Wait, was it explicitly said that Angela’s brother disappeared/died in the Akbadain ruins? I’m genuinely wondering also because I may or may not have a whole AU about her brother

Mr. Ascot’s disapproval of Angela

I’ve been thinking about why Randall was in such a rush to propose to Angela after he returned from the ruins… and why Mr. Ascot would have any reason to dislike Angela, of all people.

In Stansbury, when teenage Angela sneaks into Randall’s house with Hershel, Angela says: ‘Randy’s father isn’t that bad, you know. He’s just very, very strict.’ Now, Angela could be downplaying how ‘bad’ he is— they are right outside Mr. Ascot’s house, after all, and someone could hear them— or she could genuinely be defending Mr. Ascot.

Although Angela doesn’t object to Randall’s dreams of becoming an archaeologist, like Mr. Ascot, she does worry about Randall a lot— going as far as to run off with the mask— when he plans on going to the Akbadain ruins… 

You’d think Mr. Ascot would almost approve of Angela, in this case, as she tried to hinder Randall’s plans! And, in present day Miracle Mask, adult Angela and Randall’s mother seem to be on close terms— enough for Angela to admit to Mrs. Ascot that she took the mask from Henry’s study and she plans to write to Hershel Layton for help. 

Angela must relate to Mrs. Ascot a lot, as they’ve both lost people they love to the Akbadain ruins (one of them being Randall) and they both presumably had to deal with hopeless search parties for years. I can imagine Angela would be able to comfort Mrs. Ascot, as Angela’s already been through this one with her brother—

Her brother… who also went to the ruins… who I assume studied archaeology… who may have inspired Randall… Ah.

For a character without a name or even one appearance, Angela’s bother sure created a lot of problems for poor Angela, didn’t he? I’m guessing his disappearance was one of the reasons why Angela’s parents were so INSISTENT that Angela needed to marry when she young. Surely Angela will be safe if she finds a nice wealthy husband and she doesn’t even need to lift a finger in life! Their family’s troubles with be over!

AND this could be a potential reason why Mr. Ascot would disapprove of Angela— well, her family. Mr. Ascot wouldn’t want Randall to marry the sister of the boy who went missing in the Akbadain ruins. Mr. Ascot might think Angela is encouraging Randall to go on these dangerous adventures, when he couldn’t be more wrong.

So, Randall— at the ripe old age of seventeen— is adamant that he needs to marry Angela… before her parents pass her off to some rich husband who isn’t obsessed with archaeology… and, it’s another reason for Randall to rebel against his father. 

That’s not to say that Randall didn’t love Angela— but if their parents forbade Randall from marrying her, there’s not much either of them can do while they’re still seventeen. 

(I can’t be bothered looking up at what age you could get married without your parents’ approval back in Old Timey England, but I can imagine Randall wouldn’t want to fall out with Angela’s parents if he can avoid it!)

But if Randall returns with a fortune from Akbadain? If he becomes the most famous archaeologist in history, as Angela’s brother may have once aspired to do…? That could win over Angela’s parents! And he wouldn’t need to rely on his father’s wealth if he had his own fortune! 

Randall could marry Angela, they could move to London, and he could start studying archeology at university— problem solved… if only it had been that simple.

"y'all probably know the story of orpheus and eurydice. but they are SO tragedy. they are TEXTBOOK tragedy. they redefined the genre. on their literal wedding day as she's walking down the aisle eurydice gets bit by a snake and dies. orpheus loves her so much he goes down to the underworld to try and save her. hades allows him to take her back to the land of the living, as long as she walks behind him, and he cannot look back, otherwise her soul will be taken. he's mostly fine , but begins to doubt and at the very end of the tunnel, he looks back. they lock eyes for a moment before she disappears back into hell. orpheus is then so distraught that he wanders the earth singing mournful melodies and gets stoned to death by some nymphs who think his sad songs are bumming them out. DUUUUDE their story consumed my every waking thought as a child."
