Full Moon Features has released Puppet Master 1:1 scale deluxe replicas designed by Tom Devlin's 1313FX, who created the puppets for Puppet Master X: Axis Rising and Puppet Master: Axis Termination.

Based on the original 1989 cult classic, the line consists of Blade ($220), Jester ($220), Pinehad ($220), and Tunneler ($200). Each one is numbered and comes with a hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity and a display base.

A group of magically animated puppets commit murders in their master’s name.

 One of the strengths of this franchise is that the puppets are oddly likeable despite their tendency to kill and each are different with their own kind of charm. It’s also entertaining for horror fans since each puppet has a specific way of killing and this leads to inventive and occasionally even good effects in which the puppets move about and murder, although the quality of this varies wildly.

 Another thing that varies a great deal is the quality of the acting in each film. Some of them are pretty good, others are awful and they can barely get their lines out, and in Termination particularly the acting isn’t terrible but they speak so slowly that it’s a chore to watch. Legacy is a pointless contribution since it’s just a compilation of the previous films with only a couple of short new scenes framing it.

 The earlier films are easily some of the better ones because their plots are more original and they vaguely make sense. There is even some attempt to create lore across the series but there is a whole lot of inconsistency here too. Actors frequently change between films, the details of Toulon’s background vary, even the puppets disappear and others replace them between films with no explanation, and some later films retcon previous ones entirely.

 The last several films are too bad to be worth watching. 1-5, Curse, Retro, and possibly Axis of Evil are enjoyable enough and have coherent plots but the others either have acting that is so bad that it’s distracting and Littlest Reich is better quality technically and with acting but most of the middle is the slaughter of strangers the audience has little or no investment in and then ends very disappointingly.

 -The hotel in the first film was a miniature held in front of a real hotel using forced perspective to look real.

-The tagline of the third film is “When good puppets go bad” except they’re fighting Nazis in that one which isn’t really bad behaviour.

-The puppet Blitzkrieg is made of a remote control car with a Nazi flag attached to hide the antennae.

Puppet Master: Axis Termination will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on November 27 via Full Moon Features. It marks the eleventh installment in the long-running Puppet Master franchise.

Axis Termination is the conclusion conclusion to the World War II-set Axis trilogy, following Axis of Evil and Axis Rising. It’s directed by Full Moon head honcho Charles Band, who produced the entire Puppet Master franchise and helmed several entries.
