Professional Engineers Day
Today, we recognize Professional Engineers (PE) Day. Throughout our organization, we have many dedicated, hard-working Professional Engineers and we thank them all for their contributions to help us reach our goals of creating a cleaner, greener New York State. Below, hear from a few of our PE’s on favorite projects and challenges, why they decided to become a PE, what a typical week is like and more.
NYPA’s James Padgett is a Project Engineer working in the Transmission Department, part of Utility Operations.
Why did you choose to become a PE?
A project engineer is that hybrid between a Technical Specification creating Discipline Engineer (Electrical, Protection and Control, Civil, etc.) and a wholly invested Project Manager. While day-to-day assignments will require to pull a bit more on the business-related side (scheduling, project planning, action item reviewing) it does not shut out the entirety of your creative/analytical side that is used when designing a solution.
What advice can you offer prospective engineering students?
Communication skills often are emphasized in the final stages of an engineering education but is something best practiced from earlier stages. Every engineer at some point will be required to boil down their work into simpler terms to better convey the main obstacle; often this is to the benefit of non-technical people but in doing so, the empirical data (what am I doing, what is the goal?) will then be etched into the benefactors minds as-well-as one’s own. Taking the opportunity to do public speaking or a paper will build a better vocabulary and help with the soft-skills often ignored as favor for the technical ones.
Can you tell us about one of your best accomplishments in engineering? What about this particular project are you most proud?
The very first project at NYPA I took part in from start-to-finish was the White Plains Office 8th Floor Rebuild, more commonly referred to as the iSOC Project. Having come from a Transmission/Distribution utility, architectural or floor space projects were a new endeavor. Nevertheless, a project is a project, so the challenge was to learn quickly and meet the high expectations. This particular one allowed me to interact with a plethora of NYPA’s great technical groups (Engineering, IT, the WPO facility management team) but also sides of the business that I likely would not have crossed within my more bread-and-butter Transmission utility projects (Corporate Communications, Cyber Security, RT&D, Corporate Strategy). In the time frame we set for ourselves we accomplished an outstanding amount of work that speaks for itself if one just walks the 8th floor today.
Cindy Bradford is a Senior Project Engineer at NYPA.
Why did you choose to become a PE?
A Professional Engineering license is a certification that demonstrates an engineer’s commitment and adherence to a higher level of standards. Today, Professional Engineer certifications are highly respected, and sometimes a necessity for career advancement. NYPA, being a state agency, requires that higher-level engineering positions be filled only by licensed professional engineers. This certification offers engineers a slew of valuable opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
What types of challenges in engineering do you enjoy?
Every career path presents challenges. There are two challenges that I enjoy the most. One is profound responsibility. All work engineers do for our power plants will directly or indirectly affect our customers. Professional engineers are ultimately responsible for the welfare, health, and safety of the public. Everything we do at work will make an impact, big and small. The other challenge I enjoy is the need for continuous learning. The world is changing. Technologies are evolving faster than ever. Engineers need to be prepared to change around what they do and learn new skills at any age.
As an engineer what is the best aspect of working for an organization like NYPA?
The aspect I like about working for an organization like NYPA is that we are really trying to stay at the front line of providing clean and sustainable energy to its customers, through innovations and variety of initiatives. It gives its engineers many exciting opportunities to be exposed and work on cutting edge technologies.
Dominick Luce is NYPA’s VP of Engineering and Construction Management.
Why did you choose to become a PE?
I chose to become an engineer because at a young age I realized how much I enjoyed building things, at first with Lego and Lincoln logs, then school projects and finally home projects. I always enjoyed watching my ideas come together either by building projects, solving problems or developing a better way to do something and then rolling up my sleeves to get it done. What types of challenges in engineering do you enjoy?
Working with teams to develop ideas, designing to those ideas and making sure they work effectively in field applications after they have been built. I enjoy the challenge of successfully trouble-shooting, redesigning and developing optimal solutions after numerous attempts.
Can you describe a typical week for you in engineering? What takes up the most of your time?
Under Clean Energy Solutions, the Engineering & Construction Management department is working on over 400 active projects throughout numerous customer facilities across New York State. These projects are all in various phases including audit, design or construction. Our team is working to implement energy efficiency, renewable and resiliency projects that help NYPA and New York State achieve its ambitious energy goals. A typical week includes addressing customer concerns and project issues, strategizing on delivery and deployment of resources and gathering intel on the latest technologies to ensure maximum savings while providing our customers with the tools to operate efficiently and make timely decisions.
Lynda Makhloufi is one of our Utility Operations Project Engineers.
Why did you choose to become a PE? I have always been very inquisitive, always asking questions- Why is the sky blue? How does this work? My brother, a telecommunication engineer, was also a big influence on me. I spent a lot of time with him fixing things around the house. My favorite TV show growing up was MacGyver! Not only was MacGyver a superb engineer with vast scientific knowledge, and a pacifist, but he also was a creative problem solver. All these interests and influences led me to this noble profession!
Can you tell us about one of your best accomplishments in engineering? What about this particular project are you most proud? I headed the historic and challenging Niagara Intake Conduits Inspection Project, which used a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to travel through and inspect the nearly 4.5 mile water tunnels under the City of Niagara Falls. These tunnels had not been inspected for 25 years, so there was a lot of risk involved. I managed this project in my first year at NYPA and I am proud to say it was a huge success!
What advice can you offer prospective engineering students? Do not be afraid to make mistakes - we all do! Use mistakes as a learning opportunity. Be curious about everything. Have a plan but be flexible. Say YES to challenging projects because those are the ones that will shape you and give you professional confidence in the future!
