of these are intentional on Pacat's part. This analysis is less about authorial intent and more about how the associations inherent in these names can lend to our interpretation of the work. I'll also be doing this analysis over a few different posts since there is a lot I want to cover. For post #1:
Country Names
This post will solely feature Vere and Akielos since that's already a lot, but I will tackle Patras et. al. later on. There's some very interesting stuff there that I would be remiss not to look at. Of our subjects for today, Vere is the simpler, and the one I am absolutely certain Pacat intended, so I'll start with it.
Vere
Disclaimer: I am in love with this choice. The word itself is actually a Classical Latin adverb derived from the adjective "vērus," meaning "true," and in Latin it's spelled "vērē" (though you will not see those macrons in extant texts, those are a modern pronunciation and differentiation aid). Vērē can be translated a handful of ways; often it's used for emphasis, and in that case it's usually translated as "indeed," but "truly," "rightly," "exactly," and "truthfully" all work in different contexts. Extrapolate vērus and its derivatives for around a thousand years and you get the Old French word "verai" (ouah c'est vrai !) which means, well, "true."
It's also close in spelling and pronunciation to the modern French "verre," which means "glass," which isn't entirely relevant, but is cool. It makes me think of shiny, fragile displays of opulence like the Galerie des Glaces in Versailles.
The first reason I really like this name is that it calls back to Artes, the Roman-inspired kingdom that we're told once encompassed all of Vere and Akielos, while still fitting current Veretian (aka half-old-half-modern French) grammar and pronunciation. The second is, naturally, that it fits so well into the series' themes of truth, deception, and verisimilitude. The second we're introduced to Vere, and by extension Laurent, there's a subtle hint there that both he and his country are, at their core, more real, genuine, and truthful than Damen and Akielos. We're already building towards Damen's Kings Rising line, "I have never known a truer man." Even if you don't recognize the Latin, your brain will make the connection between Vere and verisimilitude later. It's perfect, 10/10 Pacat, could not have done it better.
And just for fun: a Latin example!
Commentarii de Bello Civili, 2:27. Latin and English available here.
Hi, sive vere quam habuerant opinionem ad eum perferunt, sive etiam auribus Vari serviunt…
Loeb Translation: "Whether they convey to him the opinion that they really held, or whether they only flatter his ears…" (165)
Slightly more literal translation (by me): "Whether these ones truly convey to him the opinion as they held it, or rather are subservient to Varius' ears…"
Akielos
The name "Akielos" is a lot more… nebulous. I don't know if there is a Greek print of Captive Prince, but my guess is it would be spelled Άκιελος (modern Greek speakers please weigh in, I'm only a year or so into Ancient Greek so I haven't really touched accent marks). That doesn't map neatly to any modern or ancient greek word—at least that I know of. What is does remind me of is Ἀχιλῆος (Achileos) from Ἀχιλλεύς (Achilleus), aka, Achilles. They're so close that I actually realized lately I had unconsciously been pronouncing Akielos as "Akileos" for a while; and in fact, this makes the Veretian spelling "Achelos" make a bit more sense. English and French both use a hard "ch" to represent χ in Greek words; so I imagine, in universe, that the word might actually be spelled Άχιελος. It wouldn't even surprise me if this was the way Pacat originally wanted to spell it, but had to change it for ease of comprehension.
I did have some other interpretations of the name, but I think this is the strongest. Because in addition to the obvious association, the name Ἀχιλλεύς is thought to be derived from the words ἄχος, "distress/grief" and λαός, "people," making it either "the grief" or "grief of/to the people" depending on who you ask (you rely on cases for that sort of distinction in Greek and they're not exactly present here. iykyk).
I really like the idea of Akielos being associated with grief; we're first introduced to it as a country in mourning, and then later on, as the cause of grief in Delfeur. And then you have the association with Achilles, himself a prolific brother killer, who Pacat references later in 'The Fall of Inachtos,' our in-universe Iliad. Insane levels of grief on grief on grief. Plus, because it looks closer to the genitive form, I automatically associate it with the opening line of the Iliad:
μῆνιν ἄειδε θεὰ Πηληϊάδεω Ἀχιλῆος
menin aeide thea Peleiadeo Achileos
Sing, goddess, the anger of Achilles, Peleus' son
So we can throw a little rage into the equation. As a treat.
Also important to note that the -os there is a masculine ending. It doesn't have the most bearing, but it does mean that if we want to be strictly accurate to Ancient (and modern!) Greek grammar, I have to throw a quick article in front of it, making our final "how do the Akielons spell Akielos?" answer: ὁ Άχιελος ("ho Achielos"). The ὁ here is equivalent to le in French, with the major distinction being that in French, you don't typically need an article in front of a proper noun, whereas you do in Greek.
That's it for today's analysis! See you guys next time around for Patras, Artes, and (maybe) Arles, Ios, and Delfeur/Delpha.

I saw your answer about art experiences. How do you feel things from literature? I am consistently disconnected from things I try to feel from, like I read The Glass Menagerie and it was good, even, but nothing came of it, and usually it is so much less than that.
I thought it might be something like Having A Coke With You, where the art is superceded by real human relationships — and I actually did understand Having A Coke With You for a while, and it was kind of incredible, but now I look at descriptions that resonated me not two months ago and they're just empty. I don't think having friends did that.
I just want this to be me, I want to feel things so much, especially without looking on it from a consumer's perspective (cf. rayne fisher-quam's standing on the shoulders of complex female characters), which I feel is hindering all of this. I feel like I'm missing out on one of the great experiences of life, the connection and meaning that comes from art.
I watched Greg Guevara's video on art experiences, where he said that everyone is overstimulated and spreading out their art experiences into meaningless social media bits, and I don't know how to change that. I saw a play today and I didn't understand it and I was bored, even, and it didn't change me. I needed it to change me into someone who loved it.
I read Anna Karenina in eighth grade and pushed through it and it was a comfort book and I related to Levin but I don't think I understood it, even (I don't have the book anymore). My friend – I have a bad habit of comparing myself to others, I know, but it's relevant – reads Crime and Punishment and feels things. I couldn't even get through the first part of War and Peace.
I'm sorry for the scatteredness, I write on my phone and I find it difficult to organize my thoughts here. I'm sorry for sending this to you, and I hope you feel free to delete it. Lastly, I'm sorry if you cannot answer this, if this is outside your experience.
Tumblr media
i have a weird framing and personal philosophy about this subject that i hope does not come off as unsatisfactory to you but bear with me. i'm pretty sure i know this feeling; this is the feeling i get when i'm exposed to the wondrous, marvelous beauty of unspoiled nature. i could not give two shits about the glorious national parks of this genuinely gorgeous country despite my family dragging me all over the continental US for summer break as far as the family van would take us. i have seen some of the most spectacular sights this country can offer, from the grand canyon to the redwoods of california to the devils tower to yellowstone and so many more. and i tell you i stare at it dead-eyed like a fish. i know i should be feeling something, everyone else is. but when i see old faithful erupt all i could think about was how i could see water at home. absolutely 0 spiritual or emotional connection. even landscape paintings leave me cold. i can appreciate and understand the aesthetic value in what i'm seeing, but its like it stops at my eyes and never penetrates my brain.
but i have just accepted that there are things i simply will not be able to experience in my lifetime. this has always been the case for me being less than 5 ft tall with most things in life, but dont read that as self-pitying lore dropping. because the secret is that it's not really that big of a deal to not be able to do things. i might have 0 memories of yellowstone that aren't "insane thing that happened to us" but as an adult i can pursue things i actually do like instead of trying to force myself to FEEL something my brain isn't wired for.
maybe your relationship with reading is the same. you understand literature's grand purpose in the wide tapestry of history or whatever and have seen people have rapturous moments of artistic connection with specific books, but that experience is completely foreign to you. you can even read a book and enjoy it, like how i think the prismatic spring IS pretty fucking sick, but whatever ethereal feeling youre supposed to feel never materialize. thankfully, i promise you that its not a big deal. and now i never have to visit a national park again until i force my children to go see them because it's good for them or whatever. i can sit at home and experience art i DO get that feeling from.
anyway, in short: read things with no expectations of how you're "supposed" to feel about them and just enjoy a pretty good story. keep throwing yourself into artistic pursuits you do enjoy and feel connected to. and try new ones! you never know what will activate your brain

I saw someone asking why I labeled something as Peko/Buki even tho I'm a Kuzu/Peko shipper. Other then the fact multishippers exist, I didn't consider that as a Kuzu/Peko comic. Ibuki expressed more interest in Peko than Fuyuhiko.
Call me asexual but I don't think just because Fuyuhiko was close to Peko's hip, it should be considered explicit shipping.
So just to be clear on my stance, I am okay with you ppl labeling my art as any ship but there are some boundaries.
Don't label it with problematic ships like incest or age gap.
If the art is clearly about one couple, don't make it about another. But if it's just a group of ppl chilling then you can find whatever couple you like.
I personally hate Mahi/Peko but I know I'm gonna draw things exploring Mahiru's crush on Peko so that's on me if ppl interpret it that way. Just don't be weird, because I have no quams with never drawing Peko and Mahiru within 5 feet of each other. I've drawn Case 2 ten times and I've only drawn Mahiru once.
I made a list of Peko's relationship with others if you wanna know my stance on her ships.
Hajime -I will never let people forget Hajime has a canon crush on Peko. Besides that, Hajime is Peko's first true friend. Outside of Fuyuhiko, Hajime is the only person Peko feels comfortable confiding in her secrets. He doesn't judge and is very kind. Meanwhile Hajime goes to Peko when he needs a cool headed and rational opinion.
Chiaki - Queerplatonic, they snuggle a lot. Chiaki is chill and her games makes it easier for Peko who has no experience talking to people have things to relate to. Peko understands when Chiaki is emotionless for the most part and then burst into excitement when it's something she's passionate about. They developed their own little language in those situations.
Nagito - Nagito likes to take advantage of Peko’s kindness and clings to her. Peko doesn’t mind hanging out with Nagito but stares dagger into him when he’s being too forward with others (he doesn’t read social cues so he’s not gonna catch it). Nagito thinks of himself as a diet Fuyuhiko. As long as Peko provides support, he'll look out for her.
Teruteru - He's super turned on by Peko but gets flustered when she genuinely cares about him (turns out he does not have a mommy kink). Peko enjoys Teruteru teaching her about cooking so the two eventually bond over that.
Imposter - Peko’s best friend on the island. They both relate to not knowing who they’re supposed to be. At the same time, they don’t see each other as just victims. They’re both people trying to grow and become better. When these two are together some say they're TOO COOL (actually Ibuki is the only one that said this)
Mahiru - Mahiru has a giant crush on Peko. At first she believe she knows what’s best for her and tries to takes her away from Fuyuhiko. Once she accepts Peko doesn’t want her help, she tries to be happy for Peko and Fuyuhiko.
Hiyoko: Is jealous of Peko so she lashes out at her a lot. Originally it was for looking mature/sexy and gardening Mahiru’s attraction. But after she learned of Peko’s past, she’s jealous that she didn’t have her own bodyguard to protect her from the multiple assassination attacks she went through.
Ibuki: Queerplatonic, they kiss A LOT. Ibuki loves seeing Peko awkwardly cheer for her at concerts (imagine Pearl from Steven Universe type of awkward) Peko made Ibuki realize that quiet is okay. Because only when it’s quiet, she can hear Peko’s heart beat speed up. I think they would be a cute fling but these two come from two different worlds. Ibuki is a party rocking planet and Peko is a silent moon. Maybe if the stars aligned they could've made it work. But that doesn't mean you can't appreciate eclipses.
Mikan: Mikan’s ability to read micro facial expressions helps her interpret a lot of Peko’s hidden emotions. Peko likes Mikan but Mikan mistaken Peko’s quietness with secret resentment (she can read that Peko isn’t mad but sometimes mental illness makes you ignore facts). Mikan is had to get close to and Peko doesn't have the social understanding to truly know her.
Gundham: He has adopted her as his own. He feels the need to protect this person on par with his traumatic backstory. She must realize this too, that’s why she keeps flocking to him and his four dark devas. Meanwhile Peko only understands 50% of what he’s saying but she’s trying. Sonia (and Gonta in non despair AU) has to interpret sometimes. Giant Big Brother and Little Sister energy.
Sonia: Sonia is the extrovert who adopts an introvert. Sonia wants to hang out with all her classmates and one of the few who doesn't see Peko cool demeanor as disinterest. Sonia is the only one who can relate to Peko's isolation and only she knows the kind of loneliness that can come with being around others. Peko doesn't realize this on her part and it hurts Sonia. But Sonia doesn't stop trying.
Kazuichi: Scared and aroused by Peko. I head anon one time his trash picking robot accidentally took Peko’s sword and it exploded. Kazuichi was so scared to admit it to Peko but once he did - Peko was more concerned about him than her sword. He’s convinced she’s in love with him and begs Fuyuhiko to ask her out for him. Peko bluntly declines.
Nekomaru - Nekomaru passionately talks with Peko about a lot of things. At first it was Kendo, then it was training, proper diet, and it spiraled into Nekomaru talking excitably about his day. Peko is a good listener but even she can go deaf from all the yelling. Ibuki bails her out sometimes. I think Nekomaru and Sonia are the only people who know how to push Peko out of her comfort zone without overstepping. Ibuki can be too excited in getting Peko to do new things. Hajime and Chiaki doesn't see a problem with Peko doing her own thing.
Akane - The girls bond over being asexual together. No talk about love or mushy stuff. They talk with battle! At least according to Akane. Peko is hesitant to train with Akane because she believes only someone strong like Sakura could handle her blade. Akane takes that as an open challenge and tries to blindside Peko until she takes her seriously. Akane does have to learn boundaries at one point. Maybe the person who grew up in constant danger doesn't want to keep looking over her shoulders in case her classmates attack her.
Fuyuhiko - Ultimately, though everything, this blog will always be a Kuzu/Peko blog. Growing up, Fuyuhiko developed a crush on Peko but never acted on it. Only after a chance conversation with Sakura about what being in love is like, Peko realized in middle school she is in love with Fuyuhiko. By that point their relationship is strained. Fuyuhiko is constantly telling Peko he doesn't need a tool and pretend they don't know each other. Peko doesn't want to be forgotten by Fuyuhiko, this person she spent everyday with. She planned on asking him out, as equals, but then Twilight Syndrome Murder happened. There was no time for love when there was so much hate in his heart. Eventually after everything, the two realizes they need each other. Fuyuhiko only pushed Peko away because he thought she couldn't grow as a person if she was constantly worried about him. Peko realizes she can still care and protect Fuyuhiko as a fellow warrior by his side. These two understand each other so well that they don't need to talk. But this also leads to terrible miscommunications.

Fic-tober Masterlist
Heart Set on Amulets Universe Masterlist (this is after The Color of Us)
Summary: Dalton needs help translating a letter written in Latin.
Warnings: fluff, Google translate Latin. 0.9k+ words
A/N: I know I said this would be longer but I honestly had no idea how to make it longer. Next week (the last Witchy Wednesday) will be a longer one-shot, though! I hope you enjoy! :)
Tumblr media
You haven’t seen Dalton since you kissed last week. You thought maybe it was the start of something more, but then he disappeared. Worried that the amulet was no longer working and that he wasn’t sleeping, you decide to push your anxiety and anti-social tendencies out of the way and pay him a visit to his dorm.
The walk across campus to Dalton’s dorm is full of people, which puts a dent in the strength and resolve you had when you left. When you reach his door, you freeze, wondering if he doesn’t want to see you and how he’ll react.
“I thought I felt a cold breeze,” Dalton teases as he opens the door.
“That’s ghosts,” you point out weakly.
“Are you okay? You’ve been standing out here for like three minutes,” he says as he closes the door behind you.
“I’m fine. Are you? Is the amulet still working? Can you sleep? Because if it isn’t working, I should be able to fix it; I’ll just put a new spell on it and it will basically reset and begin-“
Dalton kisses you to stop your rambling, his hands holding your cheeks as he pulls you close. Breaking away, he smiles at you and steps back, letting his hands fall to your shoulders.
“The amulet is working perfectly. I haven’t slept this well in… ever. I’m sorry for disappearing, I just got a big assignment from Professor Armagan and I’ve been doing a ton of research preparing for it,” Dalton lies.
It’s a partial lie, though. The amulet is still working, and he’s sleeping great. And he does have an art project, but that’s not what he’s been researching. He has been spending every moment of his free time trying to create a plan to tell you he loves you, but all he has is a poorly translated letter written in Latin.
“Oh. What’s the project? I mean, what are you researching for it?”
Dalton panics and says the first word that pops into his mind, which, unfortunately, is “Witchcraft.”
He mentally slaps himself, wondering why, of all the things he could have said, he picked the one thing you’re practically an expert on. Why couldn’t he have said zoology or the psychology of people who shop at Walmart versus Target?
“Do you want help?” you ask. “I mean, I don’t want to step on your toes, obviously you know what you’re looking for and everything, but if you want help, I’d be happy to.”
Dalton considers his options. If he says he doesn’t want help, he has to find another idea to tell you, but if he accepts, he can ask you to translate the letter and hope it goes well.
“I would love some help. I’m having trouble translating some Latin, can you help me with that?”
“Of course! Is it a spell, or?”
Dalton stands, letting you sit in his chair as he looks through his sketchbook for the letter.
“It’s a letter to a witch.”
“To a witch?” you repeat.
“Yeah. From a regular human,” he clarifies, handing you the paper.
You begin reading the letter to yourself, pausing after the first line.
Nunc te videre scio quid in vita volui (Now that I see you, I know what I wanted in life).
Glancing at Dalton, you see him wringing his fingers together like he’s nervous.
Etsi mihi non loqueris, vocem tuam ad respirandum audire oportuit (Even though you didn’t speak to me, I needed to hear your voice to breathe).
You see Dalton moving in your peripheral but ignore him, enraptured by the letter.
Ego postulo magi squam aliquid et ego volo tibi dicere quam ego sentio (I need you more than anything, and I want to tell you how I feel).
Dixisti aura mea rosea est quia amorem sentio, sed non facio. Ego non sentio amare te, quia ego sum in amore cum te. Te amo (You said my aura is pink because I feel love, but I don’t. I don’t feel love because I’m in love with you. I love you.)
Tears are streaming down your face as you turn to face Dalton.
“Did you write this?” you ask, holding the letter up.
“I did,” he answers quietly.
“Te amo,” you whisper before standing and hugging him tightly. “Te amo,” you repeat as his arms wrap around you, and he dips his head to speak against your neck.
“Te amo,” he says against your skin. “I love you so much.”
“Dalton,” you say as you pull back slightly. “Did you mean it when you said you’d go to New Mexico with me? To get answers?”
 “I did.”
“Good, because I never want to leave you.”
“And you’ll never have to. I’m not leaving you; I love you.”
Dalton hugs you again and sits on his bed, pulling you into his lap.
“Be honest, how bad was the Latin?” he asks.
“I’ve seen worse. I mean, I understood it, so no complaints.”
“No complaints,” Dalton repeats, smiling.
“It certainly helped when I got to the end and read that you love me.”
“Good. So, when are we leaving for New Mexico?”
“As soon as Specs messages me back, I guess.”
“To learn about the woman who gave you the amulet?”
You nod and push your fingers into Dalton’s hair before kissing him again. He’d go anywhere with you, he thinks.

“In Freemasonry, the pomegranate is an emblem of the spiritual communion that binds Masons together during an initiation ceremony in the Lodge and gives life to what we may call “the fruit of Brotherhood”.
The bitter, hard bark that conceals its delectable pulp represents the contrast between appearances and truth.
The vivid crimson granules personify the Brethren, whilst each chamber that contains those granules epitomizes a Masonic Lodge.
The concept of the pomegranate being a symbol of unity is reinforced even in the Templar Tradition.
Before every battle the Knights recited The Psalm of Brotherhood or Fraternal Life (Psalm 133 – “Ecce quam bonum“) a sacred hymn that encapsulated the Masonic concept of remaining strong by resonating in harmony.”

𝐀𝐦𝐨𝐫, 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨
1075 "[...] Nam certe purast sanis magis inde voluptas
quam miseris. Etenim potiundi tempore in ipso
fluctuant incertis erroribus ardor amantum
1085 blandaque refrenat morsus admixta voluptas."

1075 "[...] Voluptuousness is more clear to the wise than to the foolish wretches.
In fact, right at the moment of full possession,
the ardor of lovers fluctuates in uncertain waves
who do not know what to first enjoy with their eyes and hands.
They press tight the creature they desire, inflict pain
1080 to her body, and often bite the tender lips to blood,
they nail her with kisses, for pleasure is not pure,
and there are dark impulses that push to tear the object,
whatever it is, from which the germs of that fury arise.
It hardly attenuates the torment Venus in the act of love,
1085 mitigates the bite, to which it is mixed, the joy of the senses."
Titus Lucretius Carus, vv. 1075-1085, De Rerum Natura IV liber.
