1 Corinthians 3:18–20
18 Μηδεὶς ἑαυτὸν ἐξαπατάτω· εἴ τις δοκεῖ σοφὸς εἶναι ἐν ὑμῖν ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ, μωρὸς γενέσθω, ἵνα γένηται σοφός. 19 ἡ γὰρ σοφία τοῦ κόσμου τούτου μωρία παρὰ τῷ θεῷ ἐστιν. γέγραπται γάρ, Ὁ δρασσόμενος τοὺς σοφοὺς ἐν τῇ πανουργίᾳ αὐτῶν· 20 καὶ πάλιν, Κύριος γινώσκει τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς τῶν σοφῶν ὅτι εἰσὶν μάταιοι.

18 No one must deceive himself; if anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, he must become dull, in order that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is dullness before God. For it has been written, “He is the one seizing the wise in their craftiness;” 20 and again, “The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise That they are empty.”

ἐξαπατάω (6x) is an intensified form of ἀπατάω (3x) “I deceive”, itself from ἡ ἀπάτη (7x) “deceit; the ἐκ- prefix indicates the completeness of the deception. The substantival μηδεὶς is the subject of the present 3s imperative ἐξαπατάτω and reflexive pronoun ἑαυτὸν is the direct object. The present-tense suggests a prohibition of an activity already in progress.
The accent from the enclitic τις has fallen back onto εἴ. εἰ introduces the protasis of a first-class conditional statement. The indefinite pronoun τις is the subject of the present δοκεῖ (from δοκέω); the present infinitive εἶναι (from εἰμί) denotes content after a verb of mental perception (Wallace 605); the adjective σοφὸς (“wise”; see note on v. 19) is predicate. As the previous clause makes clear, the idea is not, “seems to be wise” (i.e., by others), but reflexively, “thinks himself wise” (so most translations, e.g., HCSB: “If anyone among you thinks he is wise”). The prepositional phrase ἐν ὑμῖν limits τις. The near-demonstrative pronoun τούτῳ is attributive with τῷ αἰῶνι; demonstrative pronouns do not take a repeated article when in the second attributive position as they are already inherently definite. The preposition ἐν modifies σοφὸς and is locative/temporal, denoting adherence to this world’s system (NIV: “by the standards of this age”; NIGTC: “wise in terms of this world order”). Paul seems to intend something of an oxymoron with the double usage of ἐν; those “among” you should no longer be “in” the world.
In the apodosis of the condition, the adjective μωρὸς (“foolish”; see note on 1:25) is predicate with the 2nd aorist 3s imperative γενέσθω (from γίνομαι). The unexpressed subject of the verb is the same as τις above.
ἵνα + subjunctive indicates purpose with the above imperative. After the 2nd aorist subjunctive γένηται (from γίνομαι), the adjective σοφός (“wise”; see note on v. 19) is predicate.
3:19
ἡ σοφία, modified by descriptive genitive τοῦ κόσμου τούτου, is the subject of the present ἐστιν (from εἰμί) and the adjective μωρία (“foolishness”; see note on 1:18) is predicate. The preposition phrase παρὰ with the dative τῷ θεῷ denotes viewpoint, “in the sight or judgment of someone” (BDAG). NIGTC, however, takes the preposition in its original spatial sense (“beside, alongside”), saying that NRSV’s “with” (so also NET, HCSB) ‘undertranslates’, while NIV’s “in God’s sight” is possible but ‘loses the vivid force of a quasi-spatial metaphor which turns on being alongside.’ Contextually, μωρία παρὰ τῷ θεῷ is the counterpoint to σοφὸς ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ above; what is wisdom from the world’s perspective is foolishness from God’s perspective.

The first citation comes from Job 5:13, and does not follow the LXX (which reads ὁ καταλαμβάνων σοφοὺς ἐν τῇ φρονήσει); Paul may be translating directly from the Hebrew.
The hapax legomenon δράσσομαι is literally, “I take by the handful, grasp by the hand”, from the same root as ἡ δραχμή (3x), a coin worth the same as a handful of silver; figuratively, “I catch, seize” (BDAG). The articular present participle ὁ δρασσόμενος is a pendant nominative. In its context in the LXX, the pendant is not unusual, lying as it does in a long string of attributive participles talking about the Lord. Here, it is to be translated as a finite verb (“He catches ...”). The articular adjective τοὺς σοφοὺς (“wise”; see note on v. 19) is substantival and the direct object of the participle.
ἡ πανουργία (5x) comes from πᾶν + τό ἔργον and literally refers to, “[the doing of] every deed”, i.e., the willingness to do anything to achieve one’s aim (cf. πανοῦργος, 1x, “crafty”); BDAG: “cunning, craftiness, trickery”; ICC: “cleverness”. τῇ πανουργίᾳ is modified by the subjective genitive αὐτῶν referring to the wise. The preposition ἐν is instrumental. Paul’s switch to πανουργία from the LXX’s φρόνησις better reflects the underlying Hebrew עֹרֶם orem (NIGTC).
3:20
καὶ πάλιν introduces a second OT citation, modifying an implied γέγραπται. The second citation is close to the LXX of 93:11 (94:11 MT), except that Paul has replaced τῶν ἀνθρώπων with τῶν σοφῶν; ἄνθρωπος better reflects the Hebrew, but σοφός matches the context of the Psalm (ICC, NIGTC).
ὁ διαλογισμός (14x) can refer to the process of thinking (“reasonings”, NASB, HCSB) or the outcome (“thoughts”, NRSV, NIV, NET). τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς is the direct object of the present γινώσκει (from γινώσκω) and κύριος is the subject. τῶν σοφῶν (“wise”; see note on v. 19) is a subjective genitive.
ὅτι introduces indirect discourse after a verb of cognition. It is not uncommon in the NT to find the subject of a dependent clause (here, “thoughts”) attracted out of the content clause to be the direct object of the verb of perception (i.e., “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are ...” = “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are ...”). The adjective μάταιος (6x) is, “idle, empty, fruitless, useless, powerless, lacking truth” (BDAG); NRSV, NIV, NET: “futile”; HCSB: “meaningless”. “The thoughts of the wise” is the unexpressed subject of the present εἰσὶν (from εἰμί) and μάταιοι is predicate.

Ever faithful and supportive Father, my rock and protection - Your comfort brings me peace and joy - I ask forgiveness for the times I knowingly and mistakenly think You won't see or pay attention to my selfishness and distracted wandering from Your will... and give thanks that You do not, will not, leave me in spite of myself... May Your Holy Spirit continue to remind me of Your presence - seeing and hearing and knowing my thoughts, even before they form themselves into words and actions... In the Name of Your Son and my savior Jesus, and for Your glory in all things in my life and the lives of those around me...
