is a zine that showcases poetry written by h moon. the poetry ranges from romantic to serious to silly. poetry can be used as a kind of therapy for many people including me. 

i was first encouraged to write poetry by a late professor so i would like to dedicate this collection to him. i thank him for all that he taught me and all the ways that he helped at a particularly bad time for me.

My Hidden Key

There is a key

I used it to lock

that part of my heart

where all my feelings are

buried inside

I did my best

to make sure this key

would never be found again

the feelings there too painful

to relive

Then serendipity changed everything

you walked into my life

carrying my hidden key

knowing that opening that door

was necessary

I needed to know

what love truly felt like

to heal my heart so

it feels safe to be

loved again

We are stronger as one

hand in hand together

nothing can ever stop us

our love is destined to

last forever

Any word can run mad with itself, and with evisceration of itself

& there is no word for living through this, there is no word for

witnessing

our beloved fail piecemeal, no word to speak the itch

inside the fingers to be off, candle wax thinning to the bone-wick,

no word conveying the centering toward a more & more

essential which is itself essential to nothing & no one

but ourselves, in useless love, in unsupporting darkness, tongues

numb and as slow as sick dogs.

Publishers' Binding Thursday

This week we're sharing a book with a beautiful cover and beautiful illustrations. This is The Bells and Other Poems by American writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) with illustrations by French-British illustrator Edmund Dulac (1882-1953). It was published by Hodder and Stoughton internationally circa 1912. Poe is best known for his Gothic short fiction and poetry while Dulac was known mainly for his illustrations for books like Jane Eyre, The Tempest, various fairy tales and more—many through an association with Hodder and Stoughton.

The cover features a pattern featuring bells and flourishes stamped in gold that matches the endpapers. The illustrations are dark and ethereal, sometimes to the point of creepiness, and really bring out the gothic elements of Poe's poems.

I wanted to post something I really like for my last post here at UWM Special Collections and this book fits the bill! I love a gothic vibe and some beautiful decoration! I am also sad that I won't get to work with materials like these as often and that I will be leaving all the wonderful folks here. But I have very much enjoyed my 8 and a half years here and sharing all of the amazing things in our collections with our friends on social media!
