This week, EVERYTHING I'm working on is in the ugly stage! I feel a bit shit about it all, so I'm posting all the WIPs because compiling a post often makes me feel better.

These guys... *sigh*

I tried drybrushing with silver early on. Not doing that again. I'm so temped to put them back in the acetone and start over, but I'm going to press on with the two with Mark VII helmets. I still need to decide about the techmarine, have a new tech arm to add to him as he currently only has one sad mechadendrite you can't even see from the front, and I want to fill in the crosslike symbol on his helmet.

A friend gave me this mini he made ages ago. She had no head for seven years. I thought the solution was to give her as many heads as I could. Probably should have planned out where to put the heads first, but I think she'll probably turn out okay. Need to wash her and start repainting soon.

I bought these two printed proxy minis very early on in writing my Iron Warrior/Red Corsair story. The characters changed by the end. Having the Iron Warrior as a warpsmith doesn't really make sense with the way the story ended up. Still, it's a cool-looking mini. The Red Corsair is unfortunately Primaris sized while the Iron Warrior is more like a Firstborn with good proportions... Same as my Thousand Sons, actually. I meant for both to be Firstborn, but it's whatever. Going to paint them anyway. The Red Corsair will be holding the Iron Warrior's helmet.

This Interrogator is the the only one of my current projects that is turning out as intended so far, except I slightly misrotated one arm. Oh well. He's handsome and I'm relatively pleased with him. He is tiny, which is what I wanted, but I'm a bit scared to paint him. Might leave him like this until I have the rest of his team assembled. Need to pick up a skitto with a rifle or auspex next...

I also have a Kill Team worth of kroot for my spouse, but they haven't told me what colour they want those yet. If they don't tell me soon, the kroot are going to end up Nocturnean...

He feels like a stranger in his own skin.

A funny thing to say when he doesn't have real skin. Puppet parts locked together to appear human.

But maybe that's the point. He isn't human and that's why his entire being is unnatural.

Fingers trace against his back, slipping into cracked holes that were sockets for something that should have turned him into something that felt right.

It failed. He was never meant to feel safe.

He was always meant to feel like he was disconnected from his shell, like a specimen on the doctor's table to be taken apart and put back together as the doctor wished.

He was always meant to fail to be what we was created for, called useless by his mother and have his dreams stolen by others.

He was always meant to feel like he doesn't fall in line. Deciding to be a person that he was not meant to be. And no matter how hard he tries he will never quite feel like that person.

He dips his fingers into the cracks of his arm and face, knowing that no matter what he'll do, he'll always be...

Not himself.

since my last post on the Anubis proxy, I've also started and finished a proxy for its sibling mech, the Osiris, as well as some practice in modeling out hex friendly structures and 6mm scale vehicles. for now, I'll just be working on making sure these a fully printable.

Proxy Review!

I really enjoyed painting minis for my spouse's Thousand Sons characters, so I decided to do the same for a few of my own. While I initially planned to kitbash and convert, I stumbled across pictures of Artel W's minis while looking for suitable bits.

And there they were! Two of my guys, sitting predesigned in their store. I had to have them.

These minis took well over a month to come from the USA, but holy shit. The quality! I thought my resin Thousand Sons Librarian Consul from Forgeworld/GW was printed nicely, but this is on another level. Look how SMOOTH it is! Peep the different shaped slots to make it easy to put together! And the packaging was attractive, too.

I picked up a Red Corsair and an Interrogator. I already have a resin Iron Warrior from a different proxy maker, but I'm worried he's going to look a bit 480p next to these HD models. To compare, I've zoomed into the legs:

Sorry he's covered in primer, I thought I'd slap some on as a test to see if it disguised the layer lines. It didn't. Compare with the Red Corsair bits above!

Also, I found this guy hard to build. I'm going to have to paint in subassembly or I just won't be able to reach parts of the mini. Still going to finish him, though! The difference in quality is not too obvious to the naked eye, and I still like this design.

(I know, none of these are GW plastic or resin, but I don't plan to build armies for these minis. At most, the Interrogator may get used in a casual Kill Team someday.)

Tumblr can never be my main means of engaging in politics and it comes down almost entirely to Tumblr's pathological need to distill The Right Opinion:tm: from any complicated issue.

It's always the most important thing. Not because it helps solve the issue or helps the people impacted, but because The Right Opinion:tm: is a proxy for you, morally, as a person. And every issue needs to be broken into the language that sets the stances of Make You Good or Make You Bad.

And I don't mean this in any generic statement about echo chambers or virtue signaling. Those are separate but related concepts. What I'm talking about is how people are nervous about a topic until one doctrine is crafted which defines the Sports Team Color of our Sports Team, so we can be identified as being on the Us Sports Team, and absolutely not on the Them Sports Team. Because this issue is actually about you and the proxy for you as a person and how people should perceive you so, really, the sooner we figure out the Home Sports Team Colors the sooner you can stop feeling worried.

The moment something new happens is usually the first and last time you'll actually see a range of opinions on it. And some of that is fueled by misinformation! Some in bad faith! When dust settles and clarity is achieved, this helps combat those things, but it's also the moment when the Loudest and most Articulate voices craft the Zeitgeist Opinion and everyone comes to roost around it.

You get people on this site pissed off at AI models that can diagnose cancer from a research paper in 2019 because The Right Opinion is that AI is bad. If you even see a post trying to articulate good uses of AI, well that's someone wearing Packers colors at a Vikings home game, and if you wanna make a point in the "wrong" direction you better be damn articulate about it.

A well-defined set of actions are transphobic. Another set are actually not transphobic, and you'd be transphobic for thinking so. Are you trans and actually your lived experiences differ? Get articulate real fast or shut up. You might be able to eek an exception for yourself, but it's going to require a 10-paragraph post justifying your claim. If you're REALLY good at it though, you might be able to rewrite the Zeitgeist and now anyone who disagrees with you is transphobic. Teams switch uniform styles every now and then, after all.

And it's such a farce because so often it's not actually about the topic at hand. It's about why you should be allowed to be perceived as a good person while toeing outside the fringes of The Right Opinion, why you aren't actually quitting the faith or committing blasphemy or deserving of exile for going off the written word. Or if someone really IS trying to make it about the topic at hand, the ensuing slapfight in the comments needs to be about whether OP has sinned against the covenant.

It's not helpful.
